- Chapter 35 - A Joke to be Avoided
The two stood right there on the landing of the staircase.
The floor below was home to various student clubs, with the music club tucked away at the edge. Coincidentally, they had chosen the staircase on this side to descend.
Upstairs was the Student Union.
All the departments were busy, and those who were leaving had already left ahead of them.
So, they didn’t have to worry about being discovered.
Especially with the cover of the music room. Earlier, Xia Meng had disliked the uneven skill levels, as the abilities of a few club members were truly subpar.
But now, the better group of musicians was performing a peaceable, slightly warm melody, as if providing their own background music.
Xia Meng felt she wasn’t quite tall enough.
She was slightly tired from the kiss, even though it was only for a fleeting moment, and her feet already felt sore.
She stared at Tao Yun for a while, watching her reaction, observing every subtle change carefully. First, her eyes widened slightly, her eyelashes fluttering.
Then, she calmed down, with a hint of an unfinished feeling.
Unfinished feeling?
Xia Meng understood! She was about to go for another tiptoe kiss.
But Tao Yun held her shoulders down.
The music club’s practice piece ended. It seemed another group had taken over—the same group Xia Meng had complained about for their poor skill level.
Just as her hopes were about to sink, Tao Yun lowered her head.
I had all sorts of apologies planned out just now. That was the only thought in Xia Meng’s mind.
Tao Yun wanted to reciprocate, wanted to take the initiative, so Xia Meng was happy to continue.
She wouldn’t lose anything; she was thrilled.
Xia Meng closed her eyes, vaguely hearing the System chuckle. Just as Xia Meng thought Tao Yun was about to kiss her, a voice rang out from the top of the stairs.
The two instinctively pulled away from each other, cursing inwardly!
Who is it?! Looking for trouble!
Oh, it’s the Student Union President. Alright, I’ll let you off the hook.
For the sake of your dedication to the school and all the hair you’ve lost.
The Student Union President uttered an “Er,” sensing the strange atmosphere in the stairwell.
He looked with some confusion at the two girls—who were silent, stood close together, and seemed so harmonious, practically a match made in heaven—and asked a sincere question: “What are you two doing here?”
Tao Yun regained her composure: “President, is there something you need downstairs?”
The President scratched his head: “I just came down for a stroll. Just treat it as a patrol.”
Slacking off.
And ruining someone else’s good moment!
Xia Meng’s eyes sharpened, and she mentally ran through various assassination plans, giving the President an ominous premonition. Sweating, he blurted out, though he wasn’t sure why: “Well, I won’t bother you two anymore. Please continue!”
As for what they should continue, he didn’t know.
Instinct!
His directness saved his life.
Xia Meng’s expression softened, and she started complaining to the System.
Am I really so unlucky?
Heh heh.
My happiness has once again moved further away from me.
Heh heh.
Sigh, I know you’re jealous of me…
The System had nothing to say.
It was actually quite happy to see its host happy, but seeing her look so smug made it feel annoyed.
It thought the President had done a great job.
The System couldn’t show its petty thoughts.
You’ve already gotten this far. There will be countless more opportunities.
The System was right, and Xia Meng began to feel triumphant again.
Tao Yun hadn’t rejected her, which meant their relationship was no longer just a pure friendship! She could find opportunities for cuddles and kisses later on. All she had to do was be a little more proactive!
Tao Yun was a goddess.
She was her little fairy, so it was only right for her to take the initiative.
The President saw Xia Meng’s face beaming with a smile. How should he put it? A little foolish.
But the happiness radiating from her made him feel that she was indeed worthy of being voted the school’s mascot.
The President was about to leave.
He was going to check on the music room that was making noise.
But Tao Yun stopped him.
Tao Yun’s mental fortitude was exceptional. While everything was written on Xia Meng’s face, she remained calm and was even able to ask a few questions.
Tao Yun: “President, do you have any recommended vendors?”
The President thought for a moment: “You can buy plasters and alcohol anywhere; the difference isn’t big.”
If it were other important items, it would certainly be more troublesome, requiring confirmation of quality and price. It was precisely because these items were easy to buy that they were assigned to Tao Yun and Xia Meng.
It gave the two a chance to spend time together without burdening them.
The President: “If I had to recommend one, the one across the street from the school is quite good.”
It was close.
But perhaps these two didn’t need it to be so close?
Tao Yun nodded: “I see. Thank you, President.”
