- Chapter 44.1 - Love Song
The third floor of the mansion was unlit, the staircase leading up from the second floor shrouded in darkness, with only the edges of the first two steps catching a faint glimmer of light.
Ye Zhuoyan glanced at the time 10:20 and exchanged a brief look with Mi Tao, who was brushing her teeth, before stepping onto the stairs.
The third floor was even darker. For some inexplicable reason, Ye Zhuoyan didn’t turn on the lights, instead moving forward slowly by memory until she stopped outside the activity room where they had watched a movie last time.
The door wasn’t fully closed, and a sliver of warm light spilled out, painting a golden line on the floor.
A mischievous thought crossed Ye Zhuoyan’s mind as she smirked.
Knock knock. She rapped on the door, then quickly pressed herself against the wall behind it.
The door opened from the inside, and someone peeked out, looking left and right with a puzzled hum before closing it again.
Ye Zhuoyan grinned triumphantly and repeated the trick. This time, the person inside didn’t retreat but instead circled around the door to drag her out.
“Hey, hey!” Ye Zhuoyan tiptoed and hopped twice before being pulled into the activity room by the grip on her wrist.
Bang. The door shut.
Click. It even locked.
“Teasing me, huh? First, you’re punished!” As she spoke, Wen Huiyun rummaged around the room and picked up a mug from the table.
“Drink a cup of hot chocolate milk.”
Ye Zhuoyan sat on the beanbag she’d used last time, hugging the mug and giggling to herself.
“Just a little dark chocolate, slightly bitter. I’ve already calculated the calories.”
Ye Zhuoyan gulped it down. “I don’t care. I don’t want to count calories. You’re all bullying me.”
Wen Huiyun feigned anger. “Who dares bully you?”
Ye Zhuoyan shot her a sullen glance and huffed, “Your little helper won’t let me eat anything but cabbage not even a single piece of fish.”
Hah, Jiang Yining could actually be reliable sometimes.
When it came to tormenting people, that is.
“Hmm?” Ye Zhuoyan lowered the mug slightly, a thought occurring to her. “This chocolate, it wouldn’t happen to be.”
“Italian Belgian chocolate.”
Pfft. Ye Zhuoyan burst out laughing.
If Ke Yuxin had known in the past that Wen Huiyun used the chocolates she’d gifted to make milk for Ye Zhuoyan, she’d have been furious.
Wen Huiyun picked up an instrument leaning against the wall. “Zhuoyan, I called you here to show you this.”
“I borrowed an electric guitar from Rufeng.”
“And learned a simple riff from her.”
Ye Zhuoyan watched as she held the guitar with practiced ease, tuning it and plucking the strings.
“You learned it that fast!”
Wen Huiyun’s movements were still a little stiff, but the melody was simple just stringing the notes together made it recognizable.
“Yeah, it’s not hard. When you have time, practice with me, okay? You can tell me if I’m improving.”
She’d also asked Gu Rufeng to help pick out a guitar for her, which would arrive in a few days.
Ye Zhuoyan set the mug down. “Sure.”
A ring of chocolate milk foam clung to her lips.
Wen Huiyun hummed softly along with the simple melody. “The stars’ candy, the roses of dreams, all for you.”
She glanced up slowly and saw Ye Zhuoyan leaning against her, arms resting on her knees, lost in thought.
With that ring of foam around her mouth.
Wen Huiyun plucked the guitar strings intermittently and asked softly, “Was the chocolate milk good?”
Ye Zhuoyan nodded.
“I haven’t tried it yet. What does it taste like?”
Ye Zhuoyan picked up the mug, but the remnants clinging to the sides couldn’t even form a single drop.
She’d slurped it all up.
“Maybe you could make another,”
—cup?
Ye Zhuoyan held her breath as Wen Huiyun’s warm exhale brushed against her lips, her tongue slick and quick, tracing a light circle around her mouth.
The milk paste was licked clean, and Wen Huiyun was still savoring the taste with her lips slightly pursed.
Ye Zhuoyan’s mind was filled with the amplified sound of her own heartbeat, the edges of her lips still damp and warm from the lingering heat of another body.
Wen Huiyun softly sang, “And I want to be your fox, the B52 asteroid orbiting around you.”
Ye Zhuoyan glanced sideways, an indescribable tension winding between them, as if they were bound together by invisible, sticky threads.
The electric guitar and the youthful humming intertwined like a dreamcatcher, gently ensnaring Ye Zhuoyan in its tender embrace.
She couldn’t bear to break this moment of sweet tenderness.
The words “You stole a bite” lingered on her tongue but never left her lips.
A day earlier, she had received the test report from Su He.
The number 99.99% was seared into Ye Zhuoyan’s eyes.
From that day on, she knew Wen Huiyun’s secret.
And she was willing to keep it for her.
She wanted to walk this path with Wen Huiyun whether she was an alpha or not didn’t matter.
Ye Zhuoyan narrowed her eyes as Wen Huiyun’s hair cascaded down, her fingers plucking the guitar strings one by one.
A fox?
If you steal a bite, I’ll catch you by your big tail and hang you up. Hmm.
Spanking o(////v////)
Mi Tao packed up her things to make room for her new roommate.
Ke Yuxin came back upstairs with a dark expression.
“Yuxin, what’s wrong? You don’t look happy.”
Ke Yuxin ignored her. After standing there awkwardly for two seconds, Mi Tao decided not to press further.
Ke Yuxin sat at the vanity, fiddling with bottles and jars.
Many of the cosmetics had been bought for her by Wen Huiyun in the past mostly limited editions, even high-end custom pieces from Northern Europe.
“…” Seeing them only made her angrier.
Damn it, Wen Huiyun must have had her brain squeezed by a nutcracker, how could she use the chocolate she bought to make milk for Ye Zhuoyan?!
That was the same chocolate she and Wen Huiyun used to share. How could Wen Huiyun give it to Ye Zhuoyan?!
Ke Yuxin clenched her powder puff, the delicate little thing nearly crushed in her grip.
Her mother’s call came through, but Ke Yuxin declined and switched to texting instead.
She glanced at Mi Tao, who was lying on the bed scrolling through her phone, not wanting to reveal private details over a call.
Mom: Xinxin, how are things at the show? I watched the first few episodes and think Cheng Xiaoming is quite nice.
Ke Yuxin: I haven’t paid attention. Mom, I’m running low on allowance.
Her mother transferred money to her: You should still be frugal. With the recent push for integrity, your dad and I have had a lot less income.
Cheng Xiaoming is nice?
Ke Yuxin hadn’t watched the dating show, only catching glimpses of Wen Huiyun in the clips.
How nice could he be?
Since she was here, she might as well get something out of it.
Catching Mi Tao’s reflection in the mirror, Ke Yuxin curved her lips into a smile.
“Taotao.”
Mi Tao looked up from her phone.
Ke Yuxin combed her hair and said, “Sorry about earlier my stomach was hurting.”
Mi Tao relaxed and sat up. “Oh? Are you okay? Sister Yuan has some medicine. I can go get some for you.”
Ke Yuxin quickly waved it off. “No need, it’s an old issue. It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
She then said that since she was new, she wasn’t familiar with everyone and wanted to ask about the alpha participants, what they were like, who got along with whom so she could avoid stepping on anyone’s toes.
“Sister Yunyun is warm and gentle, good to everyone. She’s an amazing cook.”
“Sister Ming is a bit lost in her own world hard to explain, but you’ll understand once you spend more time with her. Still, she’s very generous.”
“Sister Yuan is really good at taking care of others and knows a lot. She’s just great all around.”
