Chapter 37: Ji Qingyu by Lin Ying’s Side
Ji Qingyu stayed by Lin Ying’s side all night. Lin Ying was quiet, as if she were asleep. Ji Qingyu’s thoughts drifted. He thought that perhaps when people leave, it’s like a butterfly, floating lightly into the air, then maybe turning into mist or something else.
Ji Qingyu pushed open the ward door. The TV in the hospital lobby was broadcasting the news of the lawsuit between the Ji Corporation and Fu Han, a trending entertainment headline. Ji Qingyu walked past without even glancing over. He replaced the plant by Lin Ying’s bedside with a pot of bamboo.
His perception of his body had become numb. He should have felt sleepy, but he felt nothing.
The transparent IV tube was taped to Lin Ying’s hand, and saline solution was continuously pumped into her body.
“Mom, I’ve finished another stage play project. I’ll play the song for you. Our performance was excellent, and it’s been submitted for the competition. I can take care of myself now.” Ji Qingyu forced a smile. “I have good news for you—I’m having a baby.”
“You don’t have to worry about me anymore, Ms. Lin Ying. Do you know that the eighteen years I spent with you were the happiest, most blessed eighteen years of my life?”
So, no matter what problems or troubles I face later, I can handle them.
Ji Qingyu played the song and fell asleep again by Lin Ying’s bed. He didn’t know how much time passed until he heard a few taps on the glass. Ji Qingyu vaguely woke up, rubbed his eyes, and saw Ma Yu looking at him anxiously through the window.
Ji Qingyu pushed the door open, and Ma Yu immediately hugged him tightly, muttering, “You scared me to death.”
“Last night, Fu Han called me, saying he hadn’t heard from you and asking if you were at my place. I thought something had happened to you.”
“I’m fine.” Ji Qingyu let Ma Yu hug him, his body limp, his arms hanging down.
“What exactly happened?” Ma Yu stared at Ji Qingyu. “Your state is not normal. Something definitely happened. Is it Auntie…”
Ji Qingyu didn’t speak. He gently hugged Ma Yu back, burying his head in Ma Yu’s shoulder, utterly silent. Ma Yu felt a wet patch spreading on his shirt.
He seemed to understand something. He stiffened, then awkwardly patted Ji Qingyu’s back, his own eyes beginning to well up.
They sat outside the ward for a while. Learning that Ji Qingyu had been staying at the hospital and hadn’t eaten, Ma Yu forcefully pulled him downstairs to eat. There were many snack shops near the hospital, but Ji Qingyu had no appetite; everything felt greasy. Just a tiny bite, and everything came right back up.
In the end, he only ate a little plain rice porridge before putting down his chopsticks.
Ji Qingyu used to be completely unparticular about food, eating practically anything. Now he was so fragile. Perhaps the Omega gender truly was a curse, trading a healthy, strong body for the ability to bear children. Most Omegas became increasingly frail and weak due to their physiology and hormones, even if this was not what they wanted.
Seeing Ji Qingyu’s unusual reaction, Ma Yu had a bad feeling. A car horn blared outside, disturbing the noise. Ma Yu hesitated, then finally spoke: “Qingyu, are you possibly…”
“Yes,” Ji Qingyu nodded, not intending to hide it. “I’m pregnant.”
Ma Yu froze. Ji Qingyu didn’t look at his expression. After a long time, the other person said, “Then this child…”
“I’m keeping this child,” Ji Qingyu said without hesitation.
“Okay, with our friendship, I should get to be the godparent, right?” Ma Yu tried to cheer Ji Qingyu up.
“Don’t worry, I’ll save the spot for you,” Ji Qingyu finally cracked a smile, though it was still faint.
“…Qingyu, Auntie will definitely be happy too.”
Will she be happy, Ji Qingyu thought. Perhaps not. More than happiness, she would probably be heartbroken for him.
Ma Yu and he were too familiar, having grown up together. Before they differentiated, Ji Qingyu thought they would both be Betas. In the end, one became an Omega and the other an Alpha. However, both treated the other like family. After Lin Ying’s incident, Ma Yu loaned Ji Qingyu over a hundred thousand yuan. Heaven knows how long it would take him to earn that back selling fruit, penny by penny.
“Xiaoyu, what are you planning to do next?” Ma Yu was still supporting him like family.
“I plan to settle everything, and then leave.” Ji Qingyu’s phone rang again. He looked at the familiar name and pressed silent.
Ma Yu saw it too and frowned: “What about Fu Han? He’s almost turned A City upside down looking for you after you disappeared for a day. If you leave, will he just let it go? You didn’t hear the tone in his voice when he called me yesterday, it was terrifying.”
“We’ll see…” Ji Qingyu hadn’t considered those things.
“Why don’t you stay at my place for these few days?” Ma Yu asked again.
“No need. I don’t want any more complications. I just want everything to end peacefully.” Ji Qingyu looked out the window. The daylight was glaring.
In the afternoon, Ji Qingyu returned to the hospital. Ma Yu stayed with him.
“Qingyu, the sales for grapes in Jiang City are good recently. I plan to sell the leased land in A City and try my luck in Jiang City. If you’re interested, you can come with me.”
After Ma Yu left, Ji Qingyu remained by Lin Ying’s side. He felt extremely tired. The pregnancy was more taxing on his body than he had imagined. He had been awake for a full day and night, nearly thirty-six hours, without sleep. As the sky darkened, he finally got up and took a taxi back to the villa.