After the President left, Xia Meng began to look at Tao Yun with restless, playful eyes.
See? You took the initiative just now. Why not continue?
If you don’t continue, I’ll go for it again!
Tao Yun: “…”
This person is now completely obsessed with kissing.
She turned her head away, masking the flush on her face: “Let’s go. We need to buy the supplies.”
Xia Meng: “…”
Fine.
There will be a tomorrow.
After accepting this, Xia Meng started talking about other things: “I’m mainly participating in the long-distance run. The school track is not convenient for training, so I’ll find a training facility.”
She was hinting at something.
Tao Yun: “I’ll go with you.”
Xia Meng was delighted.
As expected, now that the relationship has made actual progress, things are different! I can be even more brazen!
Xia Meng was bold and fearless: “What if it’s far? It might be inconvenient for you to go home. How about just staying at my place? I can even hire a tutor for you so you won’t fall behind in your Physics Olympiad prep.”
Tao Yun smiled: “Does your house have a spare guest room?”
Xia Meng: Of course, it does, but I have to say no.
What’s wrong with two girls sharing a room?!
Nothing at all!
Tao Yun: “Won’t Auntie Xia mind?”
Xia Meng: “…”
Tao Yun: “And your brother. He’s a bit too protective.”
Xia Meng deeply felt the consequences of her own actions.
She took a deep breath, melancholic: “My family knows about my confession.”
Tao Yun wasn’t surprised. For something so major, how could a teacher not call the parents? It was normal for them to know.
What surprised her was the reaction of Xia Meng’s family; they seemed to accept the matter very easily, even though their daughter liked another girl.
Xia Meng’s family must be very happy.
Xia Meng: “But I haven’t introduced you to my grandparents, so they misunderstood.”
Her brother misunderstood her as being fickle.
Her mother… she couldn’t quite figure out her mother’s thoughts.
Xia Meng: “But I’ll explain properly!”
They were going to be together sooner or later, so how could they keep it a secret? Xia Meng had already prepared herself mentally.
She had a strong drive. When she decided on something, she didn’t procrastinate; she got it done immediately.
Tao Yun, however, said: “No rush.”
Xia Meng: “Okay.”
If Tao Yun said no rush, then no rush. Anyway, no one could stop her from liking Tao Yun.
They didn’t go to the place across from the school but walked a bit further.
Xia Meng looked at the surrounding buildings and felt like she had been there before. After walking a long way, she suddenly remembered that Lin Ruoruo had taken her here.
Tao Yun used to work at a convenience store not far from here.
So, Xia Meng carefully made a mental note of this place.
Coming here twice, her state of mind was vastly different.
Tao Yun explained: “There’s a pharmacy here. I often go there to buy medicine, and the owner gives me a discount.”
Xia Meng: “The owner is truly a great Samaritan.”
The great Samaritan saw Tao Yun and greeted her warmly.
“Long time no see! Have you been busy with school lately?”
The pharmacy was a bit small, unlike the large drugstores located in prominent areas, but it was cost-effective.
Xia Meng saw some plainly dressed patients waiting there. Besides the owner, there was one other person; Xia Meng wasn’t sure if they were an employee or a family member.
Tao Yun: “The school is having a sports meet, so I’m here to buy some medical supplies.”
The pharmacy owner was stunned for a moment, then reacted: “Do you need a large quantity?”
Generally, one would assume the school’s needs would be extensive.
In reality, not everyone in the school would get injured; the chance of an incident was small. They were just stocking up, just in case.
So, when Xia Meng took out a hongbao (red envelope) and pulled money out of it, the owner was silent for a moment: “Does your school require students to pay for supplies with a hongbao?”
The hongbao had a large character for “Longevity” printed on it.
By no means did Xia Meng look like she was of an age to receive such a hongbao!
But Xia Meng wanted to liven up the atmosphere: “Yes, exactly.”
Her original intention was just to play along with the pharmacy owner’s joke to create a topic of conversation, but the effect was less than ideal.
The owner was silent again for a while: “…”
Xia Meng: “…”
I really need to change this habit of speaking without thinking!
Fortunately, the owner quickly salvaged the situation: “Perhaps you have a high seniority. Could you be… Tao Yun’s distant little aunt or something?”
Xia Meng: “…”
This rescue was worse than being left in the predicament! Just let me die right here!
Xia Meng let out a dry laugh twice.
Tao Yun: “Little Aunt, why are you standing there stunned?”
