Chapter 68: The Puppy – You can give the puppy an English name starting with L…
The plan to visit Qi Yang’s kennel with Zhou Zihua was delayed by a dinner arranged by Xu Wei.
Moreover, Lu Feiran was busy with work and truly couldn’t spare the time to personally visit the kennel in the northern suburbs to choose a puppy.
So, Qi Yang asked Zhou Zihua to relay a message to Lu Feiran: he and his assistant would bring the puppies to Lu Feiran’s house on Friday evening for him to choose.
Lu Feiran agreed. He deliberately left work on time on Friday and waited at home for Qi Yang and the puppies to arrive.
At 6:30 PM, Lu Feiran, sitting in the living room, saw a large RV slowly pull up to his gate. The bright headlights shone from outside the gate, illuminating the gravel path in a sheet of white.
Lu Feiran quickly used the remote to open the gate and went out to greet them.
As the assistant parked the car, the RV door opened. Qi Yang, wearing a black windbreaker and smiling broadly, stepped out and shook hands with Lu Feiran.
Qi Yang: “Old classmate, Huazi said you wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog. You can trust me to handle the dog selection.”
Lu Feiran thanked him and politely apologized first: “I was supposed to go pick one out, but I got delayed. Thank you for making the trip.”
“No problem at all. Delivering dogs for clients to choose from is one of our services. It’s no trouble. See this RV? It’s specially customized for transporting puppies. The dogs are comfortable inside, not stressed at all.”
Qi Yang was generous and upfront about his business approach. Standing on the RV steps, he asked: “Would you like to come in and take a look? It’s bright inside. You can check their physical appearance first. In a bit, I’ll take them down to move around, and you can observe their personalities.”
Lu Feiran followed Qi Yang into the car. At the same moment, in a high-end apartment twenty kilometers away, a paintbrush was snapped in half.
The brush, stained with red paint, fell to the floor, leaving a stark mark like spilled blood.
Lance burst into laughter, tears welling up in his eyes.
What was he doing? Was his supposed patient waiting only for him to play the fool?
That man, he could recognize him even if he were reduced to ashes. He had danced with Lu Feiran in a bar’s dance floor, and Lu Feiran’s left arm was still in a cast at the time.
Dancing with that man even with a cast.
Lance had been furious then, carrying him away, wishing he could press Lu Feiran across his lap and spank him in the street so he would never dare to do it again.
Later, Lance knew Lu Feiran did it deliberately to provoke and retaliate against him. Fine, he could temporarily ignore that man.
But that didn’t mean he could remain unperturbed while watching the two of them “renew their former relationship”!
Lance stood up, gripping the broken brush handle. His muscles were taut. He stared intently at the quiet RV on the screen. His emerald eyes made him look like a beast on the verge of losing control.
Time became agonizingly slow in his perception. He dared not think about how long Lu Feiran had been inside. It seemed like more than ten minutes.
What the hell was in that car?!
Lance’s entire chest felt like an active volcano, filled with rumbling, ready to erupt and scorch the whole world barren.
The apartment was twenty kilometers away from Lu Yuanyuan as the crow flies, and over thirty kilometers by road. Friday nights were particularly congested. Unless a helicopter was called in right now, Lance couldn’t possibly rush over.
He watched the screen, self-torturingly. His chest heaved repeatedly. His proudly self-controlled calm always vanished without a trace when it came to Lu Feiran.
Lance picked up his phone and realized even his hands were trembling.
If there were a mirror, he would see how wretched and comical his expression was, like a discarded dog.
He began dialing Lu Feiran’s number relentlessly. The rhythmic beeping gradually turned into a busy signal. An electronic voice informed him that the number he had dialed was currently busy.
Unanswered.
The feeling of falling into an abyss was no worse than this. Lance’s vision blurred white, as if snow-like blades were falling into his eyes.
A few minutes later, Lu Feiran, holding three Bernese Mountain puppies, followed Qi Yang out of the RV.
Lance swayed slightly, wiping away the dark, terrifying expression on his face. He grabbed his car keys and left the room.
The large screen was still showing the scene outside the Lu Yuanyuan gate. The screen light made the red paint on the floor look particularly vivid.
…
Qi Yang had Lu Feiran sit on the small sofa in the center of the RV and released the puppies one by one, giving a detailed introduction of their physical appearance on the central small display table.
From the thickness and curliness of the fur to the shape of the face, body length, and the arch of the tail, he gave Lu Feiran a comprehensive explanation.
His professionalism impressed Lu Feiran, but the technical jargon left him completely confused. He only understood that these three were top-quality dogs in Qi Yang’s possession, not usually sold easily.
