Can't Possibly Fall for My Wife Again After Rebirth, Right? - Chapter 66
The next morning, Xu Yingran climbed out of bed feeling vigorous and full of spirit.
She looked at the still-sleeping Fu Qiao and noticed that the corners of her eyes were still red and her lips were slightly swollen, making her look as though she had just finished a long cry.
In truth, Fu Qiao had cried quite a bit the night before.
Xu Yingran knew every sensitive spot on Fu Qiao’s body. She had nibbled on Fu Qiao’s ear while her hands explored, leaving Fu Qiao with no choice but to clutch Xu Yingran’s clothes, sobbing and whimpering. A young girl unversed in such matters always has a strong reaction; Fu Qiao hadn’t dared to cry too loudly, only pleading with Xu Yingran to go “slower.”
But no matter how slow Xu Yingran went, Fu Qiao still reached a trembling climax. Tears had leaked uncontrollably from her eyes, and after her body went rigid, she turned as soft as clay. Before Xu Yingran could even react, Fu Qiao had fallen asleep with tears still on her face.
Though it wasn’t exactly how Xu Yingran had envisioned their first intimate encounter, she had still tasted plenty of sweetness. She decided not to go all the way to the end just yet, giving Fu Qiao time to adjust.
While washing up, Xu Yingran couldn’t help but recall the physical sensations of the night before. Fu Qiao’s skin was so soft, and despite how modestly she usually dressed, her figure was surprisingly curvaceous. As she brushed her teeth, Xu Yingran hummed a little tune, thinking to herself that Fu Qiao was definitely a “hidden gem” in terms of beauty.
“What are you doing?” Zhao Yu asked, coming out of her room. Seeing her daughter looking so incredibly smug, she remarked, “Is sleeping in the same bed as Fu Qiao really that exciting?”
“Mm-hmm! Very exciting!”
Though mother and daughter were talking about two completely different things, the conclusion was the same. Xu Yingran was so happy she nearly chewed the bristles off her toothbrush.
By the time Xu Yingran finished washing up, Hu Mei and the others were awake. They planned to head downstairs with Zhao Yu to buy breakfast, leaving Xu Yingran at the house.
Returning to the bedroom, Xu Yingran pushed open the door to find Fu Qiao awake. She was sitting dazed in the covers, looking lost in thought. Hearing the movement, she turned around and her eyes locked onto Xu Yingran.
Fu Qiao dazed: “…” Fu Qiao realizing: “!!!” Fu Qiao shouting: “Get out!”
With that, she hurled the pillow Xu Yingran had used the night before and dove back under the duvet. What on earth did I do with Xu Yingran last night?!
Memories flooded back: the kissing, the unusual sensations, and then…
She felt her body was still tingling, and certain unmentionable places felt a bit sore. The thought of herself crying like that in Xu Yingran’s arms made her feel like she could never show her face again!
Seeing Fu Qiao bundled into a ball, Xu Yingran found it adorable. She leaned over with a beaming smile and lifted a corner of the quilt. Seeing Fu Qiao hugging her knees, she said, “What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly telling me to get out?”
Fu Qiao wished she could find a crack in the floor to crawl into!
“Alright, alright.” Xu Yingran knew Fu Qiao was thin-skinned. She peeled back the covers and wrapped her arms around her. “Don’t be shy about last night. I wanted to be close to you. Besides, I’m not the type to hit and run—I’ll take responsibility for you.”
Xu Yingran looked her in the eye. “I like you. Will you be my girlfriend?”
“No!” Fu Qiao’s face turned red with anger. She snapped, “I didn’t agree to anything. Don’t you dare try to take advantage of the situation!”
“Is that really how you use the phrase ‘take advantage’?”
“I don’t care!”
Although Fu Qiao had felt… things during Xu Yingran’s touch, she still didn’t want to start dating yet. Back when she had delivered the love letter for Zhou Wan, she had heard things very clearly. Even though she was falling for Xu Yingran step by step, she still couldn’t fully believe that Xu Yingran truly liked her.
“Last night… don’t you dare tell anyone about last night,” Fu Qiao said, staring intently at her. “If you do, I’ll deny everything.”
“Huh?” Xu Yingran frowned and leaned in. “You want to use me and then dump me without taking credit?”
Fu Qiao was stunned.
Xu Yingran continued with an air of mock grievance: “I worked so hard last night; how can you wake up and not recognize it? I’m an innocent girl too, and it was my first time doing something like that. You can’t just refuse to take responsibility!”
Fu Qiao was fuming. She felt that Xu Yingran was simply twisting words to suit her own ends!
The two had a minor spat first thing in the morning—or rather, Fu Qiao scolded her while Xu Yingran sat on the edge of the bed looking wronged. With her crumpled expression, anyone looking in would have thought Xu Yingran was the one who had been trifled with.
When Fu Qiao left later, Xu Yingran tried to chase after her to see her off, but she was promptly kicked back.
Zhao Yu, seeing her daughter return looking dejected, laughed. “What’s wrong with that face? Weren’t you quite happy this morning?”
Xu Yingran sighed and sat in a chair without a word. Zhao Yu shook her head; as a parent, she didn’t want to pry too much into the children’s affairs. She went back to chatting with Hu Mei until Xu Chunjian sobered up and the family of three finally departed.
As expected, the chance to have lunch with Fu Qiao on Saturday was gone. Xu Yingran would have to wait until next week.
At Yao Jin’s House
Yao Jin looked at the person beside her and couldn’t help but frown.
“Xu Yingran,” Yao Jin said with annoyance. “You’ve been staring at that test paper and grinning for ten minutes. What exactly are you smiling at? It’s creeping me out.”
