- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 109 - Should I Feed You?
Shen Lai suddenly remembered that Huo Chilin had also been at the warehouse earlier that day. When Bai Hansui was about to attack her, it was Huo Chilin who had warned them.
Thinking of this, Shen Lai’s tone softened slightly. “I’m fine.”
Huo Chilin glanced toward the hospital room and said stiffly, “What about him?”
The identity of “him” was obvious. Shen Lai replied calmly, “He’s fine too.”
The atmosphere fell into silence for a moment before Huo Chilin spoke up to break it. “I never expected him to step in and save you.”
Not only was Huo Chilin surprised, but Shen Lai hadn’t seen it coming either.
If Bai Hansui’s angle had been slightly different, that knife might not have just grazed Pei Jingyan’s arm.
But Shen Lai had no interest in sharing her thoughts with Huo Chilin. She changed the subject. “If there’s nothing else, you should go.”
Hearing her cold tone, Huo Chilin’s heart ached. He remained rooted in place. “Can I go in and talk to him for a bit?”
Shen Lai immediately looked at him warily. “What do you want to say to him?”
Seeing her guarded expression, Huo Chilin gave a bitter smile. “You don’t have to be so defensive. What could I possibly do to him?”
Shen Lai realized he was right. The Huo family wasn’t even fit to hold a candle to the Pei family, let alone pose any threat to Pei Jingyan.
“Do whatever you want.”
Still feeling awkward about what had happened in the hospital room earlier, Shen Lai had no intention of going back in with Huo Chilin. She made up an excuse and left.
After Shen Lai was gone, Huo Chilin entered the room. Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow when he saw him. “You?”
Huo Chilin stopped at the foot of the bed. “I came to see how you were doing.”
Pei Jingyan smirked lazily. “Sorry to disappoint you, Young Master Huo, but I’m perfectly fine.”
“Quite disappointing indeed,” Huo Chilin said evenly. “But even if something had happened to you, Shen Lai wouldn’t have chosen me.”
Pei Jingyan’s brow twitched slightly as he looked up at Huo Chilin. His expression was serious, no hint of a joke.
“At least you’re self-aware,” Pei Jingyan drawled, leaning back against the headboard. “But I am curious, why did you warn us today?”
If not for Huo Chilin’s shout, Bai Hansui might have succeeded.
Huo Chilin’s face tightened, his hands clenching slightly at his sides. “Actually, I knew about Bai Hansui drugging Shen Lai last time. But I kept quiet.”
Helping Bai Hansui cover it up had already been a grave mistake. This time, he didn’t want to repeat it.
Recalling how Pei Jingyan had stepped in without hesitation to shield Shen Lai from the knife, Huo Chilin had to admit, Pei Jingyan was bolder than he’d expected.
Even he couldn’t guarantee he would have done the same.
Huo Chilin took a deep breath. “I hope you’ll treat Shen Lai well from now on. If I find out you’ve hurt her, I won’t let it slide.”
Pei Jingyan scoffed. “And what right do you have to say that to me?”
Huo Chilin clenched his fists. “You’re right! I don’t have any right. But if Shen Lai ever chooses me, my door will always be open for her.”
The two locked eyes, the air between them thick with tension.
After what felt like an eternity, Pei Jingyan finally looked away and said, word by word, “Don’t worry. You’ll never get that chance.”
When Shen Lai returned to the hospital room, Huo Chilin was already gone.
She glanced around. “Did Huo Chilin leave?”
Pei Jingyan said calmly, “He just left not long ago.”
Shen Lai casually asked, “What did he come to talk to you about?”
Pei Jingyan glanced at Shen Lai, his tone deliberately nonchalant. “He told me to take good care of you, or else he’d try to steal you away.”
Shen Lai pursed her lips, wondering where Huo Chilin got the confidence to say something like that.
Even if she divorced Pei Jingyan, there was no way she’d end up with Huo Chilin.
Seeing that it was getting late, Shen Lai was about to go find a nurse to arrange for a family member’s bed when Pei Jingyan stopped her. “Where are you going?”
Shen Lai turned back and said, “There’s only one bed here. I’ll ask the nurse to bring me a family bed.”
Pei Jingyan replied lightly, “Why not just share the bed?”
Shen Lai stiffened slightly.
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow. “What, afraid I’ll do something to you?”
Shen Lai swallowed. She thought to herself, it wasn’t like they hadn’t slept together during the show. There was nothing to be embarrassed about.
With that in mind, Shen Lai lifted her chin defiantly. “Who said I’m afraid? I’m just worried about bumping into your wound.”
Watching Shen Lai’s bluster, Pei Jingyan’s lips curled slightly as he patted the empty space beside him.
“You’re the one who told me to get in. If I accidentally touch your wound, don’t blame me.”
As she spoke, Shen Lai climbed onto the bed, lying stiffly beside Pei Jingyan.
Come to think of it, since the show ended, the two of them hadn’t shared a bed, almost a month had passed.
Time really flew.
Perhaps because of everything that had happened that day, Shen Lai closed her eyes, and drowsiness quickly overtook her. She soon drifted into sleep.
When Pei Jingyan turned his head, he saw Shen Lai already asleep. Maybe because of the kidnapping ordeal, she seemed restless, curling up slightly. Even in the dim light, her skin glowed pale.
Pei Jingyan noticed the scratches on Shen Lai’s neck, and a cold glint flashed in his eyes.
That night, the news of Bai Hansui kidnapping Shen Lai quickly trended online. Netizens finally realized why Shen Lai had suddenly gone live saying those strange things, she had been threatened.
Shortly after the hashtag went viral, paparazzi leaked photos of Shen Lai and Pei Jingyan in the hospital. In the pictures, Pei Jingyan was getting stitches while Shen Lai sat beside him, gripping his hand tightly, her face full of concern.
[You call this a fake marriage? Bai Hansui, do you even know what a fake marriage is?]
[The worry in Shen Lai’s eyes is practically overflowing. If she could act this well, she’d win an Oscar.]
[LOL, Bai Hansui tried to ruin Shen Lai and Pei Jingyan with that livestream, but she ended up proving they’re the real deal.]
[Sorry, but we’re under no obligation to believe a kidnapper.]
The hospital photos spread rapidly across the internet. Instead of her reputation collapsing, Shen Lai gained a wave of new shippers.
Unaware of the overnight shift in public opinion, Shen Lai woke up to find herself somehow nestled in Pei Jingyan’s arms.
The scene felt like a return to their time filming the variety show.
Shen Lai gazed at Pei Jingyan’s sleeping face. After a moment, she quietly slipped a hand out from under the covers, mustering the courage to gently touch his cheek.
She couldn’t help but wish time could freeze in this moment.
Just then, Pei Jingyan’s eyelashes fluttered. Shen Lai immediately pulled back from his embrace, pretending she had just woken up.
Just then, the assistant arrived, bringing back breakfast from a nearby restaurant.
Due to his injury, Pei Jingyan could only eat light food. Shen Lai noticed that his hand holding the spoon was unsteady, dropping it onto the table several times.
Watching this, Shen Lai felt a pang of guilt.
After all, Pei Jingyan had gotten hurt because of her.
Thinking of this, she cleared her throat softly and said, “Should I feed you instead?”
