Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband - Chapter 103
“Are you okay?”
Wan Shilan’s voice abruptly pulled Shen Lai out of her thoughts.
Shen Lai snapped back to reality and glanced at the phone in her hand, thankfully, it wasn’t damaged. She shook her head.
“What’s wrong with that person? So reckless,” Wan Shilan grumbled. “You’re pregnant, what if something had happened from that collision?”
“Let it go. She probably didn’t mean to.”
Shen Lai looked ahead again, but the staff member was already gone. The familiar figure she had glimpsed earlier lingered in her mind, she felt like she had seen that person somewhere before.
Shen Lai racked her brain but couldn’t recall. Just as she was about to leave, a sudden realization struck her.
She stopped in her tracks and turned around.
Now she knew who that person resembled.
Bai Hansui.
Shen Lai frowned, thinking the idea was absurd.
How could Bai Hansui be here?
Besides, even if Bai Hansui were so desperate for money that she had to work to pay off debts, her pride would never allow her to take a job in a place like this.
Shen Lai figured it was probably just someone with a similar silhouette.
She didn’t dwell on it and went back to memorizing her lines for the afternoon.
Filming lasted until evening before Shen Lai’s scenes were finally done.
As she stepped out of the set, Wu Qi patted her shoulder. “Want to explore the area later?”
Shen Lai had no objections. She glanced at Yan Rui, who was trailing behind them. “What about your boyfriend?”
Wu Qi replied nonchalantly, “He can wait at the hotel.”
Yan Rui raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
Shen Lai teased, “You’re okay with that?”
Wu Qi shrugged. “Well, if only you had brought President Pei along, we could’ve made it a couples’ outing.”
The mention of Pei Jingyan made Shen Lai’s expression falter. She lowered her head and kicked a pebble on the ground, murmuring, “He’s a busy man. No time to accompany me.”
Accompanying someone on set was something real couples did and she and Pei Jingyan weren’t one.
Her previously lighthearted mood suddenly sank. Shen Lai sniffled, forcing down the sour ache in her chest, and looked up at Wu Qi. “Let’s meet at the hotel entrance later, then.”
Wu Qi didn’t notice her shift in mood. “Sure, see you then.”
Shen Lai smiled and nodded, but as soon as Wu Qi walked away, the smile slowly faded from her lips.
Just then, Wan Shilan approached. “Should I take you back to the hotel first?”
Shen Lai nodded. “Sure. I need to use the restroom first.”
Wan Shilan said, “Go ahead. I’ll wait here.”
Shen Lai stopped a staff member to ask for directions to the restroom and headed to the end of the hallway.
After leaving the stall, she walked to the sink to wash her hands. The sound of running water filled the space as she heard the door open behind her.
Assuming it was another staff member, she paid no attention.
A moment later, she turned off the faucet and reached for a paper towel when a sudden realization struck her.
Why was it so quiet after that person entered?
Shen Lai looked up in confusion, only to find Bai Hansui standing behind her.
Shen Lai’s eyes widened. Before she could make a sound, Bai Hansui abruptly covered her mouth with a handkerchief. A pungent, chemical odor flooded her senses.
Shen Lai instinctively struggled, but she could feel her strength draining away. Soon, her entire body went limp.
The resistance grew weaker, and her vision became increasingly blurred.
She didn’t know how much time had passed, but Shen Lai finally couldn’t hold on any longer. She collapsed to the ground, her consciousness fading rapidly.
Before her eyes closed completely, Shen Lai saw Bai Hansui crouch down, staring at her with a cold, venomous gaze.
Wan Shilan leaned against the wall, scrolling through her phone, when suddenly a muffled thud from nearby caught her attention.
She glanced at her watch and realized nearly fifteen minutes had passed, Shen Lai still hadn’t returned.
Hadn’t she just gone to the restroom? Why was she taking so long?
Wan Shilan pocketed her phone and walked toward the end of the hallway. As she turned the corner, she nearly collided with a janitor pushing a cart.
“You scared me!”
Heart still racing, Wan Shilan pressed a hand to her chest. The janitor, hunched over and wearing a cap and mask, looked like an elderly person. She quickly stepped aside to let them pass.
The janitor nodded gratefully and pushed the garbage cart past Wan Shilan, struggling slightly, perhaps due to age.
When Wan Shilan reached the restroom, she pushed open the door to find it eerily silent.
“Shen Lai?”
“Are you done?”
After calling out several times with no response, Wan Shilan frowned and began checking each stall, pushing the doors open one by one.
But after searching every stall, there was no sign of Shen Lai.
Strange.
Where had Shen Lai gone?
Wan Shilan pulled out her phone and dialed Shen Lai’s number. As the call connected, a familiar ringtone echoed from a corner of the restroom.
She turned toward the sound and realized it was coming from beneath the sink.
Following the noise, Wan Shilan bent down and spotted Shen Lai’s phone lying there.
Next to it was a ring.
Wan Shilan recognized it instantly, it was the jewelry Shen Lai had been wearing today.
Her heart sank with an inexplicable unease. Shen Lai wasn’t the type to misplace things like this.
And who would lose both items at once?
Wan Shilan picked up the phone and the ring, then hurried out of the restroom. She stopped a passing staff member and asked, “Excuse me, have you seen Shen Lai?”
The person shook their head.
Wan Shilan searched the set, but after scouring the area and asking around, no one had seen Shen Lai.
It was as if she had vanished into thin air.
The unease in Wan Shilan’s heart grew stronger. Without wasting another moment, she rushed to find the person in charge of the set, determined to check the surveillance footage.
Meanwhile, at the Shen Corporation.
Pei Jingyan was in the middle of a meeting when his phone vibrated on the table.
He glanced sideways at the caller ID, Wan Shilan. His brow twitched slightly.
“Mr. Pei?”
The manager delivering the report noticed Pei Jingyan’s distraction and called out cautiously.
Pei Jingyan looked up. “Continue.”
He reached out and casually ended the call.
But within seconds, the phone buzzed again, this time loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. The attendees exchanged uneasy glances.
Who on earth would dare bombard Pei Jingyan with calls during a meeting?
Pei Jingyan’s frown deepened. Wan Shilan wasn’t one to act without reason. If she was calling this persistently, something urgent must have happened.
At this thought, Pei Jingyan called his assistant over to take over the meeting while he stepped away to answer the phone by the window.
As soon as the call connected, Wan Shilan’s panicked voice came through, “President Pei, something terrible has happened, Miss Shen is in trouble!”
