Chapter 39: “It’s still very wet here, Teacher Chen.”
Xu Jingmo stood slightly in front of Chen Kongqing.
Chen Kongqing couldn’t see the expression on Xu Jingmo’s face; he could only hear that the man’s voice was a bit more serious than when speaking to him, yet still calm. However, he could clearly see Gu Chengjing standing opposite them.
Gu Chengjing’s expression visibly froze, and the momentum he had used to block their path instantly vanished.
The rabbit watched the shift in Gu Chengjing’s demeanor and began analyzing the cause. Why is my aura so much weaker than Dr. Xu’s?
He concluded that it was likely because… Dr. Xu was tall and worked out constantly. He looked like a solid iron plate—and naturally, no one wanted to kick an iron plate.
No… I need to find time to work out too, the rabbit thought. Even if I’m not tall enough, I can still aim to become a small iron plate.
While the rabbit was daydreaming, Gu Chengjing stammered out, “Cousin…”
“Mr. Gu, I don’t believe we have that kind of relationship,” Xu Jingmo interrupted.
He almost never interrupted people; it was a basic principle for a psychiatrist. Personally, he felt it was also basic human courtesy. However, he also believed that courtesy didn’t need to be extended to everyone.
Hearing this, Gu Chengjing’s face didn’t just look stiff—he looked like he’d been slapped. “Ling Xiao and I are together now.”
“And?” Xu Jingmo chuckled softly. “I’m not interested in that. I only want to know what business Mr. Gu has with Chen Kongqing today.”
Gu Chengjing was silenced, his lips pressed tight.
“I’ve already made myself clear,” Chen Kongqing finally found an opening to speak. “I am not pestering Ling Xiao, and I would like to ask you both to stop pestering me.”
The rabbit spoke with his head held high, neither humble nor arrogant. After finishing, he reached out and gave a small tug on the man’s sleeve beside him, whispering, “Let’s go.”
“Okay.” Xu Jingmo could feel the soft, steady pull on his sleeve. His gaze shifted from his cuff to Chen Kongqing behind him. Without another word, the two turned in unison and walked away.
Gu Chengjing watched their retreating backs. They weren’t touching intimately, but for some reason, he felt as if invisible threads were binding them together. He didn’t chase after them; he just clenched his fists, watching the pair who looked inexplicably well-matched.
…
The rain was still quite heavy. Chen Kongqing and Xu Jingmo huddled under a single umbrella. Despite the cold wind, Chen Kongqing didn’t shrink his neck. It was probably because being close to Dr. Xu made him feel warmer.
“Did you come to bring me an umbrella, Dr. Xu?” The rabbit looked up at the man beside him.
“Yes, I saw yours was still in the entryway,” Xu Jingmo replied. “The apartment isn’t far.”
“It’s fine, I would have just waited for the rain to stop. You don’t have to trouble yourself next time.” Although it wasn’t a long drive from Tinglan Mansion, Chen Kongqing still felt it was a hassle.
“It’s a small thing,” Xu Jingmo naturally moved the conversation along. “Are you… okay?”
Why is he asking if I’m okay again?
Chen Kongqing couldn’t help but smile. “I’m fine. I don’t seem to care that much about it anymore; I just find them a bit annoying.”
“Have you thought about… deleting Ling Xiao’s contact info?” Rain tapped rhythmically against the umbrella. The man’s Adam’s apple rolled slightly. “That way, he might not be able to annoy you as much.”
“I blocked him a long time ago,” Chen Kongqing answered casually.
Xu Jingmo: “Blocked him?”
“Yes, why?” Chen Kongqing blinked. Did Dr. Xu not want me to block him? But surely deleting and blocking were basically the same thing.
“Nothing. That’s good.”
The rain suddenly intensified, the sound becoming fierce and noisy, masking the satisfaction in the man’s tone. Because it was so heavy, the two of them had to stay close under the umbrella. Despite this, they didn’t escape getting wet. Chen Kongqing was mostly fine, but a large portion of Xu Jingmo’s shoulder was soaked.
Upon returning, the man went to the bathroom to shower first while the rabbit busied himself in the kitchen. Actually, there wasn’t much to do—Dr. Xu had prepared almost everything. The lobster was in the steamer, and the other dishes were on the warming tray.
The rabbit simply removed the foil-wrapped lobster, plated it, and waited obediently for Dr. Xu to finish his shower. Five or six minutes later, the man came downstairs.
Chen Kongqing found the pajamas he was wearing familiar. Then he remembered—those were the ones Dr. Xu had lent him before. When he wore them, the sleeves covered two-thirds of his hands, but on Dr. Xu, they stopped perfectly at the wrists.
They had lived together for about a week now. The injuries on Xu Jingmo’s face had healed, leaving no trace. But this seemed to be the first time the man had appeared before him in pajamas, with unbrushed hair and a somewhat languid gait. He looked relaxed, completely different from the Dr. Xu in a white coat.
The man held a towel, casually drying his damp black hair.
