- Chapter 25 - Half-Truth, Once This Is Settled
The person delivering the report was a female Omega nurse who looked quite young. She wore her hair in a fresh high ponytail with a few loose, curly strands framing her face, and she possessed a pretty, sweet-looking complexion.
She had large, round cat-like eyes, but they curved into crescent moons the moment Yu Qianyan opened the door to look at her.
“Who are you?” Yu Qianyan felt she looked familiar, but she couldn’t quite place her.
The nurse smiled as she handed over the report and introduced herself, “You must be Miss Yu, right? My name is Xu Jiayin, and I’m a new nurse here. Even though you haven’t met me before, I’ve heard of your illustrious name for a long time. You really are as beautiful and powerful as the rumors say, with unmatched charm.”
Yu Qianyan felt something was off immediately. Ever since she came to this world, she had rarely left the Yu household and had kept a low profile, so how could she have any fame? As for the original host, beauty and charm aside, what kind of rumor was “powerful”? That person was a notorious freak who had the rank but no actual strength, someone who single-handedly proved that an Alpha above S-rank could still be a piece of trash.
But since the girl was all smiles and offered such intense flattery, Yu Qianyan couldn’t say anything rude. She simply thanked her and tried to close the door after taking the report.
Unexpectedly, Xu Jiayin grabbed the opportunity to shake her wrist, asking with a tone approaching worship, “Miss Yu, would it be convenient for us to exchange contact information?”
Such a simple request seemed to have no reason for refusal.
Yu Qianyan opened her mouth, but changed her mind the moment she began to speak, “I need to ask my fiancée if she agrees… why don’t you just add her instead?”
Xu Jiayin lowered her wrist and stood on tiptoe, attempting to look past Yu Qianyan’s shoulder into the room. Unfortunately, she saw nothing. She then lowered her head with a smile, saying regretfully, “If it’s inconvenient for you, then never mind.”
From Yu Qianyan’s height and angle, the way Xu Jiayin lowered her head looked perfect. It revealed the full, rounded shape of her head, her thick hair, and her fair, slender neck. Even without seeing her face, her whole demeanor exuded a coy and charming air.
This Omega, who called herself Xu Jiayin, had a tone of voice that reminded Yu Qianyan of her little junior sister, and the way she lowered her head was similar too. However, Yu Qianyan was not the lecherous fool the original host had been. Knowing full well this girl had ulterior motives, she wouldn’t fall for it, so she simply closed the door.
There was silence outside the door for a few seconds before the sound of footsteps followed. They weren’t particularly light, but they were rhythmic, and then they gradually faded away.
Yu Qianyan walked back carrying the two reports. Meeting Rong Shu’s inquisitive gaze, she paused and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Rong Shu twitched the corner of her mouth without answering. Her eyes seemed brighter than before, and she reached out to ask for the report.
Yu Qianyan didn’t stand on ceremony with her. She sat down beside Rong Shu, spread the reports out on their laps with one for each, and mumbled, “Let’s read them together, let’s read them together.”
Rong Shu glanced at her, surprisingly didn’t say a word, and obediently lowered her head to look at them with her.
The two sat closely, their booklets touching, making them look quite intimate.
Yu Qianyan read quickly. Before long, she had finished the pheromone matching report on her lap, so she wanted to check Rong Shu’s secondary differentiation results. She secretly leaned her head over.
When Rong Shu noticed, she generously didn’t fuss and even proactively shifted her own report toward the middle so Yu Qianyan could see more clearly.
Unexpectedly, when Rong Shu had also carefully finished reading her own grade results and wanted to look at Yu Qianyan’s report, Yu Qianyan’s head was still leaning over on her side. Their foreheads collided with a solid, muffled thud.
Rong Shu glared at her, snatched the pheromone report, took a quick glance at the final result, and then threw it back. She crossed her arms and glared coldly at Yu Qianyan.
“You can continue your explanation now.”
Yu Qianyan coughed lightly. Her gaze drifted a bit, and she organized her thoughts before beginning to recount her previous excuse. She pushed the reasons for her own rank upgrade and Rong Shu’s secondary differentiation onto their persistent sword training and herbal baths. She claimed they were ancestral secrets she had stumbled upon that possessed the effect of significantly boosting ranks, and she stated that she had asked Rong Shu to keep quiet about it to prevent the secret method from leaking out. This included the fact that the medicinal baths Rong Shu soaked in every day were prepared by Yu Qianyan herself, with no one else involved.
