- Chapter 35 - "Caught in the Act of a Secret Kiss."
Chapter 35: “Caught in the Act of a Secret Kiss.”
Jiang Yi grabbed her wrist, her eyes dark, but in just a moment, the emotion dissipated without a trace, as if it had never been there.
Jiang Yi frowned, her expression serious: “Try it? Is that something you can just ‘try’?”
Lin Anran’s expression was slightly stunned, not expecting this reaction, which was too different from what she had imagined.
Jiang Yi said seriously: “Lin Anran, you’re not a child anymore. You need to have some sense of propriety in your words and actions. Kissing is a way for couples to express affection; it’s not something you can just try with anyone because you watched a movie and felt curious.”
The atmosphere became tense.
“I wasn’t doing it just out of curiosity…” Lin Anran tried to pull her grabbed hand away: “You’re hurting me.”
Jiang Yi came back to her senses and loosened her grip.
She hadn’t grabbed her that hard, but her skin, which was always sensitive, was already ringed with redness around the wrist.
Lin Anran stood up with a “whoosh”: “Why are you yelling? I was just saying it casually; it’s not like I really meant it. Why are you making a big deal out of it? You’re sick.”
She still wasn’t satisfied after speaking and kicked the sofa twice with a “bang, bang.”
Jiang Yi wanted to say something more, but Lin Anran tossed her head, refusing to communicate, and turned to go back to the room.
The door slammed shut heavily.
Jiang Yi looked at the tightly closed door and sighed softly.
She looked down at the sofa near her feet. The areas she often kicked were already deformed. As for the room door, which was constantly closed with force, it was even looser. She wondered when it might suddenly fall off.
She kicked things whenever she got angry and slammed the door shut.
The movie was still playing, but neither of the two viewers was in a mood to watch it anymore. One went back to the room, and the other got up and walked to the projector to turn it off.
After a moment of hesitation, she walked toward the room door.
“Knock, knock.”
No response from inside.
Jiang Yi knocked twice more. Predictably, the person inside gave a one-word reply.
“Scram!”
Jiang Yi not only didn’t scram but pushed the door open and entered.
As soon as she entered, she was met with Lin Anran’s furious and unfriendly gaze, like she was about to rush up and bite someone.
It wasn’t just like it. Given the chance, she really would bite.
“Angry again?” Why use the word “again”? Naturally, because she got angry eighteen or nineteen times a day. Even a pufferfish couldn’t hold as much air as she held rage.
“Who told you to come in? Scram,” Lin Anran sat on the edge of the bed, chin raised, her face coldly arrogant.
Jiang Yi showed no intention of leaving and walked forward: “Aren’t we watching the movie?”
Lin Anran shot a sharp glare: “What’s there to watch? Just people kissing and kissing. It’s disgusting.”
Jiang Yi approached her and softened her tone: “I spoke too harshly just now. How about I apologize to you?”
“No.”
“Does your wrist still hurt?”
“None of your business.”
Jiang Yi held out her hand to her: “Let me see.”
Lin Anran slapped her hand away: “Such an act. You grabbed my wrist so hard, and now you pretend to care.”
“I didn’t use much force,” Jiang Yi said helplessly.
“Are you denying it now?” Lin Anran glared.
Jiang Yi squatted down in front of her.
One sat on the edge of the bed, and the other squatted in front of her.
Jiang Yi pulled her hand over to check her wrist. The redness had already faded. Her skin was very sensitive and easily reddened with slight force, but it wasn’t injured. The redness appeared easily but faded quickly too.
“Does it hurt much?” Jiang Yi asked, looking up at her.
Lin Anran looked down at her, then uncomfortably looked away, but she didn’t chase Jiang Yi out again, nor did she pull her hand back.
Lin Anran, without her defensive spikes raised, was very docile.
“Are you hungry? You wanted to watch a horror movie so early in the morning, and you didn’t have time for breakfast,” Jiang Yi squatted at her feet, squeezed her hand, and smiled gently.
Facing her gentleness, the anger she felt moments ago vanished, and the corner of her lips involuntarily lifted.
“How about I make you something to eat?” Jiang Yi said.
“Whatever,” Lin Anran pretended to be indifferent.
Jiang Yi released her hand and stood up: “But there are no vegetables in the fridge. I might need to go to the market and buy some.”
Lin Anran frowned with dissatisfaction as her hand, which had been held, was now empty.
“The market isn’t far. I’ll just go myself. You wait at home. The market is usually crowded, and you probably won’t like the environment…”
Before she could finish, Lin Anran suddenly stood up: “I don’t want to be home alone.”
Jiang Yi smiled. With her cowardly nature, she didn’t dare to be alone at home, yet she had wanted to watch a horror movie just now. It was a good thing Jiang Yi had the foresight not to actually show her a horror movie.
