- Confessing To The School Queen In Front Of The Whole School
- Chapter 14 - Time to Show Off
Tao Yun returned home.
The main house echoed with the sound of an elderly person coughing. The door was ajar, and a small light was on inside. Tao Yun navigated the living room by this faint light, moving very slowly because the room was filled with numerous obstructions. One careless step and she would trip.
None of the things scattered about were useful, but they belonged to the old man of the main house.
Tao Yun returned to her room with a cold expression. The moment she entered, someone knocked on the door.
Her mother asked from outside, “Xiao Yun, have you eaten dinner?”
Her mother wouldn’t usually ask this kind of question; she likely knew Tao Yun hadn’t gone to her part-time job.
Tao Yun opened the door to see her mother’s constrained face.
Unlike Xia Meng’s slightly innocent and helpless look of bewilderment, this woman was genuinely weak-willed, so much so that she habitually carried an air of apology even when facing her own daughter, afraid of angering Tao Yun.
This manner of interaction made Tao Yun feel a little weary.
The woman hadn’t done anything wrong, Tao Yun thought silently.
She offered a pale smile: “Your uncle said you’re participating in the physics competition.”
Tao Yun nodded: “I meant to tell you, but you’ve been busy these past few days.”
Her mother was already physically frail, yet she kept refusing to see a doctor, insisting on working overtime doing handicrafts just to earn money.
Tao Yun had always found this lifestyle exhausting.
She told the slightly pitiful woman, “There’s prize money for winning the physics competition.”
Her mother looked at her daughter blankly.
“Are you confident you can get first place?”
“Yes!” Tao Yun answered decisively.
She had to get first place; she didn’t have the luxury of failing.
The woman didn’t say anything more. She felt her daughter was much more dependable than she was.
She nodded: “If you have a plan, then that’s fine.”
She paused, subtly glancing toward the main house, and lowered her voice: “It’s not convenient for you to study here. I’ve saved up a little money recently. Why don’t we move out?”
Tao Yun gave a short laugh, the amusement not reaching her eyes: “What kind of decent apartment could we rent if we moved out? Save that money.”
Even if this place felt less like a home and more like they were living at someone else’s mercy, Tao Yun had no intention of leaving before she came of age.
Why move out? Living here meant no rent, only paying for water and electricity.
How much could a stinky old man use?
Tao Yun looked at her mother: “We don’t have much savings; don’t waste it. And don’t stop taking your medicine. We’ll move out together someday.”
Her mother smiled slowly: “I believe you.”
Xia Meng walked into Class Eight’s classroom, head held high and chest out.
She was strutting proudly, looking just like a proud little cockerel.
Su Hui was originally boasting to his buddies about his victories from last night, claiming he had slaughtered the competition every round, easily achieved godlike scores, and if they needed him to carry them, they just had to call him “Dad.”
He was getting more and more excited, on the verge of pulling out his phone to demonstrate his skill right then and there.
Fortunately, Xia Meng’s timely entrance saved him.
Even in Class Eight, teachers would confiscate phones. Being so brazen was not advisable.
Su Hui put his phone away: “Bro, I was looking for you all night! Why didn’t you reply?”
“Huh?” Xia Meng was confused.
Did he look for me?
System.
Check your phone.
Xia Meng didn’t have anyone added on WeChat, and no one had even added her to the class group chat. Although she liked playing games, they were all single-player.
Who would look for her?
If anyone, it would be Tao Yun, but she had been with Tao Yun all last night.
Sweet tutoring, eh heh~
Xia Meng still pulled out her phone and only then realized she had received many text messages. After reading for a long time, she asked: “Why were you looking for me?”
Su Hui’s texts were as pointless as he was, constantly asking Are you there?, Reply to me, and It’s important.
He never actually specified what the matter was.
Su Hui was momentarily speechless.
In this day and age, was there really someone who didn’t look at their phone and only checked text messages after being reminded the next day?
He had thought he had somehow offended Xia Meng, wondering if the post incident had been exposed. But it turned out she was still using 2G-level communication habits.
Su Hui: “To play a game! You’re not in the class group, and it took me forever to find your number, but you never replied!”
He began to accuse Xia Meng of being heartless and disloyal.
We’re all bros; what kind of bro doesn’t come when invited to play a game!
Xia Meng coughed lightly: “Add me to the class group then.”
Su Hui added Xia Meng as a friend and pulled her into the class group chat.
A term and a half into the school year, Xia Meng finally entered the class group. As soon as she joined, the members showered her with congratulatory messages.
