- Chapter 63 - Visiting Relatives
First Ring University Town.
The fountain played music, and a red banner stretched across the welcoming gate:
Baoli Xiang Palace Wishes All Residents a Happy New Year!
A sudden slam of the door bang!
Professor Ke closed Archaeology Weekly and took off his glasses. “Xinxin’s back.”
Without waiting for his daughter’s reply, his voice turned stern. “Ke Yuxin, tidy up and come greet our guest.”
Sitting across from Professor Ke was a refined young man in his thirties. “No need to trouble Miss Ke, Professor. You’re too formal.”
“It’s not about being formal. Greeting guests is basic courtesy, it’s the rule.”
Ke Yuxin stood upstairs, glancing down with a cold snort. Dad brought another student home. So annoying.
Every holiday, so-called “respectable” people from the academy would flock to their house like pilgrims to a temple. And now, with rumors spreading that her father was about to be promoted to dean this year, their doorstep was practically worn out from all the visits.
Ke Yuxin cast a disdainful glance at the mountain of New Year gifts piled by the entrance, raising an eyebrow mockingly. I wonder how many of these are actually valuable. Enough to buy a decent piece of jade, maybe?
After a quick shower and change of clothes, she headed downstairs to the living room.
Professor Ke and the young man were admiring the orchids by the floor-to-ceiling window.
“Su Guan He Ding.”
“Oh, impressive, Xiao He! Seems you know a thing or two about orchids as well.”
“You flatter me, Professor. I dabble a little, watering them in my spare time. Oh! This white one, could it be the revered Ghost Orchid? Priceless and nearly impossible to find!”
Ke Yuxin rolled her eyes. Just a bunch of stupid flowers, and he’s laying it on so thick.
The young man suddenly said, “Professor Ke, I’ve taken a liking to this pot of yours. You truly have an eye for treasures, this blue-and-white porcelain must be quite old, right?”
“Not at all, not at all.”
“I wonder if you’d be willing to part with it and let me have it. Judging by the quality, this blue-and-white should be worth at least this much. I didn’t bring enough today, but I’ll transfer the rest later.”
Professor Ke chuckled at the price the young man gestured. “Now you’re the one being too formal. A treasure is priceless when it’s loved. The pot is yours.”
“Thank you, Professor Ke!”
Ke’s mother invited the young man to stay for dinner, but he politely declined and took his leave.
A document folder remained on the coffee table XX Archaeology Project Application, applicant: He XX.
Fifty grand for a fifty-yuan market pot. The rest is just buying his way into the project.
Ke Yuxin had seen countless such exchanges growing up. It was all routine to her.
Ke’s mother called her husband and daughter to the table. “Dinner’s ready.”
As she sat down, she touched the dzi bead necklace around her neck. “Yesterday afternoon, at the deputy mayor’s wife’s tea party, Secretary Yang’s sister gave me this. Lao Ke, what should we give in return?”
Professor Ke pondered for a moment. “Secretary Yang likes paintings, Wu Daozi’s works. Tomorrow, take one from my study for him, and bring a box of yinmu incense for the deputy mayor’s wife.”
Ke’s mother nodded. “Alright, got it.”
Ke Yuxin listlessly picked at her food.
Professor Ke turned to her, his expression darkening.
A storm followed. “Xinxin! Are you still associating with that good-for-nothing Wen girl?!”
Ke Yuxin threw down her chopsticks. “Dad! Stop meddling!”
“Meddling?! What happened in Italy? You dropped out of your music studies to fool around abroad with that Wen girl! Debt collectors chased her debts all the way to our doorstep, and you expect us to clean up her mess?!”
“Ugh, Dad, just drop it!”
“And you dared to sneak onto a dating show behind my and your mother’s backs? Utterly lawless!”
Ke Yuxin’s face was full of irritation. “I’m not going for Wen Huiyun’s sake.”
“Then what are you going for? An omega from the Ke family, parading around outside every day utterly disgraceful!”
“I—” Ke Yuxin was furious and wanted to argue, but suddenly thought of something and abruptly stopped.