The address made Xia Meng’s spine tingle, and she completely softened. She turned to look at Tao Yun, who was smiling, her tone incredibly serious.
So serious that the owner was fooled: “Are you really her Little Aunt?”
“Little Aunt” Xia Meng handed the list to the owner, then paid.
Because they didn’t need much, they just carried the items and left.
Outside the pharmacy, Xia Meng was still in shock.
Tao Yun was still playing along: “Let’s go, Little Aunt.”
Go, Little Aunt will go with you.
System.
I really want to privately issue you a mission right now.
Xia Meng asked in the interim.
What mission?
Stand on the street and shout three times, ‘I am everyone’s Little Aunt.’
Xia Meng held the bag, absolutely refusing to let Tao Yun help carry it. She saw Tao Yun go to buy water, and then—
Go ahead and issue it! I dare you to do it
What is ‘face’? Xia Meng lost hers long ago!
The System started worrying about its host’s thick skin.
It only dared to think about that mission; issuing it privately would result in punishment.
So, it could only watch as Tao Yun stood at the counter and loudly asked Xia Meng: “Little Aunt, what would you like to drink?”
Tsk, playing along with the joke now?
Xia Meng felt the title was both embarrassing and sweet, and she truly was shameless now: “Anything is fine!”
Little Aunt isn’t picky.
Tao Yun bought herself a bottle of lemon water and a bottle of lemon black tea for Xia Meng.
Xia Meng hugged the black tea: “I thought you’d go to the convenience store where you used to work to buy it.”
Tao Yun frowned: “Why walk extra for just a few dollars?”
Xia Meng thought that made perfect sense.
Her guess was that Tao Yun’s uncle thought the same way. Even though his own store was just a few steps further, he insisted on buying cigarettes at the store where Tao Yun had just bought water. As he came out, cigarette dangling from his mouth, he saw his niece standing with another girl.
The unfamiliar girl was carrying a large bag of things and looked at the cigarette in his hand with a hint of disgust before looking away.
The uncle, feeling disliked, walked over: “Aren’t you supposed to be busy with some competition? Why do you have time to go shopping?”
Tao Yun: “…”
Xia Meng: “…”
Xia Meng quickly wiped the expression from her face and started brainstorming.
Who is this person? Does he know Tao Yun? Was my expression too obvious just now? But I really hate people smoking in public! Did I offend him? Will I cause trouble for Tao Yun?
Xia Meng nervously hid behind Tao Yun, trembling slightly.
Embarrassing. Just pretend nothing happened.
Tao Yun, on the other hand, was thinking:
How did I run into Uncle here?
Tsk, annoying.
To be honest, she had no ill will towards her uncle; as a relative, he was decent.
But Tao Yun still remembered what her uncle had said not long ago: “How can one girl confess to another girl…”
Uncle won’t be supportive.
Tao Yun’s grip tightened on the plastic bottle, and she pursed her lips: “I’m not shopping. I’m helping the school buy some things.”
Her uncle’s gaze shifted to Xia Meng’s hands.
Xia Meng flinched, but he still saw the words printed on the bag. Tao Yun often bought medicine for her mother, so they were familiar with this store.
Helping the school buy medicine?
The uncle was baffled: “Doesn’t your school have a school clinic? Why would they send two students out to buy medicine?”
Tao Yun: “For exercise.”
Xia Meng listened to their conversation from behind Tao Yun, trying to guess their relationship.
The man’s tone sounded like an elder, so was he a relative? Oh God! I actually showed that kind of expression to Tao Yun’s relative just now! I’m going to die!
Xia Meng’s palms were sweating, and she stammered, attempting to salvage her image: “Hello.”
As soon as she peeked out, she smelled the smoke and quickly retreated again.
Tao Yun: “Uncle, please put out your cigarette.”
The uncle took a final, deep drag from the cigarette holder, then put out the cigarette, but the smell of smoke on him wouldn’t dissipate immediately. He thought to himself, Girls these days are so bothersome.
But since she was his niece’s friend, the uncle had to tolerate it.
Before the uncle could greet Xia Meng, the pharmacy owner rushed out: “Hey, Tao Yun! Your Little Aunt left something at the store!”
Tao Yun: “…”
Xia Meng lowered her head, looking for a hole to crawl into, but unfortunately only found a few cracks in the ground, and she wasn’t sure if she could squeeze in.
The uncle was puzzled: “You have a Little Aunt?”
Why didn’t I know about this!
