- Chapter 39 - She Can't Just Say No, Right?
The dense steam permeated the air, blurring the face in the mirror. One could vaguely see a pair of silver-gray eyes narrowing slightly, looking quite displeased.
The person in the mirror remained expressionless, slender fingers smearing ointment across an ethereal, stunning face where several light brown scars lay scattered across the fair, smooth skin.
The white ointment felt cool as it covered the scars. The fingertips gently spread the medicine, carefully coating every light brown mark.
Shen Huaixu’s eyes were hollow, her fingers operating mechanically on her face.
It had been two months and eight days.
Not eight days, not eighteen days—but sixty-nine days.
What did that mean?
It was exactly one thousand six hundred and fifty hours, or two thousand hours if you rounded up. During these two thousand hours, the most she had done with her Huai was hold hands and share a few light pecks.
Even the distance of a hug was obstructed by an arm blocked against her chest; she couldn’t advance even half a step further.
What was even more ridiculous was that whenever Shen Huaixu exerted a bit more force and tightened her arms, her Huai’s finger would poke her forehead in the next second, accompanied by a fierce warning.
“Violation of the rules. Deduction of one hug.”
Yes, there was an upper limit to the number of daily hugs.
They could only hug three times a day. Each time could not exceed ten minutes, and she couldn’t use too much strength because it would be bad for her fractured bones.
Nightlife was gone, and even intimacy was restricted.
This was essentially locking a famished, vicious dog in a room with delicious meat, only to order the dog not to eat, force it to wear a muzzle, and make it stare greedily at the fragrant meat right by its mouth.
It was pure, unadulterated torture.
She wanted to protest.
Shen Huaixu irritably snapped the lid back onto the ointment jar. Biting her thumb nail, she knit her brows in deep thought.
Her injuries weren’t particularly severe, but she wasn’t suited for strenuous exercise and needed bed rest.
In Shen Huaixu’s opinion, a bone fracture wasn’t nearly as serious as the injuries on her face. This face was her “meal ticket”—if she were truly disfigured, she’d have no choice but to live off her Huai’s “soft rice.”
But Gu Yinghuai didn’t see it that way.
She believed a patient should obediently follow the doctor’s orders. If the doctor said rest, the patient must rest at home and not do anything “extra.”
Naturally, “extra things” referred to the nightly scheduled program from before Shen Huaixu was injured—LOVE LOVE (heart).
The premise of LOVE was mutual consent. Although they occasionally played with a bit of excitement—like “wallpaper play” and such—that was a matter of mutual romantic interest.
Now, Gu Yinghuai was clearly unwilling to take intimacy any further out of concern for Shen Huaixu’s physical condition, stopping at the bare minimum every day.
How perfunctory!
What was the difference between this and punching a clock at work? None!
Wait, that’s not right.
Shen Huaixu’s eyes suddenly widened, her silver-gray pupils shaking.
Could it be that her Huai was starting to dislike her? Or perhaps she was getting tired of her?
At the thought of this possibility, the expression of the person in the mirror fractured on the spot. Her hair, which she hadn’t had time to blow-dry yet, happened to droop in front of her eyes as if mocking her.
No.
This sort of thing absolutely cannot happen.
Shen Huaixu turned on the hair dryer, directing it at her damp hair while she contemplated her strategy.
Once her wet hair was dry, it seemed Shen Huaixu had thought of something. Her eyes darted around, and she laughed like a cunning little fox.
She thought: Her Huai can’t just say no, right?
“I thought you were going to sleep in the bathroom tonight.” Just as the bathroom door opened and the white mist drifted out, the person sitting at the head of the bed reading a book looked up and teased Shen Huaixu.
Shen Huaixu turned off the bathroom light.
The warm yellow light of the bedroom cast over Gu Yinghuai. Her fair skin seemed to lose its boundaries in the glow, melting like cream.
I really want to take a lick.
Shen Huaixu subconsciously licked her own lips, imagining the taste of cream.
It must be very sweet, she thought.
