Chapter 40: The Departure
The departure still took place late at night.
Ji Qingyu slowly pulled his suitcase away. His clothes, all stored in the closet, didn’t seem like much. Fu Han was holding his waist. Although Ji Qingyu moved gently, he still attracted his attention.
“Where are you going?”
“Can’t sleep. Going to get a glass of water.”
Fu Han’s voice was a bit husky. He released Ji Qingyu’s hand and cleared the space beside him: “Hurry back.”
Ji Qingyu finished packing his suitcase. Aside from the clothes he brought, there were many new ones in the house, as Fu Han always had people deliver many items.
Other than that, there was nothing else.
Ji Qingyu felt that this day was always going to come for him and Fu Han. Whether there was a child or a misunderstanding, perhaps it was always meant to be this way from the very beginning, ever since he learned of Fu Han’s cavalier attitude toward relationships.
He once thought that if he was just given a corner, any corner, where he could settle down, survive, and earn a little money, that would be enough.
However, once a person obtains something imaginary that looks like happiness, they can’t help but want more, only to find themselves about to fall right after taking a step forward.
The Alpha was breathing with a strong presence, his arms long, his silhouette beautiful. Ji Qingyu took one last look, then quietly left without disturbing anyone.
Ma Yu was already waiting at the agreed-upon corner. There were no surveillance cameras here; Ji Qingyu had scouted it out carefully. They would reach Jiang City by noon the next day.
Jiang City was a warm water town. A drama and music festival was about to be held there. Compared to Jing City, its cultural atmosphere was richer, and Yu Yue’s new stage play would also be touring there.
Midway through the journey, Fu Han discovered Ji Qingyu’s absence and called him. Ji Qingyu paused for a few seconds, then, inexplicably, answered.
“Where did you go?” Fu Han’s voice was deep. “Why is your luggage gone?”
It was a surprise that Fu Han even had time to notice his belongings. Ji Qingyu said flatly: “I left.”
“What do you mean? Where are you going? Did the Ji family threaten you?” Fu Han’s questions poured out in a rush, his voice tight. “Come back. How many more times do you want to lie to me?”
“Fu Han.” Ji Qingyu looked at the rapidly passing scenery outside the window. Ma Yu was quiet, as if non-existent. Ji Qingyu clenched his hand tightly and took two deep breaths. “I never lied to you, and I never owed you anything.”
“What more do you want?” Fu Han’s voice was unprecedentedly deep, laced with chilling anger. “Didn’t we agree yesterday? Why do you always like doing this?”
“Doing what? The past incident wasn’t my fault, I told you many times, but you wouldn’t believe it.” Ji Qingyu didn’t know why, but his eyes turned red as he spoke. “If you say my unannounced departure this time is a lie, then I apologize to you. Fu Han, I have hidden a lot from you recently, but I didn’t mean to.”
There was a long silence on the other end, followed by the sound of something shattering, and then more crashing sounds. Ji Qingyu thought, there were several bottles of champagne left yesterday; what a waste.
Ma Yu handed him a pack of tissues. Only then did he realize he was crying.
“…If you wanted to leave so badly, why did you marry me in the first place? Isn’t this what you always expected?” Fu Han’s voice trembled.
“I never expected it.”
“Were all those times you said you loved me lies too?”
Ji Qingyu clenched his hand tightly: “Yes.”
“So you planned to leave from the very beginning.” Fu Han’s voice became calm. “Fine. Don’t let me find you.”
The two were silent for a moment. Ji Qingyu was about to hang up when Fu Han suddenly asked: “Since you lied to me, why didn’t you keep lying?”
“There’s no reason anymore. I’ll tell you the truth: I was forced to marry you by Ji Ran. Now that reason that compelled me… has vanished.”
There was no sound on the other end.
“So you were lying to me from beginning to end?”
“Yes.”
“Is someone else with you?”
“Yes.” Ji Qingyu didn’t know why, perhaps just to deliberately hurt Fu Han, but he suddenly blurted out, “It’s the Alpha I truly love. I’ve carried his child before.”
“Originally, getting by with you wouldn’t have been a big deal, but I got pregnant again, so I ran away with him.”
“The Alpha you love, isn’t that Ma Yu?”
“…What?” Now it was Ji Qingyu’s turn to be surprised.
“He was your childhood friend, always meticulous in caring for you. After you played me in high school, weren’t you always with him?” Fu Han said. “I saw it all. He hugged you. He stayed at your house from morning till night every day. I had people check. Ma Yu’s car is gone. He cancelled his lease. Where did you two go?”
“When you were with me, he could come and go from our house. If anything happened, he could find you immediately, earlier than I could.”
“Fu Han, are you out of your mind?” Ji Qingyu found this utterly absurd. If he and Ma Yu were going to be together, they would have been together long ago, since they were teenagers. What did it have to do with Fu Han?
The other end paused, then continued: “Your throat injury was intentional. Tell me, was it the Ji family who did it? Come back first and explain everything clearly. Why did you leave so abruptly? How dare you not tell me anything?”
“I have the right to decide who I am with! We were an arranged marriage; there were no feelings from beginning to end! You have one Omega after another by your side! What right do you have to judge me? Do you think only you have a heart, only your heart can ache and feel sad? Why is your grievance a grievance, and mine is insignificant? Why is everything you say law? You can get angry, you can decide whether to forgive or not—do you think you are an emperor granting general amnesty? Whoever you like has to worship you and obey your every command?”
