- Chapter 57 - The Genius of High School and the Art of Pursuit
Monday’s lesson was set to cover circular motion and projectile motion.
Jian Chun had already organized her thoughts and prepared her lesson plans. She intended to have the students preview the material during Sunday’s evening self-study session. Being a head teacher had its perks; since she oversaw so much, she could “selfishly” use vague self-study periods to reclaim review time for her own curriculum.
She made a mental note to confiscate phones during evening study—a weekly ritual. She stuck a Post-it note on her computer as a reminder; the students certainly wouldn’t remind her to take their phones away, though they’d wail in agony if she was even a minute late returning them on Friday.
As she drifted off for a midday nap, a wave of drowsiness overcame her. When she opened her eyes, she was disoriented. She was in a classroom. Some students were starting to read aloud, while others were heading to the restroom.
Jian Chun stared for a long time before realizing these weren’t her students—they were her classmates.
The realization hit her: She was back.
Back in her senior year of high school—the time when hard work and knowledge were the only tools to change the future. Far from feeling despair, she felt a strange surge of excitement. Her previous preparations hadn’t been in vain!
As the class began reciting texts to shake off their sleepiness, Jian Chun joined in. Her voice was dry, and though her mouth moved, her mind wandered. By the end of the afternoon, she realized her brain felt sharper, as if a “meridian” had been unblocked. She felt like she was becoming a genius.
The Strategy for a “High Mountain Flower”
Thinking of geniuses, Jian Chun’s gaze drifted to Yu Siyi.
The current Yu Siyi was quite cute, a stark contrast to the mature, world-famous figure she would become. Jian Chun recalled Jian Niannian’s words—that she and Yu Siyi had married in high school. At the time, she’d dismissed it as a joke, but now she realized it meant they must have gotten together during these years.
Then, a chilling thought struck her. Before waking up in the “future” last time, she had been certain that Yu Siyi didn’t love her. Now that she was back, she had to fix that.
She sat up straight, instinctively looking toward Yu Siyi. Yu Siyi seemed to sense her gaze and looked back. Her cold eyes flickered with a brief, detached acknowledgement—a silent greeting.
Jian Chun’s heart sank. Yu Siyi had once claimed that Jian Chun was the one who pursued her. But how? How does one successfully woo a “High Mountain Flower” (an untouchable beauty) like Yu Siyi?
Jian Chun regretted never asking the future Yu Siyi what exactly had won her over. The stakes were high: if she stayed here for a short time and failed to make Yu Siyi fall for her, she might return to a future that began with the word “Divorce.”
A Clash with Feng Xue
After self-study, Li Ying nudged Jian Chun. Standing in the hallway outside Class 1 was Feng Xue, looking as if she were waiting for someone.
“Is she looking for Yu Siyi again?” Li Ying whispered.
Jian Chun felt a pang of discomfort. But instead of looking for Yu Siyi, Feng Xue’s eyes lit up when she saw Jian Chun. She marched over, looking far from her usual “fragile girl” persona. She looked livid.
“Jian Chun, you’re back,” Feng Xue hissed. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“What for?” Jian Chun asked, unimpressed.
Feng Xue exploded. “Don’t think just because you’ve had a bit of a ‘counter-attack’ (success) that you’re anything special! You’re just a trashy side-character (cannon fodder). I’ve never even cared about you!”
Jian Chun’s face darkened. Li Ying instinctively tried to pull Feng Xue away, afraid Jian Chun would tear her apart.
Feng Xue laughed hysterically. “You piece of trash who wouldn’t last three episodes! You think you’re worthy of competing with me for Yu Siyi? You don’t deserve her!”
Jian Chun took a deep breath. She was more confused than angry. Why was Feng Xue speaking in terms of “episodes” and “cannon fodder”? Was the “plot” forcing these words out?
The Master Plan
On Monday morning, Jian Chun woke up in her cramped, ten-square-meter bedroom. The morning sun hit her bed. She checked her backpack—homework was done. She dressed simply in a pink long-sleeved shirt and jeans, tying her hair into a high ponytail.
At school, she realized she still didn’t have Yu Siyi’s personal contact information. The only bridge they had was a small group chat they used for discussing studies and a stray cat.
During the break, Jian Chun practiced her “best” smile and hovered near Yu Siyi’s desk.
“Your smile looks very fake,” Yu Siyi remarked bluntly.
Zhu Feifei, Yu Siyi’s best friend, burst out laughing.
Jian Chun didn’t give up. She followed Zhu Feifei to the restroom—the classic place for girls to exchange secrets.
“Feifei,” Jian Chun said as they washed their hands. “Do you know what kind of person Siyi likes?”
Zhu Feifei gave her a look of utter disgust. “Not you. Wake up.”
“Then what are the odds of her saying yes if I pursued her?”
Zhu Feifei didn’t even dry her hands; she just shook them, splashing water onto Jian Chun’s face. “Let me see how thick your skin actually is.”
Jian Chun didn’t mind. She knew Zhu Feifei would immediately report this to Yu Siyi. If she couldn’t convince Yu Siyi directly, she would use Zhu Feifei’s mouth to announce her new status: not just a classmate, but a pursuer.
When they returned to the classroom, a furious Zhu Feifei stomped over to Yu Siyi.
“What’s wrong?” Yu Siyi asked, her voice soft as a falling leaf.
“Jian Chun just now—” Zhu Feifei stopped. She realized that if she told Yu Siyi that Jian Chun wanted to pursue her, it might backfire. What if Yu Siyi didn’t hate the idea?
Yu Siyi followed Zhu Feifei’s gaze and saw Jian Chun in the back row, smiling brightly at them.
Zhu Feifei leaned in and whispered, “She followed me to the bathroom. Hmph! Shameless!”