The light and shadow drew a definitive boundary across Shen Huaixu’s face, making it impossible to see her expression.
Gu Yinghuai didn’t receive a response. Years of living together meant she felt no sense of vigilance toward Shen Huaixu at all.
She tilted her head, her expression puzzled, not understanding what was wrong with Shen Huaixu.
Shen Huaixu remained silent.
Gu Yinghuai, being somewhat naive, didn’t sense the impending danger. Instead, she grew concerned about Shen Huaixu. “Are you feeling unwell?”
In the past, Shen Huaixu would have laughed improperly by now, using her glib tongue to defend herself.
But now…?
Before Gu Yinghuai could react, the silent Shen Huaixu had already walked to the head of the bed.
To Gu Yinghuai’s surprise and confusion, she knelt down.
Gu Yinghuai: “?”
In the next second, a delicate and soft sensation came from her fingertips.
Shen Huaixu buried her face in Gu Yinghuai’s palm and rubbed it gently.
“Is Axu acting spoiled?” Asking what she already knew—it was incredibly cute.
This time, Shen Huaixu still didn’t speak.
She lifted her eyes, her mist-filled silver-gray gaze meeting Gu Yinghuai’s. All the answers were hidden within those deep eyes.
She wanted her.
Bluntly and passionately.
Even someone as slow as Gu Yinghuai couldn’t help but feel scorched by the boiling love in Shen Huaixu’s eyes. She curled her fingers, wanting to withdraw the hand that Shen Huaixu was holding.
But the larger hand remained motionless.
Shen Huaixu firmly grasped Gu Yinghuai’s wrist. She felt the slight struggle beneath her palm, and the grievances of many days erupted at this moment.
Crystal teardrops fell unexpectedly from the corners of her eyes, splashing onto the back of Gu Yinghuai’s hand. The warm tears were hotter than lava.
“Don’t… don’t cry. What’s wrong? Did someone bully you?” Shen Huaixu’s tears were far too deceptive. Gu Yinghuai’s heart panicked instantly. She hurried to lift her hand to catch the falling tears, but the moment she moved, Shen Huaixu held her even tighter.
“Don’t move,” Shen Huaixu said in a hoarse voice.
At some point, she had stood up from the floor. Her long legs straddled Gu Yinghuai, looking down from above. Because of this posture, her tears almost fell onto Gu Yinghuai’s chest, creating a large damp patch.
“I won’t move. I just want to help Axu wipe her tears.” As if to prove her words, Gu Yinghuai raised her other unheld hand and gently wiped away the tears on Shen Huaixu’s cheek. “Why are you crying so pitifully?”
Hearing this, Shen Huaixu’s gaze became resentful. “It’s all Huai’s fault.”
Gu Yinghuai was a little surprised, not understanding what she had done wrong. However, seeing her Axu looking so pathetic while crying, she ultimately couldn’t bear to refute her. She only asked, “Then Axu, tell me what I did wrong, okay?”
Meanwhile, the hand that had originally been held slowly moved to Shen Huaixu’s soft earlobe, rubbing it gently.
This was the method Gu Yinghuai always used to soothe Shen Huaixu’s emotions.
The soft, slightly cool earlobe grew warm and red under the kneading and rubbing of Gu Yinghuai’s warm fingertips.
“Huai still has the nerve to ask me.” Shen Huaixu was extremely resentful. She pulled the book that hadn’t been put back on the nightstand out of Gu Yinghuai’s arms and tossed it aside. “Hmph, think about it yourself. How have you been treating me lately?”
Gu Yinghuai actually thought about it carefully but still couldn’t find the problem. She spoke cautiously: “That bottle of chili sauce that went missing from the kitchen was hidden by me…”
The person straddling her had an unpredictable expression and didn’t speak.
Oh, it seemed it wasn’t because of that.
Gu Yinghuai observed Shen Huaixu’s expression and spoke again: “The snacks you hid in the cloakroom disappeared because I moved them to another hiding spot…”
“Also, actually, the doctor said you could go out for more walks and get some sun during this time…”
The further she spoke, the weaker and more guilty her voice became.