It was very late when he returned. No one was home. The night was pitch black. Ji Qingyu took off his coat and curled up in bed. His hands and feet were cold, and he closed his eyes.
Despite being so tired, he couldn’t sleep well. He had many bizarre dreams, all featuring Lin Ying. In his dreams, he sat by the fish stall, watching Lin Ying expertly knock the fish unconscious and slit their bellies with a clean slice. Lin Ying could unload an entire truckload of fish by herself. He wanted to help but ended up dropping and breaking the fish.
Lin Ying found him hiding anxiously behind the truck and laughed, pulling him out: “You broke enough fish for us to eat for a month.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Then will you come with Mom to unload the truck tomorrow?”
“Yes!”
“Qingyu, Mom won’t blame you for a small thing like this. You are Mom’s treasure. Remember, as long as Mom is here, you will always have backup and can do whatever you want to do.”
Lin Ying took out a guitar from behind her: “You looked at the music store window for a long time that day, didn’t you? Go try it.”
Ji Qingyu’s lips curved into a smile, and he finally drifted into a deep sleep. He didn’t know how much time passed until the door was opened with a click.
The air was silent for a few seconds. The Alpha walked quickly and grabbed Ji Qingyu’s hand, pulling him up. Ji Qingyu’s hard-won sleepiness was shattered. The Alpha’s gaze was dark and overcast: “Where did you go, and why didn’t you answer your phone?”
“Didn’t you tell me not to come back?” Ji Qingyu moved his gaze away coldly. He didn’t talk; he couldn’t even be bothered to pretend to please him anymore. He just wanted to sleep. He was exhausted.
“That was said out of anger.” Fu Han’s voice became more controlled. He tossed a chip down. “It’s been investigated. The files in the phone were planted beforehand. See this chip? It automatically listens, records, and transmits information whenever there’s a signal.”
“Chenxing Construction contacted us. Ji Ran had contact with them. The files were likely leaked from their side.” Fu Han’s voice was still even. “Why would he do that? To specifically frame you?”
“I want to sleep.” Ji Qingyu didn’t want to deal with Fu Han. Listening to all of this only annoyed him. He tried to pull his hand out of Fu Han’s grip, but Fu Han held on tighter.
Ji Qingyu tried to wrench it away but couldn’t. He suddenly felt extremely irritated. The bad emotions that had been suppressed for a long time surged through his body. He felt nauseous, and instinctively wanted to be far away from this person in front of him.
“Also, since it was a misunderstanding, why didn’t you explain?” Fu Han’s tone was deep, almost sinister.
“I did explain. I explained many things properly,” Ji Qingyu said flatly. He closed his eyes. Outside the window, there were still scattered lights on, the shadows were blurry and dim, and a layer of persistent mist hung in the air.
Fu Han seemed to get angrier. A faint vein pulsed on his temple, and his brow was tightly furrowed. After a moment, he said, “You didn’t answer my calls all day yesterday. Do you know how many places I searched? What if something had happened to you?”
“I didn’t ask you to look for me.” Ji Qingyu was truly tired. He had just dreamt of Lin Ying, and those illusions had been scattered by Fu Han. He sighed inwardly, yanked his hand forcefully out of Fu Han’s grasp, lay back down, and buried his head in the covers.
Fu Han’s heart clenched. He vaguely sensed that Ji Qingyu’s state was wrong, but he couldn’t grasp the source. This person looked as if they were on two parallel lines from him. He could see him but couldn’t touch him.
Ji Qingyu was like the dull, hazy lights outside the window, blurry and distant. Even his bones seemed blurred by the night. He could only see his pale skin through the shadows, and every part of his well-proportioned, beautiful body carried a cold sense of exhaustion.
He had his back to Fu Han. The bed in the secondary bedroom was much narrower than the master bed. The person behind him hadn’t left. A few seconds later, he spoke again: “I bought you a mutual fund, and I’ve also set aside company shares for you, as compensation for our contractual relationship.”
“Oh, thank you.” Ji Qingyu’s eyes were already closed, his voice slow and cold. “So, is this an apology?”
“Apology?” Fu Han chuckled. “You never apologized to me for what happened back then either.”
“That’s true.” Ji Qingyu didn’t speak anymore, giving a silent, small laugh. The room fell quiet.
Fu Han stood there for a moment, subconsciously feeling a strange sense of panic. His heart was being squeezed and dragged down.
He didn’t leave. Instead, he lay down and tightly embraced Ji Qingyu from behind, like a warm furnace. Ji Qingyu was weak. He tried to push him away twice, and seeing he couldn’t, he simply ignored him, allowing the other person to hold him. He was about to fall asleep.
As his consciousness gradually blurred, he faintly heard Fu Han’s voice again, as if through a dense layer of sandpaper. Though they lay in the same bed, they seemed separated into two different worlds, where neither could clearly see the other’s appearance. The Alpha’s voice was deep, carrying a trace of unnoticeable grievance: “Why have you become so cold?”
“Those funds and shares are more than enough to last a lifetime… I only yelled at you a few times. I admit it was my fault.”
“Ji Qingyu, don’t push your luck.”
No one responded to him, and no one nestled into his arms to please him anymore. Even when Fu Han pressed his teeth against Ji Qingyu’s neck, the other person remained completely indifferent. It was as if nothing mattered anymore.
Even though Omegas are physically delicate, the exceptionally strong-willed Ji Qingyu had endured for six years alone. When he made up his mind about something, about a person he decided to part ways with, no matter how dominant or arrogant the other person was, they could not shake him even an inch.
