Chapter 34: Collapse and Danger: Someone wants to kill him.
Looking back, Lu Xingli realized that he didn’t actually like Zhai Qiance all that much.
He lacked a father figure growing up, and his ideal type was a mature, stable older man. Zhai Qiance happened to fit his criteria. Coupled with the fact that Zhai Qiance was going to marry Lu Feiran, he became jealous and wanted to snatch away everything good that belonged to Lu Feiran.
If Zhai Qiance hadn’t been Lu Feiran’s husband, Lu Xingli probably wouldn’t have done so many crazy things, nor would he have fallen into his current predicament, where everyone treated him as a joke.
If Lu Feiran’s feelings for Zhai Qiance had disappeared so quickly, it would only make him look like an idiot. He was unwilling to accept this and had to ask for clarification.
“It has nothing to do with you.” Lu Feiran didn’t want to talk to Lu Xingli anymore and called a car on his phone.
Lu Xingli gave a bitter smile: “You don’t like Zhai Qiance? He’s going to marry Noen, and yet you can still be on such good terms with a DeWei?”
Lu Feiran paused and turned to look at him.
That was a strange thing to say. Noen had been right by his side all these days, so why would Lu Xingli say that even after seeing them?
Lu Feiran said, “Do you think I’m like you, recycling any trash? Since the divorce, I’ve had absolutely no relationship with him. Don’t ask me about his affairs again in the future. I’m busy.”
Lu Xingli sensed Lu Feiran’s joy over the divorce and realized something: “You deliberately gave me the chance to move into Egret Garden. You… you even installed cameras at home to film us… you made me lose face in front of everyone!”
“You intentionally provoked me, told me about Zhai Qiance’s impending marriage alliance. I hit Noen, which was exactly what you wanted.” He glanced at the emptied Egret Garden through the window: “But you haven’t won, Lu Feiran!”
Hit… who?
Noen had been with him all this time and wasn’t injured. Who did Lu Xingli hit?
Lu Feiran’s eyes widened, filled with confusion. A strange sense of dissonance crept into his mind, as if a thick, dark fog had enveloped everything.
Lu Feiran played along: “So what?”
“That bastard made me kneel and apologize to him… Why should I! I should have smashed his face even worse, knowing what I know now.” Lu Xingli spoke with reckless hostility.
But he also knew that he was only able to ambush Noen because the other party was completely unprepared at the time. If Noen had been ready, he would have been the one lying flat, likely unable to get up for three months.
A crack appeared in Lu Feiran’s heart. Noen’s face was injured, so who was the “Noen” he was living with?
Lu Feiran’s lips trembled: “Didn’t almost going to jail teach you a lesson? Lu Xingli, you have nothing to be arrogant about. We’re not the same. Who I’m with has nothing to do with you, and I don’t need to explain myself to you.”
Lu Xingli scoffed: “You’re clever. Zhai Qiance betrayed you, and you immediately turned to Noen’s uncle. Once Zhai Qiance gets married, won’t you become his aunt? Does Zhai Qiance know about this? Will he let you get away with it so smoothly?”
Uncle… Uncle?
A sharp pain shot through his eyes. He hadn’t blinked for a long time, and his pupils were dry.
Lu Feiran suddenly felt like he couldn’t understand human speech. What did that mean?
He stood there stunned, speechless, his eyes full of disbelief, looking at Lu Xingli as if he were telling a huge joke.
Lu Xingli thought Lu Feiran was scared; he was still afraid of Zhai Qiance. His days of staking out here were not in vain. Just seeing Lu Feiran’s defeated expression was worth it all.
Lu Xingli thought Lu Feiran hadn’t heard clearly and repeated it over and over with excitement. Divorcing right after getting married and now renovating a house with Noen’s uncle—who knows when they got together! Zhai Qiance was always hypocritical and would definitely take ruthless revenge!
It’s not Noen, it’s Noen’s uncle…
Lu Feiran didn’t understand. He thought Lu Xingli must have made a mistake.
