Distance Formula - Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Bai Biqing’s subsequent plan was much simpler; the two of them basically wandered as they walked. Because Su Yanshi was too well-equipped with her gear, they constantly had to keep an eye on whether people around them were taking notice.
After an unknown number of times, Bai Biqing finally couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed Su Yanshi’s face, pulled her zipper down, snatched off the mask, and after pressing the brim of the hat lower, refused to give the mask back no matter what was said.
Su Yanshi covered her mouth in surprise, speaking in a muffled voice: “Is it really okay like this?”
Bai Biqing turned around and looked at her expressionlessly: “Don’t you think you were attracting more attention acting the way you were just now?”
The Alpha lowered her head and remained silent.
Bai Biqing directly grabbed her wrist and squeezed into the crowd: “I know you’re afraid. We’ve finally managed to come out and play—be more generous with yourself, and stop scaring yourself.”
In the evening, the flow of people was always heavier. This street was even more crowded than the last one, and the two were afraid of getting separated, so they had to switch to holding hands. Su Yanshi looked down at their interlaced hands, feeling inexplicably unnatural.
The Beta’s palm was very warm, carrying the sweat of both of them; Bai Biqing’s hand seemed almost large enough to envelop her entire hand.
She thought back to that night, her heart trembling. She subconsciously rubbed her face, accidentally touching her injury. Su Yanshi let out a hiss of pain, which cleared her head quite a bit.
Hearing this, Bai Biqing turned her head and asked nervously: “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell somewhere?”
“No,” Su Yanshi stammered, not daring to meet her gaze for a moment.
Although suspicion rose in Bai Biqing’s heart, she ultimately said nothing. She looked toward a place where the crowd was surging and spoke a bit louder: “There’s a handmade craft shop over there. Do you want to go play? I see fewer people there.”
At this moment, Su Yanshi wanted nothing more than to go somewhere with fewer people, so she agreed without hesitation. She said: “I do.”
“What?”
Su Yanshi pursed her lips. She stepped forward a few inches, the tips of her shoes brushing against Bai Biqing’s. Their hands were still held together; it seemed both had forgotten any intention of letting go.
The Alpha stood slightly on her tiptoes, gripping Bai Biqing’s shoulder, and leaned close to her ear to whisper: “Teacher Bai, I want to go.”
Bai Biqing almost felt the urge to shrink her shoulder away—not because she resisted Su Yanshi’s closeness, but because at the moment the other woman pressed against her, the moment that warm breath touched her earlobe, her fingers curled. It was like a wave of numbness flowing from her spine through her entire body.
Her lips moved. She lowered her gaze and leaned over Su Yanshi; the Alpha, sensing the intent, waited quietly. She took small breaths as if she were tired from walking and needed to rest, still carrying a smile on her face as she looked at her.
All around them were chaotic, passing sounds. Suddenly, Bai Biqing felt the surrounding noise become blurred, as if everything had been put into soft focus. She raised her hand, gently touched Su Yanshi’s face, took a heavy breath, but ultimately said nothing, turning to lead her away.
The lights came on in succession the second they stepped into the shop.
For some reason, as she was being led away, Su Yanshi looked back once. Her fingertip hooked a fragment of the countless lights, and then she slowly tightened her hand.
Su Yanshi walked forward quickly, signaling for Bai Biqing to wait a moment while she patted the Alpha’s shoulder: “Teacher Bai.”
“Mhm?” Bai Biqing turned back, looking at her questioningly.
Su Yanshi opened her palm: “Nothing. Just afraid you’d disappear.”
Bai Biqing gave a wordless smile. She took a light breath, slowed her pace to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with Su Yanshi, and the two of them walked to the information desk to inquire about the details.
That ray of light, having traveled through ten thousand years, was gently gifted to Bai Biqing by Su Yanshi.
