- Chapter 25 - The Business (End of the VIP Preview)
After a while, the other guests arrived one after another, and basically every single one of them had a similar reaction upon entering.
They would push the door open, start to greet everyone with a smile, and then upon seeing that one of the people in the room was Shen Yan wear an expression as if they had seen a ghost. It took them several seconds to snap out of it, regain their composure, and join the small group for small talk.
Hahahahahaha I’m dying! The production team definitely did this on purpose! I feel relieved seeing everyone has the same reaction as I did. This identical reaction, hahahaha. Shen Yan: Is it really that unbelievable that I’m joining a variety show? (doge)
Once all eight guests had finally gathered, they sat around and engaged in some awkward small talk for a while until a staff member arrived to deliver the task. Only then did they rise to leave.
Boarding the production team’s vehicle, the eight guests headed into the heart of Xixun Town to complete their mission.
Xixun Town truly lived up to its reputation as a famous ancient town in China, exuding an old-world charm from every corner. From a distance, one could see pavilions, terraces, green bricks, and dark tiles. By the emerald lake, a beautiful woman sang a light, gentle melody, making people lose themselves in this world that resembled an ink wash painting. Walking down the streets, people naturally slowed their pace, and even their voices softened.
Up close, however, it seemed like just an ordinary town. The bustling noise of the crowds pulled the tourists back from the ethereal fairyland and into the world of common mortals.
The town wasn’t far from where they had met, and they reached their destination quickly. The director handed them today’s task cards.
One person stepped forward to take the card and read aloud: “The eight guests will be divided into four groups. Two per group will sell local handicrafts to tourists on the main street of Xixun. Each group has a starting capital of 100 yuan. Within the allotted time, groups will be ranked by income. Different rankings will receive different treatment in the upcoming travel segments.”
This person was named Cheng Zinan, a currently popular “liuliang” (high-traffic) young idol. He had come to the variety show with his girlfriend, Tang Chu, and they were the only actual couple in the cast. Tang Chu was a rising star in the music industry who had shot to fame with her song “Deep Affection.” She had a beautiful voice but usually stayed quiet by her boyfriend’s side.
After reading the card, Cheng Zinan asked, “Is the grouping decided by drawing lots or do we decide ourselves?”
The director replied, “Free combination.”
“Alright,” Cheng Zinan agreed. “Then I’ll be in a group with my Tang-Tang. No objections, right everyone?”
The rest of the group looked like they had just been stuffed with a mouthful of “dog food” (witnessing public displays of affection), nodding their heads and saying they had no objections—let the couple enjoy their solo beauty.
With the couple group settled, the remaining six looked at each other to find their partners.
Gu Ming suddenly bounced over to Yu Nianzhi’s side and said, “Little Yu, shall we team up?”
Yu Nianzhi hesitated, thinking of how to decline, when Shen Yan poked her head over and smiled. “Sorry, Niannian has already promised to team up with me.”
“Huh?” Gu Ming didn’t process it immediately, asking foolishly, “When?”
Shen Yan blinked, a hint of mischief in her eyes. “Just now.”
Shen Yan: We have a telepathic connection, spiritual synchronization, and mental communication; we settled it via brainwaves long ago.
Yu Nianzhi froze for a second before catching on, responding actively: “Right, right, just now. Teacher Shen and I already agreed to be on a team.”
Gu Ming thought to herself: When exactly did you two discuss this? You clearly haven’t spoken a word out loud.
It took her a few seconds for her “reflex arc” to finish its journey, realizing that these two simply wanted to be in a group together. She chuckled. “Okay, okay. You two carry on, carry on.”
A guy waved at Gu Ming. “Xiao Ming, let’s be a group?”
Gu Ming knew him, but she waved him off haughtily. “No way, I want to be with a big sister.”
The guy: “…”
Gu Ming ran over to Xie You’s side, smiling so widely that a dimple appeared beside her mouth. “Big sister, can we be a team?”
Xie You was taken aback but smiled and replied, “Alright.”
Gu Ming turned back and made a face at the guy, then intimately hooked her arm through Xie You’s.
Now, six of the eight people had partners. The guy looked at the last person remaining. “Teacher Xu, I guess we’re together then.”
The last person was named Xu Wenluo, a veteran Movie King. He had been standing aside with a smile, watching them find partners, and only now spoke up. “Fine. I look forward to working with you.”
The guy laughed loudly and clapped Xu Wenluo hard on the shoulder. “Not at all, not at all! You’re too polite, Teacher!”
Xu Wenluo: “…”
Your friend [Blunt Little Chen] has come online.
This very “familiar-with-everyone” guy was named Chen Yanqing. He had built his popularity through variety shows and was an expert at being the class clown.
Looking at the laughing, carefree Chen Yanqing, Yu Nianzhi inexplicably thought that, in a way, he was very similar to Gu Ming. The only difference was likely that Gu Ming had a partner, whereas Chen Yanqing was a “single dog.”
Actually, it was a coincidence that Yu Nianzhi knew Gu Ming had a boyfriend. After all, the two weren’t close enough for Gu Ming to be silly enough to tell her directly.