Lu Feiran looked a bit lost. It took a long time after Qi Yang finished speaking for him to belatedly nod: “Okay, what’s the next step?”
Qi Yang put leashes on the puppies and handed them to Lu Feiran: “Take them down. The next step is to see which one you have a connection with.”
The puppies were lively. As soon as they were placed on the ground, they circled Lu Feiran’s feet, their soft, wet noses rubbing against his trousers. Six pairs of watery eyes gazed up at him.
Lu Feiran’s heart was melting. Listening to Qi Yang’s suggestions, he followed the standard dog selection process. All three puppies showed amazing qualities.
Unable to choose, Lu Feiran decided to pick one randomly.
Qi Yang retrieved some freeze-dried treats from the car and gave them to him, saying: “Give them some food and then look again.”
Lu Feiran crouched down, holding the treats. The puppies eagerly stood up, their large front paws trying to rest on his knees.
But his knee area was limited, and the puppies’ paws were too big. Six paws couldn’t possibly fit simultaneously. One let out a small whine first, and the three puppies started pushing each other, vying to nudge against Lu Feiran.
Qi Yang supported Lu Feiran’s back, preventing him from being knocked over.
“Thanks.” Lu Feiran steadied himself by putting a hand on the ground. After adjusting his crouching posture, he pondered for a moment.
Suddenly, he made a throwing motion. The puppies thought he had tossed the treats far away and ran off to search for them.
Only one, after running out two steps and briefly losing focus, wagged its tail and crawled back onto Lu Feiran’s knees, nudging his palm for the treats.
“So clever, baby.” Lu Feiran picked up the puppy and rubbed the back of its neck. “I’ll take this one.”
“Alright. I can give you three days to bond. If you feel it’s not the right fit, I’ll come back to pick it up,” Qi Yang said with a smile.
Lu Feiran shook his head: “No need. This is the one. Should I transfer the money to you?”
Lu Feiran, holding the dog with one hand, felt for his phone in his pocket and realized he hadn’t brought it outside. He handed the dog to Qi Yang, asked him to wait, and went back inside the living room for his phone.
The screen lit up, and dozens of missed calls popped up like springs, nearly blinding Lu Feiran.
What was going on? Was he being scammed?
Checking the call history, they were all from the same number, which wasn’t saved but had a very familiar last few digits.
Lu Feiran froze, confirming the current date and time. It wasn’t any special occasion. Why would he call so many times? Had something happened?
He felt anxious, pacing around the coffee table. Should he call back?
He glanced out the French window. Qi Yang was back in the RV with the puppy. He withdrew his gaze, letting it rest on the phone, which was warm from the constant calling.
He pinched his nose and called back.
The phone rang for about five seconds before it was answered. It was silent on the other end, and Lu Feiran didn’t speak first either.
He felt inexplicably nervous. His Adam’s apple bobbed twice, and his heart pounded fiercely. Unable to stand it, he asked first: “What’s wrong?”
A faint sound came through the phone. Lu Feiran frowned, unable to discern what it was.
“Speak! Lance?” Lu Feiran raised his voice, demanding an answer succinctly.
He heard Lance let out a soft chuckle: “Ranran, I’ve been out of commission for days. When can we see each other again?”
“…” Lu Feiran was speechless and immediately hung up.
A lunatic. Calling dozens of times for no reason, making people worry needlessly. My phone is going to break.
Wait… worry?
Lu Feiran shook his head, casting out the inappropriate thought, and quickly walked towards the RV.
“I’ll pay now. Let’s sign the contract.” Lu Feiran said, trying to find Qi Yang’s WeChat to transfer the money, but realized he hadn’t added Qi Yang as a friend, making the situation awkward.
A purchase contract was already prepared on the table. Qi Yang placed a pen to Lu Feiran’s right and said: “I tried to add you as a friend then, but you gently declined.”
Lu Feiran blinked uncomfortably and rubbed his hair: “Sorry about that. Let’s add each other now. I’ll scan your code.”
Qi Yang shook his head: “No need. Zhou Zihua said it’s your birthday gift and has already transferred the money to me. Happy birthday, Lu Feiran.”
“Thank you.”
“I didn’t even prepare a gift for your birthday. Now I feel awkward taking Zhou Zihua’s money.”
Lu Feiran smiled: “You’re running a business. Why be awkward? If you don’t accept it, I’d be the awkward one, and then you’d have to take my money.”
Lu Feiran’s courtesy and detachment were unique. His tone was laced with a hint of tenderness but carried an undeniable coolness. He could make people feel very comfortable, yet also make them feel awkward about continuing a personal topic.