Fu Han was extremely annoyed, his tone growing frantic: “I can change! Just come back first!”
Ji Qingyu sighed: “There are many people who like you. There are many people willing to have your child. Go find them.”
“My child is mine alone. Don’t you dare try to touch him.”
Fu Han paused, then suddenly and abruptly said, “Ji Qingyu, whose child is this?”
Ji Qingyu hesitated, realizing that if he continued to talk, Fu Han might notice something was wrong. He quickly hung up the phone.
Ma Yu handed Ji Qingyu tissues again, then turned into the nearest rest stop. Ji Qingyu washed his face and tied up his hair. He bought a cup of ice water to place on his eyes to reduce the swelling.
Walking out, he saw Ma Yu spacing out by the car. Seeing Ji Qingyu, Ma Yu said awkwardly, “Xiaoyu, I suddenly remembered something. I ran into Fu Han several times back then, right? I thought he was looking for trouble, and he was so scary, so one time I wanted to scare him away.”
Ma Yu scratched his head: “He asked me what my relationship with you was, and I said I was your boyfriend. I didn’t mean it; I just wanted to scare him off…”
Ji Qingyu paused: “It’s not your fault. Brother Ma, you got dragged into this. I should be the one apologizing.”
The pickup truck swayed. After a night of rushing, they finally reached Jiang City in the afternoon. Jing City and Jiang City were miles apart. Ji Qingyu snapped his SIM card in half and threw it into a stream in Jiang City.
Jiang City was a beautiful place, with green tiles and brick walls. The wind blowing on one’s face was warm. Even in winter, one didn’t need to wear heavy cotton clothes, just a thin jacket.
After they arrived, they ate local special noodles. Ma Yu had already found a place for them to stay. The guesthouse he rented for Ji Qingyu was clean and lovely, located right next to the theater. Ji Qingyu arranged his few belongings, went out to buy some daily necessities, and then contacted Yu Yue.
She and the crew had already arrived. The new script was handed to Ji Qingyu. He had received many invitations for scripts but preferred the one Yu Yue invited him for. The workload was light, and the hours were flexible, which was perfect for him.
Jiang City was different from Jing City. It was a mild water town. People ate noodles in soup, and the pastries were delicate and pretty. The local customs were gentle. Jing City’s climate was poor, often experiencing dust storms and dryness. Ji Qingyu remembered once returning home from work, his bicycle covered in yellow sand.
“Qingyu, I’m going to talk to the boss about buying land. I know this boss well; he’s the same one from whom I leased land in Jing City. If you want to lease land later, contact me. We’ll meet up later.”
Ji Qingyu nodded: “Brother Ma, thank you. I’ll treat you to dinner later.”
Ma Yu helped Ji Qingyu move the new bedding and plants into the room, waved, and left. The house even had a small courtyard. If there was a chance in the future, Ji Qingyu even wanted to contact Luo Sheng to visit him.
He moved a chair, lay back on the deck chair, slowly closed his eyes, and quietly zoned out, thinking of nothing. He rarely felt this peaceful. He didn’t know how long passed until his stomach rumbled. He stood up, ready to walk along the bluestone path and buy something to eat.
He found a noodle shop with many diners. While eating, he opened his phone, originally intending to deactivate WeChat and get a new account, but saw many messages popping up.
Luo Sheng and Nannan were both asking if he was okay. It seemed Fu Han had contacted them.
Ji Qingyu replied to each of them that he was fine and not to worry, then left them his new number, stressing repeatedly not to tell Fu Han.
Then he looked at the account that had sent him the most messages. He was a little surprised; how could he have sent so many? Ji Qingyu didn’t click on the red dot. He paused for a moment and directly deactivated the account.
The boss brought his noodles. He lowered his head and ate.
It was good. Everything was not as difficult as he had imagined.
The diners around him were talking: “Crazy, they say he’s suing again for personal injury.”
“Injury for what?”
“His wife’s throat. They say Ji Ran poisoned him, and those songs, too—they were all written by his wife.”
“How is that possible?”
“Why not? Go look, the authorities released the evidence.”
Luo Sheng called him: “Xiaoyu, where is your mother? What about her since you left? Do you need me to help look after her? And your child…”
Ji Qingyu finished the last strand of noodles: “Uncle, don’t worry. I’m doing very well now, and the child is fine, too. My mother… she passed away.”
The other side of the phone was silent for a while, then the sound of a cup being knocked over. A long time later, Luo Sheng said: “Xiaoyu, do you want me to come and be with you?”
“No need, Uncle. It’s lovely here, and I am fine. Right now, everything is moving in a good direction for me. Come visit me when you have time. I’ll miss you very much.”
He didn’t ask for much and wasn’t greedy. A bowl of delicious noodles was enough to fill him up.
He put down his chopsticks and walked out. He chatted with Luo Sheng all the way back. The evening breeze blew, and he suddenly realized that there had always been people who cared about him. Did this mean that he wasn’t as worthless as those people claimed? Perhaps he had done well enough. Perhaps he wasn’t so bad after all.
