- Chapter 28 - The Lively Little Kitchen
Shi Qingxuan, who hadn’t had a decent meal all day, immediately sent He Xuan to the little kitchen to cook for him as soon as they returned to the Jingshi courtyard. He had discovered the kitchen the day they arrived, and it was finally being put to good use.
With He Xuan handling the food, there was a surplus of delicacies—but how could they go without fine wine?
As Wei Wuxian stepped into the Jingshi courtyard, he saw Shi Qingxuan waving at him.
Shi Qingxuan called out, “Master Wei, come quickly!”
Wei Wuxian walked over and asked, “Lord Wind Master, what’s the matter?”
Shi Qingxuan rubbed his stomach. “The food here is truly terrible; I haven’t had a single full meal all day.”
Smelling the aroma wafting from the kitchen, Wei Wuxian understood immediately. “So, the Wind Master intends to have a private feast and a little drink?”
Shi Qingxuan draped an arm over Wei Wuxian’s shoulder. “I knew Master Wei would understand me! Hahahaha! Black Water is making delicious food, and now all we’re missing is the wine!”
Wei Wuxian rubbed his chin. “I wonder if I might be lucky enough to taste the craftsmanship of the Ghost King?”
Shi Qingxuan replied, “Of course! Black Water’s cooking is wonderful. I already told him to make extra so we could eat together—there’s definitely enough!”
Wei Wuxian grinned. “Wait here; I’ll go get the wine!”
Since Lan Zhan was likely to be busy until who-knows-when tonight, having someone to drink with alongside good food was an opportunity Wei Wuxian wasn’t about to pass up.
He brought out all the Emperor’s Smile that Lan Wangji had hidden in the Jingshi to the kitchen. He and Shi Qingxuan drank happily, chatting and laughing, while He Xuan sat silently by Shi Qingxuan’s side, peeling and serving food for him.
After a jar of wine, Wei Wuxian suddenly realized someone was missing. “Lord Wind Master, where are Daozhang Xie and the others? Aren’t they eating?”
Shi Qingxuan replied, “His Royal Highness doesn’t drink, and Crimson Rain Sought Flower drinks even less…”
“Though we don’t drink, we must still eat the delicacies.”
Xie Lian walked into the kitchen with a smile, side-by-side with Hua Cheng.
Shi Qingxuan was surprised. “Your Highness, why are you here? I thought you’d already retired for the night.”
Wei Wuxian was even more shocked. “Retired? This early? It’s not even the Hour of the Pig (9:00 PM) yet—is your bedtime earlier than the one here in Cloud Recesses?”
Shi Qingxuan laughed. “You wouldn’t know, Master Wei. Let me tell you, back at the Paradise Manor, they often retire before even having dinner.”
Wei Wuxian looked at the two with wide-eyed surprise.
Xie Lian gave a light cough. “Ahem… the aroma of this food reached our room. I didn’t realize Black Water’s culinary skills were so great; I’ve never tasted his cooking before, so I wanted to try some.”
Shi Qingxuan patted the seat beside him. “Come, Your Highness, let’s eat together. Black Water’s skills are on par with the chefs at Paradise Manor—actually, no, he’s even better.”
“The South Sea has no chefs; Black Water does all the cooking, and it’s incredibly delicious.”
Hua Cheng picked up a piece of meat with his chopsticks and tasted it. “It’s alright. Compared to Gege’s cooking, it’s a far cry.”
Shi Qingxuan instantly understood how Quan Yizhen felt: As expected of a Ghost King!
He Xuan said flatly, “That is indeed true; I cannot hope to match it.”
Wei Wuxian was left in a daze. “Daozhang Xie knows how to cook? And it’s better than this?”
Xie Lian simply ate in silence, not answering.
Shi Qingxuan beckoned Wei Wuxian closer. When Wei Wuxian leaned in, Shi Qingxuan whispered, “The food His Royal Highness makes… only Crimson Rain Sought Flower can eat it. You understand what I mean, right?”
Looking at Wei Wuxian’s face, Shi Qingxuan knew he hadn’t caught the drift, so he spelled it out: “I’m saying if you eat the Crown Prince’s cooking, your soul might leave your body on the spot. Do you understand now?”
Wei Wuxian froze for a moment, then burst into hearty laughter. “It seems Daozhang Xie is even more skilled than I am! I ought to let those juniors taste his cooking; then let’s see if they ever dare to complain about mine again!”
Just then, footsteps sounded outside. Wei Wuxian picked up a jar of Emperor’s Smile and stood up. “Daozhang Xie, Lord Wind Master, I’m heading out first. Take your time eating and chatting. As for the rest of this wine, I’m gifting it all to the Wind Master!”
Wei Wuxian carried the wine back to the main room. As expected, Lan Wangji had returned.
Lan Wangji placed Bichen on the table and glanced at the “hole” next to the prayer mat—the hiding spot for the wine. Currently, it was empty; not only that, but the floorboard hadn’t even been replaced properly, and the mat was tossed carelessly aside.
Wei Wuxian noticed Lan Wangji’s gaze and, feeling a bit guilty, immediately turned around to block the “hole.” He looked up with a cheeky grin. “I was in a hurry just now and forgot to close it. Don’t be angry; I’ll fix it right away.”
Lan Wangji simply gave the hole a neutral look. He didn’t say anything as he moved past Wei Wuxian, replaced the board, and set the mat back in order.
Wei Wuxian remarked, “Lan Zhan, your forehead ribbon is crooked.”
This time, Lan Wangji did not immediately reach up to check it. Instead, he turned to face Wei Wuxian and asked, “Is it?”
Wei Wuxian smiled and set the wine on the table. He wrapped one arm around Lan Wangji’s waist and gently stroked the ribbon with his other hand. “Let me look closely… oh, it seems it wasn’t your ribbon that was crooked, but my heart. Lan Zhan, how can you be so handsome? I could look at you forever and never get enough!”
Lan Wangji wrapped both arms around Wei Wuxian’s waist, bringing his face even closer.
Wei Wuxian cupped Lan Wangji’s face in his hands. “Up close, Er-gege is even more beautiful!”
Lan Wangji leaned in further, and Wei Wuxian pressed his lips against his. Their teeth and tongues met in a lingering chase. It wasn’t until Wei Wuxian felt he was about to run out of breath that they finally pulled apart.
Wei Wuxian sat on the edge of the bed, swinging his feet while taking a swig of wine. He watched as Lan Wangji poured hot water into the wooden tub. With a beauty by his side and wine in his hand, this life truly was pleasant—he was only missing a “little one.”
Before he knew it, another jar of wine had been emptied. His thoughts had drifted far away.
Lan Wangji said, “It is ready.”
Wei Wuxian snapped back to reality. “What’s ready?”
Lan Wangji shook his head helplessly. He walked over, knelt down, and picked up the empty wine jar to set it on the table.
Whether it was the alcohol speaking or his own heart’s desire, Wei Wuxian stood up and hugged Lan Wangji tightly from behind. Resting his head on Lan Wangji’s back, he said, “Lan Zhan, tell me… why was I so stupid in my past life? Why didn’t I realize your feelings for me? Why didn’t I even realize my own?”
Lan Wangji reached up to hold Wei Wuxian’s hands. “I went to see my uncle just now.”
Wei Wuxian asked, “My performance today was alright, wasn’t it? Your uncle didn’t make things difficult for you, did he?”
Lan Wangji replied, “Mn… I have already explained to him…”
Wei Wuxian lifted his head. “Explained what?”
Lan Wangji turned around, his eyes full of deep affection and his voice firm as he said, “Wei Ying, I want to give us both an official status.”
