Chapter 15: The Dog and the Man (Part 2)
“Divorce” the two words slipped out. Lu…
The moment Lu Xingli rushed into the room, he locked the door and dove under the covers.
He hadn’t expected Lu Feiran to be so bold as to expose the matter in front of so many people. He did want Lu Feiran and Zhai Qiance to divorce, but that didn’t mean he wanted his own scandal exposed. How was he supposed to marry Zhai Qiance honorably now?
Those relatives would definitely spread the news everywhere, just like they spread the rumors that Lu Feiran was mentally ill!
The thought made Lu Xingli want to bang his head against the wall.
Knock knock knock—
“Xiao Xing, Xiao Xing, how are you? Mommy’s here. Can you come out and tell Mommy clearly, okay?” Qingzhi knocked on the door, trying to keep her voice gentle. “Tell Mommy, did that man surnamed Zhai force you?”
Qingzhi prided herself on having true love with Lu Liyie and never considered herself a third party who interfered in someone else’s relationship. But over the years, she had heard the gossip behind her back.
But she could endure it, knowing her precious son was the true young master of the Lu family was enough.
She looked forward to Lu Xingli inheriting the Lu Corporation legitimately… not this…
“Mom, no.” Lu Xingli opened the door, his face covered in tears. “He and I truly love each other. It’s Lu Feiran who is interfering, preventing us from being together—”
Slap!
Qingzhi slapped Lu Xingli across the face.
Lu Xingli’s cheek swelled up, his face blank: “Mom, you… you hit me?”
Qingzhi was, of course, the person who loved Lu Xingli most in the world, but seeing her son admit this, her heart suddenly ached piercingly.
Lu Xingli hadn’t expected even his own mother to not support him. His face turned red and then pale, and he suddenly felt a recklessness.
It made no sense for Lu Feiran to be swaggering downstairs while he hid up here. He hadn’t done anything wrong!
Lu Xingli shoved Qingzhi’s hand away and ran downstairs. Seeing Lu Feiran’s calm back, his anger flared.
In a fit of rage, Lu Xingli rushed over and grabbed Lu Feiran from behind. The impact was too great. The thin Lu Feiran couldn’t keep his balance and was violently shoved by Lu Xingli. His phone fell to the floor.
Lu Xingli tried to grab the phone to delete the video in Lu Feiran’s phone, but Lu Feiran quickly kicked him in the stomach. Lu Xingli curled up on the ground, holding his belly.
Lu Feiran picked up his phone, gasping for breath, stood up, and glared down at Lu Xingli: “Get out.”
Lu Feiran straightened his rumpled collar, looking at Lu Xingli sprawled on the floor and his father timidly waiting for Zhai Qiance to figure out a solution. He felt they truly resembled two dogs.
Lu Feiran squatted down, lifting Lu Xingli by the back of his collar to make him look up. He looked down at him, then leaned closer so Lu Xingli could clearly hear his words.
“Aren’t you curious why I called you?”
“Why?” Lu Xingli couldn’t help but ask. He wanted to know what the third marriage meant.
Lu Feiran smiled, revealing eight white teeth: “Let me tell you. Zhai Qiance is pursuing the young master of the Devel family.”
“Devel? What Devel!” Lu Xingli’s face flushed crimson. His expression was as if the sky was falling.
Lu Feiran found it amusing and continued casually: “You haven’t heard of the Devel family, have you? Zhai Qiance will divorce me and marry the Devel young master. Do you think you can compete with him? Will you still be able to pull off the same trick then?”
“Impossible! Impossible!” Lu Xingli vehemently denied it, but couldn’t come up with any evidence to support himself. “Don’t lie to me. Do you think you can fool me with such a clumsy lie?”
Lu Xingli thought: Zhai Qiance had indeed said he wouldn’t leave him, but Zhai Qiance hadn’t said he would marry him… It was his own doing, sensing Zhai Qiance’s desire for a divorce, that he started his baseless fantasy.
Lu Feiran looked at his nearly broken expression, feeling pity. He patted his face and said: “To Zhai Qiance, you are the pet, and he is the owner. He waves his hand, and you eagerly run over, rubbing against his palm like a dog. Do people marry pets? Your mother keeps a poodle. The poodle is loyal to its master, but would your mother choose a poodle over Lu Liyie?”
Lu Xingli’s breath hitched. He felt tremendously insulted. He struggled to stand up, but Lu Feiran pressed down on his back again, forcing him onto the ground.
