Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband - Chapter 77
Shen Lai initially thought the discomfort was due to eating wasabi and didn’t pay it much mind.
However, the pain grew increasingly intense, as if a stick were churning inside her stomach. Her face paled, and her movements slowed.
“Shen Lai, what’s wrong?” Bai Hansui handed her a glass of water. “Is it too spicy?”
Shen Lai didn’t take it. Clenching her lower lip, she stared at the plate in front of her, just a little more, and she’d be done.
But before she could reach out, a sharp, stabbing pain pierced through her nerves like a steel needle. Cold sweat broke out across her forehead, and she doubled over in agony.
Wu Qi, who was beside her, was the first to notice something was wrong. “Shen Lai, are you okay?”
Before Shen Lai could respond, Bai Hansui cut in, “It’s nothing. Maybe it’s just too spicy. She’ll be fine after resting a bit.”
Wu Qi, noticing Shen Lai’s labored breathing and unnatural pallor, quickly set down her plate and hurried over. “Are you alright?”
Shen Lai pressed a hand tightly against her abdomen, her voice strained. “My stomach… it really hurts.”
[What’s wrong with Shen Lai?]
[Damn, could those raspberries actually be poisonous?]
[No way the production team would pull something like that. She must’ve eaten something bad.]
[She was fine earlier. It started after eating the stuff the crew provided, definitely their fault.]
The commotion soon drew the attention of others. Huo Chilin turned at the noise and saw Shen Lai leaning against the table, clearly in distress.
Frowning, he instinctively moved to approach her, but before he could, a tall figure strode past him.
Gasping in pain, Shen Lai suddenly felt a strong arm steadying her waist. She looked up and met Pei Jingyan’s grave expression.
“What’s wrong?”
The moment she saw him, Shen Lai clung to him like driftwood in a storm, weakly gripping his sleeve. “My stomach… it hurts…”
Pei Jingyan took in her ashen face, bloodless lips, and sweat-dampened hair clinging to her cheeks. Her slender frame trembled faintly. Without hesitation, he scooped her into his arms and immediately called the boat operator from earlier.
Anticipating emergencies like the one from the previous day, Pei Jingyan had arranged for a speedboat to remain on standby. Once aboard, they rushed Shen Lai to the hospital at full speed.
In the hospital’s VIP ward, the doctor reviewed the test results and addressed Pei Jingyan. “Mr. Pei, the patient appears to have cyanide poisoning. We detected trace amounts of the toxin in what she consumed.”
Pei Jingyan’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Cyanide?”
The doctor nodded. “What did she eat today?”
A cold glint flashed in Pei Jingyan’s gaze as he immediately recalled the raspberries provided by the production team. Shen Lai had started feeling unright after eating them.
His voice was low and menacing. “How is she?”
The doctor sighed in relief. “Fortunately, she was brought in promptly, and the ingested amount was minimal. After gastric lavage, she’s out of danger.”
Pei Jingyan’s tense expression softened slightly. “What about the baby? Any risks?”
The doctor smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry. Both mother and child are fine. However, we recommend she stays in the hospital for proper rest and recovery before being discharged.”
Pei Jingyan nodded, “I understand. Thank you, doctor.”
After the doctor left, Pei Jingyan walked to the hospital bed and sat down. Gazing at Shen Lai’s pale face, he reached out to brush the hair away from her forehead.
Shen Lai was still unconscious, her eyes closed. Whether due to discomfort or not, her delicate eyelashes trembled faintly.
Pei Jingyan tucked the blanket securely around her, then pulled out his phone and dialed Director Miao.
Director Miao was already overwhelmed by the sudden incident. Seeing Pei Jingyan’s call, he quickly answered, “Mr. Pei, how is Miss Shen? Is she alright?”
Before Pei Jingyan could speak, Director Miao hurriedly added, “We thoroughly checked the raspberries beforehand, there was absolutely no issue. We have no idea why Miss Shen suddenly had stomach pains.”
The production team wasn’t foolish enough to shoot themselves in the foot by poisoning a guest, unless Director Miao had a sudden craving for prison food.
So, there was only one possibility: someone else had laced the berries with cyanide.
And that person had to be among the guests.
Pei Jingyan suddenly asked, “Where are those raspberries now?”
Director Miao didn’t understand why Pei Jingyan was asking, but he answered truthfully, “We collected them all. Worried they might be contaminated, we were planning to dispose of them.”
Pei Jingyan said coldly, “Don’t throw them away. Hand them over to me.”
Though Director Miao had no idea what Pei Jingyan intended to do, he didn’t dare question him. “Understood.”
“And one more thing,” Pei Jingyan’s voice was low. “If anyone asks about Shen Lai’s condition, just say she ate something bad. Don’t say anything else.”
Director Miao wouldn’t dare disobey. The fact that Pei Jingyan hadn’t come after the production team was already a blessing. He quickly replied, “Don’t worry, I won’t say a word more.”
After hanging up, Pei Jingyan turned back to look at Shen Lai on the hospital bed, his eyes shadowed with something unreadable.
When Director Miao returned to the campsite, the other guests crowded around, asking about Shen Lai’s condition.
Remembering Pei Jingyan’s instructions, Director Miao brushed it off casually. “Mr. Pei said it’s nothing serious, just food poisoning.”
Wu Qi let out a relieved sigh, patting her chest. “That’s good.”
No one noticed Bai Hansui’s hands clenching into fists beneath her sleeves, a flash of resentment crossing her face.
Shen Lai had actually gotten away unscathed.
Just then, Tong Miaoling beside her suddenly said, “Hey, what’s this on your clothes?”
Bai Hansui snapped out of her thoughts and followed her gaze, spotting a purple stain on her sleeve, glaringly obvious against the white fabric.
A flicker of unease crossed her eyes, and she quickly replied, “Oh, I must’ve brushed against something. I’ll wash it later.”
Once the group dispersed, Bai Hansui took advantage of the moment when no one was paying attention and quietly slipped back into her tent to change out of the T-shirt.
Huo Chilin had just returned to his tent to rest when he saw Bai Hansui emerge. He was about to call out to her when he noticed her glancing around furtively before heading into the woods.
Frowning, Huo Chilin hesitated for a moment before following her.
Bai Hansui walked deep into the forest, checking her surroundings to ensure no one was watching. Then, she pulled out the T-shirt from her bag and casually tossed it down the hillside.
Unnoticed by her, the shirt snagged on a tree branch.
After Bai Hansui left, Huo Chilin emerged from behind the large tree. He walked to the hillside and picked up the discarded garment, recognizing it as the clothes Bai Hansui had worn that day.
Huo Chilin frowned deeply.
Why would Bai Hansui throw away perfectly good clothes?
Even if they were damaged beyond repair, there was no need to go so far out of the way just to discard them.
Huo Chilin absently flipped open the T-shirt and, by chance, noticed stains on the sleeve, they looked somewhat like raspberry juice.
