- Chapter 27 - The Fall, A Butterfly Flutters into My Arms
What was that cracking sound? Yu Qianyan was stunned, her mind momentarily blank. Her first thought was, oh no, did my Daoist heart just shatter from the stress of getting married?
However, the wedding ceremony had already begun, so she couldn’t exactly run away now. That would be completely heartless.
The next second, she heard another similar sound, even clearer and louder than the last. It seemed to come from the direction of the viewing platform. She immediately checked on Rong Shu. Her face was hidden behind a mask, but her eyes didn’t betray any panic. It seemed Rong Shu was safe for now.
So, what was that faint cracking noise? She couldn’t have been hearing things, right?
Yu Qianyan didn’t dare lower her guard. She scanned the platform, the ceiling, and the floor with vigilant eyes, trying to locate the source of the sound.
According to the schedule, she should have quietly pressed the button on the remote hidden at her fingertip. This would trigger the lowering device at the center of the platform for Rong Shu, while a shower of petals rained down from the ceiling. Once Rong Shu descended, she would step onto a path of flower petals, perfectly laid out for her to walk toward Yu Qianyan.
Yet, with the remote in her hand, she couldn’t bring herself to press it. The officiant behind her was signaling so frantically that their eyes were practically cramping, but she ignored them entirely.
A crisis alarm was still blaring in her subconscious. The dreamy, gentle atmosphere seemed to hide an indescribable shadow waiting to strike.
The more tense and critical the moment became, the clearer Yu Qianyan’s mind grew.
Although it was only a second-floor platform, the drop was at least seven or eight meters. An ordinary Alpha might survive a fall from such a height without serious injury, but Omegas were generally delicate. If something went wrong, death was a real possibility.
Even though Rong Shu’s S-rank physique after her second differentiation was far superior to other Omegas, Yu Qianyan wouldn’t dare risk having her jump. Furthermore, to preserve the look of the wedding dress, Rong Shu wasn’t wearing any protective gear underneath. She also didn’t know how to land safely or disperse the impact of a fall. Even if she didn’t break an arm or a leg, a simple scrape or a sprained ankle would still hurt.
Moreover, the venue was packed with guests, including the Emperor and Empress. If Yu Qianyan’s hunch was correct and the platform collapsed, even if Rong Shu remained unhurt, an undignified landing or public embarrassment would likely devastate her pride for a long time.
Not to mention, such a simple oversight at such a solemn occasion would give everyone plenty of reasons to mock Yu Qishan in private.
She could not gamble with Rong Shu’s safety and the Yu family’s reputation at a time like this.
The masked bride had made a stunning entrance, but as she stood on the platform for an extended time, whispers began to ripple through the crowd.
The sound that previously required intense concentration to hear was becoming harder to distinguish amidst the music and growing chatter, making it seem as if it had been a figment of her imagination all along.
After noticing that Yu Qishan was also casting a puzzled look her way, Yu Qianyan finally made her move.
She didn’t press the button on the remote. Instead, she strode forward and sprinted toward the platform.
This act, which completely defied convention, instantly plunged the room into silence, followed by an even louder wave of murmurs.
As mentioned before, weddings followed fixed customs and templates. Especially in AO weddings, the Omega walking toward the Alpha was a long-standing tradition. It symbolized that the Omega’s body and mind would now belong to the Alpha, merging into their life. There was no such thing as an Alpha walking toward an Omega.
Even when the Omega’s status was higher than the Alpha’s, the most they would do was skip the “approach” part of the ceremony and have both newlyweds stand together from the start, which was already quite unconventional.
It wasn’t that Yu Qianyan didn’t know the rules, but weighing her options, this was the only choice she had.
Now, she found herself grateful for the ridiculous reputation her predecessor had cultivated. As a “high-level good-for-nothing Alpha,” having the label of “henpecked” added to her wouldn’t seem out of place.
Faster. Just a little faster.
A voice in her heart was urging her on frantically. She ran faster and faster, ignoring the reactions of the guests along the way. Her eyes were fixed only on Rong Shu, who stood alone on the platform, her figure blurring with the rhythmic jostling of her stride.
Just as she neared the base of the platform, the cracking sound erupted again. This time it was much sharper and louder than the previous ones, loud enough that even the guests sitting near the stage could hear it.
Yu Qianyan’s expression shifted instantly. She stomped firmly on the ground, using the momentum to leap into the air.
At the same moment, the fasteners on three sides of the platform’s center board snapped. Only one side remained, barely hanging on, but it couldn’t hold the weight. The entire board suddenly gave way like a trapdoor, and the bride on it plummeted from the high platform!
In a flash, the mid-air Yu Qianyan caught her bride securely, as if catching a white butterfly fluttering down.
The hem of the wedding dress brushed against Yu Qianyan’s arm, and the veil grazed her cheek. After wrapping her arms around Rong Shu’s waist, she pulled her tightly into her embrace as they fell. She even had the presence of mind to lift Rong Shu’s long skirt so that she wouldn’t trip and fall upon landing.
The moment they hit the ground, Yu Qianyan pressed the button in her hand. A flurry of colorful flower petals rained down instantly, covering them both from head to toe.
It all happened so suddenly and quickly that it caught everyone completely off guard. Not a single person remembered to record it.
Yet, even without a recording, no one would ever forget this fairy-tale-like, romantic moment.
The murmuring had ceased, leaving only the band, dutifully playing the predetermined, lingering melody for the newlyweds.
Yu Qianyan picked a petal off Rong Shu’s veil and looked into her eyes, silently asking if she was hurt. The latter gripped Yu Qianyan’s wrist tightly, her heartbeat so intense that even Yu Qianyan could hear it clearly.
“It’s alright, you’re safe now,” Yu Qianyan whispered to Rong Shu, her gaze sweeping dangerously over the fragments of the platform hidden beneath the petals. “Let’s go.”
“Hold my hand. Don’t be afraid, and don’t look back.”
