- Chapter 40 - Why? We are innocent, and I am straight to a fault..."
Yu Yilin was swift as lightning, dodging and weaving amidst the attacks of three tall bodyguards.
Her moves were simple and effective, devoid of any unnecessary flourish, consisting entirely of deadly techniques honed in real combat: elbow strikes, knee jabs, grappling, and throat locks. Every move was precisely aimed at joints and vital points, accompanied by the sound of rushing air.
Bang!
With an over-the-shoulder throw, one bodyguard was slammed hard onto the floor, emitting a muffled, heavy thud.
Crack!
A precise joint lock, and the other bodyguard’s wrist let out a grating, dislocated sound. He screamed and retreated.
However, two fists could only fight so many hands. Another bodyguard attacked from the other side, landing a heavy punch to her ribs. She let out a muffled groan, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth, but her eyes became even fiercer.
She used her body’s flexibility and explosive power to absorb the attack, countering with a vicious hand-chop to the side of the third bodyguard’s neck.
The fight was intense and brutal.
Although Yu Yilin was incredibly skilled, she also had to focus on protecting Si Xiaoxiao behind her, and she quickly found herself at a disadvantage.
Sweat soaked her clothes, she had multiple cuts and bruises, and her breathing became labored.
But she gritted her teeth, like a wounded lone wolf, exploding with astonishing combat power. Relying on skill and sheer will, she insisted on fighting.
The superior, never-yielding, inherent qualities of a Special Forces officer were displayed to the fullest in her.
Even when cornered, she would find a way to turn the tide—this was Yu Yilin’s unique brilliance.
Driven by her conviction, she struck down the bodyguards one by one, until the last one was caught in a throat lock. After struggling for a few moments, he finally rolled his eyes and passed out.
The tense and thrilling fight was over.
Yu Yilin gasped for air, let go, and staggered to her feet. Her clothes were stained with dust and blood, and she was cut and bruised in several places.
She wiped the blood from her mouth and looked at Gong Zhiyuan, who stood not far away, watching everything with cold eyes. Her expression was complex: “A-Yuan… stop this. Let us go.”
Assaulting an officer was a serious crime. Yu Yilin didn’t want Gong Zhiyuan to stray onto a wrong path.
While no one else was present, she hoped Gong Zhiyuan would end this mistaken entanglement.
“Are you that concerned about her?” Gong Zhiyuan looked quietly at her, at the groaning bodyguards on the ground, at the shocking injuries on Yu Yilin’s body, the blood on her mouth, and the completely unharmed and well-protected Si Xiaoxiao.
The insane fury on her face seemed to have receded somewhat, replaced by a deeper, more despairing sorrow. She slowly walked towards Yu Yilin, her steps slightly shaky, her body as light as a sheet of paper.
“Go? You want to leave me again?”
Her voice was very soft, with a thick nasal tone, as if she had reverted to the fragile rich young lady, the delicate, easily broken doll.
Finally, she reached Yu Yilin and raised her hand. Her trembling fingertips seemed to want to touch the wound on Yu Yilin’s face but dared not land.
Just as Yu Yilin was confused by the instant fragility and sorrow she displayed, and her taut nerves subconsciously relaxed—
The trace of sorrow in Gong Zhiyuan’s eyes was instantly swallowed by icy madness. She suddenly flung open her arms like a moth flying into a flame, hugging Yu Yilin with all her might.
“Don’t go! I won’t allow you to go! You won’t go anywhere!” Her voice suddenly became shrill and frantic. Her arms locked around Yu Yilin’s waist like iron hoops; the immense strength completely belied her frail appearance.
Yu Yilin certainly had the strength to push her away, but she still softened at the girl’s current obstinacy. Her suspended hand was placed on the girl’s back, and she spoke, “I’m truly sorry. It’s just that I do have a hidden difficulty. If I could…”
Gong Zhiyuan buried her head in Yu Yilin’s neck, her voice possessing a sick kind of possessiveness, interrupting Yu Yilin: “You are mine! Always mine!”
In this brief standoff!
Like a magician, Gong Zhiyuan’s other hand suddenly produced a small syringe.
The needle tip glittered with a cold, faint blue light under the lamp. Her movement was incredibly fast, carrying a sense of desperate madness. Taking advantage of Yu Yilin’s moment of distraction, she fiercely plunged the needle into the skin on Yu Yilin’s neck.
“Ugh!” The unguarded Yu Yilin’s body suddenly stiffened, her eyes wide with disbelief. She only felt a rush of cold liquid quickly injected into her bloodstream. A strong sense of dizziness instantly washed over her like a tide; the scene before her eyes began to blur and spin.
She used the last of her strength to look at Gong Zhiyuan, only seeing the swirling vortex of madness and despair intertwined in those gray-blue eyes, which made her heart ache with sadness.
“Sleep, A-Lin…”
Gong Zhiyuan’s voice was like a devil’s whisper, yet it carried a strange gentleness. She tightly embraced the collapsing Yu Yilin, as if holding a lost and found treasure: “When you wake up, everything will be fine… Let’s start over…”
“Yu Yilin!” Si Xiaoxiao screamed in horror, wanting to rush forward, but was pinned in place by Gong Zhiyuan’s cold glare.
Gong Zhiyuan gently laid the unconscious Yu Yilin flat on the floor, her movements as careful as if handling a rare treasure.