“Go ahead and eat, don’t wait for me.” Xu Jingmo swept his half-dry hair back and sat at the table.
The rabbit’s eyes rounded. “Aren’t you going to blow-dry your hair?”
“It’s fine, it’ll dry eventually,” Xu Jingmo replied, followed by a couple of coughs. “Let’s eat first.”
“That won’t do.” Chen Kongqing was firm. He stood up. “My hair dryer is very fast. I’ll get it for you.”
He understood Dr. Xu; blow-drying hair was indeed a tiring chore. That’s why he had specifically spent a lot of money on a high-velocity, high-efficiency dryer. The youth quickly retrieved it and plugged it into the bathroom outlet downstairs. “Come here, it’s not good if you catch a cold.”
“Okay.” The man walked over, his steps carrying a hint of fatigue.
Chen Kongqing noticed it. Dr. Xu hadn’t just worked all day; he had also made dinner, picked him up from school, and got caught in the rain. He must be tired. And it seemed Dr. Xu really disliked drying his hair.
“I’ll do it for you,” Chen Kongqing said directly, not thinking much of it.
Xu Jingmo’s step faltered for 0.01 seconds, and his lips curved in a barely perceptible smile. “That’s too much trouble for you. No need.”
“What’s troublesome about it?” The helpful rabbit stepped back, signaling the man to stand in front of him.
Xu Jingmo understood perfectly. Despite his verbal refusal, his steps were quick as he positioned himself in front of the youth. In front of the vanity mirror, the rabbit behind him was almost completely obscured. “Can you reach?”
Chen Kongqing looked up at the back of the man’s head. It was indeed a bit of a stretch… but he wouldn’t admit it.
“I… I can reach.” The rabbit switched on the dryer.
With a whirr, warm air surged out. The rabbit directed the nozzle toward the damp black hair while his other hand reached up to the man’s crown. The rabbit’s hand was white and small-boned, looking even paler against the man’s dark hair—like a piece of polished white jade.
Xu Jingmo watched the rabbit’s small hand in the mirror, feeling the warmth and softness of the rabbit’s palm on his head. Soon, the rabbit moved to the front, meticulously drying the hair on the man’s forehead. His expression was serious, more focused than a salon’s lead stylist.
Xu Jingmo lowered his eyes, watching the hardworking rabbit with raised arms. The man’s large hand rested on the cool porcelain of the sink, and he lowered his back slightly to make it easier for the rabbit.
It did make things much easier. Chen Kongqing held the dryer, precisely targeting the spots he’d missed earlier due to the height disadvantage. “Dr. Xu, how tall are you exactly?”
He knew Ling Xiao was about 187cm, but Dr. Xu looked even taller.
Xu Jingmo: “190cm.”
Well… No wonder everyone looked like a tiny figurine standing next to him.
“And you?” the man asked after a beat.
“178cm,” Chen Kongqing said honestly. He wouldn’t round up, even though he lamented those missing two centimeters more than anyone.
Xu Jingmo: “Are your arms tired?”
Chen Kongqing didn’t react immediately. “What?”
“Holding the dryer.” Xu Jingmo looked at the rabbit’s thin arm. “Maybe I should finish it.”
To Chen Kongqing, this sounded like a form of pity after learning he was only 178cm. He was not going to admit to being tired!
The rabbit worked even harder, huffing: “No! Not tired at all. Even if you stand up straight, I can still reach!”
The man smiled slightly. “Is that so?”
The rabbit puffed out his chest. “Of course.”
In the next moment, the man moved. But he didn’t straighten his back; instead, he leaned down even further. The two of them were pulled several centimeters closer.
Those phoenix eyes, hidden beneath layers of messy hair, stared deeply at the rabbit inches away. The rabbit had gained a bit of weight recently; he wasn’t as bony and dry as before. His face looked hydrated and soft.
The whirring of the dryer was in his ears. Aside from the scent of shampoo, the rabbit caught a faint whiff of Earl Grey tea. He instinctively looked up.
And just like that, the rabbit’s eyes were drawn into those phoenix eyes hidden under the fringe. Those eyes looked as if they had been washed by water, carrying a dampness rarely seen. The thick lashes seemed to hold a bit of moisture.
The perfect eye shape and the ink-colored pupils looked so much like the eyes he often dreamed of—closer even than Ling Xiao’s. The rabbit felt as if he were sinking into those dark pupils; for a moment, even his breathing slowed. The hand resting on Xu Jingmo’s hair stopped moving.
Several seconds passed.
The rabbit finally broke free from the gaze. Just as he was about to get back to work, the hand resting on Xu Jingmo’s head was suddenly covered by a scorching palm. The temperature of the palm was warmer than the air from the dryer.
The rabbit’s soft hand was covered. Then, the grip tightened, slowly moving his hand.
For some reason, the rabbit’s heart began drumming—thump-thump-thump. He instinctively wanted to pull away, but his hand was held tight.
“It’s still very wet here, Teacher Chen.”
