- Chapter 11 - Happy One Month Anniversary
The long military training was finally coming to an end.
Pei Xi clenched his fists, resisting the urge to lift his hand and wipe away the sweat trickling down his cheeks.
The official review concluded, and for once, the instructor wasn’t wearing his usual stern expression. A faint, pleased smile appeared on his face. “You all performed very well…”
It was the first time Pei Xi had seen the instructor praise them so effusively. Usually, the instructor kept a stern face and looked quite intimidating.
The instructor’s gaze swept over the crowd before he slowly announced, “Dismissed.”
Cheers instantly erupted from the group.
“Finally, it’s over,” Zhai Jiarui let out a long sigh and rubbed his sore shoulders. “What should we eat for lunch?”
Lin Shaojun stretched lazily. “I heard a new Japanese restaurant opened near campus. Want to try it?”
Lu Li had no particular opinion; he usually just ate whatever Lin Shaojun chose.
Zhai Jiarui slung an arm over Pei Xi’s shoulder. “Third Bro, what do you want to eat?”
“Let’s go for Japanese food, then,” Pei Xi replied. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d stepped into a Japanese restaurant. There were none in Qiaochuan Island; he only had the chance to eat Japanese cuisine when he went into the city with friends.
Lin Shaojun said, “Let’s go. I’m starving.”
As October approached, the weather in Ningcheng had cooled considerably.
Though the sun was still intense, occasional breezes provided some relief.
After the military training ended, the freshman welcome party was next.
There was no mandatory class chorus, only voluntary performances.
The party was held in the school auditorium. By the time they arrived, it had already begun.
Everyone had changed out of their camouflage uniforms into casual clothes, walking toward the auditorium in small groups.
Their computer science department was seated near the center of the auditorium, offering an excellent view of the stage.
Pei Xi noticed that from the moment they appeared at the auditorium entrance, glances kept drifting their way—skimming past him and settling on his three roommates.
He smoothed the bangs over his forehead, covering most of his face, took two steps back to maintain some distance from the three of them, and finally slipped away from the crowd to sit in a corner.
The lights in the auditorium gradually dimmed, leaving only the stage illuminated. The hosts stood on stage, dressed in formal attire, smiling as they introduced the evening’s performances.
“Does anyone from our class have a performance?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Have you noticed how handsome the guys in our class are? Tall, great figures… absolutely perfect!”
“Too bad they hardly ever talk in the class group chat, and their WeChat is impossible to add.”
“I wonder if any of them have girlfriends?”
“The confession wall already dug into them—they’re straight and still single!”
“Should we try adding them on WeChat?”
“No way! Lin Shaojun seems a bit more approachable, but Zhai Jiarui and Lu Li don’t seem like the easygoing type. What if we get rejected? That would be so embarrassing. I’d rather not.”
“Hmm, you’re right.”
Pei Xi leaned against the corner wall, head lowered, listening to the whispers around him.
Suddenly, his three WeChat friend slots felt like hot potatoes.
“I heard they’re all roommates. Handsome guys really do stick together.”
“How lucky is the guy who gets to share a dorm with them?”
“Is Zhai Jiarui looking over here?”
“Who are they looking for?”
“Third!” Zhai Jiarui waved towards Pei Xi in the corner and called out loudly, “Why did you run over there?”
Pei Xi stiffened abruptly, feeling all the surrounding gazes suddenly converge on him. The classmates who had been chatting just moments ago fell silent in surprise, creating an awkward atmosphere. Flustered, he explained, “It was too crowded over there, so I moved here.”
“Alright.” Zhai Jiarui didn’t press him further and returned to his seat.
The street dance performance instantly ignited the atmosphere, with clean, sharp moves drawing cheers from the crowd.
Pei Xi was engrossed in watching when he suddenly felt someone tap his shoulder. He turned his head and saw the classmates who had been discussing his three roommates earlier.
They were now staring at him intently, their eyes gleaming with curiosity.
“…” Pei Xi felt a chill run down his spine. “What’s up?”
One of the classmates glanced around and deliberately lowered her voice. “Um… are you Lu Li’s roommate?”
The music from the stage was deafening, and Pei Xi could only barely make out what she said by reading her lips. It wasn’t hard to guess her intentions, so he nodded anyway.
The two classmates exchanged a look and asked excitedly, “I heard he doesn’t have a girlfriend yet. Is that true?”
Pei Xi was taken aback.
