- Chapter 32 - You Are My Hopeless Love Hidden Beneath Great Friendship
Lin Yuan nodded. He had thought President Fu was truly immersed in love and indifferent to worldly affairs.
Thank goodness, thank goodness.
“Lee, is it possible that it’s time for you to make a comeback?” The woman on the other end of the phone sobbed tearfully.
Li Muli guiltily touched the back of her neck. It was quite awkward.
“Lee, think about how long it’s been since you last contacted us. Do you even remember?”
“Do you remember Gu Shi and me waiting bitterly for you across the ocean?”
“Lee, does your conscience not ache at all?”
Li Muli recalled that she had studied fashion design in college. In her sophomore year, by chance, she met Meng Ruo and Gu Shi, and the three of them started a studio together.
The joint venture between the young master of the Gu family and the daughter of the Meng family was met with widespread acclaim almost as soon as it launched.
She was responsible for designing the blueprints behind the scenes.
In the second semester of her junior year, when she was twenty, the two of them went abroad together.
She remembered that in her previous life, they had returned to the country when she was twenty-three, and the company grew larger and larger.
The name “Lee” also became increasingly famous.
By the time she was twenty-five, it had almost become a limited edition.
But very few people knew that she was Lee.
As expected, Meng Ruo’s voice chimed in, “Lee, Gu Shi and I are returning to the country the day after tomorrow. Don’t forget, okay?”
“Received, received.”
“Let me talk to Muli,” a male voice interjected from the other side.
“No way, call her yourself.”
“Hand it over!” Gu Shi stepped forward to snatch the phone. In the struggle, he accidentally brushed against Meng Ruo’s soft chest, sending a tingling sensation throughout her body.
Gu Shi didn’t notice and continued grinning carelessly. “Got it now, didn’t I? You little rascal.”
Li Muli laughed heartily on her end. These two were still the same bickering pair as always.
Yet their relationship was as close as if they were one person.
A childhood bond, flowing gently like a steady stream.
“Muli, don’t forget to pick me up,” Gu Shi said arrogantly.
Li Muli rolled her eyes. “You can get lost.”
“Li Muli, so you don’t care anymore, huh? You’ve found someone else, haven’t you? You don’t love me anymore, do you?”
Li Muli raised an eyebrow and shrugged. “If that’s what you think, there’s nothing I can do.”
“Heartless woman!”
“Get lost!”
Gu Shi chattered incessantly, fooling around without a care, completely unaware of the dimmed expression on the girl beside him.
After hanging up, he noticed Meng Ruo sitting quietly next to him. Gu Shi stared at her suspiciously, looking left and right, feeling that something was off.
“Little Ruo Ruo, did you suddenly realize how handsome I am? Hah, have you fallen for me?” Gu Shi lifted Meng Ruo’s chin and winked.
Meng Ruo pushed his hand away, called him an idiot, and ran out.
Left behind, Gu Shi scratched his head in confusion.
So strange.
But he still looked at the return flight tickets, feeling overjoyed.
He wondered how that silly girl Li Muli had been these past two years. How heartless of her to barely contact them.
Meng Ruo, who had run out, pursed her lips and wandered aimlessly down the street, letting the wind brush against her.
The three of them were very good friends. She was the sweet and cute one, Li Muli effortlessly switched between being quirky and poised, and Gu Shi was the one who fooled around and acted adorable.
If they were truly just friends, then at least their hearts should be clear and untroubled.
But hers wasn’t clear she liked him.
He didn’t know.
She had once wondered if Gu Shi liked Li Muli, but she dismissed the thought. His frivolous, carefree demeanor often made it hard for her to see through him.
He would occasionally tease her, flirt with her.
But he would do the same with others.
She and he were friends, brothers, sisters, best friends they could be anything.
Except lovers.
He was her hopeless love hidden beneath the guise of a great friendship.
They say, how could you not feel anything when sitting by a bonfire?
She always accompanied him without hesitation did he really feel nothing?
She wasn’t brave; she didn’t dare speak up. She was afraid that if certain things were said, they would change, and they might not even remain friends.
At least they were both single there was always hope.
Meng Ruo comforted herself and dialed Gu Shi’s number. “A-Shi, I’m at the railing by the river. Come pick me up.”
“What were you doing there?” Gu Shi sounded out of breath.
“Just catching some wind.”
“Wait there, I’m coming to find you.”
Meng Ruo curled her lips into a smile. Sometimes, whether she liked him or not didn’t matter so much—at least she was important to him.
A few minutes later, she saw the man’s figure. Meng Ruo waved at him with a smile, and he ran over.
“What’s wrong all of a sudden?” Gu Shi stared at her.
She had acted strangely, running off suddenly and not returning for a long time. When he called, no one answered, so he had searched several of her usual spots.
“I was thinking about the days when the three of us used to hang out. Lili hasn’t been around these past two years.”
“We can still hang out when we get back,” Gu Shi said, gently brushing aside the hair that had fallen over the girl’s eyes.
Meng Ruo raised her fist. “Touch me again, and I’ll chop your hand off.”
“Hey, Xiao Ruoruo, why have you gotten fiercer after two years abroad?” Gu Shi returned to his usual playful demeanor.
Meng Ruo flipped her hair and gave him a flirtatious glance. “Maybe it’s because you’ve become more of an idiot.”
Gu Shi reached out and ruffled her hair vigorously. “It’s my fault for making such a terrible friend.”
“If I could go back in time, I’d tell little Gu Shi never to save little Meng Ruo. She’ll repay kindness with enmity,” Meng Ruo stuck out her tongue.
After messing up her hair, the man started pinching her cheeks. “Go ahead, repay it, you little troublemaker.”
“Let go.”
“No.”
“I’ll kick you, Gu Shi.”
“You weren’t this fierce when you asked me to pick you up.”
“Then go back now.”
“But I have to bring you along, my dear ancestor,” Gu Shi said with a helpless expression.
Meng Ruo lifted her chin proudly. “Then, little Shizi, carry me back.”
Gu Shi looked incredulous and spoke disdainfully, “No, you’re heavy.”
Even as he said it, he resignedly bent over. “Come on, ancestor.”
Meng Ruo leaped onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck, and said cheerfully, “Let’s go, little Shizi.”
“Ancestor, you should lose some weight,” Gu Shi said, adjusting the girl on his back.
Meng Ruo’s eyes sparkled mischievously as she gave his butt a light slap. “Little Shizi, are you not in good shape?”
The man’s body visibly swayed for a moment before he steadied himself. “Meng Ruo, behave.”
The softness on his back and the fleeting touch on his butt made Gu Shi feel a burning sensation.
Prosperous, democratic, civilized, harmonious; free, equal, just, lawful.
This was family someone he had grown up with. He couldn’t entertain improper thoughts.
Gu Shi, a person shouldn’t be too beastly.
He must have been restraining himself too much lately.
Seeing the man’s expression darken, Meng Ruo poked his back. “Sorry, A-Shi.”
“Behave.”
“Okay,” Meng Ruo obediently rested her head on his back.
After dropping her off, Gu Shi fled from Meng Ruo as if he were being chased, needing to cool down.
Something was wrong, very wrong. How could he have had such thoughts about that little girl Meng Ruo just now?
It would be better to go back early and see Muli soon.
Gu Shi took a sip of cold water, trying to conceal the restlessness in his heart.
He absolutely couldn’t let the little girl know about his beastly thoughts.
Otherwise, he had no idea how she would think of him.