She had seen people laugh at TV shows or novels, but never at a practice exam. She seriously suspected Xu Yingran had caught her head in a door on the way over.
Xu Yingran continued to grin foolishly. Propping her head on her hand, she said, “You wouldn’t understand. I’m not laughing at the paper; I’m laughing because I thought of something else.”
“Something else?” Yao Jin took a sip of her juice. “What, did Fu Qiao finally agree to be your girlfriend?”
At the mention of this, the “little sun” that was Xu Yingran immediately deflated. She said gloomily, “No.”
Yao Jin gave a dismissive “Tch.”
“How long has it been? Fu Qiao transferred over a month ago and you still haven’t caught her. What are you so happy about? Hurry up and finish your homework. My tutor is coming soon,” Yao Jin said. “This tutor is very expensive. If you want to audit the session, I’m charging you extra.”
Because Fu Qiao refused to see her on Saturday, Xu Yingran had brought her test papers and study plan to Yao Jin’s house instead.
The Yao family lived in a massive villa in the city’s high-end district. Entering the complex had taken some effort; Yao Jin had to personally come out to get her. Inside, Xu Yingran saw a two-story villa and a lawn nearly the size of a school basketball court. Half the lawn was landscaped, and the other half featured a swimming pool (currently covered for winter).
Yao Jin’s room was also enormous, with separate areas for sleep and study, plus a private bathroom and a walk-in closet. Xu Yingran couldn’t fathom why a high school senior needed a walk-in closet until she opened it and saw rows upon rows of different school uniforms.
According to Yao Jin, her previous international school issued four or five sets of uniforms a year. Her closet held every uniform she’d owned since childhood—British-style vests and skirts, suit-style uniforms, gym clothes, white shirts, ties, and leather shoes. It was worlds apart from Xu Yingran, who wore the same blue-and-white tracksuit for three years.
Rich people, Xu Yingran thought, shaking her head.
The housekeeper brought up a plate of freshly cut fruit. Yao Jin, tired of writing, called Xu Yingran over to eat.
“My birthday is next Saturday.” Yao Jin popped a grape into her mouth. “Do you and Fu Qiao want to come over?”
“Birthday?” Xu Yingran looked up. “Aren’t you already 18?”
“My ID says 18, but my family follows the lunar calendar. Plus, my dad was busy on a business trip, so we postponed it,” Yao Jin said flatly. “Anyway, the party is next Saturday. Are you coming? Bring Fu Qiao.”
“Next Saturday?” Xu Yingran pondered. “Fu Qiao has classes all day Saturday. She only has time in the evening. Is the party at night? At your house or somewhere else?”
“My dad wants to hold it at home,” Yao Jin said helplessly. “He invited a lot of business associates, so it’ll probably turn into a commercial networking event. I figured if you and Fu Qiao came, I’d have someone to talk to.”
Seeing Yao Jin’s reluctant expression, Xu Yingran said, “I’ll ask Fu Qiao when I call her tonight. Coming in the evening shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Great,” Yao Jin said with a smile. “If it gets too late, just stay over. My house has plenty of spare rooms.”
Hearing this, Xu Yingran thought back to her night in bed with Fu Qiao and smiled even wider. “I think that sounds perfect.”
The Nightly Call
At 10:50 PM sharp, Xu Yingran dialed Fu Qiao’s number.
Fu Qiao still seemed to be angry; she hadn’t picked up the night before. Just as Xu Yingran thought she wouldn’t answer again, the call connected.
“Fu Qiao?” Xu Yingran immediately beamed. “You aren’t mad at me anymore?”
Fu Qiao stayed silent. She couldn’t very well admit she had meant to hit “decline” but accidentally pressed “answer.” That would make her look stupid.
“What is it?” Fu Qiao snapped. “Who said I’m not mad? I’m still furious. If you don’t have anything important, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, wait! Don’t hang up!” Xu Yingran hurriedly cradled the phone. “I went to Yao Jin’s house today. She said she’s having a birthday party next Saturday evening and wants us to come. She asked me to let you know.”
A birthday party?
Fu Qiao blinked. She and Yao Jin were on good terms, and since they had spent so much time together recently, it was only right to attend if invited. However, she wasn’t sure if Xu Yingran was telling the truth.
“You aren’t lying to me, are you?” Fu Qiao said suspiciously. “Are you just using Yao Jin’s birthday as an excuse to trick me into going out with you on Saturday?”
“Of course not,” Xu Yingran explained quickly. “Yao Jin told me today. If you don’t believe me, you can call her yourself.”
Fu Qiao nodded. “Fine.”
The next second, the call was disconnected. Xu Yingran stared at the screen for two seconds before realizing Fu Qiao was actually calling Yao Jin to verify. She let out a long sigh. Is my credit rating really that low? Does my wife have to be this guarded against me?
About three minutes later, Xu Yingran was getting anxious. She wanted to call back but feared annoying Fu Qiao. She sat huddled in her blankets, hoping Fu Qiao would remember to call her back.
Finally, the phone rang. Xu Yingran answered happily.
“Hello, Fu Qiao~”
“I asked Yao Jin. She is indeed having a birthday party next Saturday,” Fu Qiao said coolly. “I’ll go over myself after Professor Chen’s class is finished. You don’t need to come pick me up.”
“Huh? No, picking you up is on my way… Hello? Wife?”
Xu Yingran looked at the disconnected call again and massaged her temples. She had thought that after becoming intimate, their relationship would soften. But why did it feel like they were getting further apart?
Which step had gone wrong?
Xu: My wife is angry every day, the kind that a kiss won’t even fix!
