- Chapter 42.1 - Is Cloud
Su He and Ye Zhuoyan were high school desk mates, and their shared habit of dozing off in class forged a revolutionary friendship, Su He would sleep while Ye Zhuoyan kept watch.
The alpha identity for the robotics competition was borrowed from her.
“What if you fall asleep while performing surgery on a patient?” Ye Zhuoyan had asked when she learned Su He had rebelliously chosen to study medicine instead of joining the Su family business.
Su He rolled her eyes. “I’m studying lab diagnostics, not surgery.”
As for why lab diagnostics? Su He said it was because she’d have to interact with fewer people and wouldn’t have to talk much.
At seven in the morning, the genetic testing facility was still mostly empty.
The floors gleamed from recent mopping, the air conditioning was set to a comfortable temperature, and a faint antiseptic scent lingered in the air.
“What are you doing here?”
Su He had a claw clip holding her hair at the back of her head, her collar slightly loose, and her white lab coat unbuttoned. Her lazy, peach-blossom eyes, slightly upturned at the corners, carried a cool, alluring charm.
She knew Ye Zhuoyan was filming a variety show and had told her to mail the samples over. She hadn’t expected her to come in person.
Ye Zhuoyan handed her the items, dark circles under her eyes. “Couldn’t mail them.”
Bullshit. It was just a few strands of hair and a tube of saliva, what was so difficult about that?
“Wow, still not sleeping well? That worried, huh?” Su He called over the head of the lab and handed her the samples, nudging Ye Zhuoyan’s arm. “Let’s go downstairs. I’ll treat you to the staff cafeteria.”
The meal was simple plain congee and side dishes. Ye Zhuoyan only ate a boiled egg, tossing the yolk to Su He.
“……” Su He had the kitchen specially prepare a plate of shrimp for her.
“Eat up. Protein.”
The cafeteria gradually filled with people, the murmur of conversation a low hum.
Ye Zhuoyan picked at the shrimp with her chopsticks, checking her phone twice. Wen Huiyun had texted asking if she’d finished her errands, when she’d be back, and what she wanted for lunch.
She hadn’t replied yet.
Su He meticulously picked out every shred of carrot from her steamed bun.
Watching her pluck out each strand one by one, Ye Zhuoyan frowned. “How long until we get the results?”
“What’s the rush? At least seven days. Why not take a seven-day mental vacation?”
Su He could go three days without speaking, but once she started, she’d talk for three days straight.
“Aren’t you getting divorced? Could that Wen guy have a secret love child out there? And you’re still not divorcing? Why didn’t you bring the kid’s sample? Ugh, reminds me of my uncle.”
“Speaking of my uncle gives me a headache. Got some girl from the Cheng family pregnant, drove his ex-wife to hang herself, then abandoned the kid. Last month, the old man was on his deathbed, wanting to see my cousin, the one he shipped off abroad when she was just a few years old. No word from her in all these years, no idea if she’s even alive. What a mess.”
Every family has its own drama.
Ye Zhuoyan’s ears buzzed. Only Su He would air her family’s dirty laundry so casually.
She had no interest in these wealthy family scandals, who knew when the Su or Cheng families might decide to silence her for knowing too much? =_=
“What’s gotten into you today? Did you eat duck tongues or something?”
And now she was jumping to secret love children? Without even asking why she needed the test, she was spinning wild theories, each more outrageous than the last.
“Gossiping is my one little hobby, don’t lecture me. Fine, go do your thing. I’ll send you the results when they’re ready.”
“Call me. I’ll come get them.”
Su He, severely nearsighted and wearing silver-framed glasses, squinted.
“Ye Zhuoyan, why are you so tense?”
“You know why you can’t get a girlfriend?”
“Huh?”
“Don’t apply your gossipy logic to me.” Ye Zhuoyan smirked, picking up the discarded carrot strands and stuffing them back into Su He’s now meat-only bun.
“Otherwise, our revolutionary friendship is over.”
Su He quickly guarded the beef filling, “……”
Su He was a gossip at heart, but she was tight-lipped and reliable. With so many years of friendship, Ye Zhuoyan trusted her completely.
Su He also trusted Ye Zhuoyan, otherwise she wouldn’t have shared all her family gossip with her.
“Wait, before you go, sign a few autographs for me. I have some interns who are your fans.”
Ye Zhuoyan was surprised, “I have fans here?”
“Yeah, and they’re CP fans yours and Wen Huiyun’s.”