“Noam Devel is exceptionally capable, the true successor of the Devel family. He is noble and elegant, completely different from a fool like you.” Seeing that Lu Xingli was clearly provoked, Lu Feiran added: “The main thing is that Zhai Qiance values him highly. He showers him with care and attention, running around for him, practically offering everything on a silver platter. Does he do that for you?”
“Do you understand, Lu Xingli?” Lu Feiran said, a choked feeling rising in his heart. The last few sentences were delivered through gritted teeth. “You act like a dog at Zhai Qiance’s feet, and he acts like a dog for someone else on the other side. The two of you are the embodiment of cheapness, just like your mistress mother.”
“Ah—” Lu Xingli screamed loudly, “You’re lying!”
Lu Feiran was provoked. His chest heaved, and he was about to say more, but was interrupted.
“Lu Feiran, there’s a limit to how much trouble you can cause. Now that you’ve caused such a scene today, have you thought about how to clean it up?”
Zhai Qiance walked over.
“Isn’t that something you two should be worrying about?” Lu Feiran retorted.
He relaxed his hold on Lu Xingli and stepped back.
Lu Xingli was undeniably a mess, disheveled all over, with a fresh red slap mark on his face. When Zhai Qiance arrived, he looked at him with a face full of grievance.
Zhai Qiance suppressed his anger and spoke to Lu Xingli as gently as possible: “You leave first.”
“I won’t…”
“Don’t make me say it a second time!”
Zhai Qiance raised his voice, sounding authoritative and intimidating. Lu Xingli shivered, shot a resentful look at Lu Feiran, and then reluctantly stood far away.
Lu Feiran looked at Zhai Qiance, sensing a hidden meaning in his words.
“Ranran,” the husband’s face was terrifying like a demon. He approached, leaning close to Lu Feiran’s ear. “Qinan Hospital. You wouldn’t want to go back there, would you? The various instances of your madness today have many witnesses. Tell me, if you lose legal capacity, can I, as your husband, send you back? Hmm?”
His tone was gentle and affectionate, but his words were like the whispers of a demon, making Lu Feiran’s scalp prickle and his heart drop.
This was the one thing Lu Feiran was truly afraid of.
Lu Feiran’s eyes stung. He took two steps back and saw his Aunt Xu standing behind Zhai Qiance, looking at him with concern. He rushed towards her as if grasping a lifesaver: “Aunt Xu, please quickly arrange a test for me. Prove that I’m not ill!”
Jian Xu immediately hugged him, saying repeatedly: “Okay, okay, no one can say you’re sick. I think that whole family is sick!”
Zhai Qiance didn’t take Jian Xu seriously. She was just a doctor. Did she dare oppose him?
He pulled Lu Feiran by the arm towards the door. The enormous force almost made Lu Feiran lose his balance. Having barely regained his footing, Lu Feiran only had time to toss his phone to Jian Xu.
Lu Liyie sat in his seat, still trying to cover up everything: “Jian Xu, this is a misunderstanding. Please excuse our domestic mess. Let those two resolve their own marital issues. Don’t get involved. You know, Ranran has always had a bit of a temper. He misunderstood this time, that’s why he’s acting like this.”
Lu Xingli was satisfied with his father’s explanation, a look of triumph appearing on his face.
Jian Xu, however, felt the whole family were monsters. Clutching Lu Feiran’s phone, she called the most recent contact.
The call was quickly answered. Jian Xu left the living room and went to the deserted foyer, saying: “Hello, are you Ranran’s friend? Please come and pick him up.”
The voice on the phone was steady and gentle, with a slight trilled accent: “Send me the address.”
…
The freshly trimmed lawn outside the main gate was soft, emitting a faint scent of fresh grass.
Lu Feiran was dragged by Zhai Qiance to the center of the lawn. His chin was held tightly by Zhai Qiance’s large hand, whose sharp gaze bore directly into him.
Zhai Qiance said: “Do you think Jian Xu can back you up? Or Zhou Zihua? Huh? Or someone else?”
Lu Feiran was provoked into laughter and intentionally angered Zhai Qiance: “You don’t know, do you? I have a lover. Not only is he unbelievably gentle to me, but he’s also much better-looking than you. Even the height you always pride yourself on can’t compare to him. Oh, and he’s not an illegitimate child, ha ha ha ha…”
Zhai Qiance’s expression was like a brewing storm cloud. His fingers tightened, leaving clear marks on Lu Feiran’s jawline and neck: “If you have a lover, don’t let me catch a hint of it, or both of you will suffer terribly!”
