- Chapter 5 - Why Didn't You Say So Sooner?
Wei Wuxian walked with one hand behind his back and the other twirling Chenqing. Turning back with every step, he remarked, “Technically, this Yiling is my territory; after all, I am the Yiling Patriarch. But how is it that I never knew such a mountain existed here?”
Lan Wangji followed a few paces behind him at a steady, leisurely rate, likewise keeping one hand behind his back while the other firmly gripped Bichen.
Xie Lian smiled and said, “I wouldn’t know either. San Lang, do you?”
Hua Cheng replied nonchalantly, “This was originally a nameless mountain belonging to the Mortal Realm. The Three Realms are usually clearly divided, but it seems the barrier of this cultivation world has broken, connecting it to this mountain in the Mortal Realm.”
Xie Lian frowned slightly. “In that case, won’t it disrupt the balance between the cultivation world and the Mortal Realm?”
Hua Cheng nodded. “Indeed. For instance, Gege receiving a prayer from this cultivation world is a result of that.”
Wei Wuxian asked, “Oh? Then may I ask the Ghost King, do you know how this barrier was broken? And by whom?”
Hua Cheng did not pay him any mind.
Xie Lian gave a light cough. “Ahem… this barrier was not broken by human hands; it formed naturally. However, everything has its predestination. Whether the breaking of this barrier is a blessing or a curse remains to be seen. Young Master Wei needn’t worry too much.”
Wei Wuxian smiled and said, “I consider it a good thing, as it allowed me to meet you two—a Heavenly Official and a Ghost King. I never imagined such beings existed.”
He then turned to look at Lan Wangji. “Lan Zhan, what do you think? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?”
Lan Wangji looked at Wei Wuxian and replied, “A good thing.”
Wei Wuxian’s smile widened even further. “Hahahaha! I knew it, Lan Zhan. You truly know my heart.”
Lan Wangji said, “I know.”
The four of them walked down the mountain chatting and laughing. In truth, it was mostly Wei Wuxian asking questions and Xie Lian answering them, while Lan Wangji and Hua Cheng followed beside them in silence.
Through their conversation along the way, Xie Lian learned that Lan Wangji was the second-born in his family and had an older brother, which was why people called him “Lan Er-Gongzi” (Second Young Master Lan).
Similarly, Wei Wuxian learned that Hua Cheng was not only the Ghost King but also the master of Ghost City, known to many as “Hua Chengzhu” (City Lord Hua).
Since the malevolent entity causing trouble in Yiling had already been subdued by the duo of Xie and Hua, the most important thing for Wei Wuxian now was, naturally, to eat, drink, and have fun.
As they walked through the streets of Yiling, they were met with bustling crowds and vendors hawking their wares on both sides. Everything was still so familiar and lively.
Suddenly, upon reaching a certain spot, Wei Wuxian leaned closer to Lan Wangji and asked with a grin, “Lan Zhan, do you still remember this place?”
Lan Wangji glanced at the spot Wei Wuxian indicated and said, “I remember.”
Wei Wuxian took two steps forward with his hands behind his back. “Right here, A-Yuan cried and called you ‘A-Die,’ making it impossible for you to leave.”
Lan Wangji’s eyes followed Wei Wuxian closely, listening quietly to him speak.
Wei Wuxian continued, “Lan Zhan, do you know? Back then, I was actually exceptionally happy. It was so rare to run into an acquaintance, and it just happened to be you of all people.”
“Even though you weren’t specifically there to find me, I was still so happy. A-Yuan really knows how to pick people—he found you instantly! Hahahaha.”
Lan Wangji said, “Yes.”
Wei Wuxian looked puzzled. “Yes, what?”
Lan Wangji looked at Wei Wuxian and said seriously, word by word, “I was there to find you.”
Wei Wuxian said in disbelief, “Lan Zhan, are you saying that when you came to Yiling back then, it was specifically to look for me?”
Lan Wangji replied, “Mn.”
Wei Wuxian walked happily to Lan Wangji’s side and asked, “Then why didn’t you say so sooner?”
Lan Wangji said, “I was afraid.”
Wei Wuxian laughed and used Chenqing to lightly tap Lan Wangji’s shoulder. “Afraid of what? Could it be that Lan Er-Gege already had ‘ill intentions’ toward me back then?”
Lan Wangji gently patted Chenqing away and said, “Nothing of the sort.”
Having said that, he continued walking forward without looking back.
Wei Wuxian tucked Chenqing away and immediately caught up, draping an arm over Lan Wangji’s shoulder. He teased triumphantly, “Lan Zhan, just tell the truth, it’s not embarrassing! Quickly tell me, were you already plotting something against me back then? Or was it even earlier?”
Lan Wangji did not answer. He simply kept walking forward with his hands behind his back, his face a calm mask, yet his earlobes were quietly turning a shade of red.
Wei Wuxian naturally noticed the change in Lan Wangji’s ears. He stopped in his tracks, clutched his stomach, and laughed heartily. “Hahahaha! Lan Zhan, oh Lan Zhan, you’re embarrassed by this? How are you so shameless at night then! You even insist it must be ‘every day’—not even one day less would do!”
Lan Wangji’s footsteps faltered. “Wei Ying.”
Wei Wuxian stepped forward and hooked his arm around Lan Wangji’s shoulder again. “Hahahaha, alright, alright, my Lan Er-Gege. I won’t say it anymore. After all, our Lan Er-Gege is a peerless gentleman by day, but wears a completely different face by night.”
Lan Wangji: “…”