Back when they were in the same film crew, Shen Yan had happened to overhear Gu Ming arguing with her boyfriend. At the time, Yu Nianzhi was going to the restroom. Since filming for the day had ended, the set was very quiet. Before she even pushed the door open, she heard a “buzzing” sound of someone talking. She didn’t think much of it, assuming some acquaintances had run into each other and were chatting.
However, as soon as she entered, she saw Gu Ming roaring into her phone: “Yu Siyi, if you don’t want to live with me anymore, then let’s just break up! Who cares! I—”
A curse was stuck in her throat. Looking up, she saw Yu Nianzhi.
Gu Ming: “…” Yu Nianzhi: “…”
The two stared at each other in silence.
Seconds later, a fierce light appeared in Gu Ming’s eyes. She hung up the phone and walked toward Yu Nianzhi aggressively. Yu Nianzhi almost suspected the other woman was going to “silence” the witness.
Just as she was wondering how to save her life, she saw Gu Ming’s gaze instantly soften. Her tone became sweet and very well-behaved. “Sister Yuyu, you didn’t see anything just now, right?”
Yu Nianzhi got goosebumps from being called “Sister Yuyu.”
However, she had no hobby of gossiping or spreading rumors. She repeatedly stated she hadn’t heard a thing and that there wasn’t a soul here.
Perhaps through their time together, Gu Ming could see that Yu Nianzhi wasn’t the type to gossip. After observing for a while and confirming nothing had happened, she put her mind at ease. This girl was quite thick-skinned; she soon put the incident behind her and even developed a good relationship with Yu Nianzhi because she was “loyal.”
Recalling it now, Yu Nianzhi still thought it was quite a magical turn of events.
Each group received the handicrafts they were to sell, with everyone carrying a large bag in each hand. They headed toward the crowded main street.
Shen Yan and Yu Nianzhi walked at the very back. Watching the other groups disappear into the crowd, Yu Nianzhi suddenly stopped.
Shen Yan turned her head and asked, “What is it?”
Then she saw Yu Nianzhi say with a serious face, “We can’t just blindly follow them. We need to have a plan first.”
Hahahahaha waiting for everyone else to leave first. Little Yu, you’re cunning. Yuyu looks like a veteran at this.
Shen Yan nodded, feeling that Yu Nianzhi made a lot of sense. Being completely clueless about such things, Shen Yan continued to look at her. “So, what should we do?”
“Let’s go rent a small pushcart. It’ll save effort; otherwise, we won’t be able to carry all this stuff for long before getting tired. If we find a spot, we can spread everything out to sell,” Yu Nianzhi suggested.
So, the two found a shop, spoke with the owner, and spent their 100 yuan to rent a small pushcart, even borrowing a small stool in the process.
Yu Nianzhi smiled. “If we get tired, we can sit and rest for a bit.”
Current assets of the YanZhi Group: 0
They chose a spot that seemed to have high foot traffic and parked the cart, laying the items out side-by-side.
Yu Nianzhi thought for a moment and added, “We definitely can’t sell all this stuff. Let’s sell it a bit cheaper. Small profits, quick turnover it’s not like we’re paying for the cost of the goods anyway.”
“Okay.” Shen Yan continued to listen to Yu Nianzhi’s arrangements earnestly.
After all, both were celebrities. Standing on the street made them very conspicuous, and a crowd soon gathered around them.
An older lady picked up a bracelet and asked, “How much is this?”
Remembering Yu Nianzhi’s “small profits, quick turnover” advice, Shen Yan smiled and said, “Three yuan.”
The lady, who had been planning to haggle, was stunned. She immediately pulled out her wallet. “I’ll buy it.”
Beside her, Yu Nianzhi’s eyes went wide. She quickly spoke up: “Sorry, Auntie, she made a mistake. This bracelet isn’t three yuan; it’s thirty yuan.”
The lady frowned. “That’s so expensive. Can you make it cheaper?”
Yu Nianzhi maintained her smile. “The lowest is twenty-seven. If you like it, I’ll wrap it up for you.”
The lady haggled a bit more, eventually taking the bracelet for twenty-five yuan. They successfully earned their first bit of money.
Yuyu is so skilled! She’s clearly a businessperson! (thumbs up) Hahahaha Shen Yan-yan’s ‘three yuan’ is going to be the death of me. True “Small profits, quick turnover”
Once that transaction was settled, Yu Nianzhi quickly pulled Shen Yan aside and said helplessly, “Small profits and quick turnover isn’t that small.”
Shen Yan had likely never encountered such a situation. She listened quietly without saying a word, like a primary school student being scolded.
Yu Nianzhi added, “Think about it selling ten items like that only equals the price of one. We won’t make much even if we sell everything.”
Shen Yan nodded. “I understand. Let’s set the prices first.”
Hahahahahaha Shen Yan’s little expression is priceless. Shen Yan: Don’t be mean, I know I was wrong. Hahahahahaha did Shen Yan just blush! Famous painting: Shen Yan-yan being scolded. Is this the legendary scene of a frugal husband being heartbroken by a wife who spends money recklessly?
Seeing Shen Yan’s reaction, Yu Nianzhi was actually startled.
W-w-w-was I too loud just now? Did I scare Teacher Shen?
Yu Nianzhi panicked slightly. She asked cautiously, “Shen… Teacher Shen, are you alright?”
