Chapter 52: The Ring – A Plain Band Appears on Lance’s Hand
On the sixth day after the breakup, Lu Feiran contacted Jian Xu and went to the hospital where Jian Xu worked for a follow-up visit for his arm.
The doctor suggested it was best to go to the original hospital for a check-up, but Lu Feiran absolutely refused to go to the previous one, so he scheduled the time to remove the cast at the new hospital.
After more than a month, the muscles in his left arm had atrophied slightly. It looked thinner than his right hand, was not very flexible, and lacked strength. It would require a period of rehabilitation to recover its original level.
Lu Feiran had originally set up an exercise plan and was progressing smoothly, but it had been unexpectedly paused.
Now, that was fine; he had plenty of time again and could resume exercising.
Oh, and the psychiatric diagnosis from three years ago was verified as a misdiagnosis, so he could reapply for a driver’s license.
Various matters once again filled Lu Feiran’s life. The absence of a person who once took up a huge proportion of his life seemed to have no impact on his daily routine.
Perhaps he was too busy to dwell on it, or perhaps he was intentionally avoiding the thought, but Lu Feiran seemed to have completely forgotten Lance’s existence.
One day, Jian Xu called him, saying the Winter Solstice was approaching and the Lu family was going to the Northern Suburb Cemetery for tomb sweeping, asking if he would join them.
It was a Lu family tradition to visit the Northern Suburb Cemetery before the Winter Solstice every year without fail. The entire extended family, including all branches of the Lu family, would attend.
And Lu Feiran’s mother, Ming Xiu, was interred there.
Suddenly reminded of this, Lu Feiran silently chastised himself for being unfilial. He should have brought his mother back immediately. How could he let his mother be buried with the Lu family?
“Yes, why wouldn’t I go! Second Aunt, just send me the time,” Lu Feiran quickly agreed.
The date for tomb sweeping clashed with the shareholder meeting, both scheduled for the morning of the 18th. However, the shareholder meeting was at 9:30 AM, so if he acted quickly, he could make it.
…
At 6:30 AM on a winter morning, the sky was just beginning to lighten. The dry, cold air struck Lu Feiran’s face, attempting to sneak through every possible gap to latch onto his warm body.
Lu Feiran was heavily bundled. Instead of an oversized coat, he wore a well-fitting, soft down jacket, wrapped in a black cashmere scarf that covered half his face, minimizing cold air intrusion.
He stood at the cemetery entrance, hands in his pockets, his black eyes deep and bright, carrying a look of deadly resolve as he watched the construction team slowly driving toward him in the distance.
The team leader driving the excavator was an honest-looking middle-aged man. Lu Feiran had paid a lot of money to persuade him, but facing the job about to start, the man felt a bit nervous.
He got off the excavator, his wrinkled face creased with worry. He held his hands together and tried several times to step forward and shake Lu Feiran’s hand but ultimately lowered his arms.
When they talked yesterday, he thought he would be dealing with some scoundrel or gangster, but seeing him in person, the employer was a refined young man, fair-skinned and handsome, looking like a teacher—clearly an intellectual.
But why would such a respectable person hire him to drive an excavator to dig up a grave?
This… this would incur divine wrath! If it weren’t for his daughter needing to go to college and his desire to provide a better life for her, he wouldn’t agree to this immoral act, no matter the money.
Lu Feiran anxiously checked the time and said sternly, “Master Zhang, we agreed clearly on the phone yesterday. You can’t back out now. Are you trying to raise the price?”
Master Zhang was startled. He wasn’t the type to raise prices: “No, no, I won’t overcharge. It’s just that this grave… it’s really not good to dig. And these are all wealthy families here. If I do this, I’m afraid people will come looking for me later…”
Lu Feiran didn’t have time to argue. He waved his hand and told Master Zhang to look at the name of the junior carved on the tombstone. He then showed him his ID card: “This is my name. Check it yourself. This is my mother. I’m just taking my mother away.”
“Then you can ask the cemetery staff to do it respectfully! Using an excavator is too disruptive to the peace!”
“My mother likes a lively ceremony. I want to tell her that I’ve come, and I want to make her happy.”
