Fell In Love With My Older Sister’s Friend - Chapter 72
“Xu Luwei!” Yi Liang was so angry her eyes were filled with tears, she wished she could bite her.
What she hated most about Xu Luwei was that calm demeanor, as if admitting fault would make everything go away.
What was the difference between that and being a heartbreaker?
“Sister, I know what you’re thinking,” Yi Liang said word by word, looking directly at Xu Luwei, her chest puffed out. “You don’t dare come out, and you won’t even admit I’m your girlfriend in private, because you think we’re not suitable.”
There’s a classic saying online: there aren’t that many personality clashes it’s just not loving each other enough.
If their personalities truly didn’t match, why did they get together in the first place?
Perhaps she was too persistent, always naively wanting a definite outcome, but she was only eighteen after all, no match for the genius girl Xu Luzhi. All she had was her own burning passion.
Xu Luwei had everything Yi Liang’s stunning looks, sharp mind which in her eyes, was merely optional.
Only her youthful body could make Xu Luwei completely collapse in a matter of minutes.
Yi Liang was clear about the gap between them. Xu Luwei worked in an office on the highest floor of Weicheng’s prime CBD, independent and spacious, while she was a street vendor, albeit in the best spot right below the CBD.
She never felt inferior because of her poverty. She could feed and clothe herself through her own labor, and even have spare money for little novelties for Xu Luwei. She was proud of that.
It was just that relationships between women were difficult to begin with, let alone when the partner was Xu Luwei, famous even in Weicheng.
The young mistress of the powerful Xu family in Lincheng this title meant she had to live a proper, restrained life, far less free than her sister, Xu Luzhi.
Her relationship was naturally a target for public scrutiny. People wouldn’t accept her being with another girl, let alone one who was just an ordinary university student running a street stall.
Xu Luwei thought she didn’t understand these things, but Yi Liang had navigated tough situations for years, even dealing with difficult hooligans. How could she not see the hidden dangers?
But was her sister’s current behavior protecting her, hurting her heart, or simply showing she was unwilling from the start?
Yi Liang let out a somewhat sarcastic laugh: “It’s fine, I don’t ask for more.”
She had spent a lot of money on an overnight red eye flight to travel thousands of miles to this small island nation. Unable to afford expensive accommodation, she could only stay in cheap hostels, dancing on the beach, delivering takeout for hotels trying in various ways to earn money.
All just to see Xu Luwei one more time, to clarify things in person, to see how much affection she truly held for her.
Yi Liang was ultimately disappointed. Even though she was seven years older, Xu Luwei didn’t seem any freer than her, as if she were born bound, not even daring to show too much longing.
She shook her head, held her chin up calmly, not losing an ounce of pride: “I don’t want anything. I don’t regret coming here. Just these few days. When the time is up, we won’t know each other anymore.”
Yi Liang’s voice cracked, but she wasn’t heartbroken. Perhaps being clear-headed about the world had taught her that people like Xu Luwei didn’t have a heart.
The sea breeze gently blew on her, her dark hair scattered, like the trailing feathers of a phoenix beautiful and majestic.
She looked steadily at Xu Luwei and smiled just as lightly: “Stop buying small toys. Wait for me tonight.”
With that, she turned around without hesitation, holding her head high all the way. This time there was no tinkling sound, but she added it automatically in her mind.
After walking a few steps, Yi Liang finally couldn’t help but look back, using the back of her hand to cover her eyes to prevent the tears from flowing down.
Xu Luwei was long gone, and her expression when she heard those words was as calm as ever, as if nothing could stir her emotions.
Yi Liang didn’t care about her agreement. If there was no future, she would indulge herself for a few more nights.
Consider it a beautiful dream: amidst heavy snow, dusk descends, the beauty has long turned white-haired, and she is left waiting desperately in the same spot.
Out of concern for her cheap apprentice, and also the desire to see a good show, Lin Qingyue decided to go check on Yi Liang.
Xu Luzhi followed closely, unwilling to let Lin Qingyue walk alone.
Before seeing Yi Liang, they first saw Xu Luwei entering a restaurant for breakfast, her expression as indifferent as always, as if nothing had happened.
But as she moved, Lin Qingyue keenly heard the faint, delicate sound of small bells from inside her handbag.
She was momentarily lost in thought, so much so that it was only when Xu Luwei reached her that she curved her lips into a greeting: “Good morning, Weiwei.”
Xu Luwei wasn’t surprised to see Xu Luzhi next to Lin Qingyue, merely offering a faint smile: “Morning. Are you two going out?”
Lin Qingyue smiled lazily, her peach blossom eyes curving into crescents: “Mm, going to see how Yi Liang is doing.”
She said it openly, which made Xu Luwei hesitate for a moment, as if feeling guilty, before finally saying: “Mm.”
After speaking, Xu Luwei gave Xu Luzhi a deep look, communicating with Lin Qingyue with her eyes, confirming that Xu Luzhi knew everything.
She didn’t have to say anything, but in the end, she gently shook her head, took the silver bracelet out of her bag, and handed it to Lin Qingyue: “Give it back to her. It’s all my fault.”
Lin Qingyue stepped back and laughed softly: “I’m not doing it. If you want to return it, you go do it yourself.”
