- Chapter 78 - Lu Jingze, Don’t Hurt Them!
The Lu Family Courtyard, Kyoto
A man dressed in black casual wear entered the courtyard after receiving permission. In the garden, the plum blossoms had long since fallen, replaced by lush green foliage.
“Commander Lu, Ji Yuheng hired people to kidnap Wang Xinghe in Qingcheng. He’s setting a trap to force the Young Master into committing a crime. Should we intervene?”
Old Master Lu was idling with two Imperial Green jade beads in his palm. Upon hearing the report, a flash of disgust crossed his eyes. “That Ji boy is still as unrefined as ever. His methods are filthy.”
“We won’t intervene,” he continued. “This incident will serve as a test for the two of them. At the very least, it will make Jingze understand that with his background, he can never live a mundane life unless he’s dead.”
“Let him realize that falling from the heights and possessing no power means he can’t protect the person he loves.”
The man in black nodded efficiently. “Understood.”
“Did that boy Lu Ting get involved?” the Old Master asked abruptly. Lu Ting was an accidental illegitimate son—the result of a one-night stand after a college student was dragged into a booth at a party years ago. The mother had taken a billion yuan and settled abroad, never to be seen again.
“He’s vacationing in Iceland. He withdrew from Ji Yuheng’s project and claimed he was there for medical recuperation,” the man reported.
“He’s as clever as ever, always protecting himself. But that excessive caution makes him unfit for the seat of the Lu family,” the Old Master remarked, the jade beads still spinning in his hand. “Fine, have someone keep an eye on things. We can’t let Jingze actually end up with a criminal record. In this age of media, that would be too difficult to clean up.”
The Old Master had softened. After all, Lu Jingze was the one he had raised personally—the most suitable person to take the helm. He would give the boy a chance to see reality, but he wouldn’t let him be destroyed.
The Abandoned Building, Qingcheng
When Lu Jingze found the abandoned site via GPS, he grabbed an iron bar from the side of the road. He dragged the metal rod along the ground and kicked open the doors.
Four men in black were surrounding a bloodied Wang Xinghe, taking photos with their phones. Lu Jingze’s eyes turned crimson instantly. Gripping the iron bar, he swung at the first man with everything he had.
Two of the men were quickly downed by the bar, but the other two were trained fighters. They managed to wrest the iron bar away, forcing Lu Jingze into a brutal hand-to-hand struggle.
Pain wracked Xinghe’s body, but he gathered his strength to shout: “Lu Jingze, don’t hurt them! They’re recording on purpose! They want you to commit a crime!”
One of the men Lu Jingze had knocked down crawled back up and slapped Xinghe hard. “Shut up!”
Xinghe spat out a mouthful of blood and lunged forward, slamming his forehead into the man’s face. Both recoiled in pain.
Lu Jingze was locked in a grapple with a muscular, middle-aged man. They tumbled across the dusty floor, landing right in front of a short knife. Lu Jingze grabbed the blade.
The four kidnappers coordinated perfectly. Three blocked Lu Jingze while the fourth continued to beat Xinghe. Xinghe didn’t make a sound, enduring the blows because he didn’t want Lu Jingze to lose control.
Lu Jingze’s eyes were bloodshot. Knowing Xinghe was suffering for his sake, he didn’t use the knife. Instead, he snatched back the iron bar and fought like a man possessed, his own body becoming covered in bruises and cuts.
After a chaotic struggle, the wail of police sirens finally echoed outside.
“Damn it! Who called the cops?!” the leader snarled.
Behind him, a smartwatch had fallen from Xinghe’s bound wrists. He had spent the entire time loosening the ropes until he could finally dial emergency services. The police had been incredibly efficient, tracking his location immediately.
Seeing the officers storm in, Xinghe finally let go, his tension snapping as he fell into a dead faint.
The Hospital
Lu Jingze sat in a heavy silence outside the ward. When He Zheng arrived, he saw Lu Jingze covered in blood; even the nurses were at a loss on how to treat him because he refused to move.
“President Lu.” He Zheng felt a surge of excitement. This level of chaos meant Lu Jingze’s “ordinary life” was officially over. Yet, he also felt a pang of sympathy; both Lu and Wang were severely injured.
“He Zheng, show no mercy to anyone involved in this plan. It’s time to close the net.” Lu Jingze’s eyes were eerily calm.
He Zheng’s blood began to boil with anticipation.
“Submit the evidence we collected on Ji Yuheng’s illegal smuggling of rare earth minerals. Have the authorities prosecute him. Send him away for good.” Lu Jingze had always held leverage over these people. He had only held back because of his mother.
But looking at Xinghe lying in that hospital bed, Lu Jingze was more lucid than ever. He finally accepted a hard truth: his mother didn’t love him. She never had, and she never would. He had spared the Ji family for her sake, but she had never shown him an ounce of affection in return.
It was time to give up. This burdensome “familial love” had to be cut off completely.
“Yes, President Lu. The files will be delivered to the top immediately.”
“Get my private residence in Kyoto ready. I’m going to convince Xinghe to return to Kyoto with me.” Lu Jingze had reached a total epiphany. He had been naive to think he could have peace by simply stepping down. As long as he carried the Lu bloodline, he would never be left alone. Without power, he couldn’t even protect the person he loved.
Wang Xinghe eventually woke up, his eyes searching frantically for Lu Jingze. Seeing him sitting by the bed, he breathed a sigh of relief and struggled to sit up.
Lu Jingze snapped out of his trance and hurried to support him. “Brother, I’m sorry… I’m the one who dragged you into this.”
Xinghe shook his head, ignoring his own pain. He reached out to touch Lu Jingze’s face, which was still covered in dried blood. “Why haven’t you treated your wounds yet?”
“It doesn’t hurt…” Lu Jingze choked out. Looking at Xinghe’s swollen, bruised face, he felt a suffocating pang of heartache. He had been too naive, underestimating just how low Ji Yuheng and his ilk would sink.