He had been like this since high school, Qi Yang thought. This hadn’t changed. Many people who tried to get close had failed.
Qi Yang himself had tried once, but the outcome was predictable: Lu Feiran barely remembered his name. Today was truly the second time they had properly met.
He pushed the contract forward, urging Lu Feiran to sign: “No worries, Huazi paid me. You just sign the contract. After taking the puppy home, you need to set rules and train it. I’ll send you a tutorial later; just follow it. Bernese Mountain Dogs are very smart and easy to teach. By the way, have you chosen a name for the puppy? Many new dog parents choose a name before picking up the dog.”
Lu Feiran’s hand, holding the pen, paused. He hadn’t chosen a name. He needed to think carefully; it couldn’t be arbitrary.
With that thought, he wrote a capital letter “L” on the line for the dog’s name, as a temporary placeholder.
“Little L? Is that your last name? You could give him an English name starting with L,” Qi Yang suggested.
Lu Feiran visibly stiffened. The pen spun in his hand before he refocused on filling out the contract details.
His profile was serene, radiating a soft glow. The puppy was wandering around the RV floor, the pattering sound of its paws keeping a smile on his face.
“How is your boyfriend? The blonde one.”
Qi Yang was slightly lost in thought. After asking, he realized he had asked an impolite question. Lu Feiran looked up at him, making him instantly nervous.
Lu Feiran continued to sign the document, then asked casually: “Why?”
Qi Yang laughed awkwardly: “Nothing, I just saw you two arguing last time. It looked quite unpleasant. Were you quarreling with him and went to the bar deliberately? Well, you don’t look like someone who goes to bars often.”
“…No. I used to go to bars often. I stopped after I got married.” Lu Feiran handed the signed contract to Qi Yang. Seeing his look of utter astonishment, he gave a kind smile.
“Mar-Married…” Qi Yang was stunned. Married so young? Well, his partner looked extremely outstanding.
“Thank you, Qi Yang,” Lu Feiran interrupted Qi Yang’s thoughts. “I’m very sorry you had to come all this way so late. The puppy is excellent, and I’m very satisfied. If your kennel has any financial issues, you can contact me. I love small animals.”
Qi Yang’s smile was a bit unnatural. Yes, Lu Feiran is the son of the Lu family, a favored child of heaven. Where would I get a chance? Besides, he’s married. In that case, let’s just be friends.
“It’s fine. Our business is running smoothly.” Qi Yang changed the subject. “It’s your first time owning a pet. Have you prepared all the essential supplies?”
Seeing Lu Feiran shake his head, Qi Yang said: “In that case, since we’re old classmates and I’m already here, I brought a lot of pet supplies. Let me gift you a set.”
Lu Feiran opened his mouth: “That’s too kind!”
“Don’t refuse. The things I have here aren’t low-quality items I’m trying to get rid of. They’re all good, big brands. Use them with confidence.”
With that said, Lu Feiran found it difficult to refuse.
He wasn’t obsessed with using expensive items; as long as they were good, it was fine. Since he wasn’t very familiar with pet supplies, having Qi Yang prepare everything saved him from awkwardness tonight.
“Alright,” Lu Feiran accepted, stating sincerely, “Then let me treat you to a meal?”
A look of happiness flashed across Qi Yang’s face: “Sure, let’s see when you have time.”
…
Outside the gate of Lu Yuanyuan, a black SUV was parked silently beneath the navy-blue trees, idling, as quiet as a dark knight.
The driver’s window was rolled down, and a tiny crimson glow flashed briefly.
The spent cigarette butt was pinched out by the thumb and forefinger. The stinging pain lingered on his fingertips, but Lance didn’t care. He was focused solely on the screen of his phone.
Lu Feiran had gone back into the RV and talked with Qi Yang for a long time.
Twenty minutes later, Lu Feiran came down holding a dog. Qi Yang and his assistant helped carry many items into the house. They waved goodbye at the gate, and the RV finally left Lu Yuanyuan.
The RV’s red taillights reflected in Lance’s emerald eyes, momentarily resembling the pupils of a ferocious beast. Lance blinked, restraining the madness in his expression, calming down. His cold, rigid face showed no emotional fluctuations.
He sat quietly in the car, watching the gate of Lu Yuanyuan and the glowing living room window.
Time passed slowly. All the lights in the Lu Yuanyuan estate were extinguished, leaving only the two guiding lights at the gate.
Lance tidied his hair and collar, with the gravity of someone attending a high-society banquet. He opened the car door and slowly, methodically, walked towards Lu Yuanyuan.