“What did you inject her with?” Si Xiaoxiao felt as if her entire body had fallen into an ice cellar; her pupils were filled with fear.
“Of course, I wouldn’t hurt her, and now…” Gong Zhiyuan slowly stood up and walked step by step toward the pale, frightened Si Xiaoxiao. That chillingly gentle smile reappeared on her face: “You should worry about yourself.”
“Uh, I’m innocent!” Si Xiaoxiao certainly didn’t want to fight a crazy woman, especially not as the third party in her friend’s romance plot. She had a mouth for a reason—to explain things clearly: “She doesn’t dislike you, and please calm down first…”
“Do you love her?” Gong Zhiyuan’s expression was very dangerous; she held another syringe in her hand.
Si Xiaoxiao shook her head like a rattle.
However, that chillingly gentle smile reappeared on Gong Zhiyuan’s face: “I know you. A minor celebrity from China. While investigating A-Lin, your existence was very much an eyesore.”
???
What did she do! How was she an eyesore!
And who are you calling a minor celebrity!!!
Just as Si Xiaoxiao was about to explode, she saw the shiny syringe in Gong Zhiyuan’s hand and quickly backed down, hastily declaring her loyalty: “We are innocent, and I am straight to a fault!”
“Is that so?” Gong Zhiyuan smiled: “I don’t believe it.”
Si Xiaoxiao’s heart pounded. Looking at Gong Zhiyuan, who was closing in, she felt like prey targeted by a venomous snake. She instinctively backed away, but her back hit the cold wall, leaving her nowhere to retreat.
Just then—
The large door that Gong Zhiyuan had closed was violently broken open. The dazzling moonlight and the colorful lights from the beach instantly flooded the dimly lit living room, outlining a tall figure standing against the light in the doorway.
It was Li Ting; she arrived just in time.
She was slightly panting, clearly having rushed there.
Her deep eyes were like a cold pool, instantly locking onto the scene in the living room: the unconscious Yu Yilin on the ground, the menacing Gong Zhiyuan holding a syringe, and the terrified Si Xiaoxiao cornered against the wall.
“Miss Gong, is this your way of entertaining guests?” Her expression suddenly turned dangerous: “First you trick me into going elsewhere, and then… you treat my friend like this.”
The corner of Gong Zhiyuan’s lips seemed to hook up very slightly: “How did you know something was wrong?”
Li Ting’s expression was sour, glaring unhappily at Si Xiaoxiao: “Anyone who is inexplicably hit by a coconut would know they’ve become unlucky.”
In stark contrast to her expression, Si Xiaoxiao was so happy she almost jumped up: “Lucky! You arrived just in time! Hurry! Charge, Li Ting Beast!”
Even Si Xiaoxiao herself couldn’t explain why the sense of security Li Ting gave her was higher than that of Yu Yilin, the Special Forces officer.
“Both of you may leave, but A-Lin must stay.” Realizing the situation was unfavorable, Gong Zhiyuan chose to compromise.
Si Xiaoxiao, of course, disagreed. Crossing her arms, her small mouth immediately started chattering: “It’s two against one now! Lady Luck is on our side! We are incredibly strong!”
However, Li Ting, the savior, chose to accept the proposal: “Fine, I’ll take her away.”
“???” Si Xiaoxiao suddenly turned her head to look at Li Ting, her cat-like round eyes wide with disbelief and shock.
She could hardly believe her ears!
Li Ting actually agreed?
Agreed to leave the unconscious Yu Yilin with this dangerous, clearly unstable Gong Zhiyuan?!
Gong Zhiyuan also seemed a little surprised; a fleeting hint of astonishment flashed in her gray-blue eyes, which was immediately replaced by a deeper scrutiny. She slightly lowered the hand holding the syringe and waved, and several more bodyguards filed into the room.
“As long as you don’t interfere with me and A-Lin, we won’t be enemies.” Gong Zhiyuan’s voice returned to that soft, foreign-accented tone, as if the earlier madness had never happened. She slightly turned to the side, gesturing toward the door: “Then, the two of you, please leave. Regarding tonight’s events, I think both of you know what should and shouldn’t be said.”
“Let’s go!” Li Ting stopped giving Si Xiaoxiao time to hesitate. She stepped forward and grabbed Si Xiaoxiao’s wrist. Her fingers were cool, and the grip was too firm to escape.
The bodyguards blocking the door deliberately made way for the two of them. Si Xiaoxiao was forcefully dragged by Li Ting, stumbling toward the broken light at the doorway.
She looked back repeatedly, watching Gong Zhiyuan slowly squat down, gently brushing the sweat-drenched hair from Yu Yilin’s forehead. The action was chillingly tender. Gong Zhiyuan didn’t even look at them again, as if the whole world contained only her and Yu Yilin.
It wasn’t until she walked out of the oppressive seaside villa and was once again enveloped by the salty sea breeze and the loud music that Si Xiaoxiao suddenly pulled her hand away from Li Ting. She first spoke somewhat awkwardly: “Thank you for coming to save me…”
“It’s nothing,” Li Ting also stopped and turned around. The moonlight and distant colored lights cast shadows that alternated between light and dark on her face.
“But what about A-Lin…” Following this, Si Xiaoxiao frowned, genuinely worried about her friend’s safety.
However, Li Ting suddenly interrupted her.
The eyes hidden in the darkness burst forth with a strange light.
She asked: “Why can she have her, and I can’t?”
