Deliberate Possession [Entertainment Industry] - Chapter 12
Chapter 12: Cousin
Jing Xiaoyan raised her lips in a smile. After Su Mumu confirmed she wasn’t “straight,” she was in a good mood. Her heart finally felt a little more at ease.
Jing Xiaoyan smiled: “Let’s take it naturally.”
As soon as she said this, she noticed Jiang Yumian’s back stiffen. Jing Xiaoyan then added, “I mean the CP thing. Whether we have chemistry as a CP is up to the fans to decide. Let’s just go with the flow. If the impact becomes too great, my team will manage it.”
She knew that Jiang Yumian was sensible. With a “girlfriend,” she definitely wouldn’t start a CP with anyone else. She had her principles.
So, it was better for her to clarify herself.
Jiang Yumian’s stiff body relaxed. She thought Jing Xiaoyan meant to “go with the flow” about Su Mumu’s suggestion for them to settle for each other. She absolutely couldn’t do that.
If it were true, she would stay far away from Jing Xiaoyan.
Su Mumu nodded, “That’s true. Too much impact is not good.”
“Mhm. I actually don’t recommend using the CP route to gain followers. Actors should let their work speak for itself,” Jing Xiaoyan’s expression became much more serious when she said this. “But it’s inevitable that fans will ship us, and that can’t be stopped.”
Jiang Yumian nodded in agreement. What she said made sense.
Seeing that Jing Xiaoyan didn’t seem to like the idea of forming a CP with her, the worry in her heart dissipated. Jing Xiaoyan was just beautiful, kind, and enthusiastic. I really am narcissistic.
“Teacher Jing is right, but I don’t really care. Anyway, my fans all think I can’t be in a relationship.” Jiang Yumian had a relaxed smile on her face, and her gaze towards Jing Xiaoyan became much more genuine. Before the other woman could ask, she answered directly: “Because they say funny girls don’t deserve love.”
Although she was unhappy with the title, Jing Xiaoyan was amused. Didn’t she say yesterday that she wasn’t a funny girl?
Su Mumu resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Then why don’t you hurry up and save some face? Wouldn’t it be better to let your looks speak for you? Just stand there and keep your mouth shut. It’s so simple.”
This playful exchange lightened the mood considerably. Everyone relaxed. Jing Xiaoyan rested her elbow on the sofa, propping up her head and sitting sideways, facing Jiang Yumian. She teased, “Teacher Mianmian looks quite introverted. Why would her fans call her a funny girl?”
Jiang Yumian was covered in black lines. Listen to that. If those words don’t show she has a misunderstanding about me, then she’s just making fun of me.
She gave Jing Xiaoyan a resentful look, “Teacher Jing has a keen eye. I also think I’m quite introverted.”
Whether she was introverted or not, she had only ever mentioned it to her good sister. She didn’t expect to be teased about it.
Jiang Yumian looked at the person in front of her twice, her eyes filled with scrutiny.
“If she’s introverted, are there any truly introverted people left in the world?” Su Mumu twitched her mouth, then complained, “You two calling each other ‘Teacher’—isn’t that awkward?”
She had initially thought that since she had only met Jing Xiaoyan once, she should be polite when speaking. But after Chu Qianyun arrived, Su Mumu dropped all pretense and spoke more casually.
Jiang Yumian didn’t mind the address “Teacher Mianmian.” She had already realized that Jing Xiaoyan was calling her that on purpose. She understood the hint.
Jing Xiaoyan continued to prop up her head, smiling warmly at Jiang Yumian, “Yes, it is awkward.”
Facing Jing Xiaoyan, Jiang Yumian opened her mouth and deliberated for a long time. Whether it was “Sister Xiaoyan” or “Sister Yanyan,” she felt inexplicably unable to say it. It felt even more awkward, even a bit resistant.
She struggled for a long time, finally giving a noncommittal reply: “It is awkward. Let’s not call each other ‘Teacher’ anymore.”
Thinking she might have been holding back some nice words, Jing Xiaoyan lowered the hand propping up her head, gently hummed, and smiled with pursed lips. She guessed Jiang Yumian wouldn’t actively call her anything for the next few days.
She had self-awareness. After all, if she treated her as her daughter, what sister should she call her?
Although depressed, some things had to be taken slowly. First, she needed Jiang Yumian to change her perspective of her.
The road from “daughter” to “wife” was long.
It’s hard…
In the evening, the four of them went out for dinner together. Although they were heavily masked, given their presence, would any seasoned paparazzi fail to spot them?
On the way back, they simply took off their masks. Su Mumu even flashed a peace sign at the camera she found and pulled Jiang Yumian along to look for the paparazzi.