“…What do I have to be pleased about? What’s there to be pleased about?” Lu Feiran’s voice was sharp and stern, bursting with an aura that warned people to keep their distance. “Lu Xingli, if you came here just to say these boring things, then get lost!”
“You! You just wait!” Lu Xingli didn’t know why Lu Feiran’s attitude had suddenly changed. “You deliberately provoked me, making me see Noen DeWei as a thorn in my side. Noen got hit, and you benefited from the fallout, getting your divorce smoothly. But do you think Zhai Qiance passively agreeing to the divorce is a good thing? He hates you!”
“I’m going to tell Zhai Qiance about this. He absolutely won’t allow you to get the upper hand on him again. And you won’t succeed with Lance DeWei either. He won’t allow himself to be used by you. Wait until both of them come after you, then you’ll be dead, Lu Feiran!”
Lu Feiran glared at Lu Xingli, like looking at a dog barking aimlessly.
A car stopped outside the gate, its headlights flashing twice. Lu Feiran left Lu Xingli and got into the car.
Sitting in the back seat, Lu Feiran clasped his hands, trembling uncontrollably.
Lu Feiran forced himself to remain still, but he knew in his heart that what Lu Xingli said was likely true. Yet, he didn’t want to think about it further. It meant he had once again fallen into a lie disguised as love.
Lance DeWei, Lance DeWei!
Lu Feiran went through every detail of his meeting with Lance and suddenly realized that the other person had never introduced himself by his name.
He said he could be called “DeWei,” but he never said he was “Noen.” Later, he had voluntarily started calling him “Noen.”
It was a misunderstanding intentionally led on.
Also, the identity of Zhai Qiance’s husband, which he had hidden from the beginning, Lance must have known about it long ago.
The DeWei Group’s due diligence team conducted a thorough investigation of the company and would certainly have obtained the shareholder registry. Even if Lance hadn’t looked at the registry, with the DeWei family’s capabilities, how could they not have found out about Zhai Qiance’s true marital status?
Zhou Zihua was right. How could they not have found out?
At the time, he kept making excuses for Lance, saying Lance was also in the dark. Now it seemed the only one in the dark was him!
Even if everything was a series of accidental misunderstandings, when he called the name “Noen,” Lance never denied it. How could that be explained?
Lu Feiran suddenly felt a chill down his spine. He remembered the previous night, when he desperately called out the name “Noen”… Lance had covered his mouth.
Lu Feiran suddenly broke down. He covered his face, tears spilling from between his fingers.
He thought he was lucky to have found love, but even his lover’s name was fake? What else was real?
What was Lance, what was Lance’s motive? He had nothing left, completely alone. Why would anyone deceive him? To watch him ridiculously fall in love with his ex-husband’s fiancé? To laugh at him?
Saying “forever”… forever deceiving was more like it!
Lu Feiran felt hollow. The sudden truth had drilled a hole in his heart, and looking through it, there was nothing but desolation.
“Your relationship was fundamentally flawed from the start.”
Tears dripped from his chin. So, he had never been loved, right?
His illusions were shattered three times: family, lover, and lover. Since his mother’s death, happiness had left with her.
Everyone who approached him had an agenda.
He took out his phone, opened his contacts, but his finger hesitated to press the familiar name.
Finally, he blocked the contact listed as “Noen.”
Too many tears were flowing, and he couldn’t wipe them away with the back of his hand. Raising his eyes through the blur, Lu Feiran noticed the car had driven onto an unfamiliar mountain road. There were no streetlights on the side of the road, just pitch blackness.
His heart sank: “Where is this?”
The masked driver looked very old, gripping the steering wheel tightly, not even glancing at the rearview mirror. He continued driving along the mountain road, ignoring Lu Feiran’s question.
Lu Feiran was scared. His phone was set to the emergency contact button, but he was startled to realize that he had just blocked his emergency contact half a minute ago.
So, he quickly sent a text message to Zhou Zihua, while preparing to call the police at any moment.
