- Chapter 40 - Heading to the Valley
Yuo Shiyi lowered her head and raised her hand, pretending to brush her hair to hide her awkwardness.
To be honest, she somewhat admired Min Xueren’s persistence. Yuo Shiyi was the second female lead of Unstained Wind and Moon, and her fame was a bit lower than Min Xueren’s. However, the fame of the four of them combined was practically nothing compared to the regular guests of Late Countryside. This included Li Yue, who had debuted only half a year ago, the impact of her viral stage performance far exceeded the years they had spent grinding in the industry.
Because Unstained Wind and Moon was set to be released on the Mingyue TV video app soon, they had the opportunity to promote it on Late Countryside. However, they only had one day and one night from this afternoon until tomorrow afternoon.
Thus, Min Xueren’s repeated “proactive” attempts felt quite pointed in their intent.
As a fellow actor from Unstained Wind and Moon, Yuo Shiyi mustered her courage and said, “It’s quite interesting, haha.”
Wu Xuezhen smiled and asked the guest stars, “Are you tired after coming all this way? Do you need a rest? We can help you move your luggage up. Do you want to sleep upstairs or downstairs?”
The two male guests immediately replied, “We can do it ourselves.”
“You two young men can sleep on the first floor. My wife and I sleep on the east side of the first floor; why don’t you two take the guest room on the west side?” Pi Dajun suggested.
“Sounds good!”
“Then we’ll sleep upstairs. That’s great! We get to sleep on the same floor as Sister Luo and Sister Li!” Min Xueren said happily.
Luo Mingzi tilted her head, just about to speak, when Li Yue suddenly reached out and grabbed Luo Mingzi’s wrist, pressing the cup in her hand against her lips.
“Drink water.”
“Mmph.”
Luo Mingzi held the water and took a big gulp, glancing unobtrusively at the two female guests. Pi Dajun led the two men to see their rooms, while Wu Xuezhen attended to the two girls.
As Min Xueren and Yuo Shiyi pushed their suitcases toward the stairs, Wu Xuezhen said, “Wait, let the boys help you carry the suitcases up when they come out.” Min Xueren licked the corner of her mouth, flashed a brilliant smile, and turned to the two people huddled together in the living room: “Big Sister Li, could I please ask you to help us carry our suitcases? I saw on the show that you are very strong!”
“Blub.” A small bubble popped in Luo Mingzi’s water; she let out a very soft hum.
Big Sister Li.
Li Yue tapped Luo Mingzi’s water cup and said, “Finish it.”
Only then did she step forward and walk over to the guests.
Wu Xuezhen felt her “motherly” instincts kicking in. She said with a bit of concern, “Better let your Uncle Dajun and the others do it.” The stairs were high, and those were two large suitcases!
“It’s fine,” Li Yue said. She looked at Min Xueren. “Let go.”
Min Xueren put on an embarrassed expression and whispered, “Big Sister Li, let me help you carry it.”
“No need.” Li Yue hooked the suitcase from Min Xueren’s hand, lifted it effortlessly, and strode upstairs. She placed the suitcase at the top of the stairs, it landed with a very soft thud.
She walked back down and gestured toward Yuo Shiyi.
Yuo Shiyi didn’t know whether to let go or hold on. In a moment of quick thinking, she hoisted her suitcase and started walking up, saying, “Haha, I brought very little, it’s not heavy at all, haha!”
Wu Xuezhen watched with amusement and said, “This girl is quite funny when she laughs. What was your name again?” Yuo Shiyi quickly turned around, “Yuo Shiyi! Teacher Wu, my name is Yuo Shiyi. You can call me Xiao Yuo, Xiao Shi, or Xiao Yi, anything is fine.”
Min Xueren glanced at Yuo Shiyi and said with a giggle, “Sister Xuezhen, you guys don’t know, Shiyi has a very memorable nickname: Squid (Youyu).” After saying that, she immediately added, “Little Squid, it’s very cute!”
