Everyone Loves the Alpha, But He’s Not Interested [Transmigration] - Chapter 38
Bai Qinian glanced at Wei Nian. His eyes darkened, and a wave of murderous intent rose uncontrollably in his heart.
This was a private hospital room. It was quiet, and for the sake of patient privacy, there were no surveillance cameras installed.
But before doing anything, he needed to know who had told Wei Nian about the truth.
“Miss Wei, who told you about this?” Bai Qinian asked calmly.
Wei Nian suddenly clutched her stomach and burst out laughing.
“I guessed. I just threw it out there, and you gave yourself away. President Bai, you’re too easy to read. Hahaha.”
Bai Qinian’s face turned completely dark.
She was playing him.
He clenched his jaw.
“Miss Wei, so no matter what, you’re refusing to write the letter of forgiveness?”
Wei Nian replied without hesitation.
“Bai Piaopiao didn’t do anything wrong. Of course I won’t write any forgiveness letter.”
“You must have misunderstood. I was just surprised by what you said earlier. Piaopiao is Piaopiao. How could she be anyone else?”
Wei Nian gave a shrug.
“You can say whatever you want. I just don’t believe you.”
She was completely unmoved. Bai Qinian had reached the end of his patience.
Still, he reminded himself that she would soon be dead anyway. So his tone remained gentle as he sighed with fake regret.
“Even if this had nothing to do with Piaopiao, I truly wanted to work with you, Miss Wei. It’s a shame.”
He stood up.
“Please rest well. If you change your mind, you can contact Secretary Zhang.”
As he walked out of the room and closed the door behind him, Bai Qinian quietly instructed one of the bodyguards,
“Stay here and watch who comes to visit Wei Nian. Send me updates by message.”
“Yes, President Bai.”
Bai Qinian left with the other bodyguard and, once back in the car, began making calls.
“Do me a favor, Brother Chao.”
“No problem. I’ll provide the drugs. Pay a deposit of three hundred thousand first. Once it’s done, pay the remaining seven hundred thousand.”
When the man on the other end agreed, Bai Qinian finally let out a breath of relief.
Spending one million to protect Bai Lianlian was worth it.
After Bai Qinian left, Wei Nian immediately reported everything to Ning Xi.
“Bai Qinian was furious,” she said. “But when he left, he was pretending. He tried to look calm, but his face was dark with rage. His expression was scary.”
Ning Xi had the speakerphone on. Yu Qingxue heard her and frowned slightly.
“Bai Qinian has never been clean,” she said. “He has connections in both legal and underground circles. Several artists from other agencies have suffered from his tactics. They lost roles they should have competed for fairly. There have always been rumors in the industry, but no one has found hard evidence.”
Wei Nian felt a chill in her chest.
“President Yu, do you think Bai Qinian might try to have me killed?”
Yu Qingxue’s expression became serious.
“There’s a strong chance he will.”
“Bai Qinian is afraid you’ll reveal the truth. Getting rid of you might be the easiest way to protect himself. It only costs him a little money to make a big problem disappear. Why wouldn’t he do it?”
Wei Nian didn’t respond for a while. She seemed shaken.
Yu Qingxue continued,
“Turn on your phone’s camera and place it somewhere discreet. Bai Qinian won’t want anything traced back to him. He’ll likely use the quietest method possible, such as sending someone disguised as a doctor or nurse to poison your medication.”
“I’ll arrange for a few bodyguards to protect you at the hospital. If anyone comes in claiming they need to change your dressing or give you new medicine, refuse them directly.”
“O-okay, thank you, President Yu,” Wei Nian replied. After hearing Yu Qingxue’s calm and steady voice, she somehow didn’t feel quite so afraid anymore.
Bai Qinian would want everything to stay quiet. He wouldn’t leave any obvious marks or evidence. If she loudly rejected any fake treatments, the other party wouldn’t dare force anything on her.
Yu Qingxue had a long-standing partnership with a private security company. She made a call and temporarily hired three bodyguards to protect Wei Nian.
The security company was located near Beihai Film and Television City, only about twenty minutes from the hospital.
No matter how fast Bai Qinian moved, he couldn’t organize everything within that short time frame.
Ning Xi couldn’t help but wonder aloud,
“Bai Piaopiao is also his daughter. Why would Bai Qinian be willing to kill for Bai Lianlian, but not care about his youngest daughter’s fate?”