As for why Yu Qianyan’s rank had risen silently while Rong Shu had undergone a secondary differentiation, she reasoned it was because Rong Shu’s foundation was poor, and the improvement had been too sudden.
After all, one had only seen a physical rank increase from SS to SSS, while the other had undergone a double improvement spanning several levels, with her mental strength going from B-rank to 3S-rank and her physique from C+ to S-rank.
This half-truth sounded logical, but Rong Shu only considered Yu Qianyan’s words to be utter nonsense.
If it were a real family secret recipe, why hadn’t she heard a single word about it in her past life?
Moreover, such a shocking treasure, even if the Yu ancestors didn’t want to pass it on to outsiders, they surely wouldn’t have been so stingy with their own descendants, would they? If they had used it, why wasn’t the Yu family full of S-ranks and double-S ranks? They probably could have cultivated quite a few of the rarest 3S-ranks, and would they not have risen to prominence long ago?
If she were in their shoes, and if she were a Yu ancestor, it would be up for debate whether the Empire was surnamed Qi or Yu today.
But if it hadn’t been used by their own family, that made even less sense.
This was a secret recipe that could increase ranks!
If it could raise even an ordinary rank like hers to above S-rank, how was that any different from playing god? How could they bear to keep it hidden and let it collect dust?
However, the Yu family ancestral claim was false, but the effect of the medicine was likely real. She just didn’t know where Yu Qianyan had gotten it from, or if there were any special restrictions on using it.
Forget it, it didn’t matter where it came from. Since it was currently to her benefit, and Rong Shu was in a good mood, she didn’t fuss too much with Yu Qianyan, temporarily treating it as a gift from the heavens for their rebirth.
However, there was still one suspicious point. Whether it was sword training or herbal baths, these were things aimed at tendons, bones, and flesh, so how could they have such a significant effect on mental strength?
With doubts in her heart, Rong Shu didn’t intend to hold back and asked directly, only to be met with an equally confused expression from Yu Qianyan.
The two stared at each other for a long time. Only then did Rong Shu believe that Yu Qianyan truly didn’t know, so she could only make a mental note of it, leaving it for future study.
Rong Shu stopped talking, her expression very calm, but her eyes were fixed on a certain spot, appearing as if she were lost in thought.
Seeing this, Yu Qianyan knew she had passed the hurdle and quietly let out a long breath of relief.
She had spent over a month with Rong Shu, and she realized that the other person’s true temperament was not as soft and easy to bully as she had first thought. On the contrary, she was quite persistent and resilient, and could even be described as competitive, holding grudges, not easily provoked, and narrow-minded. Coupled with her intelligence, sharpness, and keen insight into human nature, Yu Qianyan found it inevitably stressful when facing Rong Shu’s probing questions.
Yu Qianyan didn’t feel disappointed by the true side of Rong Shu she had touched upon. On the contrary, she appreciated this inner soul, which was a stark contrast to her first impression, even more.
While the weak were certainly worthy of pity, only the strong would be truly regarded by Yu Qianyan as equals with whom she could share her heart.
Rong Shu possessed the potential of a strong person. She was very willing to see Rong Shu climb out of the mud with her help, shake off the dust, and grow gorgeous petals and sharp thorns, becoming a beautiful rose that no one could pluck.
She followed Rong Shu’s blank, thoughtful gaze, saw the daisy swaying in the wind, and walked over to close the window.
Without the wind, the transparent window only let in clear, warm sunlight. The temperature near the windowsill gradually rose under the light, and the little daisy seemed to straighten its stamen and petals, comfortably enjoying a sunbath.
Yu Qianyan stroked the edge of the petals and suddenly remembered the dress left at the shop.
That should be the dress Rong Shu was to wear at their wedding, or more accurately, their wedding.
Yu Qianyan rubbed her cheeks, which were flushed and warm from the sunlight after standing by the window for so long. She turned to Rong Shu and said, “Once things here are settled, I’ll tell Mother, and we can go back to the shop to see your dress, okay? We didn’t have time to try it on last time.”
Rong Shu was still lost in her own thoughts and only spared a shred of attention to give a perfunctory response to Yu Qianyan. It was only after a few seconds that she realized what she had said, and she immediately remembered that fleeting glimpse of the dress. A secret joy inexplicably welled up in her heart.
The wedding date was right around the corner now.