Ye Zhuoyan smiled and signed the interns’ white coats.
Su He said, “I still want to remind you. Few people know about your secret marriage, but that doesn’t mean it won’t leak. You’re both on a dating show now, so be extra careful.”
“Mm.”
Ye Zhuoyan didn’t reply to Wen Huiyun’s messages until she left the testing facility.
The contact labeled “Wen Scum A” had sent two messages: [Photo 1 of fitness meal][Photo 2 of fitness meal]. Which one does my wife prefer?
Ye Zhuoyan lowered her eyes as the cold wind brushed her face.
The unexpected blows came one after another, leaving her breathless. The images of needles piercing her skin and the memory of tender kisses and caresses alternated in her mind, lingering relentlessly.
Her face was cold, but her chest burned.
Had the missing Wen Huiyun really returned?
Was it just brain damage, or was it that her consciousness and body weren’t even the same person anymore?
Who was she?
Wen Scum A: Zhuoyan? Still busy? Do you need my help?
Ye Zhuoyan stared at the words on the screen. The memory of their embrace on Christmas Eve was vivid, Wen Huiyun holding her, wanting to squeeze tight but afraid of hurting her, tenderness filled with contradiction.
Yet it was precisely that contradiction that made Ye Zhuoyan’s heart swell, lifting her arms to hug back tightly.
I was just chatting with a friend. I like both options make whichever one you prefer for me =^ω^=
Ye Zhuoyan replied.
Then she changed the contact name from “Wen Scum A” to “Yun.”
The screen went dark, and the white clouds in the sky reflected on its black surface.
Yun, just Yun. Free, untethered, pure, and radiant.
Wherever she went, Yun would accompany her.
No need for any constraints that was Yun.
The car stopped, and as the door opened, the morning sunlight shone on Ye Zhuoyan’s back.
Someone had once told her to start thinking for herself from now on, to learn how to love herself, to choose what she liked and that person would always support her.
She would do it.
Su He was right, it was time to give her heart a break.
After several rounds of comparison, the head of the testing department still couldn’t believe the results.
“What’s wrong?”
“Director Su, look.”
Su He leaned over the desk to examine the screen. The genetic match rate was 99.999.%.
“This Director Su, can the DNA segments of the same person have discrepancies?” The testing director was starting to doubt his own knowledge.
Su He frowned and took over the controls. “All interference ruled out?”
“We’ve cross-checked multiple times.”
“Where’s the discrepancy?”
“The gonads.”
Su He pulled up the gland analysis data.
Undifferentiated?!
Pfft, no wonder Ye Zhuoyan ignored her when she mentioned a love child, a fake Alpha.
Wait, wasn’t this even weirder?!
Wen Huiyun’s previous DNA was unmistakably that of a genuine Alpha!
The Love Manor, quiet for days, was lively again.
“Sisters, I’m back!”
“Peach, slow down wash your hands first.”
“Got it, Sister Yuan! Wow! Sister Yining, why did you bring so much stuff?”
“Presents for all of you!”
“We also brought fresh corn and sweet potatoes for everyone! Hahaha, Sister Yining, these gifts must have been paid for by Sister Mingming, right?”
“Peach, you guessed right. I was the one who paid.”
Farm A was quite far, so Mi Tao and Liang Yuan returned later than the others.
Mi Tao went straight to bed as soon as she got home. Ye Zhuoyan had left early in the morning and hadn’t returned yet, while Jiang Yining was trying out some high-end skincare products that she claimed were a gift from CEO Cheng.
Cheng Xiaoming noticed Liang Yuan sitting in the dining room chatting with Wen Huiyun and asked, “Aren’t you going to catch up on sleep?”
“I slept a bit on the high-speed train, so I’m not tired right now.”
“Where did you go? You all seem exhausted.”
Wen Huiyun opened the box Mi Tao had brought back. “Wow, these vegetables are top quality! And there are goose eggs too!”
Round and plump, they carried the fresh scent of life. “So fresh.”
Liang Yuan leaned against the back of a nearby chair, her smile tinged with helplessness. “Huiyun, I think you and Peach would’ve been a better match for this outing.”
Cheng Xiaoming frowned at the comment, and Wen Huiyun also felt uneasy.
“Please, no. I still remember the hot milk bao incident. Sister Liang, spare me.”
During the last shopping event, Wen Huiyun had only kindly helped Mi Tao, which had made Liang Yuan a little jealous.
Was she fishing for a reaction now?
