Chapter 44: Fu Han Seems to Be Moving Work
Fu Han seemed to be moving his workplace to the theater. Since he was the investor, no one in the crew could easily drive him away.
“What is this stage play about?” Fu Han sat down next to Ji Qingyu, who was grasping a pen and writing something.
“It’s about two people separating and never reuniting.”
“Is that what you choose to film? Is that what you like?” Fu Han’s voice dropped again.
“Yes,” Ji Qingyu said slowly. “I like things like that.”
Fu Han looked a little annoyed. He curled his hand into a fist, then forced a smile. “Fine, if you like it, film it. They say drama is fictional.”
He continued talking, but when he turned around, he saw that Ji Qingyu had already gotten up, taking his newly bought goji berry cup, to discuss the script with the director.
Fu Han sat alone in his spot. None of the surrounding actors paid him any mind; some were even whispering about him, their eyes assessing and hostile.
Fu Han ignored all the stares and lowered his head to handle work.
Finally, the rehearsal ended. In the evening, Yu Yue dragged Ji Qingyu out for dinner.
Fu Han, who originally intended to walk Ji Qingyu home, maintained a distance of no more than three steps behind the two of them.
Ji Qingyu walked ahead, and he silently followed behind.
These past few days, Ji Qingyu’s glands had improved significantly, likely due to the pheromones Fu Han inadvertently emitted during his emotional fluctuations.
“Seriously, it’s creepy. How long is he going to follow us like this?” Yu Yue linked arms with Ji Qingyu and whispered.
“I don’t know,” Ji Qingyu was quite nonchalant about it. If he couldn’t shake him, just let him follow. It might even save a meal expense.
Perhaps seeing Ji Qingyu’s lack of obvious resistance, Fu Han moved a little closer.
“Let’s go to the hospital with me after dinner. I’ve scheduled an appointment. Let’s get you properly checked,” he reached out to tug at Ji Qingyu’s sleeve.
“I can see a doctor myself. I don’t need to trouble you,” Ji Qingyu looked away, quietly batting away Fu Han’s hand.
“I found this at my place in Jing City,” Fu Han opened his palm, revealing the small pendant. “You still had it after all this time?”
His eyes were bright, staring unblinkingly at the Omega, seeming to expect an affirmative answer from Ji Qingyu.
Ji Qingyu looked at the blue star, sparkling under the night lights: “What is this? I forgot.”
Fu Han was choked into silence. Ji Qingyu had already walked further away with Yu Yue.
“What ‘all this time’? Did something happen when you two were younger?” Yu Yue gossiped in a low voice.
“Mm-hmm,” Ji Qingyu said. “I was the easiest one among his many partners to coax. He just sent a pendant to amuse me.”
“Wow, how could he be like that?” Yu Yue looked at Fu Han, who remained frozen in place. “He’s still behind us, looking stunned.”
“Ignore him,” Ji Qingyu said slowly. “Let’s eat the crab roe soup dumplings at this place.”
Fu Han didn’t come inside, perhaps afraid of spoiling the mood. He just bought a wrap outside and ate it alone, waiting for Ji Qingyu and Yu Yue to come out.
When Ji Qingyu emerged, an Omega was asking for his contact information, which he refused with a wave of his hand.
Fu Han was smoking again, talking on the phone while he smoked. Wrapped in his trench coat, his cold profile looked tired and proud. He was still busy, seemingly having many unresolved matters.
Seeing Ji Qingyu come out, he quickly gave a few more instructions, abruptly hung up the phone, put out his cigarette, and rushed over. He stood a short distance away, his gaze almost solicitous, watching him. He was practically like a large dog.
“If you have work to do, go do it. Don’t stay here all the time. We… feel burdened by it,” Ji Qingyu said quietly.
“Exactly! We were having a nice meal, but we can’t eat properly with you around,” Yu Yue was completely on Ji Qingyu’s side. After all these days, she had more or less pieced together the sequence of events from Weibo and Ji Qingyu’s sporadic comments.
She had initially thought the man in front of her was handsome, but after hearing everything, his handsomeness had dropped several notches.
Yu Yue had a new date waiting. She parted ways with Ji Qingyu at the intersection. Before leaving, she glared at Fu Han and instructed worriedly, “Contact me anytime if anything happens.”
“Go quickly.” Yu Yue was loud and chirpy, making Ji Qingyu feel less lonely. Fu Han’s presence was also less abrupt and oppressive.
As soon as Yu Yue left, Fu Han’s voice immediately rang out: “Let’s go. The doctor is waiting. Your glands need regular check-ups anyway. Consider it for the child.”
Ji Qingyu sighed and nodded. He didn’t want to argue much on this matter, so he followed Fu Han into the car.
“It’s best for your body not to carry this child. Your glands are fragile, and you lack pheromone comfort, which is bad for both the child’s and your own emotions,” the doctor finally concluded after the examination. “If you don’t take good care of yourself, your health will worsen in the future.”
“I have to give birth,” Ji Qingyu repeated the same phrase.
“You young people! Your health should be the priority! Are you trying to kill yourselves?” Before the doctor could finish, Ji Qingyu stood up and left.
Fu Han tried to grab him again. Ji Qingyu impatiently shook off his hand, feeling more than ever that this situation was unsustainable.
He thought for a moment, then led Fu Han to a less crowded table in the hospital. The two sat facing each other.
Fu Han saw that Ji Qingyu was finally willing to talk to him and curved his lips into a smile.
Ji Qingyu took a deep breath, pursed his lips, and finally spoke, his voice slow and gentle.