“As long as you help me get the last two omega servants, I can offer you a hundred million, plus three raw jade stones for you to pick from. But the omega you mentioned whether she’s pretty enough or fresh enough. I’ll have to inspect her myself. You’ve got two weeks. No extensions.”
The thought of that thug A-Jie made Ke Yuxin sick to her stomach. Even when delivering a deal, she had to spend the night with him first, nearly getting temporarily marked again. A-Jie, that kind of alpha, only did it for the thrill, saying it would wear off in a week anyway. Disgusting.
On the first night of their third date, Ke Yuxin was absent. She lied to Liang Yuan, saying there was an emergency at home and she had to leave.
In reality, she spent the night with A-Jie at some underground club.
–
Wen Huiyun walked into Ye Zhuoyan’s bedroom.
When she first transmigrated into the novel, they had separate rooms. Ye Zhuoyan had installed a door stopper, an alarm, and a surveillance peephole in her bedroom door. Every time Wen Huiyun passed by, her heart raced.
Carefully stepping inside, the alarm didn’t sound, and the indicator light on the peephole remained off.
Wen Huiyun let out a sigh of relief. Walking past the lounge area, she saw a neatly folded pile of clean clothes on the bed, a white nightgown and a silk robe.
Where were the black ones?
Wen Huiyun lifted the folded clothes and spotted the black lace-trimmed satin tie-waist shorts tucked beneath the nightgown.
An uncontrollable tension gripped her as she stared at the sheer, seductive little triangle of fabric, swallowing hard. So Zhuoyan likes this style. Wen Huiyun pinched her fingers. She had assumed it’d be the pure white, frilly kind.
Heh. Take it.
Steps light.
Wife smells so good after her shower.
Wen Huiyun stood outside the bathroom door. The air was thick with humidity, the sweet scents of body wash and pheromones swirling like vanilla syrup.
The silhouette cast on the door was curvaceous and alluring, her long hair swaying as she turned.
Steamy warmth made Wen Huiyun’s throat dry. “Zhuoyan.”
Click. The frosted glass door pushed open from inside, and a misty haze surged out, enveloping her.
The sound of dripping water trickled into her ears.
“Did you bring it?”
Ye Zhuoyan’s brows were beaded with droplets, her smooth, snow-white skin glistening with moisture, exuding a fragrant steam.
She lowered her bright eyes, gaze landing on Wen Huiyun’s hands, and frowned. Just as she was about to speak, a large white towel draped over her head.
“Huh?”
Before Ye Zhuoyan could react, her vision was obscured by the towel, only faint warm light filtering through.
Wen Huiyun wrapped Ye Zhuoyan in the towel, pulling her close, then lifted a corner to cover her head, gently rubbing her damp hair.
“Really.” Ye Zhuoyan glared at her, shaking her head deliberately to flick water droplets onto Wen Huiyun’s face punishment for her mischief.
“Hehe.” Wen Huiyun tightened her arms around Ye Zhuoyan and kissed the corner of her lips.
“I brought them for you.”
Wen Huiyun secured the towel around Ye Zhuoyan, then held up the nightgown, robe, and neatly folded panties. “Your obedient wife has completed her mission.”
Ye Zhuoyan narrowed her eyes, lips curling into a lovely smirk. “So obedient. Then would you like to help me put them on?”
Wen Huiyun lowered her head, her eyes betraying her as they willfully gazed at her wife’s long legs smooth and flawless, glowing with a porcelain sheen.
She nearly reached out to grab the panties.
Hastily, Wen Huiyun said, “I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare. I’ll go prepare some fruit platters and the cucumber tea you love.”
Obediently stepping outside the bathroom, she added, “Turn up the AC a bit, can’t let my wife catch a cold.”
Gently closing the door, she said, “I’ll head downstairs first, ready to answer your call anytime.”
Ye Zhuoyan slipped on her robe and walked forward, her belt untied, the loose front of her garment falling open to reveal soft, luminous skin, the hem of her dress swaying with the movement of her waist and legs.
Wrapping her arms around Wen Huiyun’s neck, Ye Zhuoyan pressed close to her and murmured sweetly, “Huggy, Yunyun.”
