Good Night, Brother! - Chapter 3.10
“Brother.”
“Mmm…”
“Get up, we’re going to work.”
Something soft and warm brushed against Eunhyun’s eyelids and then drifted away. Then it touched her cheek, and finally her lips.
Eunhyun frowned, annoyed at the interruption to her sleep. She heard a low chuckle, as if someone found her reaction endearing.
“Wake up, huh?”
Gentle hands on her shoulders and arms roused her from her slumber, while a sweet voice and warm breath tickled her ear. Slowly, Eunhyun’s eyes opened to see Hyunhyun’s smiling face lying beside her, propped up on his side.
Something felt off, even to her groggy mind. Why was he in her bed? Hadn’t she locked the door to her room last night? Her half-asleep brain snapped awake, and Eunhyun narrowed her eyes, glaring at him.
“You… what are you doing? How did you get into my room?”
“I used the key to get in.”
“I never gave you a key to my door.”
“Of course not. I made a copy. What if you locked yourself out? Or what if you got sick? What would I do…?”
Eunhyun stared at him in disbelief, her mouth falling open. A long sigh escaped her lips.
“Hurry up and get up, hyung. I’m going to be late for work.”
“Haah… I’m off sick.”
“Why? Are you sick?”
Hyunhyun shamelessly asked, his face full of genuine concern. Dumbfounded by his audacity, Eunhyun snapped back in a cold tone.
“You don’t need to know.”
“Why? Can’t you tell me?”
“Oh, never mind. Just get lost.”
“Why did you take the month off? Tell me. Huh?”
Frustrated by his persistence and realizing he wouldn’t stop until he got an answer, Eunhyun let out a defeated sigh.
“…To go to the hospital.”
“Why? Are you sick?”
“Oh, I’m going to Omega Hospital!”
I shouted at the top of my lungs, frustrated with Eunhyun’s relentless questioning. Who is this even for?
Eunhyun thought back to last night, hastily using electronic payment to file for her monthly leave. Could this all just be a joke? Isn’t there something called the placebo effect?
If that’s the case, then everything she did with Hyunhyun was a mistake. Even if it’s a bit much, maybe she should find him a house somewhere else. If they lived separately, they could go back to how things were before… just like before…
Ahhh… I don’t know. My head is a mess.
Eunhyun pushed him away and stood up to get a glass of water, but to her surprise, he got up and followed her into the kitchen.
Eunhyun didn’t normally care for water, but ever since Hyunhyun admitted to drugging her barley tea, she had only been drinking water straight from the tap. As she placed her cup under the outlet and pressed the button, Hyunhyun approached her, gently squeezing her shoulder.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s go to the hospital together. You’re scared of hospitals.”
Eunhyun flushed and retorted, “When have I ever been scared of hospitals?”
“Hmm… Okay, fine. You’re not scared, but you don’t like them,” Hyunhyun replied with a sly smile.
“…….”
“If I go for an Omega test, they’re going to draw blood.” A gentle smile crossed Hyunhyun’s face as he watched his brother gulp down water with a look of mild disgust.
Eunhyun arrived at the Omega Hospital—a place she never thought she’d visit in her life—with Hyunhyun by her side.
The doctor, a kind-looking man with a round face and round glasses, greeted them warmly. When Eunhyun explained that she wanted to take a genetic test, he asked her a few questions about her symptoms before moving forward.
Eunhyun couldn’t help but remember when her school had conducted group tests when she was ten years old. Back then, it had taken about a week to get the results back.
“How long do I have to wait for the test results?” she asked.
“Nowadays, we use a simple test kit. It only takes about three minutes for the results. The world has certainly become more convenient, hasn’t it?”
In just a few minutes, Eunhyun would know if she was a beta or an omega. She couldn’t hide her anxiety.
At the doctor’s request, a nurse wheeled over a cart carrying test kits and trays, then gently rolled up the sleeve of Eunhyun’s sweater. Soon, a sharp needle would pierce her arm. Ugh… Eunhyun silently screamed in her mind. Grimacing, she turned her head away, only to feel Hyunhyun, who was sitting next to her, wordlessly squeeze her other hand. Strangely enough, Eunhyun felt a small sense of relief.
The stinging pain passed quickly. The doctor drew blood and carefully dropped it into a reagent-coated test tube. Now, all that was left to do was wait.
Three minutes later, the letters “Ω-R” appeared faintly in the small, square results window of the tester. The doctor adjusted his glasses, recorded the results on the chart, and calmly declared, “You’re a recessive omega.”
The doctor seemed intrigued, commenting that it wasn’t common for adults to discover their classification so late. She suggested Eunhyun get an ultrasound of her uterus while she was there. Eunhyun, still struggling to believe that she even had a uterus, followed silently to the ultrasound room.
Cold gel was applied to her flat stomach, and soon, the black-and-white outline of her uterus appeared on the monitor. The doctor diagnosed that it was positioned normally and would likely be fully functional within a few months.
The kind doctor explained that Eunhyun would need to report the change to the ward office and obtain an Omega certificate at the reception desk. Since Eunhyun was employed at a company, the doctor advised her to notify her workplace as well.
The doctor confirmed that I am now imprinted with Eunhyun. He smiled benevolently as he explained that the pheromones of recessive omegas are often unstable, but in Eunhyun’s case, her pheromones were remarkably stable due to the imprinting. At this, Hyun-hyun smiled widely and looked at Eunhyun, who was the only one in the room trembling.
Eunhyun rubbed the goosebumps on her arms, feeling like an isolated island in the middle of nowhere.
Omega.
It was a word Eunhyun was more familiar with as the name of a nutritional supplement than as a biological trait.
The doctor’s diagnosis, supported by a combination of test kits and ultrasound results, all pointed to one thing: for 25 years, Eunhyun had been a beta.
After 25 years as a beta, Eunhyun Jung had been reborn as an omega.
