Wen Huiyun held Ye Zhuoyan close, taking a few steps while nibbling on her lips.
Ye Zhuoyan gasped softly and pushed her away. Wen Huiyun loosened her grip slightly, resting her forehead against Ye Zhuoyan’s as they both caught their breath.
“Hah…”
Ye Zhuoyan felt something pressing uncomfortably against her chest from Wen Huiyun’s clothes. She flipped open the collar to check, the outer layer was smooth, but inside the hidden inner pocket, there was something hard.
“This jacket is from before.”
Ye Zhuoyan folded the corner of the jacket with the inner pocket and unzipped it.
Wen Huiyun followed her movement, shrugging off the sleeve of the jacket. “Brought it from home.”
After transmigrating, Wen Huiyun had bought many new things, but she kept the original owner’s belongings if they were still usable.
This jacket was one of the few minimalist pieces in the original owner’s wardrobe, so Wen Huiyun thought it was fine to wear.
As the inner pocket was unzipped, Ye Zhuoyan pulled out a smooth, warm disc that had been heated by body warmth, a jade pendant.
White and flawless, round and translucent.
Carved with the character “Xin,” it had golden tassels hanging from the bottom.
Ke Yuxin was obsessed with antiques, especially jade, so it wasn’t surprising that she’d given a fine piece to the original owner as a token of affection.
Ye Zhuoyan arched a delicate eyebrow and slapped the pendant back into Wen Huiyun’s arms.
“Oh, a love token.”
“Carrying it around, afraid of losing it? Keep it safe.”
This was the first time Wen Huiyun had worn this jacket, she’d only grabbed it because her other clothes were still at the cleaners.
“I just put this on today.”
Wen Huiyun tightened her hold on Ye Zhuoyan, not letting her leave, and held up the pendant for her to see. “Watch this.”
She raised her arm high and flung the pendant with force.
The jade traced a parabola through the air before plunging into the lake with a plop.
A few ripples spread, then vanished.
In those brief two seconds, Ye Zhuoyan felt something in her heart shatter through a window and take flight.
“You’re really willing to throw it away. Such a beautiful piece of jade.”
Though her eyes sparkled with amusement, Ye Zhuoyan still teased her.
Wen Huiyun slung an arm around Ye Zhuoyan’s shoulders and leaned against the railing of Sansheng Bridge. “Then, should you throw me in too?”
As she spoke, she made a move to climb over the railing.
“Stop fooling around.”
Ye Zhuoyan grabbed her and pulled her back. Wen Huiyun, in turn, cupped Ye Zhuoyan’s chin and captured her soft lips in a deep, demanding kiss.
The lake shimmered, the breeze stirring gentle waves that lapped softly, mingling with the muffled sounds of their passionate kisses.
Morning light spilled across the water, glinting like scattered stars.
Behind a tree near the bridge, a figure lurked.
Her nails dug deep into the bark, her fingers coated in wood dust.
Ke Yuxin’s eyes burned with hatred, the overlapping shadows of the leaves above casting a cold, murky gloom over her face.
No amount of morning brightness could dispel the darkness in her gaze.
She bit her lip, her breathing heavy like a burdened climber.
Wen Huiyun!
How dare you throw the jade I gave you into the lake right in front of Ye Zhuoyan!
Have you forgotten how you begged me back then, you stupid mutt?
That was proof of our first night together, you even carved my name on it!
Hah! Hah!
Just you wait, Wen Huiyun! I’ll make you pay!
Neither you nor Ye Zhuoyan will get away with this!
–
“You’re back.” Liang Yuan glanced up.
Wen Huiyun walked in, Ye Zhuoyan’s hand still in her pocket, but she quickly pulled it out when she heard Liang Yuan’s voice.
A slightly bitter aroma of herbal soup wafted from the kitchen.
Wen Huiyun: “Making soup?”
“Added some herbs to warm the stomach.”
Liang Yuan sat at the dining table, sorting vegetables. “Yuxin came back from her morning workout saying her limbs were cold. Since Laba Festival is coming up, I thought I’d make something nourishing for everyone.”
Ke Yuxin went for a morning workout? She went out this morning?