“Can I get a kiss as a reward?” Wen Huiyun boldly asked.
Ye Zhuoyan tilted her face up, her eyes shimmering, and cooed, “I’d rather wait till tonight.”
“Mhm, whatever my wife says is right.”
Wen Huiyun gently stroked the hair by her ear, planting a soft kiss on her forehead, and urged her to dress quickly to avoid catching a chill.
Ye Zhuoyan preferred kissing in dimly lit settings.
Omegas are naturally a bit shy.
Wen Huiyun turned on the TV, playing a drama Ye Zhuoyan had starred in, to liven up the otherwise cold and empty house.
She sorted through the safe only the deed to this old house was inside. The rest were missing, and she had no idea where the original owner had stored them. She’d have to cross-reference the property records another day to track them down.
The home’s decor was still chosen by the original owner.
The furniture was cold, hard, and outdated, the walls damp with moisture, the stair steps too high and exhausting to climb.
And those eerie black curtains, drawn shut like a coffin, what kind of taste was that?
Wen Huiyun pulled the curtains open and tied them back, letting the sunlight flood in.
Outside the living room was a garden, barren and overgrown with weeds, a desolate sight that felt especially bleak.
Wen Huiyun sighed, unable to imagine how Ye Zhuoyan had endured these past two years under the original owner’s treatment.
Just thinking about it made her heart ache.
Wen Huiyun clenched the hem of her clothes, her brow tightly furrowed.
Her phone lit up, a call from Mother Wen. Wen Huiyun answered on speaker.
“Mom?”
Three months had passed since transmigrating into this world, and Wen Huiyun could now naturally call Mother Wen “Mom.”
Mother Wen: Yunyun, are you two home yet? Come over with Zhuoyan for dinner tonight. Your dad and I miss you both.
Wen Huiyun had originally planned to visit just before New Year’s Eve, it wasn’t far off, and she wanted to rest at home with Zhuoyan for a bit. But since Mother Wen had called to invite them, they might as well go now.
“Let me check with Yan first, in case she has other plans. Her parents might want to see their daughter too.”
Mother Wen sounded surprised: Yunyun, you’re actually considering Zhuoyan’s feelings now. You’ve really grown so much more thoughtful. Alright, discuss it first. If you’d rather visit her parents first, that’s fine too. Give them our early New Year’s greetings.
“Got it, Mom.”
“Huiyun, was that Auntie on the phone?”
Ye Zhuoyan descended the stairs gracefully, holding the railing.
In the past, her relationship with the original owner had been strained, so she’d always addressed Wen Huiyun’s parents stiffly. Old habits were hard to break.
“Yeah, Yan, Mom said.”
Wen Huiyun’s words trailed off as she became utterly entranced by her wife.
Ye Zhuoyan had changed into a vintage red mermaid dress, the sweetheart neckline accentuating her curves, her slender waist so delicate it seemed you could wrap a hand around it.
She rarely wore bright colors, but the elegant vintage red made her fair skin glow even more radiantly.
Like crimson plum blossoms embracing pure snow.
The high slit in the skirt added a touch of alluring nobility, her long legs peeking through subtly.
Her legs slightly bent, Ye Zhuoyan smoothed her skirt as she sat down, her waist and hips beautifully rounded.
“What did Auntie say?”
Ye Zhuoyan caught Wen Huiyun’s gaze, her voice lilting upward.
“She asked if we—”
Wen Huiyun stopped mid-sentence as Ye Zhuoyan’s slender fingers lifted her chin.
Wen Huiyun remained still, not blinking.
A glimmer shone in Ye Zhuoyan’s eyes. “What were you looking at just now?”
Wen Huiyun’s breathing quickened.
“You.”
Ye Zhuoyan’s long, thick lashes lowered slightly, her eyes soft and alluring as she gazed quietly at Wen Huiyun.
The scent of pheromones intertwined, subtle yet intoxicating.
Ye Zhuoyan smiled faintly. “Praise me?”
Seeing her smile, Wen Huiyun instantly relaxed and returned an even brighter grin.
