Chapter 13: The Cards Are on the Table
A man who has slept with Lu Xingli, so dirty, how could I possibly want him?
Returning to Luyuan, Lu Feiran expected to see Lu Liyie and Lu Xingli, but was surprised to find only Zhai Qiance.
Zhai Qiance sat on the sofa as if nothing had happened, dealing with company affairs as usual, only lazily looking up when Lu Feiran entered.
Lu Feiran’s brow furrowed, his heart sinking.
“Was my absence these few days convenient for the two of you?” Lu Feiran said calmly.
Only then did Zhai Qiance put down the laptop on his legs, saying as if nothing was amiss: “This is a misunderstanding. I can explain.”
“Go ahead,” Lu Feiran sneered inwardly, wanting to see what Zhai Qiance could fabricate this time.
“Lu Xingli had a falling out with Dad and ran away from home. I was worried he’d get into trouble alone, so I let him stay here for two days. Who knew…” Zhai Qiance looked helpless and regretful. “Who knew he would do something like that while I was asleep!”
Lu Feiran watched Zhai Qiance brazenly lie, admiring his audacity.
Lu Xingli had sent the video right to his face, yet Zhai Qiance was still playing dumb, treating him like an utter fool?
“So, how do you plan to handle it?” Lu Feiran asked.
Zhai Qiance shrugged indifferently: “Dad has grounded him and taught him a lesson. I know he’s always been at odds with you and jealous of you, so it’s understandable that he would do such a thing.”
Zhai Qiance’s light tone was like commenting on the good weather.
Lu Feiran looked at Zhai Qiance’s face and found him utterly ridiculous. He was truly a man who could wear a mask from head to toe.
In the past, he played the loyal dog in front of Lu Feiran, willing to humble himself to the dust. Later, in front of the poor but idealistic Jin Zhan, he played a mature, wealthy elder, making Jin Zhan believe he was in a romantic fairy tale and willingly continued to work for him after graduation.
Now, Zhai Qiance was eager to embark on another marriage. Devel was mature, gentle, yet possessed an innocent kindness, unaware of the ways of the world. Facing such a person, Zhai Qiance would be very willing to play the loyal knight, wouldn’t he?
The two confronted each other. Lu Feiran’s long silence caused the relaxed atmosphere Zhai Qiance had painstakingly manufactured to grow cold.
Zhai Qiance finally had to look directly at Lu Feiran. He saw the mockery in Lu Feiran’s eyes, as if he were watching a joke.
A ball of fire suddenly rose from the depths of his heart. Zhai Qiance’s face felt as though Lu Feiran’s gaze had violently slapped him several times. Lu Feiran seemed to be saying, “Stop acting, I know everything.”
Having his poor lie exposed made Zhai Qiance feel humiliated and angry. The more scornful and cold Lu Feiran’s eyes were, the calmer his demeanor, the more Zhai Qiance felt like a clown.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Zhai Qiance’s mind.
Why wasn’t Lu Feiran angry? Did he already know? Or, was he eager for him to cheat?
Once this thought formed, it circled endlessly in Zhai Qiance’s mind.
Lu Feiran shook his head, his eyes drooping indifferently.
Minimizing the severity and trivializing the situation—that was exactly what Zhai Qiance would do. He wanted a divorce, but absolutely not one caused by scandal. That would inevitably be exposed later, causing him to lose face.
Furthermore, Zhai Qiance already knew he was acquainted with Devel. If he couldn’t convince Lu Feiran that this was a mistake, his infidelity would likely become known to the Devel family.
Lu Feiran smirked, determined not to let him have his way.
“Do you dare to say you two haven’t done anything? A man who has slept with Lu Xingli, so dirty, how could I possibly want him?” His tone was like describing a piece of roadside trash. “Zhai Qiance, are you that sound asleep? You wouldn’t even know if he killed you?”
“Lu Feiran!” Zhai Qiance roared, standing up.
Those words stung Zhai Qiance worse than a knife. Lu Feiran dared to call him dirty? On what grounds?!
Zhai Qiance strode forward, only to see Lu Feiran meet his gaze without flinching.
A sense of unfamiliarity washed over him. He suddenly felt that Lu Feiran was somewhat different from before.
The former Lu Feiran was not only thin but also lethargic, seeming unenthusiastic about everything. Even his delicate, handsome face appeared dull and grey. Now, a strength had grown within Lu Feiran, like a seed that had found sweet rain, breaking through the dry soil and growing into a resilient sapling.
Zhai Qiance’s face instantly turned ashen.
Lu Feiran was once close to death. He was the one who went to great lengths to save Lu Feiran. Lu Feiran should be eternally grateful to him, becoming his potted plant, growing only in his flower pot.
If he wants Lu Feiran to live, Lu Feiran lives. If he doesn’t want Lu Feiran to have a good life, Lu Feiran can only wither!
How dare the vulnerable Lu Feiran speak to him like this? Zhai Qiance thought of a possibility: Lu Feiran had found backing. Someone was helping him.
Zhai Qiance’s inner world was in turmoil. He was both jealous and secretly hoping Lu Feiran had cheated. If so, he could definitely divorce Lu Feiran with his reputation ruined.
Lu Feiran looked up slightly into Zhai Qiance’s eyes, suddenly unable to bear it for another moment. How dare Zhai Qiance look down on him?
“I want a divorce,” Lu Feiran said.
The moment those two words left his mouth, he suddenly felt much lighter, as if the shackles that had bound him had loosened.
Zhai Qiance lunged forward. His tall figure blocked the light, casting a dark shadow over Lu Feiran. He glared, his face filled with the anger of being offended, as if Lu Feiran uttering the word “divorce” was a massive humiliation to him.