Yuo Shiyi whispered, “That was just a random nickname people gave me back in elementary school.”
By the table, Luo Mingzi set her water cup down and sat back casually, staring blankly at the ceiling. She listened to their conversation and curled her lips into a smirk.
Wu Xuezhen looked back at her and whispered, “What are you giggling at, you silly child?”
Li Yue walked down with her hands in her pockets and remarked casually, “It’s easy to remember. A fish swimming around (Youlai youqu de yu).”
Yuo Shiyi looked back at Li Yue, gripped the handle of her suitcase, smiled, and pushed the suitcase into the left hallway. “Xueren, let’s stay on this side.”
Min Xueren froze, then ran up anxiously, looking toward the right side with reluctance.
She had actually only watched one episode of Late Countryside, the one with the highest viewership and widest reach, which happened to be the episode where Li Yue first appeared as a guest. Moreover, that episode was split into two parts, the two days Li Yue participated took up the entirety of the first part. Although she appeared at the beginning of the second part, the view count of the first part far exceeded the others. In Min Xueren’s eyes, the success of that episode was largely due to Luo Mingzi.
But Luo Mingzi’s personality was famous in the industry, she was someone who absolutely would not “play along.” Min Xueren originally hadn’t had any other thoughts, but she hadn’t expected Li Yue to become a permanent guest on Late Countryside!
She didn’t dare “provoke” Luo Mingzi, but she could borrow a bit of Li Yue’s spotlight. Since Li Yue could play up a “CP” (couple pairing) with Luo Mingzi, it meant she didn’t mind that sort of thing. Although Min Xueren wasn’t as famous as Luo Mingzi, she wasn’t a nobody either, and she had an upcoming drama. This kind of mutually beneficial arrangement was perfectly fine.
However, from the moment they met until now, Min Xueren had only felt a subtle, calm coldness from Li Yue, which left her feeling incredibly frustrated. What was even more annoying was that when she ran into Yuo Shiyi at the airport, she had specifically told her to choose the guest room on the right side of the second floor, where Luo Mingzi and Li Yue were to better interact with the permanent guests.
Did Yuo Shiyi forget, or was she just dense?
She truly deserves to stay obscure.
Min Xueren grabbed her suitcase and smiled, “Oh, at home my bedroom is always on the east side. I want to sleep on the east side.”
By the stairs, Wu Xuezhen pulled Li Yue over, straightened her hem, and whispered, “You’re the clever one.”
Li Yue looked at the slender legs sticking out from the sofa and shook her head.
Not as clever as the “Goddess” Luo.
Wu Xuezhen patted Li Yue’s arm and looked up at the two female guests on the second floor. “You two decide where to sleep first and drop off your bags. You can unpack when we get back tonight. It’s a bit hot today, but luckily the peak heat of the day has passed. This afternoon we’re going to the valley to play, and tonight we’ll have a barbecue by the river.”
“The valley?” Pi Dajun came out with the male guests and said excitedly, “Are we going in the water?”
Li Xiao said bluntly, “No wonder the manager told us to bring swimsuits!”
Lying on the sofa, Luo Mingzi swung her legs. She thought to herself: Is Sister Liu short on money? Did ‘Unstained Wind and Moon’ pay a huge promotion fee? She drawled out her dissatisfaction, “Ah… but there are so many mosquitoes by the river, I don’t want to go!”
“We’ll light the mosquito coils in advance. I may not know how to cook, but I’m great at grilling. Li Yue hasn’t tasted my grilling skills yet, has she? I’ll show you today!” Pi Dajun rubbed his hands together.
Luo Mingzi thought about it and realized he was right. She stopped swinging her legs and climbed up from the sofa happily. “Okay!”
Most importantly, if they were going into the water in the valley, she would have to wear a swimsuit!
Luo Mingzi leaned on the back of the sofa, cupping her face and smiling at Li Yue.
A swimsuit, oh!
