- Chapter 20 - Secondary Differentiation, Unexpected Developments
Seeing Rong Shu collapse, Yu Qianyan naturally had no time to worry about anything else and hurried over to check on her.
It was the same familiar symptoms: fever, weakness, and that explosive, sweet, alluring scent spreading everywhere.
Clearly, Rong Shu had pushed herself into another heat. Perhaps because Yu Qianyan’s rank was high and the concentration of pheromone-rich mucus directly secreted by her glands was so potent, Rong Shu didn’t even have a moment to resist before being instantly engulfed by waves of heat, losing consciousness entirely.
Yu Qianyan let out a heavy sigh. She wanted to lift her up, but the scent of her own pheromones hadn’t dissipated yet, and she was terrified that more contact would only worsen Rong Shu’s condition, or that she herself might be affected by Rong Shu’s pheromones in turn.
However, she couldn’t just leave her lying there, fearing she would catch a cold lying on the floor in her thin wedding dress.
What was even more distressing was that although Rong Shu was unconscious, her body retained its instinctual reaction. She followed the scent of Yu Qianyan’s pheromones, trying to cling to her, with an almost greedy expression on her flushed face—she looked exactly like a man-eating siren from a supernatural folktale.
Yu Qianyan sighed again, expertly peeling her off her body and carrying her to the sofa lounge. After ensuring she wouldn’t roll off, she intended to find the shopkeeper to see if there were any spare suppressants.
Just as she was about to leave, the door opened. A Beta who looked quite senior, wearing a vintage long skirt, walked in with a group of attendants who were holding the shop’s “treasure” as if it were a precious heirloom.
The Beta in the long skirt smiled cheerily. As soon as she stepped in, she said loudly to Yu Qianyan, “Miss Yu, I’ve brought the dress”
“Don’t come in!” Yu Qianyan barked, startling them into a sudden halt, looking at each other in confusion.
“All Alphas and Omegas, get out! Are there any suppressants in the shop? If so, get a Beta to bring them over immediately!”
The Beta in the long skirt understood immediately. She quickly ordered the shop’s ventilation system turned on, ushered all the Alphas and Omegas out, and sent a few agile staff members to the counter to fetch the best suppressants. She left only four Betas behind, who cautiously took the dress and placed it on a mannequin.
Just as the Alphas and Omegas were evacuating, one Alpha at the front faintly caught the thin, sweet scent drifting from inside. He immediately sniffed the air in a daze, a look of intoxication crossing his face, and wandered straight inside in a trance.
The moment he made a move, the sharp, hawk-like gaze of the Beta in the long skirt locked onto him. Seeing that this person was bold enough to try and sneak in, she immediately grabbed the back of his collar, yanked him back, and delivered a fierce, full-force slap across his face, leaving a perfect handprint and five shallow, bloody nail marks.
Though the Beta in the long skirt was older, her rank was not low. She was several levels higher in constitution than this Alpha, and she hadn’t held back at all. The force of the slap sent the man spinning in a half-circle.
The Alpha, stunned by the pain, snapped out of his delirious state. Realizing too late what kind of person he had almost offended, he trembled in fear, so grateful to the Beta for saving his life that he wanted to kneel and kowtow in thanks.
The Beta in the long skirt waved her hand impatiently, “Get lost, get out of here!”
Only then did the Alpha run off, stammering his thanks.
The Beta in the long skirt paced back and forth, feeling uneasy. Relying on her age and the fact that she was a Beta and wouldn’t be affected by pheromones, she strolled over toward Yu Qianyan.
Yu Qianyan glanced at her, noting it wasn’t the shopkeeper she had dealt with earlier, and looked quite puzzled.
The Beta in the long skirt introduced herself tactfully, “My name is He, I’m the owner of this shop. I sent the manager, Xiao Zhang, to look after the outside. A distinguished guest like you should be handled by me personally.”
“Boss He.” Yu Qianyan nodded slightly, then turned her worried gaze back to Rong Shu.
Earlier, Rong Shu still had the strength to entangle herself with her, but in just this short moment, she had become completely unresponsive, and her body temperature was rising rapidly.
If it weren’t for the fact that she was still frantically releasing pheromones, Yu Qianyan would have thought she had fallen seriously ill.
That wasn’t impossible, either. Rong Shu was weak to begin with, and had been under immense pressure recently, her mind constantly on edge, and her body never getting any rest. It was hard enough just to come out for an outing today, but in such a state, the moment she relaxed, she was prone to collapsing.
