Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband - Chapter 107
The moment the crowd saw the police arrive, they immediately scattered in all directions.
Shen Lai was still dazed by the sudden turn of events. When she looked up, she saw a tall figure walking in, silhouetted against the light.
The moment she recognized Pei Jingyan’s face, her nose stung with sudden emotion.
She had thought he wouldn’t come to save her.
Pei Jingyan’s gaze instantly locked onto Shen Lai lying on the ground, her hair disheveled, her cheeks smudged with dust, several buttons of her clothes torn open, revealing her pale, almost glaringly bright shoulders. A cold glint flashed in his eyes.
“You-”
Before he could finish, Shen Lai suddenly threw herself into his arms.
Pei Jingyan stiffened as Shen Lai clung tightly to his waist, her voice trembling with a mix of accusation and choked-back sobs. “Why did you take so long? I thought I was going to die here today!”
The person in his arms was shaking uncontrollably. Pei Jingyan’s throat moved slightly as he suppressed his emotions, then hesitantly placed a hand on her back, patting gently. “I’m sorry. I came too late.”
Shen Lai sniffled softly. In all her life, the worst thing she had experienced was her family’s bankruptcy, no one had ever treated her like this before.
If Pei Jingyan hadn’t arrived in time, that scar-faced man might have already succeeded.
Noticing how violently Shen Lai was trembling, Pei Jingyan pulled back slightly to examine her, his tone grave. “Did they do anything to you?”
Shen Lai shook her head lightly. “He was just about to… when you all showed up.”
Hearing this, the tension in Pei Jingyan’s expression eased slightly.
Then he noticed a few drops of blood on the floor. Following the trail up Shen Lai’s arm, he realized it was seeping from between her fingers.
Frowning, Pei Jingyan reached out and pried open her hand, only to find a shard of glass clutched tightly in her palm, so tightly that the sharp edge had embedded itself into her flesh.
A shadow of anger flickered in Pei Jingyan’s eyes as he carefully removed the bloodied glass and tossed it aside. Gently patting her shoulder, he murmured, “It’s okay now. No one can hurt you anymore.”
Seeing the sincerity in Pei Jingyan’s expression, Shen Lai’s frantic heart gradually calmed. Perhaps it was the fading of fear and tension, but only now did she belatedly register the pain.
When Huo Chilin rushed in from outside, the first thing he saw was Shen Lai clinging to Pei Jingyan, with Pei Jingyan’s arm wrapped around her waist, comforting her like a child.
Relief washed over Huo Chilin at the sight of Shen Lai unharmed, but it was quickly replaced by a deep sense of loss.
Just then, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a familiar face.
Bai Hansui and the scar-faced man’s group had already been apprehended by the police. Pinned to the ground, their faces were twisted with resentment.
At the sight of Bai Hansui, Huo Chilin frowned. Seeing her restrained by the officers, he quickly pieced together that she was involved in this incident.
Bai Hansui hadn’t noticed Huo Chilin’s arrival, her gaze was fixed venomously on Pei Jingyan and Shen Lai in the distance.
Shen Lai had claimed that she and Pei Jingyan were only in a contractual marriage, but Pei Jingyan’s reaction clearly didn’t suggest indifference.
Realizing she had been deceived, a wave of fury overwhelmed Bai Hansui’s rationality.
Huo Chilin was about to turn away when he heard a sudden commotion behind him. He spun around just in time to see Bai Hansui charging toward Shen Lai, her eyes filled with malice.
Shen Lai remained completely unaware as Pei Jingyan helped her to her feet, her legs feeling weak and unsteady.
Just then, a loud shout came from ahead, “Watch out!”
Hearing the voice, Shen Lai instinctively looked up and saw Bai Hansui charging toward her, a knife clutched in her hand.
The next second, a shadow fell before her.
Almost immediately, Shen Lai heard the sound of the knife slicing through fabric, nearly drowning out a muffled groan.
Shen Lai froze in place, staring blankly at Pei Jingyan, who had shielded her. His shirt was torn by the knife, revealing a long, bloody gash.
Her mind buzzed, completely blank.
Soon, Bai Hansui was pinned to the ground by the arriving police. Struggling in frustration, she roared, “It’s all your fault!”
“If it weren’t for you, how could I have been ruined?!”
“You lied to me, saying you and Pei Jingyan were just business partners, clearly that wasn’t true! You deceitful wretch, I won’t let you off!”
The police quickly dragged Bai Hansui away. As she passed by Huo Chilin, she paused, but before she could speak, she was hauled out of the room.
Throughout this, Huo Chilin didn’t spare her a single glance, his gaze fixed on Shen Lai in the distance.
He instinctively took a step forward but hesitated upon seeing Shen Lai’s pale face as she stared at Pei Jingyan, ultimately deciding against it.
“Pei Jingyan, are you okay?” Shen Lai snapped out of her daze and quickly steadied him. His wound was bleeding profusely, soon staining his shirt sleeve crimson.
Pei Jingyan took a shaky breath. “I’m fine.”
Shen Lai’s heart clenched. How could he be fine after losing so much blood?
An inexplicable panic surged within her. She wanted to check his wound but feared hurting him further, leaving her flustered and unsure of what to do.
Her voice trembled slightly. “Are you stupid? Why did you step in to take the knife for me?”
If Pei Jingyan hadn’t acted on his own, he wouldn’t be suffering like this.
Pei Jingyan looked up at her. Her face was filled with nothing but distress and confusion. He gave a weak smile, his voice barely above a whisper. “Why do you think? For the child in your belly, of course.”
Their eyes locked. For a moment, Shen Lai couldn’t tell if he was being serious. A wave of uncontrollable disappointment spread through every fiber of her being, and the wound on her palm seemed to ache even more.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. Medical staff helped Pei Jingyan into the vehicle, and Shen Lai instinctively moved to follow but was stopped by a nurse.
“What’s your relationship to the patient?”
Shen Lai’s mind was solely focused on Pei Jingyan’s injury. Without thinking, she replied, “I’m his wife.”
The nurse studied Shen Lai’s worried expression and glanced at the injured Pei Jingyan before allowing her onto the ambulance.
The ambulance raced to the hospital, where doctors immediately attended to Pei Jingyan’s wound.
Due to his injury, even removing his jacket was a struggle. When he finally managed to take off his shirt, a deep, bone-grazing gash was revealed on his arm.
Shen Lai’s heart lurched.
If Pei Jingyan hadn’t shielded her, she would be the one sitting here now.
The wound was so deep that stitches were necessary. Pei Jingyan grimaced, occasionally letting out a muffled groan.
Shen Lai’s heart ached at the sight.
After all, Pei Jingyan had ended up like this because of her.
Seeing the cold sweat on Pei Jingyan’s forehead, Shen Lai bit her lip, mustered her courage, and awkwardly extended her hand. “If it hurts, you can squeeze my hand,” she said stiffly.