Even people not physically in the classroom expressed their welcome via WeChat.
Su Hui felt refreshed: “I’m dragging you into a game tonight, so don’t even think about running away!”
Su Hui: “Don’t worry, I won’t mind if you’re bad!”
Xia Meng reminded him: “Do you still remember the class average score, right?”
Who was the silly class leader who felt sorry for Old Yang and said he wanted to raise Class Eight’s average score?
Well, great. After school, he leads the charge to play games, contradicting his own words and trying to drag Xia Meng along, attempting to disrupt her tutoring schedule.
Su Hui: “…”
The fact that he had only mentioned it to Xia Meng showed that he hadn’t held out much hope to begin with.
The other students in the class listened for a while, looking bewildered: “What is the average score?”
“I don’t know, settlement evaluation?”
“Then I must get MVP!”
See, this was why Su Hui didn’t count on anyone else.
He sighed dramatically. In this class, Xia Meng still had a chance, but everyone else was utterly hopeless.
Xia Meng, who was essentially a couch potato, didn’t want to bear such huge expectations.
She couldn’t save all of Class Eight by herself.
Xia Meng: No, I can’t be the only one working hard!
Although her reasons and motivation for tutoring were entirely because of Tao Yun and had nothing to do with Class Eight, she still said with deep distress: “I treat Class Eight as a collective! I thought everyone would work hard together! I never expected Class Eight to actually be a disorganized mess!”
Someone couldn’t take it anymore: “What is the matter?! Who says we’re not a collective!”
“Is someone looking down on us?”
“Tsk, it must be those guys from Class One.”
“Quiet down, Xia Meng’s crush is in Class One…”
Xia Meng’s face flushed. She cleared her throat twice: “It’s Old Yang!”
They were even more confused.
“Old Yang said we’re not a collective?”
Seeing the topic drift further and further, and realizing that these people’s understanding was so unique, Su Hui stepped forward: “I heard someone mocking Old Yang for not being able to teach anyone well and having the lowest average score. I was upset, so I complained to Xia Meng a few times.”
As for the ‘Son-in-law Plan’ he proposed…
Su Hui had a flash of inspiration and did not mention it.
In fact, Class Eight truly was a collective.
These passionate teenagers had been doing their own things, but when they heard their class leader’s words, they exploded.
Not only Su Hui felt sorry for Old Yang; everyone in Class Eight considered Old Yang one of their own. How could they tolerate him being looked down upon!
Damn it, it’s just the average score!
The average score…
The rush of passion was doused with cold water: “The exam is the day after tomorrow, isn’t it?”
“It’s too late.”
Someone raised a hand: “Xia Meng, when will you be able to win over Tao Yun? Get her to join Class Eight!”
Xia Meng: “…”
She now really didn’t want to admit she was a student of Class Eight.
How had they managed to achieve such ideological alignment with Su Hui?
Xia Meng: “Shouldn’t we rely on ourselves?”
Su Hui had an epiphany: “So, last night…”
Xia Meng: “That’s right, I was studying all last night!”
The Class Eight students were moved. They hadn’t expected Xia Meng to go to such lengths.
She had always been quiet and unassuming, yet she cared about Class Eight after all. What reason did they have to give up? At worst, they’d go home and beg their parents to hire tutors as well!
Su Hui was especially touched. As the class leader, he had seen another side of Class Eight.
Active and flourishing.
Su Hui: “It’s too late for us to hire tutors now. How about we trouble your tutor? Don’t worry, we’ll definitely pay!”
Xia Meng blinked: “I can’t do that.”
“My tutor is Tao Yun. She can’t teach so many people.”
Su Hui: “…”
Listen to that tone! Didn’t it sound just like a daughter who had married out, only thinking about her new family and not at all about her original one?
“Tao Yun? Wouldn’t that be even better?”
An excited voice rang out, but Su Hui stopped them: “Professional tutors are definitely better! I’m going to contact someone to help find one right now! We’ll definitely find one before school is dismissed!”
How could they trouble Tao Yun to teach them?
Let Xia Meng enjoy that privilege all by herself!
Su Hui was working himself ragged. He was satisfied: “Your progress is alright; I’m very relieved.”
Xia Meng: “…”
Relieved about what?
They hadn’t even started tutoring, and she had already been diligently working for two days.
Thinking about this, Xia Meng felt incredibly confident, believing she could definitely score well on this exam. After all, her tutor was Tao Yun!
Xia Meng was bubbling with the desire to show off.
She wanted to go find Tao Yun and demonstrate her learning progress.
