Chapter 87: Extra 1 — Study Abroad Chronicles (I): “I want to get you pregnant.”
Time flew by.
Chen Kongqing successfully completed his thesis, defended it, and graduated from Kunming University. Meanwhile, the day of his departure drew closer. There were approvals for various processes, preparations before leaving, visas, air tickets…
However, Xu Jingmo had arranged all of these for him. Even the luggage was packed by Xu Jingmo.
Standing before two stuffed suitcases, Chen Kongqing stared at the mountain of beef jerky, cured sausages, and various snacks, falling into deep thought. “Is all this necessary?”
Xu Jingmo was still stuffing “provisions” inside. “It’s not much. You can take them out and eat them whenever you’re hungry. Foreign food won’t suit our palates. I checked the area around your dormitory; the Chinese supermarkets are far away. It won’t be convenient for you to go often.”
Chen Kongqing walked over to Xu Jingmo and reached down, stroking the top of the man’s head. Lately, he loved touching Xu Jingmo’s hair. The strands were thicker than his own and felt a bit prickly, but he loved the sensation regardless.
Xu Jingmo didn’t dodge. He simply said flatly, “No respect for your elders.”
Chen Kongqing pouted and squatted in front of him. “Between the two of us, who is ‘big’ and who is ‘small’?”
“Who was the one calling me ‘Gege’ (big brother) last night?” Xu Jingmo arranged the snacks neatly and leisurely raised his gaze.
After two years of “baptism,” Chen Kongqing’s skin had thickened significantly. He wasn’t about to lose ground over a few teases. “Not me.”
“I should have recorded it for you,” Xu Jingmo said, his tone sharpening slightly.
The rabbit remained unfazed, a smile curling on his lips.
After packing the snacks and clothes, Xu Jingmo picked up the two plush carrots on the bed. “Are you taking the old one or the new one?”
Chen Kongqing followed him to the bedside. Looking at the one old and one new carrot in Xu Jingmo’s hands, he was torn. “Can’t I take both?”
Xu Jingmo: “You could… but it might be better to leave one at home for when you come back on break.”
Chen Kongqing was like a little shadow, already clinging to Xu Jingmo’s side. He reached out to circle the man’s neck. “I won’t need to hug a carrot when I come back. I can just hug you.”
Xu Jingmo leaned down slightly to make it easier for Chen Kongqing to hold him. “So I’m the newly promoted carrot?”
“That’s right,” Chen Kongqing acted spoiled in a soft voice, just like when he was younger.
“How long can you stay in California with me?” Once Chen Kongqing hugged him, he refused to let go.
For this trip, Xu Jingmo had specifically adjusted his leave to go with him. That was why Chen Kongqing could still talk so lightheartedly; the sadness of parting hadn’t quite hit him yet. But he never dared to ask exactly how long Xu Jingmo could stay, as if it were a ticking countdown.
“One week.” Xu Jingmo let go of the plush carrot and put his hands on the rabbit’s soft waist.
In the past two years, Chen Kongqing had filled out a bit. He no longer suffered from skin hunger, and he had gained some healthy weight on his face and belly. Xu Jingmo often took him running and rock climbing. Despite this, the rabbit remained pale—as if he were incapable of tanning—though the muscles on his arms had become much firmer.
When Chen Kongqing heard “one week,” he felt it was okay. A whole week.
But quickly, he felt it wasn’t okay at all. Only a week—seven days. After seven days, he and Xu Jingmo would be living on two different continents.
Thinking of this, Chen Kongqing squeezed Xu Jingmo’s neck tighter, pressing against the side of the man’s throat. “Okay.”
Xu Jingmo simply picked him up and sat him on the edge of the bed.
“I’ll come over often when I have leave. When you’re free, come back too, okay?”
“Mhm, I’ll definitely come back…” Chen Kongqing dangled his feet in the air and whispered into Xu Jingmo’s ear, “It’s just two years. I’ll come home after two years.”
“Good,” Xu Jingmo held him, responding tenderly.
…
The day before flying to California, Chen Kongqing’s friends organized a farewell party. Although they had graduated, Gao Tianyou and several other classmates had stayed in Kunming for work. The gathering was very lively.
“Kongqing, will you be a Botany Professor when you get back?” Gao Tianyou looked at him with longing. “Ah, just thinking that I have a brother who is a professor, I—”
“No… I’m just going for a Master’s. How does that make me a professor?” Chen Kongqing wiped imaginary sweat from his brow.
“That’s still impressive! How many people get a government sponsorship?” Gao Tianyou said. “It’s just that you’ll be abroad for so long. Sigh.”
“Yeah, I heard the food over there is terrible. Eat more today while you can,” Du Song said, piling food into Chen Kongqing’s bowl. “Once you’re there, you have to stay safe.” Du Song was now a struggling graduate student himself, and his words carried the air of a concerned parent.
Chen Kongqing nodded. “I will, Senior.”
“Where’s your Dr. Xu?” Gao Tianyou asked while eating fruit.
Chen Kongqing slurped a bit of crab roe tofu. “He went to the hospital today to hand over his duties.”
Du Song: “Is he seeing you off?”
Chen Kongqing nodded.
Old Mo: “So you guys are starting a long-distance relationship.”
“Mhm.” Chen Kongqing pursed his lips. He didn’t know why, but hearing the words “long-distance relationship” felt like facing a formidable enemy. He wasn’t worried about their feelings; he just hated the thought of not seeing him for a long time.