“Say something! Or I’m calling the police!”
The driver still didn’t answer, as if he didn’t care how Lu Feiran reacted.
The car kept accelerating. The mountain road was winding, and it crashed into the guardrail several times, producing a harsh noise and violent jolts.
“Zhai Qiance won’t let you off!” Lu Xingli’s words still echoed.
If he died, all his inheritance would be inherited by his father. By then, Zhai Qiance would be able to get whatever he wanted!
Lu Feiran fastened his seatbelt and simultaneously dialed the police. The operator asked for his location. Just as he was about to give the location shown on a nearby signpost, blinding headlights from a large truck shone directly at them.
The small car crashed head-on with the truck, then rolled down the cliff.
Despite being prepared, Lu Feiran still fainted from the massive impact force.
Having collided head-on with a large truck, the driver was killed instantly. And the airbag, ironically, failed to deploy.
…
Egret Garden was located in the suburbs. Going south led into the city, while going north led towards the forested mountainous area bordering the two cities.
After an unknown amount of time, Lu Feiran woke up. Everything before his eyes was blood red. He opened his eyes blankly, looking at the twisted corpse in front of him, his heart nearly stopping.
What happened? Why was he here? A car accident?
Lu Feiran had lost a segment of his memory. He only remembered discussing blueprints with the designer in the evening, intending to renovate Egret Garden in a style Lance would like.
How did it suddenly…
It hurts so much!
Any movement brought agonizing pain. His left arm seemed to be broken.
Lu Feiran painstakingly unbuckled his seatbelt. Moving even slightly felt like his whole body had been crushed. He probably shouldn’t move; there might be internal injuries.
He took out his phone. The screen was shattered, and the top right corner showed no signal, but could he still call the police?
He dialed the emergency number with a bloody finger. The operator asked if he was the one who had called earlier, stating that police forces had already been dispatched for rescue.
Lu Feiran sighed in relief. So, he had called before.
“Hello? Sir, are you alright? Hello?”
The phone was damaged, and the operator couldn’t seem to hear him.
Lu Feiran moaned softly. He had no choice but to remain still and press the emergency call button on his electronic watch to let Lance know his situation.
Beside them was a mountain stream. Rocks and red soil were exposed, with sparse vegetation. The car had crashed onto the muddy ground next to the stream.
Before long, Lu Feiran smelled a strong odor of gasoline. Was the fuel tank leaking?
There were no sparks in the forest, but to be safe and prevent the car from suddenly exploding, Lu Feiran managed to get out of the car, walking a little further away with difficult steps.
Lu Feiran looked up. The plants on the slope and cliff had been flattened in a trail. The car must have rolled down from here. The vegetation provided some cushioning, otherwise, he would have likely died. The driver must have died instantly.
He walked a little further away from the car, but kept the car in sight. A vehicle was a large target, easily spotted by rescuers, but he was genuinely afraid of the car exploding.
In a spot Lu Feiran couldn’t see, the driver’s phone, which had fallen to the ground, rang a few times, displaying a foreign country code. The number rang twice with no answer, and then stopped calling.
A few minutes later, Lu Feiran was startled by a small explosion. He swayed, and his broken left arm hurt intensely.
The car was engulfed in orange-red flames, burning fiercely, reflected in Lu Feiran’s eyes.
Someone wants to kill him.
Once this thought appeared, it hovered over Lu Feiran like a vulture searching for carrion. It felt as if a giant hand was clamped around his throat, and air could no longer enter his lungs.
Even though the memory of the car accident was lost due to the impact, Lu Feiran knew something was wrong.
He turned around, opened the offline map Lance had downloaded for him, and walked with difficult steps.
He had to go back. Someone was waiting for him at home. They had just gotten together, and hadn’t even had time to furnish their future home. He absolutely could not die like this.
Seeing his phone about to die and shut down, Lu Feiran frantically memorized the route. He had to get closer to the road.
After he left, a group of people quietly arrived at the burning car, and then quietly left.
