- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 100 - Plenty of Women
Shen Lai felt a tidal wave of emotions surge within her. Her body stiffened abruptly as she looked at Pei Jingyan in disbelief.
Pei Jingyan realized his slip of the tongue. A flicker of regret flashed between his brows, but his expression remained unreadable as he said, “What I meant was, if I really disliked you that much, I could easily find someone else. There are plenty of women out there willing to become Mrs. Pei.”
Shen Lai’s heart sank with those words, a wave of intense disappointment washing over her.
So that was what Pei Jingyan meant.
She had thought…
“And I’ve already made things clear with her,” Pei Jingyan suddenly spoke up.
Shen Lai looked up, not understanding the implication. “Made things clear? What do you mean?”
Pei Jingyan glanced at her. “Told her I’m not interested.”
Shen Lai froze. “When did you say that?”
Had Yi Xingyu already approached Pei Jingyan?
Sure enough, Pei Jingyan replied, “Tonight.”
Shen Lai took in his still-unchanged suit and the faint scent of alcohol lingering on him, piecing things together. She muttered under her breath, “Wasn’t she the one you poached with a high salary? Aren’t you worried she’ll leave if she’s unhappy?”
Pei Jingyan remained impassive. “If she leaves, she leaves. With money, why worry about not being able to hire capable people?”
His tone was indifferent, as though discussing something trivial. A subtle sweetness flickered in Shen Lai’s chest, though she suppressed the smile tugging at her lips.
Did this mean Pei Jingyan had no feelings for Yi Xingyu at all?
Otherwise, how could he be so utterly unconcerned about her?
Shen Lai’s expression turned awkward. “Did you come here tonight just to say this?”
Pei Jingyan gave her a sidelong glance. “Isn’t it because someone was unhappy, so I came to explain?”
Shen Lai stubbornly refused to admit it. “Who’s unhappy? Don’t slander me.”
Pei Jingyan smirked. “Someone came home with a face so long it could drag on the floor, yet claims they weren’t unhappy.”
Under Pei Jingyan’s teasing gaze, Shen Lai suddenly wanted to ask why he cared whether she was happy or not.
But in the end, she swallowed the question.
She didn’t want to humiliate herself again.
After Pei Jingyan left, Shen Lai lay down on the bed, replaying his words in her mind. Her lips curled uncontrollably, and she hugged her script, rolling around the bed a few times.
Then, remembering the child in her belly, she settled back quietly, staring at the ceiling with an unconscious smile.
The next day, Pei Jingyan arrived at the company. No sooner had he sat down than his office door was knocked.
“Come in.”
He didn’t even look up.
The door opened, followed by the sharp click of high heels against the floor, stopping right in front of his desk.
Pei Jingyan lifted his gaze to see Yi Xingyu standing before him.
His eyes briefly swept over the resignation letter in her hand before he said calmly, “You’ve made your decision?”
Yi Xingyu’s expression was tense. “I only returned to the country for you. Now that you’re married, there’s no reason for me to stay.”
She had expected Pei Jingyan to say something to persuade her to stay, but he merely nodded. “In that case, go to HR to process your resignation.”
Yi Xingyu’s fingers tightened around the letter. “Is that all you have to say to me?”
Pei Jingyan looked at her impassively. “What else do you want me to say?”
The two locked eyes, and in Pei Jingyan’s gaze, Yi Xingyu saw nothing but cold indifference and detachment, as if the resigning employee meant no more to him than any ordinary staff member.
Yi Xingyu let out a bitter laugh. “Pei Jingyan, you’re as heartless as ever. Even when we were abroad, it was the same. I don’t believe you couldn’t tell I had feelings for you.”
She had always thought Pei Jingyan was this cold to everyone, so his allowing her to stay by his side had felt like a special exception.
Until that morning when she saw him with Shen Lai that was when she realized Pei Jingyan wasn’t heartless; his heart simply belonged to someone else long ago.
Pei Jingyan’s tone was indifferent. “You having feelings for me, what does that have to do with me?”
Yi Xingyu’s eyes slowly reddened as she forced a smile. “So you like Shen Lai, don’t you?”
She still clung to a sliver of hope that he would deny it, but this time, Pei Jingyan remained silent.
Finally, Yi Xingyu believed Shen Lai’s claim that Pei Jingyan had proposed marriage to her. If he hadn’t already fallen for her, why would he have taken the initiative to suggest it?
She bit her lower lip so hard it left teeth marks. After a long pause, she spoke, her voice hoarse. “My flight leaves at eight tomorrow morning. Will you see me off?”
Pei Jingyan replied calmly, “Shen Lai is joining the film crew tomorrow. I’m having breakfast with her, so I won’t be able to see you off.”
Yi Xingyu swallowed hard, her throat tight. Slowly, stiffly, she set down her resignation letter, straightened her back, and walked out of the office.
Pei Jingyan picked up the resignation letter, glanced at it, then tossed it into the trash bin beside him.
Just then, his phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, the corner of his lips curled slightly as he swiped to answer.
As soon as the call connected, Shen Lai’s voice came through. “Hey.”
Pei Jingyan leaned back lazily in his chair. “So? You home yet?”
Today was the day Chang Suning was discharged from the hospital, and Shen Lai had gone to pick her up. By his estimate, they should have already arrived at the Shen residence.
The background noise was chaotic, but Shen Lai covered her phone and moved to a quieter spot before whispering, “Did you hire all these servants at home?”
Pei Jingyan replied unhurriedly, “Your mother just got out of the hospital. She needs someone to look after her.”
Shen Lai muttered under her breath, “Even so, isn’t this a bit much?”
Not only were there drivers, nannies, and gardeners, but even specialized household staff, more than the Shen family had employed before their bankruptcy.
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow, teasing, “Is the young miss of the Shen family feeling shy?”
Shen Lai pouted. “I’m just worried about you overspending! Besides, one nanny is enough to take care of my mom.”
Pei Jingyan drawled, “Your mother just left the hospital. Do you really want her to exhaust herself with chores?”
Shen Lai faltered, then heard him add, “And now that we’re married, your parents are my parents too. Taking care of them is only natural.”
At the words “your parents are my parents,” Shen Lai’s ears warmed. Staring at the meticulously maintained garden ahead, she hesitated before saying, “Well… thank you, on behalf of my parents.”
Pei Jingyan’s tone turned playful. “If you really want to thank me, a kiss would be more meaningful.”
Shen Lai flushed crimson. “In your dreams, you pervert!”
She hung up immediately, her cheeks burning all the way down to her neck. Just then, Chang Suning called for her. Snapping out of her daze, she answered and tucked her phone away before returning to her tasks.
Pei Jingyan gazed at the dimmed screen, the corners of his lips curling into a faint smile.
Just then, his secretary knocked and entered. “President Pei, Miss Shen’s agent is here to see you.”
Only then did Pei Jingyan set down his phone, replying lazily, “Let her in.”
Before long, Wan Shilan walked in and softly greeted, “President Pei.”
“What is it?”
Wan Shilan spoke cautiously, “President Pei, the paparazzi contacted me. They said they captured photos of Miss Shen meeting with Young Master Huo a few days ago.”
