Chapter 52: Shura Field (The Battlefield of Jealousy)
“Yes, it’s… the captain of the basketball team. Dr. Xu, you should have met him before at our gathering,” Chen Kongqing replied truthfully, though he didn’t quite understand why Dr. Xu was asking about the gender.
Xu Jingmo’s lips remained pressed in a tight line, though his tone was as flat as ever: “So, are you going out tomorrow?”
Chen Kongqing nodded: “I suppose so.”
“Tomorrow is New Year’s Day,” Xu Jingmo murmured. His volume was much lower, sounding like a private lament to himself.
But Chen Kongqing heard it. He could hear the sigh hidden in that murmur and couldn’t help but think… If I leave, will Dr. Xu be all alone?
He licked his lips and asked softly, “Dr. Xu, do you have no plans for tomorrow?”
“Mm.” Xu Jingmo forced a smile. “My friends aren’t in Kun City. I was originally thinking of using the oven to bake a cake with you? You mentioned wanting to try it before, so I bought the ingredients. But… if you’re going to a movie, you should go.”
The man’s tone was gentle, as if worried about burdening the Rabbit. He added, “I’ll be fine.”
But… the more Xu Jingmo spoke like this, the guiltier the Rabbit felt. Dr. Xu had stayed to spend the New Year with him and had planned for the two of them to bake together… even knowing there was a prior engagement, he was still being so good-natured about letting him go.
The youth pursed his lips, unable to think of a good solution for a moment. He had already promised Zhang Cheng, and Zhang Cheng had already booked the tickets.
But… Chen Kongqing looked up slightly. The man beside him had his eyes downcast. His eyelashes were long and thick; when they drooped, they veiled Xu Jingmo’s usual sharp edges and aura, adding a hint of fragility.
He was clearly a solid “iron plate,” but at this moment, Chen Kongqing felt the iron plate had become something breakable.
The Rabbit tried to speak several times but swallowed his words each time. The man’s hand, hidden at his side, had unclenched; his fingers tapped the sofa rhythmically.
“What movie are you seeing?”
“Just that comedy that’s popular lately,” the Rabbit blinked.
“Oh, I know it. I actually wanted to see it too.” The man’s fingers continued to tap lightly, as if playing an invisible abacus. “Do you mind if I join? If you do, it’s fine—I’ll just stay home and drop you off later.”
Chen Kongqing hesitated for two seconds. Dr. Xu’s words put his own status so low, and with his eyes downcast, he looked like he would accept any outcome.
He truly couldn’t say no. He bit his lip and, deciding not to care about the complications, agreed: “Sure, let’s watch it together.”
The phoenix eyes that had been downcast finally lifted, shimmering with light: “Good. Then we go together tomorrow.”
The Rabbit nodded, thinking he would tell Zhang Cheng after the countdown…
With that distraction, time flew by. Finally, it reached 12:00 AM.
Fireworks soared outside the window again—more numerous and more brilliant than before.
Bang! Whoosh!
“Black Cat Detective,” curled up on the rug, seemed startled by the noise. It jumped up, ran two frantic laps around the carpet, and let out several “meows,” as if competing with the fireworks outside. Finding it couldn’t win the shouting match, it flicked its tail and dashed to Chen Kongqing’s feet.
Meanwhile, Xu Jingmo was preparing himself. He was thinking of what to say in this atmosphere—perhaps casually mentioning “spending next year together” again.
The man opened his lips, but before a sound could come out, the Rabbit beside him had already scooped up the cat and walked away.
“Meow, are you scared?” Chen Kongqing thought the cat was frightened, so he bent down to pick it up. He paced around the living room like he was soothing a baby, covering the cat’s ears: “Don’t be scared, I’ll protect you.”
Xu Jingmo, sitting on the sofa, swallowed every word he had prepared: “…”
That “Green Tea Cat” was still faking it, snuggling into the Rabbit’s arms and letting out high-pitched “meows.”
The man’s eyes grew dark as he stared at the cat. The little cat lounged leisurely in Chen Kongqing’s embrace, gave two “meows,” and then shot Xu Jingmo a look with its pitch-black eyes.
That look clearly said: “Human, I only had to exert a tiny bit of effort~”
Yes. On the first day of the New Year, Xu Jingmo suffered from insomnia.
Why, whether it’s humans or cats, does everyone want to steal my Rabbit?
His Rabbit, meanwhile, was curled up by the bed, drowsy. After getting a reply from Zhang Cheng saying it was fine to bring a friend, his head tilted and he fell into a deep sleep.
…
The next day, because they stayed up late for the countdown, the Rabbit didn’t wake up until near noon. As soon as he rose, he saw that it was actually snowing outside.
Chen Kongqing hopped out of bed and went to the window. Snowflakes were drifting down from the sky, and a thin layer of frost had already accumulated on the greenery. Excitedly, he ran out of the bedroom to tell Xu Jingmo.
The moment he stepped out, the aroma of food hit his nose. Steaming dishes were already set on the dining table.
Xu Jingmo emerged from the kitchen: “You woke up just in time. Come eat.”
It was snowing outside; inside, the heater was on, and a stunning 190cm handsome man was wearing an apron, having prepared a beautiful meal. And today was the first day of the New Year.