However, this foresight seemed to have had a slight deviation; she shouldn’t have chosen a movie with so many kissing scenes.
Jiang Yi didn’t know if Lin Anran’s thought process was simply too bizarre, wanting to “try” kissing with her. What was even more frightening was that Jiang Yi had, for a split second, genuinely considered agreeing.
She wanted to take advantage of Lin Anran’s naivety, to exploit her innocence, and that base thought had surfaced.
Her scolding and lecturing of Lin Anran, her overreacting, was essentially because she herself had panicked.
Jiang Yi collected her thoughts and smiled, saying:
“You can come with me to the market, but I’m warning you beforehand: the market environment is quite messy and might be a little smelly. If you can’t stand it, you’re not allowed to throw a tantrum halfway.”
“Do you treat me like a child? You’re so wordy.”
If she didn’t give her a heads-up, Jiang Yi wouldn’t be reassured. So, long-winded it was.
Upon arriving at the market, the facts proved that the advance warning was very necessary.
Because Lin Anran wanted to curse out loud several times due to the noisy environment, but remembering Jiang Yi’s warning before they left, she forcefully held back.
Passing the seafood section, the pungent smell made Lin Anran’s brows knit tightly.
She couldn’t hold back anymore. She stopped abruptly and glared at the vendor cutting fish: “You…”
Before Lin Anran could curse, Jiang Yi very naturally covered her mouth.
Lin Anran was startled. Realizing what happened, she slapped Jiang Yi’s hand away, extremely angry: “What are you doing?”
Jiang Yi smiled and reminded her kindly: “Do you remember what I said before we left? You promised me you wouldn’t cause trouble.”
“Who’s causing trouble?” Lin Anran scoffed and walked forward with big strides.
The market environment was noisy, especially during this morning hour. It was very crowded, almost shoulder-to-shoulder, and one could easily get separated from their companion if they weren’t careful.
Jiang Yi quickly walked up and pulled the fuming person: “Walk slower. There are so many people. You’ll get lost.”
Lin Anran looked down at the hand holding hers. The anger in her heart suddenly extinguished.
Jiang Yi had actively held her hand. As for the reason why, Lin Anran automatically ignored it. All she knew was that they were holding hands. Her heart felt sweet and happy.
Jiang Yi was afraid of losing her, so she held her hand the whole time. She then noticed that the young miss, who had initially been disgusted, unhappy, and angry, began to bob her head and smile foolishly.
Jiang Yi looked at her in confusion. What was she so happy about?
Lin Anran: “What are you looking at? Stop secretly looking at me.”
Jiang Yi: “…”
Jiang Yi continued shopping for vegetables, picking and choosing, with a little tag-along in tow.
The normally noisy tag-along was unusually quiet today, just following obediently.
“Do you want to eat A-choy? It looks quite fresh,” Jiang Yi let go of her hand to pick A-choy.
Lin Anran pouted: “Not very good. I don’t want it.”
Jiang Yi said “oh,” put down the A-choy, took her hand again, and walked to the next stall: “If you don’t want A-choy, let’s look at something else. What do you like to eat?”
Her hand was held again. Lin Anran happily raised her eyebrows: “Anything is fine. Whatever.”
Jiang Yi smiled humorously at her: “Your ‘anything’ is too hard to choose from. How many vegetables have I asked you about? You always say you don’t want it, and when I ask what you do want, you say ‘whatever.'”
Lin Anran stopped talking. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to eat, but every time Jiang Yi asked, she would let go of her hand first to pick the vegetables.
When the held hand was released, Lin Anran was unhappy, and no vegetable looked appealing. She didn’t want to eat anything.
When Jiang Yi asked what to eat and held her hand again, she was happy, and naturally, she could eat anything.
That was the reason, but Jiang Yi couldn’t possibly guess this point no matter how hard she tried.
Jiang Yi spotted tomatoes and was about to ask, but stopped herself: “Forget it, I’m not asking you anymore. You’re endlessly picky. From now on, you eat whatever I buy. No more being fussy.”
Lin Anran hummed, her eyes constantly focused on Jiang Yi’s hands. Why does it take so long to pick these lousy tomatoes? Hurry up and finish so we can hold hands.
She waited eagerly.
Finally, Jiang Yi finished picking the tomatoes, but the person holding the tomatoes walked straight ahead, forgetting to hold her hand.
Did she forget?
She forgot!
Jiang Yi walked several meters before realizing something was wrong. She turned around and saw Lin Anran standing still, completely motionless, her expression looking somewhat shocked.
“What are you doing? Follow me when you’re done shopping. Why are you still standing there? Do you want to eat something else?” Jiang Yi asked.
Lin Anran bit her lip, not saying a word.
Someone wanted to buy something from the stall in front of Lin Anran. Lin Anran was blocking their way and didn’t move, standing there like a telephone pole.