“Wen Huiyun’s wife is the most beautiful in the world.”
They drove to the Ye family home.
Ye Zhuoyan’s mother had also called, wanting to see her daughter. In the past, Wen Huiyun rarely paid attention to Ye Zhuoyan, never taking her to meet the family except during the New Year, so Ye’s mother had directly asked Ye Zhuoyan to come home.
“I didn’t expect Huiyun to come too, and with so many gifts, you’re too polite,” Ye’s mother said with a beaming smile.
The table was laden with dishes, a lively sight.
Everyone piled food onto Wen Huiyun’s plate, while Wen Huiyun served Ye Zhuoyan.
Ye’s father and mother exchanged a knowing smile.
Ye Zhuoyan’s younger sister, Ye Qimeng, was also there, about to graduate from university after the New Year.
Ye Qimeng was also quite lovely, her face slightly rounder and more youthful than Ye Zhuoyan’s, who had a cooler, more mature elegance.
“Sis, Sis-in-law, I got a call a few days ago, a talent scout said I have great potential and wanted to sign me.”
For some reason, Wen Huiyun recalled the two scam calls Ye Zhuoyan had received earlier and grew wary.
Ye Zhuoyan immediately turned serious. “When was this? What did you say? Show me the call log.”
Ye Qimeng obediently handed over her phone. Ye Zhuoyan blocked the number, warned her to be cautious of scams, and reminded her parents to stay vigilant.
Night fell.
After a long day, exhaustion weighed on both body and mind.
Ye Zhuoyan entered the room and leaned against Wen Huiyun’s shoulder.
“I want to change our whole family’s phone numbers.”
Wen Huiyun wrapped an arm around her. “We’ll report it to the police.”
Ye Zhuoyan nuzzled into the crook of her neck. “I hope they’ll take it seriously. It’s just a few harassing calls, after all.”
“I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
“Mm.” Ye Zhuoyan circled her arms around Wen Huiyun’s waist.
Wen Huiyun kissed Ye Zhuoyan’s forehead, smoothing her long hair as she said softly, “I’ll go heat some milk. Don’t overthink it drink up and get some rest first, okay?”
Ye Zhuoyan nodded, holding onto her hand for a long moment before letting go.
Wen Huiyun kissed the back of her hand and headed to the kitchen.
Receiving so many harassing calls out of the blue was strange.
Wen Huiyun sank into thought.
The original novel’s plot never mentioned the female lead’s family getting harassing calls. Later in the story, the dangers she faced all came from the male lead’s enemies.
What was going on with these calls? Could it be Ke Yuxin?
But Ke Yuxin already had control over her and Ye Zhuoyan through the secret marriage and the so-called compromising photos, what purpose would these calls serve?
Regardless, Ke Yuxin was highly suspect and needed to be watched closely.
Wen Huiyun was exhausted, and her head began to ache after thinking for a while. She massaged her temples, she’d go to the police first thing in the morning.
Once she gathered enough evidence, she’d send Ke Yuxin straight to where she belonged.
The overhead light in the bedroom was off.
A candle-shaped nightlight glowed dimly by the bed, casting a hazy glow.
Ye Zhuoyan reclined against the headboard, flipping through a book, the neon lights outside the window painting the room in shifting colors.
Wen Huiyun set down the milk quietly, bent down, and pressed a kiss to her lips.
Wen Huiyun’s heart ached for Ye Zhuoyan, worried that her identical face to the original owner might still frighten her, concerned that intimate contact might trigger humiliating memories. So, she was always careful, gentle, and slow.
Ye Zhuoyan exhaled a fragrant, warm breath, tilting her head back with the light pressure of Wen Huiyun’s kiss, revealing her snow-white swan-like neck.
Her delicate shoulders relaxed, collarbones shifting subtly beneath the skin, the thin straps of her dress clinging to her luminous skin.
With one arm wrapped around Ye Zhuoyan, Wen Huiyun handed her a cup. “I’ve tested it, not too hot.”
Ye Zhuoyan took a sip, gazing at her with sparkling eyes:
“It’s nighttime.”
She licked the milk from the corner of her lips.
