Can't Possibly Fall for My Wife Again After Rebirth, Right? - Chapter 54
Xu Yingran was the first one to arrive at the classroom. She waited while eating her breakfast, and it was over twenty minutes before the first classmate showed up. After that, many arrived one after another; everyone was very surprised that Xu Yingran could come to school so early.
When Yao Jin entered the classroom, Xu Yingran looked up at her.
The two had parted ways last night. Xu Yingran had run fast, so she didn’t know what happened to Yao Jin. Now, looking up, she saw that Yao Jin’s face was bruised, which immediately frightened Xu Yingran!
How could those security guards hit someone! And why hit her in the face!
Xu Yingran immediately jumped up from her chair, grabbed Yao Jin, and shouted, “How did you end up like this? We should call the police!”
Yao Jin was startled by her. Once she heard Xu Yingran clearly, she rolled her eyes and said, “Call the police for what? You haven’t woken up yet this morning, have you?”
“The injury on your face!” Xu Yingran was filled with guilt. “Did the security guard hit you? Let’s go talk to the principal!”
“Alright, alright, stop shouting. It’s not what you think.” Yao Jin felt embarrassed and quickly pulled Xu Yingran out into the hallway. “This injury wasn’t from a security guard; my dad hit me.”
Actually, this is what happened: At the time, the two guards saw that the one climbing the wall was hard to catch, so they went after Yao Jin, who was running toward the school building. Yao Jin was no athlete. Once the security guard shouted, seven or eight people surrounded her and took her straight to the security room. Later, Li Yuwen came to pick her up and called her parents.
In the third year of high school, skipping evening self-study and climbing over walls to escape. After Yao Jin’s father arrived and heard the details, he was so furious that he slapped her. So, the mark on her face was from last night.
Hearing this, Xu Yingran felt even more guilty. She said miserably, “A-Jin, it’s all my fault. If it weren’t for me, your dad wouldn’t have hit you.”
Yao Jin didn’t mind much. She had been used to a very disciplined life, and doing something rebellious occasionally made her feel like her 18th year hadn’t been spent in vain.
“It’s nothing; it just hurt for that one slap.” Yao Jin comforted Xu Yingran instead. “If I hadn’t climbed the wall with you, my high school life wouldn’t have been so complete.”
Xu Yingran said gloomily, “But your dad hit you too hard. How could he hit your face?”
Yao Jin replied, “I don’t blame him. Since transferring, my grades have dropped a lot. I haven’t been studying seriously with my tutors, and now I’m skipping class and climbing walls. If I were him, I’d hit me too.”
It was just anger at her lack of ambition; Yao Jin understood. Furthermore, her father was already under enough pressure—managing a company while going through a divorce lawsuit with her mother. He had even moved her from the international high school just to prevent her mother from harassing her. She understood her father’s stress and felt she was indeed being quite immature.
Once Yao Jin made peace with it, the slap didn’t feel as painful. She asked Xu Yingran instead, “What about you? Did you see Fu Qiao?”
“I did,” Xu Yingran said dejectedly. “Not only did I see her, I even stayed over at her house.”
“Oh? Good progress.”
“What good progress…” Xu Yingran sighed, leaning her arms on the railing. “I said I liked her, but Fu Qiao simply didn’t believe me. In the end, nothing was accomplished, and I was kicked back.”
Yao Jin comforted her, “Chasing a wife isn’t that easy. Don’t be in such a rush; there’s still a lot of time.”
“That may be true, but I’m worried that while I’m not by Fu Qiao’s side, someone will beat me to it.”
“…Then you’re worrying too much.” Yao Jin gave a dry laugh. “The students at the provincial key school are all bookworms. No one is eyeing your wife; rest easy.”
Xu Yingran sighed, feeling she could only leave things as they were for now. Although she wanted Fu Qiao to transfer back, it was clear that school was better for her; Xu Yingran couldn’t be so selfish as to ignore Fu Qiao’s feelings.
Fortunately, she still had weekends. This was thanks to the Education Bureau’s reorganization; if it had been earlier or later, she wouldn’t have any time at all, let alone time to chase her wife.
“Since you can’t win Fu Qiao back immediately, why don’t you focus on studying first?” Yao Jin patted Xu Yingran’s shoulder and gave her a deep look. “I can’t hide what happened yesterday for you. Go turn yourself in at Teacher Li’s office in a bit.”
Xu Yingran: “…”
The first stumbling block in chasing her wife had appeared!
Xu Yingran’s week didn’t go very well. First, she was scolded by Li Yuwen. Upon learning that Xu Yingran had climbed the wall to see the suddenly-transferred Fu Qiao, the kind-hearted teacher didn’t call her parents. However, Xu Yingran’s parents scolded her nonetheless; slipping away from school without a word caused the family a lot of worry.
So, for the next few days, even if Xu Yingran wanted to, she didn’t have the ability to go find Fu Qiao. However, Xu Yingran still had an idea. After all, there was a time difference between the dismissal times of her current high school and the provincial key school.
If Xu Yingran ran out of the school gates as soon as they dismissed at 9:30 and caught the fastest bus, she could reach the bus stop at the provincial key school’s gate by around 10:10. If Fu Qiao took a little longer to come out, she could run into her.