The area in front was all Lu family burial plots, but not everyone was buried together. They were interred in family units. For example, Lu Feiran’s grandparents and Lu Liye’s prematurely deceased siblings were buried together. Lu Liye, having established his own family, had a separate plot reserved with empty spaces.
Only Ming Xiu rested in this specific plot.
Ming Xiu’s position was slightly to the right, Lu Liye was in the center, and a space was reserved to the left, presumably for Lu Xingli’s mother.
Lu Feiran sneered. Disgusting piece of trash. Even in death, he wants to have his arm around two women!
He pointed his slender, pale finger at the empty spot and loudly instructed the excavator operator, Master Zhang: “Start here, dig up this burial plot, and dig a circle around my mother! Hurry up! If you don’t do it, plenty of others will. Doesn’t anyone else want to earn money? I’m in a hurry!”
Master Zhang hardened his resolve and got back into the excavator.
To ensure the “grave digging” proceeded smoothly, Lu Feiran had also bribed several security guards, but he knew there was no way to quietly complete the task right under the nose of the cemetery management.
The excavator tore up the smoothly paved bricks. Lu Feiran took out tools he had prepared long ago and personally opened his mother’s tomb. A delicate small box lay quietly inside, next to a small violin that had been corroded.
Lu Feiran picked up the box, placed it on his knee amidst the dust and noise, lowered his head, and pressed his cheek against the cool surface of the box. Tears flowed over his high nose bridge, down his fair face, and onto the box.
He gently stroked the four sides of the box, just like when he burrowed into his mother’s arms as a child. It wasn’t cold at all; it was warm.
“Lu Feiran, are you crazy?!”
A furious shout came from behind, followed by a sharp argument. Lu Liye’s family, along with the cemetery staff, had intercepted the construction team.
Lu Feiran put the severely corroded violin into the bag he was carrying. Cupping the urn with both hands, he slowly turned around.
He was expressionless, his head slightly raised, looking aloof. He looked past Lu Liye’s face, sequentially observing the stunned Lu Xingli and his mother, and a crowd of relatives who had come for the sweeping.
The group was dressed in crisp black suits, expensive cufflinks, brooches, tie clips, belts, and bags—nothing was missing. At first glance, they looked like they were attending a fashion show.
When the relatives arrived, they were shocked by the scene. Who dug up their Lu family’s old grave? Just as they were about to get angry, they looked closer and saw that only Lu Liye’s plot was devastated, and the person standing amidst the wreckage was Lu Feiran.
Every one of them shut up, quietly watching the spectacle.
They hadn’t forgotten what Lu Feiran had shown them on Lu Liye’s birthday last time.
“I’m taking my mother away. Is there a problem?” Lu Feiran was unfazed. He looked around at the messy scene, immediately settled the payment with Master Zhang’s team, gave them an extra hardship allowance, and told them to leave.
As soon as they got an apology, they ran faster than anyone. Lu Feiran slowly descended the damaged steps and walked straight toward Lu Liye: “My mother dreamt she wanted to go home, and I’m fulfilling her wish.”
Lu Liye had already taken his fast-acting heart medicine; otherwise, he would have been dead from anger.
He pointed at Lu Feiran, yelling at him for being an unfilial son.
Lu Feiran felt that Lu Liye had aged significantly in the time they’d been apart. He had divorced Zhai Qiance. Their only binding relationship was gone. After Zhai Qiance devoured the Lu family, what would be left for Lu Liye?
Lu Liye had become an impotent old man. A few years ago, he would still pretend to comfort him before immediately changing his face the next day to arrange for him to be sent to a psychiatric hospital.
Now, Lu Liye could do nothing but point his finger and curse him as an “unfilial son.”
“Why are you so agitated? Are we a harmonious family?” Lu Feiran said frankly, “The father, in order to bring his mistress and illegitimate child home, slandered his biological son as a child who had been swapped, and even sent him to a mental hospital. And the illegitimate brother? He liked his older brother’s husband and ran to their master bedroom to have sex, taking videos to show off.”
He glanced around, making sure everyone heard his words: “I’ve already shown you the photos before, so I won’t say more. Today, I’m here to invite my mother home. Please get out of my way.”