She didn’t have much affection for her cheap apprentice initially, but now that the bell Yi Liang treasured was in Xu Luwei’s hand, she guessed the breakup was pretty much settled.
Although Lin Qingyue was inherently cold-hearted and hadn’t thought highly of Yi Liang at first, having witnessed their interactions firsthand, she still felt a bit sorry for Yi Liang: “Just like that, it’s over?”
She was referring to the bracelet, and also the relationship between the two people.
Xu Luwei gave a faint smile: “Personality clash.”
Four light words that could justify every relationship under the sun, leaving one too weary to even argue.
Lin Qingyue snorted, showing no deference to Xu Luwei: “She’s my apprentice. What she did to you, she only told me you made her angry.”
Later, Lin Qingyue found out that Xu Luwei was the one who gave up on Yi Liang first.
When Lin Qingyue said this, she covered Xu Luzhi’s ears, not wanting the child to hear such words or make any decisions based on them. Adults should know the limits. Xu Luwei naturally understood the implied meaning but just calmly shook her head: “It was my fault.”
She motioned for Lin Qingyue to uncover Xu Luzhi’s ears, then leaned down and looked gently at Xu Luzhi: “Zhizhi, bring this to her when you see her, okay?”
Xu Luzhi subconsciously took it, then heard her usually composed and steady older sister smile and say: “Mm, it’s that I can’t give her what she wants.”
Xu Luzhi nodded blankly. Lin Qingyue, however, said lightly: “Can’t give, or don’t want to give?”
Xu Luwei only maintained that distant demeanor: “There’s no such thing as ‘want to or not want to.'”
The adult world wasn’t about wishing. She had thought about it, but so what?
It wasn’t that she hadn’t considered being reckless and fighting for it, but ultimately, reality weighed heavier.
Xu Luwei looked down at Xu Luzhi, the young girl quietly holding the bracelet, eyes downcast, asking no improper questions so much more sensible than Yi Liang.
She felt a bit envious of her sister, who could fearlessly approach the woman she liked, who could choose freely, while she couldn’t.
The older one got, the heavier the responsibilities became.
“Go on,” Xu Luwei gently patted Xu Luzhi’s head and whispered, “Don’t quarrel.”
Xu Luzhi obediently nodded, tugged at Lin Qingyue’s clothes with pleading eyes: “Sister…”
Looking at the girl’s clear, watery eyes, Lin Qingyue knew she was siding with her own older sister, but she couldn’t help it. She strode out with Xu Luzhi.
Not far from the restaurant entrance was the beach. Xu Luzhi took a deep breath of the sea air, her head feeling a bit dizzy and fuzzy.
She had never imagined Xu Luwei’s love life, nor had she thought Xu Luwei was actually this kind of person.
Drawn in, so she couldn’t control it based on reality, so she ended it decisively.
Nothing seemed wrong even, it was a mutual decision between two adults; it couldn’t be called deception.
It just… seemed unfair to Yi Liang.
Recalling her own sarcastic words to Yi Liang in the early morning, Xu Luzhi suddenly felt a pang of guilt, as if she had done something wrong.
She whispered quietly: “Sister, I think I was a little mean…”
Without understanding the full context, she only thought of protecting her sister, which in turn made Yi Liang sad and hurt.
Lin Qingyue shook her head and gently patted her fluffy head: “The ending is the same.”
What kind of person Xu Luwei was no one could change her mind. If she was resolute, she would remain resolute.
It was just Yi Liang who suffered, always believing that sincerity could move mountains, when in reality, it couldn’t.
In this world, there were many things stronger than affection, like money.
“Sister said not to judge people by their family background or status,” Xu Luzhi remembered something and said seriously. “Mom and Dad taught us that too.”
Lin Qingyue chuckled: “Silly girl, that’s because the people you meet are generally at your own level.”
They went in taxis daily, visited luxury malls, stayed in five star hotels, or ate at famous hole-in-the-wall places. They never encountered truly remote or impoverished areas.
Xu Luzhi thought about it, then shook her head stubbornly: “That’s not it.”
“Besides, friends are friends, girlfriends are different,” Lin Qingyue murmured. “Girlfriends are special.”
This time, Xu Luzhi fell silent. She pondered for a long time, then looked up at the pendant around Lin Qingyue’s neck.
The light green gem sparkled brilliantly in the sun, the vivid gardenia flower looking exquisite on her.
Xu Luzhi asked cautiously: “Then, Sister, are you rich?”
Without waiting for Lin Qingyue’s answer, she said firmly: “It doesn’t matter even if you’re not rich.”
Xu Luwei always overcomplicated things. It was so hard to say a simple “I like you” that the ones who loved each other ended up moving further apart.
Zhizhi wouldn’t be like that. Zhizhi would find a way to keep her sister by her side and give her everything openly.
She wanted everything.
Lin Qingyue felt a warmth in her heart and couldn’t help but gently hold the girl’s soft little hand: “I have a little bit.”
She added: “But I can’t touch it; I have important things to do.”
Lin Qingyue winked mysteriously, a trace of melancholy flashing in her eyes, which Xu Luzhi noticed but pretended not to see.
She smiled sweetly, her round eyes curving into crescents: “Then I’m relieved.”
Xu Luzhi snuggled closer, smiling softly: “I’ll rely on you to support me from now on.”