Lu Feiran didn’t want to argue further: “If you don’t want this matter to spread, you’d better agree immediately. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do.”
Lu Feiran turned to go to the study but was abruptly grabbed by the wrist by Zhai Qiance. His wrist was slender and was firmly held by Zhai Qiance, hurting him.
The distance between Zhai Qiance and Lu Feiran instantly closed, intimate and ambiguous enough to make Lu Feiran deeply uncomfortable.
He violently shook his arm, trying to break free. During the struggle, the round collar of his sweater was crumpled and twisted, exposing half of his sharp, pale collarbone and neck.
“I haven’t even asked you yet, Ranran,” Zhai Qiance’s voice was like a cunning snake, dark and sticky, sending a chill down Lu Feiran’s spine. “This outfit isn’t your usual style. Have you really been at Zhou Zihua’s house all these days?”
Lu Feiran froze, understanding Zhai Qiance’s insinuation. He asked incredulously, “Are you sick? Do you think everyone is like you? You have no count of how many people you’ve been with, do you?”
“Oh, so, Ranran, you knew all along but kept quiet, intending to find my fault and gather evidence of my cheating?” Zhai Qiance chuckled sinisterly. “You have such good methods. Who gave you the idea?”
Zhai Qiance’s dark brown pupils reflected Lu Feiran’s bloodless face. He looked meaningfully at his spouse of three years, watching him bite his trembling lip, watching him constantly avoid eye contact.
He laughed softly, touching Lu Feiran’s cheek with his other hand.
Lu Feiran immediately turned his face away, not allowing Zhai Qiance’s fingertip to linger on his skin for a second longer. Spending another second with Zhai Qiance made him feel disgusted and nauseous!
He felt for the phone in his pocket, pressing the side button, ready to call Zhou Zihua at any moment.
If Zhai Qiance dared to become violent, he would definitely call the police!
“Let go of me, Zhai Qiance,” Lu Feiran’s voice trembled slightly. “No one gave me ideas. I could find out on my own.”
“Then Ranran is truly too smart.” Zhai Qiance’s gaze was hidden behind the reflective lenses, unclear.
He released Lu Feiran’s hand and stepped back.
“Go see Dad tomorrow, Ranran. You were too willful this time. Sending a fake video to Dad without verification almost gave him a heart attack. You need to apologize to him.”
Zhai Qiance’s words were even more bizarre than his expression. Lu Feiran looked at him as if he were looking at a stranger wearing a mask.
How could he act as if nothing happened? I’ve already said I want a divorce!
Lu Feiran secretly applauded, knowing this wasn’t the rhythm Zhai Qiance wanted. Zhai Qiance wanted to control the divorce process, not let Lu Feiran lead.
Fine, in that case, neither of us should have an easy time!
Lu Feiran: “If you want to escalate the impact, go ahead.”
With that, Lu Feiran turned and walked towards the guest room. Before opening the door, he said: “Oh, right. I hope you can move out soon and stop appearing in my house.”
Closing the door, Lu Feiran leaned against it, lowering his head and rubbing his hair, a chill spreading through his heart.
Zhai Qiance was malicious to the core. He knew Lu Feiran had psychological trauma related to the Lu family and was afraid of seeing people and things from that family, so Zhai Qiance deliberately wanted him to return there.
But Zhai Qiance didn’t know that times had changed. He would no longer be a bird startled by the mere twang of a bowstring, filled with panic at a name or a shadow.
Zhai Qiance knew too little about him. Three years of marriage, and nothing was left between them.
Sitting on the floor, Lu Feiran called Lu Xingli’s number.
The recipient hadn’t saved Lu Feiran’s name and quickly picked up: “Hello? Who is this?”
Lu Xingli’s voice was as annoying as ever. Lu Feiran waited a moment before speaking: “You should be satisfied. I asked Zhai Qiance for a divorce.”
Lu Xingli was ecstatic, his scalp tingling.
Exactly! Once this matter was exposed, given Lu Feiran’s personality, he definitely couldn’t tolerate it. With his self-important, arrogant temper, Zhai Qiance would absolutely not indulge him!
Lu Feiran noticed Lu Xingli’s excitement and smirked: “But… don’t celebrate too soon. If you want to be with Zhai Qiance, you might have to take a number and wait in line.”
“What do you mean?” Lu Xingli’s face changed slightly.
“It means you might only have a chance when Zhai Qiance gets married for the third time!”
Without waiting for Lu Xingli’s reply, Lu Feiran hung up with a laugh. He knew Lu Xingli wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.
The anger of a fool was more useful than the anger of a clever person.
The next day, Zhai Qiance was surprised by Lu Feiran’s composure. The fear and helplessness he expected to see on Lu Feiran’s face were completely absent, replaced only by ease and indifference.
When he first met Lu Feiran, Lu Feiran was a wounded little beast—although full of defense, his entire being yearned for love.
Therefore, he easily molded Lu Feiran into his hand.
But looking at Lu Feiran now, Zhai Qiance actually felt he resembled a warrior covered in hard armor. Suddenly, Zhai Qiance felt a sense of helplessness towards Lu Feiran.
Zhai Qiance could only pin his hopes on the Lu family, relying on Lu Liyie to intervene and make Lu Feiran realize that Zhai Qiance was the only person who could protect him, and that without him, he would remain isolated and helpless, thus temporarily giving up on divorce.
And with the time gained, Zhai Qiance swore he would definitely dig out the person behind Lu Feiran.
If Lu Feiran was truly innocent, then he wouldn’t mind fabricating a backer.
He absolutely could not be the party at fault for the divorce.