Chen Kongqing didn’t know how to describe the feeling. He rarely even had dreams this beautiful—yet this was reality. Even if it was “limited time” like a dream, he was still very happy.
The Rabbit ate two large bowls of rice in high spirits. Then, the two began to get ready to head out.
Chen Kongqing changed into a light-colored cotton coat with a fur collar. He didn’t put on any extra styling; he just grabbed his dark athletic crossbody bag and waited obediently in the living room for Dr. Xu to come downstairs.
About ten minutes later, the Rabbit was getting a bit tired of playing with the cat. He heard rhythmic footsteps from the stairs.
A pair of long legs descended step by step. The man was wearing a classic knee-length cashmere coat with medium-width lapels and a row of natural horn buttons. Underneath was a light blue Oxford shirt. Even the mechanical watch on his wrist had been swapped for a rose-gold piece that gleamed with a metallic luster.
Chen Kongqing didn’t know much about watches or clothes and couldn’t recognize luxury brands, but he could tell this outfit was very expensive.
Xu Jingmo walked down the stairs, naturally adjusting his cuffs. The Rabbit was wearing a light blue coat today, which made his exposed skin look even more translucent and fair, like a peeled egg. He had no other accessories.
Xu Jingmo pursed his lips. So, the Rabbit probably doesn’t care much about that ‘Captain’ person, right?
But the Rabbit didn’t need to dress up; even in such casual clothes, he radiated a fresh, magnetic pull. The man licked his teeth. However, the Rabbit was currently staring at him without moving.
This outfit had been meticulously put together. He figured the Rabbit must like looking at it. He relaxed his lips and allowed a curve to form at the corner of his mouth: “Why are you staring at me?”
Chen Kongqing blinked and said seriously, “Dr. Xu, you’ll definitely be cold dressed like that. The shirt is too thin, the collar is so low, and it’s snowing outside.”
Xu Jingmo: “…”
The Rabbit continued earnestly: “Does Dr. Xu have a scarf? Go get one quickly.”
“…” The smile on the man’s face slowly froze. “It’s fine, I feel okay.”
“Mmh, I have one, freshly washed.” Thinking of something, Chen Kongqing ran back to his bedroom before Xu Jingmo could reply.
He came out holding a cream-colored cashmere scarf with a tiny carrot embroidered on the corner. The Rabbit looked up, holding the scarf, and draped it around the man’s neck. He wrapped it round and round and tied a simple knot: “This is more like it.”
A perfect “Old Money” aesthetic was instantly ruined by this carrot scarf.
Xu Jingmo said nothing. He simply buried his nose into the scarf. It smelled so good—entirely of Chen Kongqing.
Only after the scarf was on did the Rabbit allow the man to leave. They entered the elevator side by side and headed for the underground parking lot.
The trip was fine—the car had a heater. It wasn’t until they stepped out into the open air that Chen Kongqing felt the true temperature of a Kun City snow day.
It was freezing. But the snowflakes were beautiful—individual ice crystals carved by nature. Chen Kongqing reached out, and a snowflake settled steadily on his palm before melting bit by bit in the warmth.
“Kongqing-er!” Zhang Cheng appeared from somewhere and ran toward Chen Kongqing at the plaza entrance.
The Rabbit looked down from the sky and focused on the source of the voice: “Captain Zhang.”
“What a coincidence! I was just about to message you.” Zhang Cheng scratched his head and laughed, showing a row of white teeth. “Are you cold? Let’s get inside quickly.”
“Oh…” Chen Kongqing was about to say that Xu Jingmo had gone to park and he needed to wait, when a tall figure entered his field of vision.
Xu Jingmo had already walked up to him: “Look at you, your nose is red from the cold.”
“Mmh, really?” Chen Kongqing rubbed his nose. He could barely feel the tip of it, haha.
“Your hands are very red, too,” the man said, his brow furrowing slightly.
Chen Kongqing felt a bit embarrassed and wanted to say he was fine, it was just that his skin was thin. Before he could speak, Xu Jingmo had already unwrapped the scarf from his own neck. He moved from the side to the front of the Rabbit.
With gentle movements, he wrapped the scarf around the Rabbit’s snow-white neck, once, twice. He smoothed the edges with a natural, fluid motion: “This cotton coat of yours is too thin. Are you wearing thermal underwear?”
“I am… I’m wearing it.” Chen Kongqing was flustered, especially since Zhang Cheng was standing right there.
Zhang Cheng stood aside, unable to get a single word in. For some reason, as soon as Xu Jingmo appeared, he felt like he had been relegated to a background character. Their interactions and dialogue radiated an intimacy that seemed to spill out unintentionally.
Xu Jingmo’s presence and style were indeed outstanding—a handmade cashmere coat, a limited-edition luxury watch. Zhang Cheng stared at that watch for a few seconds before looking up thoughtfully.
As he looked up, he happened to collide with Xu Jingmo’s cold, shadowy gaze.
Xu Jingmo’s hand still lingered on the scarf at Chen Kongqing’s neck, appearing to adjust the folds, but every movement carried an intense air of possessiveness.
Zhang Cheng suddenly understood. This wasn’t “unintentional.”
Xu Jingmo was doing this on purpose.