He had known Lu Li for less than a month. He roughly knew that Lu Li was from Beicheng, came from a well-off family, and excelled academically, but he didn’t know much else.
Occasionally, he’d hear snippets about Lu Li from Lin Shaojun’s conversations. As far as he knew, Lu Li probably didn’t have a girlfriend.
“Maybe,” Pei Xi frowned slightly. He didn’t like gossiping about his roommates in private, so he added, “Sorry, I don’t know Lu Li that well.”
The classmates smiled awkwardly and retreated, not pressing further.
As the evening event was about to end, Pei Xi went to the restroom. On his way out, he bumped into a boy.
Both of them froze for a moment.
The boy looked familiar, but Pei Xi couldn’t recall where he’d seen him before.
Did they know each other?
When the boy recognized Pei Xi, a flicker of surprise crossed his face, followed by a displeased frown.
Pei Xi had no memory of the boy and didn’t want to block the doorway. He murmured a quiet “sorry” and hurried to leave.
But the boy tugged at his sleeve, stopping him.
Pei Xi paused. “Is there something?”
The boy’s face flushed slightly, a mix of embarrassment and frustration. “That note I asked you to pass to Lu Li… did you actually give it to him?”
Hearing this, Pei Xi finally remembered where he’d seen him before. As for the note the boy mentioned…
He recalled that Lu Li hadn’t even glanced at it, crumpling it into a ball and tossing it into the trash. The boy had been waiting for Lu Li to add him on WeChat, which was why he doubted whether Pei Xi had actually delivered the note.
Pei Xi glanced at the hand gripping his sleeve and replied calmly, “We handed it directly to Lu Li. Whether he adds you on WeChat or not is his business.”
The boy felt humiliated and reluctantly released his sleeve, muttering softly, “Sorry.”
Pei Xi said nothing more and turned to leave the restroom.
He suddenly felt that his three roommates had quite a lot of romantic entanglements. Just dealing with their suitors every day was enough to annoy him.
Apart from subtly probing him about his three roommates’ preferences, some people even wanted to swap dorm rooms with him.
Ridiculous.
After the party, Pei Xi and Zhai Jiarui packed some late-night snacks and brought them back to the dorm. Lu Li and Lin Shaojun had already left school and gone home half an hour earlier.
Zhai Jiarui planned to stay in Ningcheng for a couple of days before leaving. Pei Xi had bought a ticket for the next day. It was too late today, and he wanted to rest well before taking the nearly four-hour journey home tomorrow.
With two fewer people in the dorm, it suddenly became much quieter.
Zhai Jiarui was playing games, while Pei Xi had already washed up early and was lying in bed, resting.
“Ding dong—”
[You have a new message, please check.]
[User 10557880: Did you have a good day today?]
Pei Xi noticed that [User 10557880] now asked him this question every day.
[There was a welcome party today, it was quite interesting…] He was about to send this message when he suddenly remembered something and deleted it word by word.
He remembered that [User 10557880]’s IP was also in Ningcheng. Being in the same city made it easy to come across videos of their school’s welcome party.
[Xixi: Tired tired.]
[Xixi: Little cat lying down.jpg]
[Xixi: Bought a train ticket for tomorrow.]
[User 10557880: Patting head.jpg]
[User 10557880: Are you going to stream tomorrow?]
[Xixi: Probably will stream for an hour in the evening.]
[User 10557880: Okay.]
Pei Xi thought for a moment and jokingly sent: Then will you come watch me?
[User 10557880: Mm, I’ll come watch you.]
Pei Xi fell silent for a few seconds, his fingertip sliding to the top of the phone screen, where a red spark icon sat next to the other person’s ID.
He still remembered that he and [User 10557880] had met on August 21st. It was just that the other person hadn’t replied to his messages at first. Later, the spark had gone on and off, reigniting a few times. Until today, they had finally made it to a full month.
He had never imagined that the other person would stay with him for this long.
After all, back then, [User 10557880] had just passed by his livestream and dropped a “toll fee.”
He wasn’t [User 10557880]’s favorite streamer.
Who would have thought time would pass so quickly?
They chatted a few words every day, and gradually, a month had gone by.
Pei Xi bit his lower lip, hesitating for a long time. He typed and deleted in the input box, finally mustering up the courage to say something shyly.
[Xixi: Brother, happy one month.]
After that, the other person remained in [Typing…] for a long time. Pei Xi waited and waited until he grew sleepy and fell asleep.
A long time later, his screen suddenly lit up.
[User 10557880: Happy one month.]
