- Chapter 16 - A Twelve-Year-Old’s Crush, Told to You
“Muli, your lipstick is smudged,” someone reminded her.
“Oh, how affectionate!”
“President Fu must be in a hurry”
“With such a beauty, who could resist?”
A crowd began gossiping as they saw Li Muli return. Everyone was shrewd enough to know who to flatter.
Li Muli smiled faintly, took the mirror handed to her by Zhuang Lin, and went to the dressing room to touch up her makeup before coming back out.
The human heart is the most unpredictable thing in this world. All she could do was maintain boundaries with everyone she encountered by chance.
“Has President Fu left?” the director asked Li Muli as soon as he saw her.
“He’s gone, Director. Just treat me like an ordinary, low-tier actress. Do what you need to do,” Li Muli said seriously.
The director nodded. “Of course, of course.”
He admired people like her those who didn’t act arrogantly just because they had influence. A girl like this was destined for a bright future in the entertainment industry.
And with such a powerful man backing her, her future was undoubtedly limitless.
Though, that big shot was truly intimidating.
On the other hand, the director began to gleefully think: About that business of Big Boss Fu being a stand-in and also investing in my project.
“Everyone, you’ve worked hard. Today’s filming is over. We’re almost done, so hang in there a little longer,” the director encouraged.
“Jiang Mo, most of Tang Tang’s scenes are with you. After the cast change, we’ll need to film intensively at some point,” the director called out to Jiang Mo.
Jiang Mo nodded. “Okay.”
For the first time in a long while, Li Muli received a phone call from her father.
“Muli, it’s been a while since you’ve been home. Come back for a meal when you have time,” her father said over the phone.
“I know, Dad.”
After a long silence, her father cautiously asked, “Muli, are you dating someone?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of person are they? What’s their family background like?”
Li Muli let out a bitter laugh. At first glance, it seemed like a caring father-daughter conversation, but only after living a second life did she realize that her father’s every move was calculated, all to arrange a marriage for her.
All so that Li Muqing could live a life of wealth and happiness.
No wonder she was the gentle and dignified daughter of the Li family, while Li Muqing was the mischievous little imp.
Li Muli composed herself and replied as she usually would, “He’s a good person, Dad. I’ll come home for dinner tomorrow.”
“Muli, matching social status is very important. The daughter of the Li family must find someone truly worthy of her.”
“Dad, I have something to attend to. I’ll hang up now,” Li Muli said, ending the call. She slipped into the restroom, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.
She knew Fu Chenyan was waiting for her outside. But she didn’t want him to see her in such a pitiful state.
Her thoughts raced, yet it felt like she wasn’t thinking at all.
She stood blankly in front of the mirror.
She hadn’t wanted to cry, but here she was, being weak again.
Li Muli, it’s okay, it’s okay.
She comforted herself over and over. It was just a matter of not being loved. Once she stepped outside, she would still be the strong and beautiful Li Muli.
She checked her phone and saw many missed calls from Mr. Fu, along with numerous WeChat messages.
“Mr. Fu, I’ll be right there! Wait for me a little longer,” she replied, reverting to her usual tone.
She walked a few steps forward and saw Fu Chenyan standing not far away. She quickly rushed into his arms.
“Were you worried?” Li Muli asked with a smile.
“You hid away to cry.”
Li Muli froze, looking up to see the man’s serious expression, as if her hiding to cry was a grave matter.
She quickly changed the subject. “Let’s go home. I want to see our new place.”
Fu Chenyan held the girl’s hand without saying a word.
Back in the car, Lin Yuan, sensing the tense atmosphere, quickly lowered the partition.
Fu Chenyan pulled the girl into his embrace. “What’s wrong, baby?”
The girl nestled in his arms, smiling sweetly. “I want to see our home.”
Seeing her change the subject, Fu Chenyan leaned down and gently kissed her cheek. “Don’t hide away and cry. Talk to me, I’m here.”
Li Muli closed her eyes. “Okay,” she said softly before drifting off to sleep.
The man lowered his gaze to look at the person in his arms. She would never know the panic and fear he had felt when he couldn’t find her earlier.
That feeling of loss felt strangely familiar, as if he had lost her once before.
He leaned down again and kissed her closed eyelids, pouring all his tenderness and love into the gesture.
He was certain sometimes, the depth of one’s love for another grows with every passing second.
When they arrived at their destination and he saw the girl sleeping soundly, he carried her into the master bedroom.
He then went to the study to fetch some paper and a pen, settling beside the sleeping girl to continue drawing chibi-style illustrations.
The first drawing depicted the girl whispering into the man’s ear, while he gazed at her with sparkling eyes.
The caption read: You are the most beautiful thing in my life.
The second drawing showed the man leaning down to place a gentle kiss on the girl resting against him.
The caption read: That day, the gods bestowed their light upon me.
He took photos and uploaded them to his account.
When they grew old, he would scroll through each post with his beloved, reminiscing about all the love they had shared over the years.
After tidying up the papers, he noticed the girl was still asleep.
Not wanting to disturb her, Fu Chenyan stepped out to make a call. “Auntie Zhong, let’s prepare hotpot today.”
The girl had once said that having hotpot could make everything better when she was feeling down.
A smile tugged at the corners of Fu Chenyan’s lips as he pushed the door open and saw the girl awake, sitting on the bed in a daze.
“You’re awake.”
“Fu Chenyan, hold me,” the girl murmured in a sleepy, coquettish tone.
Fu Chenyan stepped forward, wrapping both her and the blanket in his arms as he chuckled affectionately. “You little rascal.”
“How are you so good to me?” Li Muli leaned against his chest contentedly, her voice sweet.
Fu Chenyan stroked her silky hair. “I just want my baby to be happy.”
Li Muli wrapped her arms around his waist and whispered, “I’m not a child of the Li family. None of them love me, and I don’t even know who my real parents are.”
She sounded just like a little kid tattling to an adult.
Fu Chenyan froze, this was something he hadn’t uncovered in his investigations.
“Your parents must have loved you very much. How could anyone not love our precious Muli?”
After a pause, he added seriously, “Muli, I love you deeply. From now on, I’ll make up for all the love others failed to give you, okay?”
His eyes were filled with nothing but tenderness and sincerity.
Li Muli burst into laughter. “Mr. Fu, tell me, did you memorize a whole book of sweet nothings somewhere?”
Fu Chenyan shook his head. “Every word comes from my heart.”
“Such a smooth talker, Mr. Fu. Hehe, I love it!” Li Muli covered her face, giggling.
“Don’t hide and cry alone from now on. I’m here for you.”
“Yay, I’ll cry in your arms from now on.”
“You can cry on me.”
Mr. Fu, are you driving on the fast lane again?
Suddenly remembering something, Li Muli grinned mischievously. “Let me share some gossip with you, Mr. Fu.”
“When I was twelve, I had a crush on a boy. He was really, really handsome.”
“His hands were beautiful, and his voice was so pleasant.”
“I even wrote him a love letter, but I never gave it to him.”
“By the way, when I was little, I even kept a diary to commemorate the brief love of my youth.”
“If he didn’t like me, fine, but he was especially cold, and then I secretly cried about it.”
“I’ve told you my secret now, Mr. Fu.”
The crush I had at twelve, I’m telling you about at twenty-three.
Even if you don’t know, I’m sharing with you the parts of my life you weren’t part of.