The elderly woman who wanted to buy things was unhappy: “I say, little beauty, don’t block this stall. I want to buy something. Move aside.”
Lin Anran glared at her: “No. Don’t yell at me. You’re too noisy.”
The elderly woman choked.
Jiang Yi quickly rushed back, pulled Lin Anran away, and apologized to the woman: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Lin Anran: “Why are you apologizing to her? Don’t apologize.”
Jiang Yi gave her a look: “Say less. Did you forget what you promised me before we left?”
No causing trouble or tantrums.
Lin Anran muttered curses, but soon realized that the hand she hadn’t held moments ago was now holding hers.
Instant happiness.
Jiang Yi’s hand was warm. She liked it.
Jiang Yi looked confused. What is up with this young miss? Happy one moment, angry the next. I can’t figure it out.
Jiang Yi looked at the things she was carrying: “That’s enough shopping. If we buy too much, we won’t finish it, and it will go bad. Let’s go back.”
Lin Anran, who was in a good mood, immediately agreed.
But moments later, she immediately shook her head: “No, I want to keep shopping.”
If they left the market, they couldn’t hold hands anymore. No, she couldn’t leave.
Jiang Yi looked puzzled: “Didn’t you say it was messy and smelly here? Why do you still want to shop? Is there something you still want to buy? What do you want? We can buy it now.”
Lin Anran insisted on not leaving. She pointed at things: “I want this, I want that too, and that one is fine too. Anything, buy it all.”
Jiang Yi was amused and helpless: “This is grocery shopping. You think you’re shopping for clothes? Clothes don’t go bad. How can you eat that much food? It will all rot.”
Lin Anran completely ignored her: “Don’t be so stingy. I just want to buy it. If you don’t want to spend the money, I’ll pay for it, you penniless beggar.”
Jiang Yi held up the vegetables she was carrying: “Stop messing around. Don’t forget what you promised me when we left. We’ve bought this much already. We can only buy one more item. Pick one from here. Don’t insist on everything.”
Lin Anran: “Beggar.”
“Beggar gives you one minute to quickly choose one, or we’re going home.”
Lin Anran muttered curses, her eyes scanning around. She had to choose something that would take time. What vegetable would take time to buy?
Oh, fish! After buying it, she had to ask the vendor to gut it. That takes a lot of time.
“I want to eat fish!” Lin Anran’s voice rose.
Jiang Yi was startled: “Eat fish, then eat fish. Why are you shouting so loudly?”
Lin Anran’s eyes were fierce: “Don’t be verbose. Hurry up and buy the fish. Wait, no need to hurry. I allow you to buy it slowly.”
“You allow me? Well, I should thank you for allowing me. Alright, if you want to eat it, hurry up and buy it, then we’ll go home.”
“No hurrying. Buy it slowly.”
Jiang Yi was amused: “Fine, slowly it is. I’ll listen to you. Just stop making a fuss.”
Lin Anran was the one who said she wanted fish, but upon reaching the seafood section, Lin Anran couldn’t stand the smell and frowned repeatedly.
“Why don’t you wait up ahead? I’ll buy it here,” Jiang Yi suggested considerately, seeing her unbearable nose-pinching.
“No,” Lin Anran immediately gripped her hand tightly, afraid that the other person would let go if she was a moment too late.
Jiang Yi belatedly noticed, looking down at their clasped hands.
Does Lin Anran like holding hands…?
Jiang Yi’s eyelashes lowered, lost in thought.
At 3 AM, Jiang Yi, lying on the sofa, still couldn’t sleep.
Her eyes were closed, but her mind was very active, her thoughts a tangled mess, like a ball of twine she couldn’t unravel.
She was recalling Lin Anran’s recent actions, feeling that she was overthinking, yet also feeling that she might be underthinking.
Two completely opposite conclusions clashed back and forth, making her very confused.
A soft “creak.”
The room door opened. Lin Anran was up to use the restroom.
Jiang Yi’s chaotic thoughts temporarily ceased.
She kept her eyes closed, pretending to be fast asleep.
In the dark night, her hearing was exceptionally clear. She heard Lin Anran’s footsteps going to the bathroom, the sound of the door opening and closing, and then the sound of picking up a cup and pouring water.
Finally, the sound of footsteps approached and stopped by the sofa.
The living room fell silent, but she could vaguely hear the breathing of the person standing by the sofa.
Lin Anran didn’t leave; she was just standing there.
Is she looking at me all this time? Jiang Yi was a bit puzzled. Just as she was about to open her eyes, she felt a slight breeze approach, carrying the scent of peach.
A soft touch came to the corner of her mouth.
It felt like something had lightly touched her.
Before Jiang Yi could figure out what it was, the corner of her mouth was lightly brushed again. A strand of hair tickled her cheek.
It felt like a kiss.
It wasn’t like a kiss; she was just kissed.
Jiang Yi felt her mind explode with a “boom” and crash.