He didn’t look at Lu Liye, squeezing through the crowd. His slender body was wrapped in the black down jacket, looking like a fluffy ball. His mother was held close to his chest, and he walked steadily, one step at a time.
Walking down the hill, he softly spoke to his mother: “I’m divorced. My ex-husband wasn’t a good person. Later, I fell in love again, but now we’ve broken up. My ex-boyfriend wasn’t a good person either. I don’t plan on trying again. Both of us, mother and son, can’t seem to meet a single good person.”
His voice was light and faint, conveying sad words, but his tone held little sorrow, only a hint of the kind of petulance one would use when complaining to a mother.
Lu Xingli, who was supporting his father, watched Lu Feiran’s retreating figure, his heart filled with excitement.
That damned Lu Feiran! After the scene he caused at home last time, Father’s attitude towards him had changed. He seemed to subtly want Lu Feiran to come back.
What a joke!
Now it was good. Lu Feiran deserved to have no family bond. Just when his father’s view of him was changing, he went crazy again and completely fell out with the family.
Now, who else could his father hand the company over to but him? So what if it was an empty shell? He, Lu Xingli, was born to possess everything in the Lu family!
…
Outside the cemetery, a black car had been waiting for a long time. After Lu Feiran got in, it drove directly to the cemetery where his maternal grandmother was interred in the Western Suburbs.
After settling his mother, he arrived at Topway just after 9:00 AM. The shareholder meeting was scheduled for 9:30 AM.
Lu Feiran was sensitive to the cold. The morning temperature was low, and since he had to spend a long time outdoors, he couldn’t stand the cold air. He didn’t wear his suit jacket directly over the down jacket but wore a thick sweater underneath to ensure warmth.
This meant changing clothes at Topway would be rushed.
Ensuring there wasn’t a single wrinkle in his clothes, Lu Feiran tied his necktie while rushing toward the conference room.
However, his left hand was still not flexible enough. He was almost at the conference room door, but his tie wasn’t tied, and the hurried pace had messed up his hair. He looked quite frazzled.
“Eh?” Xing Chufei called out Lu Feiran’s name in surprise. She didn’t expect to see him again. She walked up, intending to say hello, but noticed Lu Feiran was in a hurry, struggling with a stubborn tie. “I can help you. I know how to tie one!”
Footsteps sounded from the opposite corridor. The secretary, Wen Hui, opened the door to the conference room. Lu Feiran sighed in relief, bowing slightly to ask for Xing Chufei’s help: “Please, I have an urgent matter today. It’s great to run into you.”
Xing Chufei smiled sweetly. Her fingers nimbly threaded the tie, and after tying it, she meticulously straightened Lu Feiran’s collar.
Inadvertently looking up, she saw an undeniable blonde man standing inside the conference room. He was looking over, deep and cold, enveloping her and Lu Feiran in his silent gaze.
Xing Chufei paused, thinking he was urging Lu Feiran. She pulled a comb from her pocket, quickly tidied Lu Feiran’s hair, and made a cheering gesture: “Go quickly!”
Lu Feiran smiled, thanked Xing Chufei again, and turned around. That subtle, unspoken gaze disappeared.
He entered late, leaving only a few scattered seats for him to take. Lu Feiran scanned the room, his eyes stopping at a seat near the head table.
He walked over, his steps pausing slightly halfway, and his eyes met the man seated opposite the empty chair.
Lance was wearing a white suit, sitting with a detached expression. When people greeted him, he offered a shallow, measured smile, responding appropriately but distantly.
His eyes flickered, noticing that Lu Feiran had removed the cast. His face was not only not haggard but looked vibrant and spirited. The rush had given a slight flush to his eyes and cheeks, making his complexion look excellent, enhancing his demeanor and beauty.
Lance’s gaze lowered, quickly glancing at Lu Feiran’s tie, then moving away. He made an inviting gesture with his hand. A silver, plain band ring on his ring finger was clearly visible: “Mr. Lu is a major shareholder. Please sit here.”
Lu Feiran saw his ring, and a wave of emotion he couldn’t control still appeared in his heart.
What kind of ring is that?