It was fine for them to be photographed now. The director was probably thrilled; he didn’t even need to spend money on promotion.
Back in the room, Jiang Yumian checked the trending topics. With the addition of the other two, she finally didn’t have to be the sole object of ridicule, as the fans’ attention was largely divided.
She added Jing Xiaoyan on her work WeChat today. She guessed the other person’s was also a work WeChat; there were no moments, utterly clean.
She glanced at the group chat, which was currently empty, then opened and immediately exited.
Returning to her private WeChat, Jiang Yumian initiated a call to her girlfriend. She had neglected her rich sister today and hadn’t spent much time with her.
However, the call rang for a long time with no answer until it automatically hung up.
Jiang Yumian frowned. Is she asleep?
Highly unlikely.
She didn’t think her thoughtful girlfriend would go to sleep without telling her. Someone who told her even when she was eating wouldn’t miss saying goodnight.
Jing Xiaoyan looked at her phone. She didn’t not want to answer, she dared not.
Relatively speaking, after spending a day with her, Jiang Yumian was somewhat familiar with her tone and pitch. If she answered the call and chatted for a couple of minutes, she would likely be suspected.
Until the other side called again, Jing Xiaoyan sighed. I guess I have to answer. Just this one.
Seeing the call connect, Jiang Yumian’s heart leaped with joy. She obediently greeted her: “Sister.”
Jing Xiaoyan smiled: “Mhm, I was taking a shower just now.”
Her voice was soft and gentle, a little lower in pitch, but in Jiang Yumian’s ears, it still caused a momentary daze.
Unsure what to say, and seeing that the other person was silent, Jiang Yumian was quiet for two seconds before asking softly, “Are you going to sleep?”
A light sigh came from the other side. Jiang Yumian froze. Is she unhappy?
Jing Xiaoyan was silent for a while. “I’m a little tired today. I had some last-minute work, so I’ll be going to sleep soon.”
She wasn’t going to sleep, but she was afraid that if she talked more, she would be discovered, so it was better to end the call quickly.
Jiang Yumian was relieved. It’s good that she’s not unhappy.
However, the more she listened to the voice, the more she felt something was off.
Jing Xiaoyan: “I have another call coming in. I’ll hang up first. Let’s chat by text.”
Jiang Yumian wanted to say something more, but finally gave up. “Okay, Sister. You go do what you need to do.”
She really wanted to chat with her sister for a while. They had known each other for a day or two, and she quite enjoyed talking to her.
First Love Sister: “It’s just a small matter. I’m not busy. Let’s chat by text.”
Jiang Yumian sighed. She still felt something was amiss. She tilted her head and looked toward Jing Xiaoyan’s room. She wouldn’t feel at ease if she didn’t ask a certain question.
Sponge has Baby: “Are you two really not the same person?”
After sending it, she felt the question was inappropriate and quickly withdrew it, rephrasing her question.
Sponge has Baby: “I think your voices sound super, super similar.”
Jing Xiaoyan closed her eyes, sighed deeply again, and continued to play dumb.
First Love Sister: “Are you talking about me and Jing Xiaoyan?”
Sponge has Baby: “Yes!”
First Love Sister: “We do sound alike. Before, my cousin even asked me to impersonate her and record a birthday message for her classmate.”
First Love Sister: “Her classmate is a fan.”
Jiang Yumian blinked. Oh, I see…
It’s not impossible to have people with similar voices.
With this explanation, Jiang Yumian actually believed her.
Sponge has Baby: “Did her classmate find out?”
First Love Sister: “I’m not sure. I don’t know the follow-up.”
First Love Sister: “Coincidentally, if you get a chance, help me find her and see if she can record a genuine one. It feels bad to fool people.”
Jiang Yumian was now completely convinced. They really just had similar voices.
Sponge has Baby: “That’s easy. But you help me with a favor too, Sister.”
First Love Sister: “What favor?”
Sponge has Baby: “Send me a voice message, call me ‘baby,’ and say you like me.”
Jing Xiaoyan’s hand trembled. She was a little confused. What is this all about?
Jiang Yumian smiled with narrowed eyes. This cousin’s method is good. It even gave me inspiration. She could send the message to her mother later to fool her too.
She suddenly felt that her girlfriend’s voice sounding like Jing Xiaoyan was a great thing, so convenient.
Jing Xiaoyan had no idea that the story she casually made up had actually been picked up by Jiang Yumian. The cousin was real, but the cousin’s classmate had now become the cousin’s mother.
Sponge has Baby: “Is that not okay, Sister? Is it that hard, Sister? Am I not your little girlfriend? Is it that hard to say you like me?!”
Jing Xiaoyan scratched her face, a bit lost.
Is she losing her mind?