“Are you finished?” Shen Huaixu released her grip on Gu Yinghuai’s wrist and braced her hands on the headboard, pinning Gu Yinghuai beneath her.
Gu Yinghuai wasn’t quite sure herself. “There shouldn’t be anything else…?”
Seeing Shen Huaixu’s eyes narrow as if she didn’t believe her, Gu Yinghuai said hurriedly: “There really isn’t! I’m not lying to you, there’s really nothing else I’m hiding from you.”
“Good. Huai is finished, now it’s my turn.” Shen Huaixu tilted Gu Yinghuai’s chin up. “None of what Huai said is right.”
Gu Yinghuai: “Huh?”
Shen Huaixu leaned down close to Gu Yinghuai, her cool nose grazing her, acting as both a gesture of goodwill and a sort of inquiry.
Their lips were very close—so close that if Gu Yinghuai just slightly pursed her lips, they would touch Shen Huaixu’s.
“No sticking out the tongue when kissing, no hugging too tightly, and the most important and unforgivable point: refusing to make love with me.” Shen Huaixu listed Gu Yinghuai’s “crimes” in one breath.
If Gu Yinghuai could still listen to the first two, she grew flustered and embarrassed at the third point, hurriedly covering Shen Huaixu’s mouth. “Don’t say it anymore…”
“I insist on saying it.” Shen Huaixu bit Gu Yinghuai’s lip fiercely, her eyes full of grievance.
What gives? The ambiguous atmosphere I worked so hard to create was shattered by those few sentences from Huai.
Chili sauce and snacks? Is that the point?!
Isn’t the point that when your lover cries, you should kiss them to comfort them?! It’s really infuriating.
Perhaps because the bite was a bit hard, Gu Yinghuai frowned and let out a soft gasp.
Although the sound was faint, Shen Huaixu heard it. She released her teeth and gently licked the place she had just bitten.
Forget it, her lover wasn’t being slow for the first time.
Before she could be rejected by Gu Yinghuai, Shen Huaixu deepened the kiss.
Her upper body pressed entirely against Gu Yinghuai’s. The hands that were originally braced on either side had unknowingly cupped Gu Yinghuai’s face, forcing her to tilt her chin up and endure the kiss.
Her lover’s lips were softer than the clouds in the sky. Shen Huaixu bit them twice, then, fearing the soft clouds might dissolve, changed from biting to licking, gently touching Gu Yinghuai’s burning lips.
Touch, separate. Touch, separate again.
It was clearly just a simple kiss, yet a long-lost shiver traveled all the way up her spine.
Half of Gu Yinghuai’s reason was screaming to push Shen Huaixu away. Her lover’s injuries hadn’t fully healed, and overly intense exercise would inevitably affect her recovery.
The other half of her reason melted in the kiss. The arm that had been held between them rested limply against Shen Huaixu’s chest; she couldn’t push her away, and instead, it seemed like a form of “playing hard to get,” adding a different flavor to the moment.
“Don’t, your injury—” Before she could finish, Shen Huaixu had already blocked Gu Yinghuai’s lips with her own, not letting her speak the second half of the rejection.
However, Gu Yinghuai didn’t give up there.
Her remaining reason warned her that she shouldn’t let Shen Huaixu continue; she should stop her.
Yet whenever Gu Yinghuai opened her mouth to speak, the person on top would block her mouth and swallow her refusal.
After several rejections, Shen Huaixu would act pitifully, whimpering like a puppy as her rough tongue licked Gu Yinghuai’s chin, staring with watery eyes.
Don’t reject me.
Don’t leave me behind.
Please love me.
The rest of Gu Yinghuai’s reason melted away.
The rejecting arm quietly wrapped around Shen Huaixu’s back, pulling the distance between them closer.
She kissed the corner of Shen Huaixu’s mouth and said with a blushing face, “Just this once.”
And so, the kisses fell like rain.
The nightgown on her body fell to the floor, and the bed creaked gently throughout the night.