Wen Huiyun took off her coat, she would pick up the laundry later and wouldn’t wear this one again.
Ye Zhuoyan helped Liang Yuan with the vegetable basket. “Thank you, Sister Liang, for making soup for us.”
“You’re welcome.”
Wen Huiyun asked her, “Do you still need my help, Sister Liang? It looks like you’ve already prepared lunch.”
Liang Yuan smiled. “No need. Yuxin said she’d come help me in a bit.
“You’re usually the one handling all three meals a day. Take a break today, let us handle it.”
“Oh!”
Wen Huiyun paused, then said, “Alright, thank you, Sister Liang.”
Liang Yuan’s eyes curved. “You’re all being so polite today.”
She lowered her head and continued sorting the vegetables.
Ye Zhuoyan carried the coat upstairs, and Wen Huiyun followed.
They stopped by the ventilation shaft.
Ye Zhuoyan spoke softly, “Has Sister Liang been getting closer to Ke Yuxin?”
Wen Huiyun thought back to Liang Yuan mentioning Mi Tao earlier and couldn’t help but frown. “Seems like it.”
It didn’t sit right with her.
In the show, it was Liang Yuan’s freedom to choose or reject whomever she wanted. Matters of the heart were personal, no one had the right to judge her from a moral high ground.
If it were anyone else, Wen Huiyun wouldn’t have given it much thought.
But that person was Ke Yuxin.
Didn’t people who hung out with Ke Yuxin know what she was really like?
Some genuinely didn’t.
Her theatrics, her cutesy act to some, especially alphas were just little tricks to draw them in, and some fell for it.
Her feigned vulnerability, to some, came off as delicate, stirring their protective instincts.
And Ke Yuxin had one advantage.
One that the original host had valued highly.
She doubted she was the only one who felt that way.
During Ke Yuxin’s first few days at Lianlian Mansion.
Casual chat during free time.
“Everyone’s profiles are public. What do you all do?” Mi Tao asked.
Gu Rufeng said, “I’ve written some songs and run a small studio.”
Wen Huiyun had looked up her stage name, she was a rising star in music, topping charts, with high praise from industry veterans.
Quite humble, keeping a low profile.
Ke Yuxin smiled sweetly. “What a coincidence, I’m also in music. But I work in music education.”
Liang Yuan asked, “Education? Xinxin, are you a music teacher?”
“Sister Yuan is so smart! I teach violin.
“Currently at the A Music Affiliated High School.
“My students are all so adorable~”
Wen Huiyun stayed silent.
Ye Zhuoyan didn’t say a word.
Comments:
[My daughter goes to A Music Affiliated High School, thank goodness she studies piano.]
[Damn, my son’s learning violin, I’m transferring him out!]
Liang Yuan perked up at the mention of A Music Affiliated High School. “The main campus on Huaixiang Street? That’s near where I work.”
“Really?”
Ke Yuxin brightened. “Is it A City Second Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital?”
Liang Yuan’s smile faded slightly.
“No.”
Ke Yuxin chuckled and didn’t press further.
After a few more words, she casually added, “Getting a permanent position is tough, but talent shines anywhere.”
Wen Huiyun recalled that besides the Second TCM Hospital, there were many private TCM clinics on Huaixiang Street.
Later, the conversation turned to family.
Ke Yuxin: “My whole family’s in education.
“Mom and Dad? Yeah, they both teach at A University.
“My dad’s a professor, specializing in history and archaeology. In a couple of years, he’ll be promoted to dean.”
She rambled on.
Ke Yuxin spoke casually, but every word was calculated.
“Uncle Zhao from the medical school is really close with my dad, he also holds a position at the Health Commission.
“Giggle~ Sure, if any of you need help, just ask.
“I’m not particularly talented besides playing a bit of violin, but I have lots of friends, and all the elders I know adore me.”
The conversation gradually turned into Ke Yuxin’s solo show.
Wen Huiyun was getting tired of listening.
In the original host’s memories, Ke Yuxin always loved to show off under the guise of being unintentional.
What the original host admired about her was her scholarly family background.
“Pure and noble.” A rather ironic taste.
