- Chapter 43.1 - Welcoming the New
The alpha gathering alone must mean the production team has special arrangements.
Last time when alphas and omegas were separated, it was to announce the dating rules. Who knows what the purpose is this time.
The front door is left open, with damp marks from sleet on the carpet.
Even sitting deep inside the living room, Ye Zhuoyan could feel the biting cold from the draft.
“It’s cold outside. Stay warm.”
Ye Zhuoyan took off her scarf and looped it over Wen Huiyun’s head, wrapping it snugly around her neck.
The scarf was incredibly soft woven from alpaca wool, just brushing against the skin brought warmth.
Ye Zhuoyan’s younger sister had traveled to Peru last year and bought one for everyone in the family from an alpaca ranch.
Back then, Ye Qimeng had called Ye Zhuoyan to ask which color she liked, adding, “Sister-in-law treats you poorly, so I don’t consider her family. I’m not buying her one.”
Because she didn’t buy one for sister-in-law, now her most beloved sister’s scarf was wrapped around sister-in-law.
Ye Zhuoyan adjusted Wen Huiyun’s collar, smiling up at her.
“Thank you.” Wen Huiyun lowered her head, pressing a light kiss to Ye Zhuoyan’s cheek. “I’m heading out.”
Cheng Xiaoming and Liang Yuan were already in the car, waiting for her in the garden square.
Jiang Yining teased Mi Tao, “Tsk tsk, see that? Taozi, you can’t learn from your Sister Zhuoyan, so clingy.”
“I’m getting diabetes from this. I need some lemon to sober up.”
Goosebumps rose on her arms.
She bolted~
Mi Tao’s honest little brain hadn’t quite processed what just happened as she munched on chips. “Huh? But it was so sweet!”
No one ever wrapped a scarf around her neck.
“Ahhh, since they’re all gone today, how about the three of us make hotpot?”
Jiang Yining peeked around before pulling out an electric hotpot.
Mi Tao cheered, “Yes! I want spicy beef and lamb rolls!”
Ye Zhuoyan was about to speak.
Jiang Yining pointed at her. “You’re on veggies. Wen Huiyun told me to keep an eye on you, no greasy meat, no high-carb, no sugar.”
Ye Zhuoyan drooped her head. Goodbye, cheese rice cakes.
Steam rose from the bubbling hotpot, fogging up the glass of the open kitchen.
Next to the fridge were Polaroids of the six guests.
A photo of Wen Huiyun and Ye Zhuoyan making dumplings at Li’s, a shot Jiang Yining took of Cheng Xiaoming wiping out on the ski slopes.
Liang Yuan posing at a museum, Mi Tao hugging a Shiba Inu at a café, grinning at the camera.
“How long have we been here?”
“Almost two months.”
“Mmm, this is good. Taozi, have more.”
“Sister Yining, you have some too! The beef is so good! Sister Zhuoyan, here’s some bok choy for you.”
Ye Zhuoyan picked up her chopsticks. “Can I at least have the sliced fish? Fish is protein.”
“By that logic, beef should be fine too.”
“Stop giving me more bok choy!”
Mi Tao swiftly swapped the beef for konjac noodles, plopping them into Ye Zhuoyan’s bowl. “Then try this instead high fiber, hehe!”
“Eek!”
Jiang Yining even stole her fish slices. “Haha! Taozi, hold her down. Ye Zhuoyan’s already over her meat quota today. Later, we’ll have some half-baked cheesecake just to tease her.”
“Jiang Yining! I won’t leave the door unlocked for you tonight.”
They shared a room.
Jiang Yining wasn’t scared. “Then I’ll sleep with Taozi. Right, Taotao~”
Mi Tao raised both hands. “Sister Ning, fly into my bed!”
A cold draft slipped in through the front door, stark against the lively atmosphere.
Outside, the rain grew heavier.
A wet trail streaked across the carpet, and a meteor-gray alien-shaped suitcase leaned quietly by the shoe cabinet.
Ye Zhuoyan turned to glance at the front door. “Did the door just open?”
Jiang Yining and Mi Tao followed her gaze. “They wouldn’t be back this early. Is it the production crew?”
A young woman in a black leather jacket walked in, carrying a guitar case on her back.
The hoodie she wore had a skull half-covered by a blue morpho butterfly printed on the chest.
Her pants and boots were studded with small spikes, glinting coldly under the light.
The three omega guests looked surprised. Who was this?
The woman lifted her head, scanning the living room as rainwater dripped from her hood.