“Zhai Qiance, you’re actually very anxious, aren’t you! You want a divorce, but you don’t want to be forced into it by me. If you don’t divorce soon… won’t it be too late?”
“What?”
“If you don’t divorce… how will you proceed with the Devel family alliance?”
Lu Feiran smiled. His tear-stained eyelashes fluttered like butterflies about to take flight, extraordinarily captivating. He was genuinely happy. He had been trapping himself all along.
The Lu family was nothing remarkable. Taking the plunge wasn’t that hard.
The burdensome past had been like a gigantic shadow standing behind him. He dared not turn back, dared not look at it directly, dared not take a single step, fearing he would be crushed by the giant’s foot.
He had Zhai Qiance to thank for making him realize that the silent giant was just a pile of ashes that could be blown away by a breeze.
Zhai Qiance was completely enraged. His eyes were fierce, like a wolf tearing at its prey without letting go.
Lu Feiran knew? He knew everything, and that’s why he deliberately contacted Noam? And the Devel family… did they also know these things?
He hated himself for not being careful enough, for indulging Lu Feiran and Lu Xingli too much, giving them the chance to scheme right under his nose.
The panic of having the marriage alliance plan ruined caused Zhai Qiance to continuously vent his anger on Lu Feiran, his fingers tightening even more.
Lu Feiran slapped at Zhai Qiance’s hand, but it was useless. The oxygen in his windpipe was nearly squeezed out. He raised his arm and used all his strength to slap Zhai Qiance across the face.
Zhai Qiance’s face snapped to the side, and the pressure in his hand eased.
The ferocity faded from Zhai Qiance’s face. Lu Feiran broke free from Zhai Qiance’s grip and retreated rapidly. The two stood a distance apart, silently glaring at each other.
Lu Feiran couldn’t stay calm. Zhai Qiance was physically strong. He could choke him whenever he wanted. If they weren’t at the Lu family home, no one would know if he was strangled to death!
“Let’s go back and talk, Lu Feiran.” Zhai Qiance changed his strategy.
Lu Feiran ignored him and quickly interjected: “I’m still curious about one thing. How exactly did you fall for Lu Xingli? Even a fool can see how much Lu Xingli resembles Lu Liyie! But Lu Xingli is an idiot. He doesn’t have Lu Liyie’s depth of thought. How could someone as arrogant as you be interested in a shallow good-for-nothing, unless…”
Lu Feiran’s eyes curved in a wild, mocking smile. He quickly added: “Unless you are interested in Lu Liyie, and Lu Xingli is just his substitute!”
“Ranran!” Jian Xu ran out.
Her appearance forced Zhai Qiance to restrain himself, but Zhai Qiance was already on the brink of explosion. If Jian Xu hadn’t appeared, he might have killed Lu Feiran without hesitation.
He glanced at Jian Xu, then turned away with a cold face. Moments later, he made a phone call: “Find out who Lu Feiran has been in contact with recently.”
People don’t change suddenly. Lu Feiran dared to treat him with such defiance, believing he had support.
Zhai Qiance persisted in this belief, but he didn’t know that before he entered his life, Lu Feiran’s original personality was exactly this: flamboyant, casual, and unrestrained.
Lu Feiran immediately pulled his collar up, lowering his head slightly so Jian Xu wouldn’t see the marks from being choked.
Jian Xu stood on her tiptoes and patted Lu Feiran’s head. Then she placed the silk scarf-wrapped red envelope in his hand and said: “I called your friend. Is it okay if you leave with him? It’s not convenient for you to come to my house; there are Lu family members there, and you probably don’t want to see him.”
“Friend? Who is it?” Lu Feiran took the phone blankly.
In the call history, the black word “Devel” was strikingly prominent, making Lu Feiran speechless.
“You… you called him?”
“Can’t I?” Jian Xu covered her mouth, thinking she had called the wrong person. “Then I’ll call again and tell him not to come.”
Lu Feiran hastily waved his hand: “No, it’s not that…”
It’s just…
He had just asked Zhai Qiance for a divorce! He divorces Zhai Qiance, and Zhai Qiance marries Devel? And now he was waiting for his husband’s fiancé to pick him up?
Could Zhai Qiance just have an accident and drown in a river? That would solve everything.
Lu Feiran was close to collapsing.
