- Chapter 25 - The "Sea Queen" Controversy and a Rainy Night
Feng Xue had a very difficult day. At first, her friends tried to comfort her, claiming the leaked screenshots were a setup by one of Yu Siyi’s many obsessed admirers. Feng Xue clung to this logic; it was easier than admitting Jian Chun had exposed her.
But the peace didn’t last. Jing Ge, Jian Chun’s “enforcer,” officially entered the fray. Since Jing Ge was well-known, her confirmation that the screenshots were real—and that Feng Xue had been pestering Jian Chun to do her homework for a month—turned the tide. The school’s online forums exploded with ridicule.
Public opinion shifted drastically:
“Feng Xue is so fake!”
“Poor Yu Siyi, having someone like that like her. It’s nauseating.”
“Jian Chun has been so quiet lately, while Feng Xue is the one making a scene.”
Feng Xue, panicking, sent a barrage of messages to Jian Chun. She convinced herself that Jian Chun was only acting out because she was jealous. She assumed Jian Chun was too “cowardly” to confess her own feelings, so she decided to use Yu Siyi to provoke her.
The “Fascinating” Brain
During the morning Chinese class, Jian Chun ignored her vibrating phone. She focused on her teacher, then spent the break in the physics office. By the time the large break arrived, she finally checked her messages.
Feng Xue’s texts were a masterclass in manipulation:
“I only like Yu Siyi because we grew up together…”
“Are you jealous? Why are you ignoring me?”
“If you don’t like me being close to Yu Siyi, I won’t play with her anymore, okay?”
Jian Chun felt a physical urge to gag. She looked at Jing Ge and sighed. “I really want to throw up.”
“Did you see?” Jing Ge whispered, shielding Jian Chun from the classroom cameras. “Feng Xue is claiming her confession to Yu Siyi was just a ‘trick’ to make you jealous.”
Jian Chun was stunned. The plot is spiraling into a dimension I don’t recognize. “She’s using Yu Siyi as a prop to get to me?”
The Bold Declaration
Jian Chun realized that since she couldn’t avoid the drama, she might as well lean into it. She updated her “Zone” (social media status) with a post that was meant for “Friends Only” but was instantly screenshotted and circulated to the entire school:
“Some people think too much. They think I’m ignoring them out of jealousy, when in reality, I just find ‘Someone Else’ much more interesting. So—stop using ‘Someone Else’ as an excuse. You’re just looking for a new fling; I, however, am a legitimate pursuer.”
The school went into a frenzy. “Is Jian Chun confessing to Yu Siyi?!” “She called her ‘Someone Else’—that’s so bold!”
Back in Class 1, Zhu Feifei marched over to Jian Chun’s desk, fuming. “Who is this ‘Someone Else’ you’re talking about?”
Jian Chun glanced toward the back of the room. Yu Siyi was currently sharpening a pencil. Her movements were precise and elegant: she retracted the blade, wiped her hands with a wet wipe, and set the pencil down. Every action was a model of grace.
Prissy, Jian Chun thought. She looked back at Zhu Feifei. “He’s whoever you think he is.”
“Jian Chun, don’t be shameless!” Zhu Feifei barked.
“Why do you care who I like? Do you like ‘Someone Else’ too?” Jian Chun teased.
“You’re the one who likes her!” Zhu Feifei snapped back, then realized her mistake. “I mean—anyway, you’re not allowed to like her!”
Jian Chun licked her dry lips and offered a playful wink toward Yu Siyi’s direction. “I’m going to do it anyway.”
“You—Jian Chun! You’ve got guts!” Zhu Feifei stomped off, defeated by Jian Chun’s sheer lack of shame.
The Rainy Night Encounter
The next day was the monthly exam. It rained for a day and a half, a relentless downpour that matched the intensity of the seniors’ stress. By the time the final exam ended on the evening before the National Day holiday, a thunderstorm had rolled in.
Thunder rumbled, and lightning illuminated the dark buildings of the city. Students scrambled to get home, complaining about soaked shoes and forgotten umbrellas.
Jian Chun always kept an umbrella in her bag. As she walked toward the school exit, she spotted a familiar figure leaning against a pillar.
It was Yu Siyi. She was looking at her phone, her short hair falling over her face. She looked stranded.
Jian Chun initially planned to walk past. But the rain was heavy, and it wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. Remembering their “future” connection, Jian Chun sighed to herself. I’m too kind for my own good.
She turned back, walked up to Yu Siyi, and asked, “Hey. Stranded?”
Yu Siyi looked up from her phone. In the dim light of the hallway, her eyes sparkled like stars. Suddenly, she smiled. “Something the matter?” she asked in a gentle, melodic voice.
Jian Chun’s heart tightened. She shook her umbrella. “Come on. I’ll walk you.”
“Jian Chun, are you trying to curry favor with me?” Yu Siyi asked, her smile turning a bit sharper.
Jian Chun didn’t flinch. “You don’t like me anyway, right?”
Yu Siyi stared at her, as if trying to see into her soul. Before she could answer, Jian Chun reached out and grabbed her arm. With a firm tug, she pulled Yu Siyi into the rain, snapping the umbrella open just as the first drops reached them.
Tugged along by Jian Chun, Yu Siyi’s voice carried a hint of genuine annoyance: “You really are irritating.”
Jian Chun tilted her head and yelled over the roar of the rain, “What? Speak up! I can’t hear you!”
Yu Siyi: “…”