Yu Qianyan calculated that if the suppressant didn’t work, she would have to rush Rong Shu to the emergency room immediately, without a second’s delay.
Just as she was fretting, a few “tsk tsk tsk” sounds of exclamation reached her ears.
Yu Qianyan frowned at Boss He. The latter had an expression of wonder, and noticing Yu Qianyan looking over, she quickly put on a smiling face and said, “Miss Yu and your fiancée are really close, aren’t you?”
Yu Qianyan said nothing and kept looking at her.
Boss He didn’t feel embarrassed by the lack of response and continued to exclaim with a smile, “You know, Miss Rong is beautiful, and her pheromones are pleasant too. In all my years, I haven’t smelled many pheromones more unique or enchanting than Miss Rong’s.”
“You can smell her pheromones, too?”
“What a strange thing to ask!” Seeing that the conversation had opened up, Boss He lifted her skirt, sat down on the floor, and settled in for a long talk, “Betas just aren’t affected by pheromones, it doesn’t mean we’ve lost our sense of smell. Of course I can smell them.”
So that was it. Yu Qianyan was secretly amazed.
When she was integrating the memories of the original host, she had mostly viewed the world from an Alpha’s perspective. The key figures in the plot were mostly Alphas or Omegas, so she hadn’t paid much attention to trivial facts that only Betas would have personal experience with.
“But Miss Yu, why don’t you just give Miss Rong a temporary mark? It would save your fiancée the suffering of using suppressants.”
Yu Qianyan didn’t answer that question; she couldn’t give an answer.
She wasn’t a saint. Worrying for Rong Shu was one thing, but she was still harboring some resentment.
Yu Qianyan thought to herself that she should let her suffer through the suppressant to teach her a lesson, so she wouldn’t act so recklessly in the future.
Alpha pheromones naturally had arousing effects on Omegas. Just smelling them floating in the air from a distance was enough to risk losing control, yet Rong Shu had gone and licked the mucus filled with her pheromones right into her mouth. If she didn’t go into heat, who would?
Although the original host’s memories didn’t contain this information, Yu Qianyan was an Alpha now, and she understood the changes in her body quite well.
From the physical reaction she had experienced after her glands were pressed, it was clear that what was being transmitted to her whole body was not just an unquenchable desire, but endless strength and a restless, overwhelming energy, even mixed with a bit of anger and tyranny. It was clear that the roles of Alpha and Omega glands were vastly different.
The Omega’s glands were sensitive and fragile, much like most Omegas themselves; the slightest touch would soften their body and weaken their will, making them submissive and allowing them to be used to trigger heats or be marked.
But the Alpha’s glands, aside from secreting pheromones, were clearly more like an aphrodisiac stimulant. In normal sexual encounters, one wouldn’t need such a lethal weapon. If it had been any other Alpha, after what Rong Shu had just done, she probably wouldn’t have been able to walk out of this room for three to five days.
Seeing that Yu Qianyan didn’t want to discuss this topic, Boss He didn’t pry further. Just in time, the suppressant arrived. She quickly got up, ran to get it, and handed it to Yu Qianyan.
One injection later, Rong Shu slowly opened her eyes after a short while.
However, her face was still very flushed, and her high fever hadn’t subsided; she was just a bit more conscious.
Yu Qianyan thought the dosage wasn’t enough and prepared to give Rong Shu another shot, but she was stopped by Boss He.
Boss He, who always wore a smiling face, straightened her expression and pulled Yu Qianyan to a far corner.
Rong Shu gazed blurrily in the direction they had gone, her eyes flickering. She faked closing her eyes to rest, her ears twitching.
“Miss Yu, have you and Miss Rong tested your pheromone compatibility?”
“Not yet, why?”
“I think the compatibility between you two is probably very high. Although I don’t know what caused this accident, I suspect it has something to do with you.”
“What are you trying to say?” Yu Qianyan was puzzled. She felt Boss He was really beating around the bush, and she was feeling so anxious that her tone turned cold.
Boss He stopped being subtle and said bluntly, “I heard from Xiao Zhang that Miss Rong had to change her dress because she grew taller in a short period of time, making her original wedding dress too small. But looking at Miss Rong’s sudden collapse and the fact that she hasn’t recovered even after a suppressant… have you considered, Miss Yu, that Miss Rong is undergoing secondary differentiation?”