She had met biased parents before. Most favored their youngest children, but she had never seen anyone so extreme that they would let one child take the fall for another.
Yu Qingxue rested her chin on her hand, deep in thought.
“I think I might know why… and it may have something to do with me.”
“What do you mean?” Ning Xi asked in confusion.
“When I was in middle school, Bai Piaopiao was known as a genius. A lot of people compared her to me. I remember my mother once told me that Bai Qinian asked her for all my academic records and extracurricular achievements. He wanted to compare them with Bai Piaopiao’s, since they were around the same age.”
“I was good in all subjects and also studied ballet, singing, piano, and acting. Except for math, Bai Piaopiao didn’t measure up to me in anything. Compared to her, Bai Lianlian wasn’t as strong academically, but she had real talent in the arts.”
“Bai Qinian has always been obsessed with winning. He grew up in the shadow of my father and could never surpass him. So he projected that pressure onto his children. He probably thought Bai Lianlian had the potential to surpass me and become the next Omega star, which is why he favored her so much.”
Ning Xi didn’t know how to respond.
Around seven in the evening, Ning Xi received a call from Wei Nian.
“Ning Xi, someone really tried to kill me just now!” Her breathing was heavy and uneven. “Luckily, President Yu sent three bodyguards to protect me. If not, I might not be alive right now.”
“Are you hurt? Did they catch the person? Did you report it?” Ning Xi asked immediately.
“I’m fine. The police came and arrested a woman disguised as a nurse. I’m about to go give a statement at the station.”
“You have no idea how terrifying it was. It was intense. It was thrilling. I’ve never even felt this excited while acting!”
Ning Xi could actually hear the lingering adrenaline in Wei Nian’s voice.
“…Just focus on giving your statement properly,” she said.
“Yeah! Ning Xi, don’t forget to thank President Yu for me. If it weren’t for her, I’d be done for.”
“Got it. I’ll thank her on your behalf right now.”
After dinner, Yu Qingxue had gone to the study next to the bedroom to handle some work. She still hadn’t come out.
Ning Xi felt bored waiting alone. She had almost been counting the minutes. During the hour or so that Yu Qingxue wasn’t around, she didn’t even feel like checking Weibo on her phone.
Being near Yu Qingxue seemed to be addictive.
Ning Xi walked to the study door and gently knocked. Only after hearing a voice from inside say “Come in,” did she push the door open.
Yu Qingxue took off her blue-light glasses and rubbed her temples, clearly tired.
“Did the people Bai Qinian hired make a move?” she asked.
Ning Xi noticed her shoulders looked tense. Without waiting for her to say anything, she stepped forward and began massaging them.
“Yes,” she said. “Just as you predicted, the assassin disguised themselves as a nurse and put a type of poison into Wei Nian’s wound medicine. It could be absorbed through the skin. Thankfully, Wei Nian reported it to the police immediately.”
She kept working on her shoulders while speaking.
“My only concern now is that the person who tried to kill Wei Nian might not know Bai Qinian was the one who hired them.”
Yu Qingxue closed her eyes slightly, enjoying the massage.
“Don’t worry. The police will find out.”
Ning Xi paused, then leaned in a little and asked,
“President Yu, did you do something behind the scenes?”
Yu Qingxue turned her laptop screen to show her the chat window.
“We also have to thank Teacher Fang’s wife, Guan Yujing. She helped me track a thirty-thousand yuan transfer Bai Qinian made this afternoon. The recipient is connected to the leader of a known gang.”
“By taking Bai Qinian down, we might even help the police clean up the underworld too. Two birds with one stone.”
She finished speaking and lifted her chin slightly, clearly waiting for praise.
Ning Xi didn’t let her down. Compliments poured out of her mouth with no hesitation.
“President Yu, your strategy is brilliant. Bai Qinian’s intelligence isn’t even on the same level as yours. Of course he slipped up…”
In the end, Ning Xi sighed.
“If only I could be as capable as you someday.”
A soft flush appeared on Yu Qingxue’s cheeks, like a delicate layer of blush.
“You already understand everything I say and can keep up with me. That’s already impressive.”
“Not impressive enough,” Ning Xi murmured. She placed her index and middle fingers gently on Yu Qingxue’s temples and began pressing in slow circles.
“If I were as capable as you, I could handle both the brainwork and the heavy lifting. You wouldn’t have to be this tired.”