“Fu Han, you know that many things have an expiration date. Maybe before that date, the thing won’t spoil, but once the expiration date is reached, it can never go back to what it was. People also have an expiration date,” Ji Qingyu’s eyes were faint as he spoke these words.
“Your hand, you injured your tendons. Remember not to touch cold water, or it will always hurt on rainy days. This pain won’t kill you, but it will constantly remind you that you are different from others, and that injured place will never be completely healed.”
“If you want to know why I know this so clearly,” Ji Qingyu pointed to his own glands, and then to his throat, “it’s because I have many such scars on my body.”
“I’m telling you this not to make you pity me or to demand extra compensation, but to tell you that the expiration date between us has passed.” Ji Qingyu felt thirsty from speaking, but he still wanted to talk. He wanted to get all these words out in one breath, hoping to alleviate the chest tightness and flashback-like pain that intermittently arose. “Don’t lift heavy objects with your hand. Don’t neglect it. Jiang City is too humid. For your own good, please go back quickly. If you don’t leave, I’ll have to move again… I quite like it here, and I quite like my current job. You, you’re kind of bothering me.”
Fu Han stared at Ji Qingyu, speechless for a long time.
“The doctor just said that you need Alpha pheromones during pregnancy. I’m here. At least it’s better for the child,” Fu Han’s voice was very low and husky, seeming to know that he was using a disgraceful tactic.
“It doesn’t matter. I didn’t need pheromones during the six years I was marked by you. This kind of thing isn’t mandatory,” Ji Qingyu said, then stood up and left.
Those were hurtful words. Fu Han took two deep breaths, trying to pretend he hadn’t been hurt, and continued to linger around Ji Qingyu as if nothing were wrong.
Fu Han was still following him as he walked out of the hospital entrance. He didn’t dare to get too close to Ji Qingyu, keeping two steps behind him. After a few steps, Ji Qingyu heard the Alpha trying to make conversation again: “It’s been a long time since I heard you sing. Can you sing me a song again? My birthday wish the other day was to live well with you and to hear you sing.”
“My voice has been hoarse for a long time. My singing isn’t pleasant,” Ji Qingyu held the medical record in his hand. He was looking at the film. Gland damage was complicated by nerve pain. He hadn’t expected such an issue. He put the film away. “Besides, not everyone’s birthday wishes come true.”
Fu Han was stumped. Ji Qingyu had already hailed a taxi. He suddenly felt an invisible wall between himself and Ji Qingyu, one that couldn’t be moved. Ji Qingyu seemed determined to shut him out.
“When are you planning to go back?” Ji Qingyu asked. “Ji Ran is only being detained for fifteen days; his trial hasn’t started yet. You must be very busy. And Fu Yunbai, he must be very angry, right?”
“Fu Han, you don’t really love me that much, do you? You could go six years without looking for me for one matter. Now you’re just repenting. Guilt always runs out eventually,” Ji Qingyu sighed. He was wearing a thin, single-layer jacket today. The fuzzy material made him look very young. Outside the hospital, people kept looking back at him. “When that time comes, you can go back to your world and live the way you were used to. What about me? What about the child?”
“Those people back then, that was all just pretense,” Fu Han panicked, reaching out to grab Ji Qingyu, but Ji Qingyu pushed him away.
“Ji Qingyu, didn’t you love me back then? I will only love you from now on. Wouldn’t it be better if we continued?”
“No,” Ji Qingyu said. “I’m tired. You should go back quickly.”
“Why are you so calm about me? Whether you blame me or want compensation, why do you treat me like a stranger, even colder than a stranger? You weren’t like this before. If I got hurt, you would definitely be more worried than I was,” Fu Han said. “The truth is, you stopped caring about me a long time ago, right?”
“I was eighteen then. I was an idiot. If I’m stupid again, I’ll be fooled again,” Ji Qingyu said. “Back then, all you had to do was crook your finger, and I foolishly believed you were only good to me. Now, just because you say a few nice words, I should forgive you? My mother is watching me from heaven. If she saw me treating myself this poorly, she would be heartbroken. I don’t want her to worry.”
Ji Qingyu left. He thought that after saying so many heartless things, Fu Han would surely retreat.
His mind was in turmoil. He wandered aimlessly through Jiang City, only returning to the guesthouse late into the night.
The wind in Jiang City carried moisture, blowing damply on his face and lifting the ends of his hair.
It was pitch black at night, with only a few streetlights still on. Ji Qingyu vaguely saw someone sitting on the ground outside his door, their head buried in their knees, apparently asleep.
Ji Qingyu’s mind, which had just calmed down, surged once more. After all that talk, it was all in vain. Why couldn’t he just let go of him? Ji Qingyu thought about it for a long time, finally reaching a conclusion. He walked over and patted Fu Han.
The other person woke up groggily, grabbing Ji Qingyu’s calf. His hand was large. Fu Han seemed to have been drinking again; his ears were a little red. Subconsciously, he leaned against Ji Qingyu’s leg: “You’re back…”
Ji Qingyu sighed.
“Fu Han, are you feeling unsatisfied? Do you want to do it again? If you do, then come on. Do it, then leave,” Ji Qingyu looked down at Fu Han. Fu Han couldn’t discern any emotion in those eyes; they were as indifferent as an ice field.
It was a final, killing blow.
Fu Han was completely stunned. He was slapped by this softly spoken sentence, unable to react. He remained frozen in place for a long time, mostly sobering up, and asked blankly: “What did you say?”