They wouldn’t do anything else, just sit at the bus stop and chat. When the last bus came at 10:30, Xu Yingran would leave, reaching home by 11:30. This would sacrifice her already limited sleep, but Xu Yingran calculated her pocket money and decided to try this for a week. Since she had angered her wife away, spending more time to chase her was only right.
Saturday was the day for Fu Qiao’s broadcasting training class. Although Fu Qiao had only decided to pursue the arts exam after several months into her third year, her talent was there. Coupled with being smart enough to not need the teacher to repeat basic pronunciation points, she had made great progress after these few lessons.
Generally, those who chose the arts exam were students with poor grades looking for an alternative route to university. But Fu Qiao was different; she was smart, talented, and flexible. She learned without any pressure. The teacher spent the whole class praising her and even urged the other students to learn from Fu Qiao before dismissal.
When most people had left, Zhou Wan quietly nudged over, looking at Fu Qiao. “Senior Fu Qiao, I haven’t seen you at school these past two days. Did you transfer?”
Seeing her, Fu Qiao remembered the time Zhou Wan asked her to deliver a love letter, which eventually led to her hearing Xu Yingran’s inner thoughts. Her eyes darkened slightly. “Yes, I’ve transferred.”
Zhou Wan put on a look of regret. “Senior, I’m really sad you transferred. Our school is quite good; why did you transfer?”
“I transferred to the provincial key high school. I thought the teaching resources there would be better,” Fu Qiao told her.
“Is it that provincial key school that’s really hard to get into?” Zhou Wan’s eyes widened. “Senior, you really are a top student. You could even transfer into a school that difficult. Amazing.”
“It’s not really a matter of being amazing or not; my family just happened to move near that school.” Fu Qiao packed her things and asked, “What are you doing for lunch? Going home or eating out?”
Zhou Wan said with a smile, “I’m eating at home. I live nearby; I can just walk back.”
“That’s good. I’ll just find something to eat around here.”
“Isn’t Senior going home for lunch?”
“No one is home to cook. Besides, it takes an hour to get back by bus; I’d rather eat here.”
“Then how did Senior get here this morning?”
“My dad drove me.”
“I see.”
The two chatted as they took the elevator down. When they stepped out of the building, Zhou Wan’s sharp eyes spotted someone standing by the road.
Xu Yingran was wearing a denim jacket and black cargo pants with a white hoodie underneath. She was standing by the road, casually playing with her phone.
“It’s… it’s Senior Xu Yingran.” Zhou Wan stammered to Fu Qiao, looking at the person not far away.
Although Xu Yingran had rejected Zhou Wan, a young girl’s heart is innocent, and feelings don’t vanish instantly. Seeing Xu Yingran standing there, she instinctively looked over and couldn’t pull her eyes away.
Xu Yingran also saw Zhou Wan and Fu Qiao walking out together. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she waved at them as she walked over.
“Fu Qiao!”
Xu Yingran approached with a beaming face. Looking at the two, her gaze briefly swept over their linked arms, and she smiled so wide her eyes disappeared.
Zhou Wan’s face was flushed, but thinking that this person didn’t like her, she felt embarrassed to stay. “I… I’m going home first. Goodbye, Seniors.” After saying that, she turned to leave. Xu Yingran said politely with a smile, “Be careful crossing the road on your way back.”
Zhou Wan nodded and ran off in a hurry.
Once Zhou Wan was far away, Xu Yingran turned around, only to see that Fu Qiao had also started walking away. She quickly chased after her.
“Fu Qiao.” Xu Yingran leaned in. “There’s a really good seafood rice bowl place nearby. Want to eat together?”
Fu Qiao said, “I don’t want a rice bowl.”
Xu Yingran tried again, “The cheese ribs place has a promotion today. Want to go?”
“I don’t want cheese.”
“Then let’s have Malatang. I have a voucher.”
“I don’t want spicy today.”
“Then let’s have curry.”
Fu Qiao stopped in her tracks. She turned around and was immediately pulled into a full embrace by Xu Yingran, who couldn’t stop in time.
Taking advantage of being slightly taller, Xu Yingran hugged Fu Qiao excitedly and said, “Then we’ll do as you said and go have curry.”
Fu Qiao said angrily, “When did I ever say I wanted curry!”
“Then what do you want to eat?” Xu Yingran looked down at her curiously. “You won’t eat rice bowls, cheese ribs, or Malatang. You pick something you want.”
Fu Qiao bit her lip. She couldn’t think of anything to eat for a moment.
People were passing by at the intersection, glancing at the two of them hugging. Fu Qiao felt embarrassed and pushed Xu Yingran away. “I don’t want any of those.”
“Then you choose,” Xu Yingran said, standing beside her. “I brought money today. Whatever you want to eat, my treat.”
“Do I need you to treat me?” Fu Qiao snorted. “Shouldn’t we go Dutch regardless?”
As soon as she finished, Fu Qiao realized her mistake. Sure enough, she saw Xu Yingran’s smile grow even wider.
“Fine.” Xu Yingran shamelessly leaned in to take Fu Qiao’s hand. “If you say Dutch, then it’s Dutch.”
