- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 38 - How Sweet It Used to Be
Bai Hansui’s face quickly flushed with panic and confusion. She never expected Shen Lai to bring up the past in front of so many people.
Especially the guests and staff present, their expressions toward the two of them had noticeably changed.
Bai Hansui hurriedly said, “Lai Lai, what nonsense are you talking about? Even if you resent me for not helping your family, you can’t just slander me like this.”
Shen Lai replied calmly, “I don’t recall ever asking you to help my family.”
Then, with a slight smile, she added, “Besides, given your family’s circumstances, I doubt you could’ve helped even if you wanted to, right?”
The bluntness of her words made Bai Hansui’s expression shift slightly.
Outsiders might not know, but those within their social circle were well aware that the Bai family was merely wealthy, far from being part of the true upper class.
Back then, if Bai Hansui hadn’t done Shen Lai a favor, the two of them would never have become close friends.
Watching Bai Hansui’s face alternate between red and pale, Shen Lai leisurely added, “And like Pei Jingyan said, if I really needed help, wouldn’t going to him have been much faster?”
As she spoke, Shen Lai turned her head to glance at Pei Jingyan beside her.
Pei Jingyan’s lips curled into a teasing smile. He lazily raised his hand and casually draped it over Shen Lai’s shoulder, instantly closing the distance between them.
The woman in his arms stiffened for a moment. Pei Jingyan lowered his gaze, his eyes skimming over Shen Lai’s slightly tense smile, and drawled in a playful tone, “You’re right. After all, I was pursuing you back then. Forget helping your family, if you’d asked for the stars, I’d have plucked them from the sky for you.”
[Damn, so it was Pei Jingyan who pursued Shen Lai first?!]
[No wonder Pei Jingyan’s always been the more proactive one during missions, this explains it!]
[A domineering CEO chasing the bankrupt heiress for love? Holy shit, I’m already imagining a whole drama plot.]
[But this also proves Bai Hansui was lying, right? She stole Shen Lai’s boyfriend, why would Shen Lai ask her for help? And with Pei Jingyan, who’s rich and powerful and had a crush on her, wouldn’t he have been way more useful than Bai Hansui?]
[No wonder Huo Chilin’s attitude toward Shen Lai and Pei Jingyan was so weird, they used to date! Ugh, what a scumbag!]
For a moment, the live chat was flooded with viewers condemning Huo Chilin. However, Bai Hansui’s fans refused to accept it and kept arguing.
[Just because Shen Lai says Bai Hansui stole her boyfriend, does that make it true? How do we know she’s not just framing her?]
[Exactly! And would Pei Jingyan have helped her for free? Maybe Shen Lai didn’t want to sell herself, so she turned to Hansui instead. Weren’t they best friends back then? That’s totally normal!]
[Don’t just believe everything you hear! What if Shen Lai was the one who stole Hansui’s boyfriend? Shouldn’t she be kowtowing to Hansui in apology?]
Shen Lai swallowed slightly.
Even though she knew Pei Jingyan was deliberately putting on an act for the cameras, her body still tingled the moment he pulled her close.
She looked up at him, only to find Pei Jingyan already staring back, his gaze so intense it felt almost suffocating.
Her heart skipped a beat for no reason.
Suddenly, she realized Pei Jingyan was quite the actor.
Even though he despised her, he could still fake such deep affection so convincingly.
Huo Chilin’s eyes were locked onto Pei Jingyan’s hand resting on Shen Lai’s shoulder. For a fleeting moment, he didn’t want to deny their past.
Somehow, it felt like this was the only way he could still be connected to her.
Moreover, he was originally Shen Lai’s ex-boyfriend.
At that moment, Bai Hansui’s voice suddenly rang in his ears, “Chilin…”
Bai Hansui was staring at him with those pitiful, fragile eyes, seemingly waiting for him to take a stand. Only then did Huo Chilin remember he was still on the show. He steadied himself and said to Shen Lai, “You can eat whatever you want, but you can’t just say whatever you want. My girlfriend has always been Bai Hansui, and only her.”
After speaking, he gripped Bai Hansui’s shoulder as if declaring his ownership.
Shen Lai hadn’t wanted to get involved with the two of them. If Huo Chilin hadn’t made such a blatant mistake, she wouldn’t have bothered giving people gossip material.
But since this couple insisted on targeting her, she wasn’t about to let them walk all over her.
Shen Lai shrugged. “Since you’re determined to throw dirt on me, let’s just pull up the chat history. That can’t be faked, right?”
She asked Director Miao for her phone back. Director Miao, eager to create more explosive content, practically handed it to her with both hands.
Seeing Shen Lai about to scroll through their past chat history, Huo Chilin’s expression changed. Instinctively, he stepped forward to snatch the phone.
But before he could even touch Shen Lai, a strong, forceful hand abruptly clamped down on his wrist.
Pei Jingyan lazily positioned himself between the two, his tone unhurried. “Young Master Huo, my wife is pregnant. If you lay a hand on her and something happens to the baby in her belly, can you take responsibility for that?”
Huo Chilin’s face tightened like a drawn bowstring, ready to snap at any moment.
Pei Jingyan, as if reveling in the drama, continued leisurely, “Besides, weren’t you so sure she was lying? If that’s the case, why are you in such a hurry? Once the records are out, we’ll know who’s really lying.”
[Yeah, why is Huo Chilin making such a big deal out of this? Isn’t this just a case of “the guilty man protesting too much”?]
[I originally thought Shen Lai was lying, but seeing Huo Chilin’s reaction now, I think she might be telling the truth.]
[Let’s be real, though, Pei protecting his wife is so hot. If what Shen Lai said is true, it’s a good thing she broke up with Huo Chilin. Pei outclasses him in every way.]
Shen Lai hadn’t expected Pei Jingyan to intervene either. As she stood there stunned, Pei Jingyan turned to her, tilting his chin slightly. “Do what you need to do. I’m here, no one can touch you.”
Her heart trembled inexplicably, an indescribable emotion flashing through her for a fleeting moment.
She gave a slight nod and, under everyone’s gaze, opened WeChat.
After their breakup, Shen Lai had blocked Huo Chilin but hadn’t deleted him as a friend, so their chat history remained intact.
As the contents of the screen were projected onto the wall, their entire conversation history, from the day they started dating to Huo Chilin breaking up with her six months ago, was laid bare for the live audience to see.
[Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! They really were a couple!!]
[Shen Lai has incredible restraint, she kept this under wraps for so long. If it were me, the moment I saw this pair of scumbags, I’d have taught them a lesson!]
[Shen Lai was already getting hate from the entire internet, and she doesn’t have Bai Hansui’s fanbase. Even if she had spoken up, no one would’ve believed her.]
[Right? Before, when Huo Chilin was clearly picking on her, their CP fans still accused Shen Lai of seducing him. Hilarious! turns out their precious ‘sister’ was the other woman all along!]
[Suddenly, I feel so bad for Shen Lai. Her family went bankrupt, her boyfriend not only broke up with her but also got together with her best friend. The fact that she didn’t lose her mind shows how strong she is.]
[Huo Chilin and Bai Hansui, that trashy couple—I’m done being their fan! Ugh!]
The trending list was once again dominated by the names of these three.

“You two used to be so sweet together.”
Pei Jingyan had appeared beside her at some point, his tone ambiguous as he spoke.
