Chapter 15: The Sixth Day of Maintaining the Villain Persona~
As soon as Wen Qingyun spoke, the comment section exploded. The live viewership steadily climbed from a hundred thousand to several hundred thousand.
In the control room, the director grinned at the rising metrics. Ignoring the heated arguments in the chat, he continued to instruct the other observers via earpiece to keep throwing topics at Wen Qingyun.
This request put the other observers in a difficult position. This was a dating show, after all; they weren’t supposed to be the main characters. However, they couldn’t refuse the director. Finding nothing interesting in the footage of the “non-celebrity” guests, they had no choice but to focus on Wen Qingyun.
“Teacher Wen, you seem to have a penchant for lucky draws lately. Is it because of something happy that happened, or just to give back to the fans?” Observer No. 1 asked.
“Both,” Wen Qingyun replied after a few seconds of thought. She reached toward the camera and made a small finger-heart. “I’m very happy to be loved by so many lovely female fans. When I’m happy, I want to respond to them with a lucky draw.”
Observer No. 2 chimed in: “I heard Teacher Wen encountered an ‘accident’ during a recent show recording. If you could choose again, would you still participate in that program?”
“Probably. Despite the unpleasant experience, I met a decent person,” Wen Qingyun said. Thinking of the final expression on Chu Ke’s face, her lips curled slightly. “In my view, she’s a bit silly—always wasting her time on unnecessary people and things—but I still quite liked working with her.”
Observer No. 2, who had seen the previous livestream, immediately connected the “decent person” to Chu Ke. “Does Teacher Wen feel that she shouldn’t have done those things?”
Wen Qingyun turned to look at the observer, her brow arched in clear disapproval.
“No. It’s just that I wouldn’t do it; that doesn’t mean I negate her actions. She is pursuing a career she loves and working toward her own goals. I have no right to judge her.”
“Most people can’t even master their own lives, so they should stop trying to interfere in others’,” Wen Qingyun stated. “I offer that sentence to everyone listening.”
Observer No. 3 interrupted: “If I recall correctly, Teacher Wen just critiqued the height and appearance of the three male guests?”
“Is there a problem? The director paid me to be here precisely to critique them, didn’t he?” Wen Qingyun replied without hesitation.
Observer No. 3 choked on his words but, after receiving a prompt, quickly adjusted his expression. “Didn’t Teacher Wen say we shouldn’t interfere in others’ lives? If so, why did you accept the invitation to this show?”
“Oh, that? I’m here because the show pays quite well,” Wen Qingyun admitted candidly. “I’ve spent a lot of money on lucky draws recently, so I have to work hard to support my studio.”
…
【Fact: Wen Qingyun is working hard for her salary to give back to her fans. I am her ‘wife-fan.’ Therefore, she is working to support me! She really is my wife!】
【Flawless logic. I am now a person with a wife! Wifey, let’s cuddle~】
【Isn’t this ‘strict with others, lenient with oneself’? Wen Qingyun is such a hypocrite. Why does she demand others do what she can’t?】
【Huh? Isn’t that exactly what men love to do? They can’t manage a household themselves, but demand women do it. They won’t give up their careers for family, but demand their wives do so.】
【It’s not the first time she’s been this double-standard. She has two completely different attitudes for women and men.】
…
“Secondly, you’re confusing concepts,” Wen Qingyun continued. “I said ‘don’t interfere,’ not ‘don’t have an opinion.'”
“For example, I might say that you—being under 175cm—are shorter than me. But I won’t tell you to get leg-lengthening surgery, and I certainly won’t break your legs to add an extension to force a change. At most, I’d give a friendly suggestion that you might consider elevator shoes.”
“Do you understand what I mean, ‘Teacher’?” Wen Qingyun asked, her tone incredibly sincere.
Hearing the thinly veiled jab at his height, Observer No. 3’s face instantly darkened. He wanted to argue, but doing so would only make it worse.
“Teacher Wen, I think even for a critique, it shouldn’t be too excessive,” Observer No. 3 forced out.
“Yes, yes, you’re absolutely right,” Wen Qingyun pulled back the corners of her mouth in a mock smile. She shifted her gaze back to the big screen, leaning back into the sofa and crossing her legs casually.
“I will comment on the behavior of these guests, but I won’t force my ideas onto them. Nor will I act like their father, running up to them to say ‘you must choose so-and-so.'”
“I’m not targeting anyone specifically. I’m simply expressing my opposition and condemnation toward those who view an independent person as their property and attempt to control them.”
Wen Qingyun looked perfectly composed, seemingly unbothered by how many people with a “father-complex” she was triggering.
…
Meanwhile, far away in Shishu Village, Chu Ke was staring at her phone with a complex expression.
Wen Qingyun said she was pursuing a career she loved… was that a form of recognition? Did she actually believe Chu Ke could change the village?
Then why did she say such heartless things before? Saying everything in the village had nothing to do with her… was it because she actually cared about Chu Ke a little bit?
Joy, conflict, and sadness flickered across Chu Ke’s face. A previously blank sheet of paper was now covered in the three characters of Wen Qingyun’s name.
Damn it, why did I watch this show? If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t know she talked about me like that! Now I’m overthinking everything instead of just remembering that she’s a liar!
…
【Congratulations Host, task completion has increased. Current progress: 55%.】
The system notification perked Wen Qingyun up slightly. “Can my words really trigger that many thick-skinned people? I didn’t think I was being that aggressive.”
【The protagonist provided about 4% of the progress; the rest combined for less than 1%. Your words caused a major emotional fluctuation in the protagonist, leading her into a state of conflict and distress. It is predicted this state will last for a long time.】
Oh, so Chu Ke provided the bulk of it. Never mind then.
People as upright and kind as Chu Ke are easily moved by small details, leading them to “beautify” others. Just by acknowledging her work, Wen Qingyun had easily shifted Chu Ke’s perception of her.
If I praise her to her face and donate money to help her achieve her goals next time, will she cry from being moved?
Hmm, that sounds pretty good. I wonder if those kinds of tears count toward the task progress.
Wen Qingyun appeared to be watching the screen intently, but in reality, more than half of her mind had already drifted off to Chu Ke.
