Five Years of Studying Medicine, Three Years of Flirting With Guys - Chapter 19
Chapter 19
Seeing that the young man looked like he was about to collapse onto the hospital bed at any second, Tang Linsheng quickly held him back. Just then, the elevator reached the eighth floor. He hurriedly supported the young man and led him to the side so the bed could be rushed into the Eighth Central Intensive Care Unit (CCU).
Tang Linsheng helped him sit on a nearby chair and told him to calm down before hurrying after the others to the ICU. Although the ICU had its own dedicated nursing team, as the nurse who had brought the patient up, he still needed to head over and hand over the details to the nurses there.
Once the handover was complete, Tang Linsheng (the senior) was standing by the patient’s bedside, staring at the bedside ECG monitor with furrowed brows, lost in thought.
Tang Linsheng didn’t want to disturb him, so he left the ICU on his own first.
Just as he opened the door, he almost collided with someone. He quickly covered his forehead with one hand while using the other to push the man in front of him back out. If the ICU didn’t have double doors, given the forceful way this man was trying to charge in, wouldn’t he have contaminated the sterile environment?!
Fortunately, seeing him come out, the boy stopped pushing forward. He gripped Tang Linsheng’s clothes tightly and asked, “How is he?! Is he okay?! When can he come out?!”
Tang Linsheng motioned for him to sit on the hallway chairs and asked, “What is your name, and what is your relationship with Ma Laixi?”
The person’s tears welled up in his eyes. He wiped his face, sniffled, and said, “My name is Xu Haoran. He’s my friend.”
“Where are his parents? When did they say they’d arrive?” Tang Linsheng grabbed the forms from the nurse’s station, filling in the patient’s details as he asked. Since the ER had initially opened the transfer for Ma Laixi to the Baxi ward, but the patient had actually gone to the CCU, he needed to fix the administrative process in between.
“On their way.” He held his head in his hands. Guilt and worry for his best friend had left his mental state completely withered. “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t provoked him, he wouldn’t have drunk like that…”
Tang Linsheng looked at the ER admission slip and asked, “Excessive alcohol consumption? Did Ma Laixi have a cold recently? Does he have high blood pressure or diabetes?”
Xu Haoran looked up, a flash of helplessness in his eyes. He said, “Um… I’m not sure about the cold.”
“Xu Haoran!” An angry female voice rang out behind them. Tang Linsheng turned to see a girl dressed in sexy, hot clothing walking over furiously. She marched up to Xu Haoran and yelled, “Why did you guys force him to drink?! Our cold war is between the two of us, why did you guys have to go and stir up trouble?!”
Tang Linsheng listened from the side. Although it wasn’t directed at him, he was still left stunned by the shouting. While surprised by the girl’s dominant aura, he was also worried she would disturb the patients. He quickly squeezed between the two of them and said, “This is a hospital. Could you both please stop fighting?”
The gazes of both Ma Laixi [likely intended to mean Xu Haoran] and the girl suddenly focused on him. On the surface, Tang Linsheng forced himself to remain unperturbed, wearing an expression that said, “What are you looking at? What I said is right.” He pointed to the digital clock above the hallway and said to the girl, “It’s past twelve midnight. There are patients in the ward area. Calm down first.” Good Lord, it’s already 12:20! I won’t be able to get off work on time.
Tang Linsheng immediately brought Xu Haoran and the person who was presumably Ma Laixi’s girlfriend to the nurse’s station. He sat down at the main computer and quickly entered the patient information while questioning them about the medical history.
“Laixi doesn’t have any drug allergies… he had a cold once three weeks ago… he mentioned his heart felt uncomfortable before, but it passed quickly…”
“He said he felt uncomfortable before?!” Hearing this, Xu Haoran turned and glared at the girl. “Zhao Jiaojiao, he already had warning signs of an illness! Why didn’t you take him to see a doctor?!”
Zhao Jiaojiao gave a cold snort. “Am I his parents? If he doesn’t take care of himself, do I need to manage him? He’s a grown man, can he not even find a hospital?”
Hearing her irresponsible attitude, the expression on Xu Haoran’s face turned fierce. “If it wasn’t for you giving Laixi the cold shoulder and making him depressed, he wouldn’t have been drowning his sorrows in alcohol tonight!!”
“Heh, how funny,” Zhao Jiaojiao rolled her eyes. “He’s the one who did something wrong and wouldn’t apologize. Am I supposed to keep pressing my warm face against his cold butt and go back just to be loathed? Obviously, you guys are the ones who took him out to drink. What does it have to do with me?!”
“You!” Xu Haoran suddenly took a step forward. Ignoring the fact that she was a girl, he grabbed Zhao Jiaojiao by the collar and lifted her up.
Tang Linsheng felt like his head was about to explode from their bickering. Although the two had learned their lesson and weren’t shouting loudly, they were arguing right above him, and all the noise was darting straight into his brain. He finally managed to focus and finish the admission nursing records. He looked up, only to see they were about to start a physical fight?
He wedged the medical chart folder against Xu Haoran’s arm, glanced at them both, and said, “Ma Laixi is still in the ICU. Could you please sit in the back and wait peacefully?” He pointed to the row of chairs behind the nurse’s station. “We have other patients to attend to here. The doctor will come over to tell you the specific situation later.”
Xu Haoran and Zhao Jiaojiao looked at each other with mutual disgust, gave a “hmpf,” and sat on opposite ends of the chairs in the back.
Tang Linsheng waited for the night shift teacher to return from her ward rounds. After handing over the work to her, he prepared to go to the pantry to heat up his meal. The last patient under his hand, Ma Laixi, had been sent to the CCU. With the ICU teachers watching over him, hopefully, he could pull through. Tang Linsheng sighed, thinking to himself with a weary air: Young people nowadays, staying up so late, drinking like crazy and chugging from the bottle, not treating their bodies like bodies at all.
He felt that if he didn’t eat right now, he would lose his sense of being human!
His stomach was growling loudly. After a moment’s thought, he took out both lunch boxes, preparing to put them in the microwave to heat.
He felt so hungry he could eat a whole cow!
While the food was heating, he heard more noise in the hallway outside. “Is Ma Laixi okay?” “Have the brothers from the ER recovered yet?” “…I’ll never drink that crazily again…” “Are your brains full of holes? A bunch of guys and girls drinking together, what were you trying to do? Are you brave enough to lead our Laixi astray?!” “…It has nothing to do with me, it was all him…”
He poked his head out and gave the group of men an expressionless look, successfully silencing them before turning back to the microwave. He raised his eyebrows. If the tiger doesn’t show its strength, do you take me for a sick cat?! He had already reminded them earlier, and now they were still being noisy!
He took out one lunch box and put the other one in to spin, then sat down at the table, opened the box, and began to eat.
After the first mouthful of food hit his stomach, he sighed with satisfaction: “Finally, I’ve found the feeling of being human!”