The more Chen Kongqing thought about it, the more worried he became. When he worried, he drank a lot. And, without exception, he got drunk.
…
When Xu Jingmo received the call, he had finished his handover at the hospital.
“Finished eating? Should I pick you up?” Xu Jingmo knew Chen Kongqing was at a party, so he asked naturally.
But it wasn’t Chen Kongqing’s voice on the line; it was Gao Tianyou’s. “Hello, Dr. Xu? Kongqing drank too much. You should come get him.”
Xu Jingmo quickened his pace to the car. “Okay. Please send me the address. I’m coming right now.”
He followed the GPS and arrived at the restaurant. He saw Gao Tianyou propping up Chen Kongqing. Chen Kongqing was waving at Gao Tianyou’s phone screen. “Hi, Captain Zhang… long time… long time no see.”
The drunk rabbit had a flushed face and couldn’t stand straight, yet he was smiling brilliantly at the person on the phone.
“Kongqing, I heard you’re leaving… Wishing you a safe journey.” Zhang Cheng greeted him warmly in the video call.
Chen Kongqing’s eyes crinkled with his smile. He wanted to say something, but a powerful force suddenly wrapped around his waist.
“Nng…” In the next instant, he was pulled away. He could no longer see Zhang Cheng on the screen. Immediately following was a familiar scent of Earl Grey tea.
The squinting rabbit looked up to see who the man holding him was.
Wow. It’s Xu Jingmo.
Chen Kongqing leaned in, clinging tightly to Xu Jingmo and nuzzling his face into the man’s chest. “I miss you so much.”
Gao Tianyou was holding back a laugh, rubbing his nose as he watched the two playfully. Chen Kongqing realized he hadn’t finished his greetings and struggled slightly in Xu Jingmo’s arms. “I… I haven’t finished my video call…”
“What call? We’re going home.” Xu Jingmo’s brow furrowed. He tightened his grip on the boy’s waist and nodded politely to Gao Tianyou. “I’ll take him home then.”
“Go ahead, go ahead!” Gao Tianyou nodded with a grin.
He watched as the “melted” Chen Kongqing was carried away. Gao Tianyou couldn’t help but laugh. “He’s quite protective of his food.”
As time had passed, Zhang Cheng had long let go of his feelings for Chen Kongqing. He also joked in the video, “He’s always been like that…”
…
Chen Kongqing was carried to the car and stuffed into the passenger seat without any strength to resist. Xu Jingmo buckled his seatbelt. The movement wasn’t exactly rough, but it wasn’t gentle either. He seemed angry.
Even though he was drunk, Chen Kongqing could sense that Xu Jingmo’s mood was off. Once the man sat in the driver’s seat, Chen Kongqing followed the scent and fumbled his way over, grabbing the man’s sturdy arm. He wanted to speak, but couldn’t organize his words.
“Sit properly. I’m driving.” Xu Jingmo glanced sideways at the restless drunk rabbit strapped in by the seatbelt.
“What’s wrong?” Chen Kongqing exhaled a breath of alcohol. “Why so… so mean?”
The icy chill in Xu Jingmo’s eyes dissipated slightly. “Sit still.”
Only then did Chen Kongqing obediently let go of his arm. With the arm lightened, Xu Jingmo’s heart suddenly felt empty. He had been suppressing this hollow feeling for a long time.
Chen Kongqing was leaving. Leaving his side to go to a wider world. He shouldn’t stop him; he shouldn’t even show his reluctance. Xu Jingmo gripped the steering wheel tight, the gloom in his eyes rising again.
Chen Kongqing, sleeping in the passenger seat, knew nothing of this. He was heavily intoxicated and fell into a deep sleep the moment the car moved. He had no memory of how he got back to the apartment.
When he opened his eyes again, everything was a blur. He vaguely felt his clothes being stripped off one by one, and his neck and collarbone being licked wetly.
“Nng…” It was ticklish. He instinctively tried to run, but he was pinned down even tighter. His chaotic consciousness slowly returned. “No… tickles.”
Then, a heavy, sharp bite landed on his neck.
Chen Kongqing cried out, bracing his hands to push away the man who felt like a mountain on top of him. But his hands were caught and pinned above his head. In the darkness, only their tangled, frantic breaths remained.
Xu Jingmo’s voice was low, his emotions unreadable. “Chen Kongqing.”
Called by name, Chen Kongqing cleared his head a bit more. “Mmh…”
“You are mine,” Xu Jingmo said, though his tone lacked certainty.
Instead, Chen Kongqing spoke with absolute conviction: “I am yours… and you are mine.”
“I am yours,” Xu Jingmo buried his face in the hollow of the boy’s shoulder, repeating it. Then, he suddenly said darkly, “I really want to make you mine in every way. To let everyone know you belong to me.”
Chen Kongqing hummed twice. “I am. I’m yours.”
“I want to get you pregnant.” Xu Jingmo had only just realized how “twisted” he could become. “I want to marry you, have children, and make it so you can only see me, only video call me.”
At this moment, that was his only thought. The only thought was to make Chen Kongqing belong entirely to him.
Chen Kongqing’s head was still muddled by alcohol. Hearing about “having children,” he didn’t feel any shame. Instead, he opened his lips to play along with the role: “Then, Husband… you have to *** before that’s possible.”
