- Chapter 14 - The First Shot of the Tug-of-War
Almost instantly, instinct overrode thought, and Yu Siyi dialed the number back.
She stared at the screen with a cold, distant expression, her mind racing. She had felt something was off with Jian Chun lately, but she hadn’t looked into it deeply. Now, reflecting on it, she realized the other woman had been acting distant.
Coldly distant.
Since they had been together, they rarely fought. Even during one-sided cold wars, the ice would eventually melt under the other’s persistence.
The wait for the call to connect was only a few seconds, yet it felt agonizingly long, each passing second stretching into an eternity. Finally, the line clicked open.
Yu Siyi’s eyelashes fluttered slightly. Noticing her manager’s inquisitive gaze, she raised a finger to her lips in a silent “shh.” The aura of “do not disturb” emanating from Yu Siyi was so strong that the manager barely dared to breathe.
Yu Siyi stood up and walked into another room, closing the door behind her to find the silence necessary for this conversation.
However, the other end of the line was just as quiet. Jian Chun hadn’t said a word. If it weren’t for the faint sound of breathing, Yu Siyi might have thought no one was there.
“Chun-bao?” Yu Siyi didn’t lead with a demand for an explanation. Instead, she tested the waters with a soft call.
A tiny, muffled “Mhm” came from the other side. Yu Siyi caught it, let out a breath of relief, and got straight to the point.
“What’s wrong with my Chun-bao now? Who upset you? Tell me, and I’ll get even for you.”
Silence stretched for a long time before a voice finally emerged.
“Yu Siyi, I want to talk to you,” Jian Chun said, her voice sounding incredibly serious.
Yu Siyi slowed her speech, her tone softening into a gentle murmur. “Mhm. Go ahead, I’m listening.”
“I’ve been thinking lately,” Jian Chun began, her pace steady. “I’ve seriously reconsidered our relationship.”
“Mhm,” Yu Siyi responded softly.
“Your affection… it has become too much of a burden for me. After thinking it over repeatedly, I feel it would be better if we separated.” Jian Chun spoke quickly, trying not to give her a chance to react.
Waves of shock rippled through Yu Siyi’s eyes. Her gaze locked onto the corner of a pillow on the bed, but her mind seemed to drift to some distant, unreachable place.
“My love for you is a burden?” A light chuckle escaped Yu Siyi’s lips, as if trying to break the heavy atmosphere. She joked, “Fine, then I won’t ‘like’ you anymore. I’ll love you.”
As expected, the person on the other end went silent again.
That was the problem. A flicker of distress crossed Yu Siyi’s face. She didn’t know when it had started, but Jian Chun had begun avoiding her professions of love. Yu Siyi had loved Jian Chun for years—day after day, that love only grew deeper. She enjoyed sharing her heart, seeking a response, and never tiring of the cycle.
The call timer ticked upward.
“The current me… doesn’t seem to like you that much anymore,” Jian Chun said softly.
Yu Siyi’s expression didn’t change as she heard those words, but her heart hammered against her ribs. Every syllable tugged at her soul.
“Is that so?” Yu Siyi asked, her voice heavy. Then she laughed—it was just a subconscious reaction. “If you like me once, you can fall in love with me all over again.”
A sigh traveled through the receiver. “If you insist,” Jian Chun said.
Yu Siyi would absolutely insist.
“Divorce won’t solve any problems, you know?” Yu Siyi soothed. “Don’t overthink things. I’ll come home as early as I can.”
She heard Jian Chun give a faint “Mhm” before the line went dead.
Yu Siyi gripped her phone, her eyes dark and unreadable. She let out a long breath. Divorce?
How could I ever divorce you? Not in this lifetime.
Yu Siyi suppressed her negative emotions. She looked at her reflection in the phone screen; a composed, professional smile sat on her face. Her “little darling” was just being moody and insecure—she simply needed to offer more comfort.
But for her to actually mention divorce…
The corners of Yu Siyi’s lips curled upward. She wasn’t angry at all.
Outside, the manager, Ye Qing, saw Yu Siyi emerge and felt a chill. Why was Yu Siyi wearing that “professional fake smile”? Ye Qing cleared her throat and sat a little further away.
“Are you okay? Is everything alright at home?”
“I’m fine. Everything is fine.” Yu Siyi looked up, her “storytelling eyes” crinkling as she blinked at her manager.
Ye Qing’s hair stood on end. “Um… do you want to take a break?”
“No need,” Yu Siyi smiled. “What’s the rest of the schedule?”
Ye Qing sighed inwardly. Yu Siyi was too dedicated. She had managed Yu Siyi since her debut, watching her grow from a talented rookie to the star she was today.
“After the promotions, there’s a magazine cover shoot and a mobile phone brand endorsement—”
“Cancel them.”
“And several scripts—wait, what did you say?” Ye Qing froze.
“Cancel them,” Yu Siyi repeated. “I want to rest.”
Ye Qing was stunned. This workaholic wanted to rest? This was the peak of her popularity!
Meanwhile, Jian Chun was bracing herself for a long-term battle. She didn’t dare use Rong Zhen as an excuse, fearing Yu Siyi would think she was just jealous.
She hadn’t expected to solve everything in one go. At least now, Yu Siyi had been given fair warning.
Back in the office, Jian Chun saw a few more assignments on her desk. She checked them, but the “problem student” Jin Ziye wasn’t among them.
Feeling restless, she opened Weibo and scrolled to Rong Zhen’s profile. He was a powerhouse with 80 million followers. Jian Chun scrolled down until she found a post where he tagged Yu Siyi.
Rong Zhen: @YuSiyi Teacher Yu is exceptionally talented. It was a pleasure working together.
Jian Chun’s interest peaked. She scrolled to the comments to find Yu Siyi’s reply. Her excitement immediately plummeted.
Yu Siyi: Same here. #Smile
It was posted last night. It was the most perfunctory reply imaginable.
This? Jian Chun thought, her face darkening. This is the “interaction” that made people faint from sweetness?