“Hello,” she said, her voice cool and crisp, like ice clinking in a cocktail shaker.
Ye Zhuoyan gave a slight nod. “Hello.”
Jiang Yining sprang up from her chair excitedly, calling out loudly, “Hey, girl! Who are you?”
“Gu Rufeng.”
Before the words had fully left her mouth, a dark shadow darted past her legs into the living room.
“Woof woof!”
A deep, resonant bark echoed through the room, carrying the untamed energy of a fierce breed.
Jiang Yining skidded to a halt beside the coffee table.
Ye Zhuoyan blinked, instinctively retreating into the corner.
“Come back, Baru.”
Gu Rufeng tightened her grip on the leash, restraining a muscular Doberman.
The AI broadcast announced: “Welcome our fourth alpha guest, Gu Rufeng.”
A new guest? The fourth alpha?
“Little Doberman!” Mi Tao cheerfully ran over, only for Baru to bark at her.
Mi Tao froze, asking Gu Rufeng, “Will it bite me?”
Gu Rufeng lowered her gaze, studying Mi Tao for a moment before pinching Baru’s muzzle shut. “If he’s in a bad mood, yes.”
Ye Zhuoyan: “…”
Jiang Yining: “Looks like he’s in a bad mood right now.”
Gu Rufeng pulled her suitcase into the living room.
Ye Zhuoyan asked politely, “Have you eaten yet? Would you like to join us for hot pot?”
Gu Rufeng tied the dog to a spot in the living room and took a seat at the far edge. “Thanks.”
She glanced around and asked, “Am I the only alpha here?”
Mi Tao set out utensils for her. “There are three other alphas, but they were all sent to the bar.”
Ye Zhuoyan lowered her eyes, pressing her lips to the rim of her glass.
At the bar, the fourth omega must have arrived by now.
The weather forecast in the car had warned that temperatures would drop below freezing tonight due to a cold front.
The moment she stepped out of the car, wind and rain howled around her.
Wen Huiyun exhaled into her scarf, wrapping herself tighter in its warmth.
The bar door swung open from the inside. The decorative frame above it hung a little low, brushing against her hair as she passed through.
Cheng Xiaoming walked ahead, blocking her view. It wasn’t until she and Liang Yuan settled along the bar that Wen Huiyun noticed the omega perched on a barstool.
The star lights strung across the liquor cabinet cast fragmented, swaying glimmers over the omega.
The speakers played an ambiguous melody, blending with the scent of alcohol and other fragrances diffusing through every corner.
The omega turned slowly bright eyes, pearly teeth, a sweet and innocent smile.
Golden strands of hair fell loosely, enhancing the delicate fragility of her youthful face.
The omega waved cheerfully, her voice as sweet as strawberries atop a cream cake.
“Hi everyone, I’m Ke Yuxin. Just got back from Italy and brought some small gifts for you.”
Layer upon layer of ruffled skirts cascaded down, her white dress shimmering with pearl-like luster under the chandelier.
She placed three pieces of chocolate on the bar counter.
“This is from a very famous handmade shop in Milan. The aroma is rich and mellow, I hope you all like it.”
Ke Yuxin smiled, making eye contact with each alpha guest.
When her gaze landed on Wen Huiyun, she leaned in slightly, curling her lips. “Maybe some sisters here have even tasted it before.”
Wen Huiyun ignored her and walked to the farthest stool to sit down.
Liang Yuan unwrapped the chocolate and inhaled the cocoa scent.
“It really is rich and fragrant. Thank you.”
Ke Yuxin beamed. “I’m so happy you like it, sister.”
Liang Yuan was momentarily dazed, unable to tear her eyes away from the girl’s pure, delicate face.
Cheng Xiaoming glanced at the chocolate but didn’t touch it.
The chocolate was indeed bought in Italy, and the product description was in Italian but the production address said Belgium.
Maybe that famous handmade shop was located in a duty-free zone. There was even an airport shop label on it.
Wen Huiyun quietly tucked the chocolate into her bag.
She’d make hot chocolate milk for Zhuoyan tonight.
Ke Yuxin asked, “Aren’t these two sisters going to try some?”
Wen Huiyun replied, “We’re about the same age. I’d prefer to stay young.”
So don’t call me “sister.”
Ke Yuxin blinked, the light in her big eyes flickering.
She looked a little surprised but quickly masked her hurt expression. “Oh, okay. Then how should I address you?”
“Wen Huiyun.”
Her tone was frosty.
“Hello, I’m Liang Yuan.”
“Cheng Xiaoming.”
Might as well get it all out of the way.
